India: India’s craft brewer B9 Beverages in talks with international brewers about possible stake sale
|
India’s B9 Beverages, maker of popular craft beer Bira, is in talks with international brewers and investors to sell a stake of up to 20% in the company, its chief executive told Reuters on August 11.
“We’ve been looking for a combination: (an) international beer company as a strategic investor and a separate financial partner,” CEO Ankur Jain said in a phone interview, adding that the company was in the “intermediate stage” of raising funds.
“We’ve been talking to beer companies that are not competitive in India or have minimal operations in India.”
Data provider PitchBook estimates New Delhi-based Bira was valued at $210 million in 2018. U.S.-based Sequoia Capital holds a roughly 45% stake in the company, while CEO Jain and his family own around 30%.
Jain declined to name the companies with which it is in talks, but four industry sources said Bira had been in talks with Kirin Holdings, one of Japan’s biggest beer makers which has limited sales in India.
A Kirin spokesman said there was “absolutely no discussion at the moment” on taking a stake in Bira. Last week Kirin cut its full-year profit outlook due to the COVID-19 impact and said it would avoid “non-essential” investments.

USA: Beer consumers settling into the ‘next’ normal
|
US beer consumers are settling into the “next” normal — and that means increased sales in the convenience channel, according to Nielsen VP of beverage alcohol practice Danelle Kosmal, Brewbound reported.
For the fifth consecutive week, off-premise dollar sales growth of beer, FMBs and cider in convenience stores outpaced sales in larger channels, Kosmal wrote in her weekly update.
For the one-week period ending August 1, beer category sales in c-stores increased 16.7% compared to the same week a year ago, while sales in food, drug, mass and club stores increased 9.9%. This marks a reversal of early COVID-19 trends, when consumers stocked their fridges with beer, cider, seltzer and FMBs from grocery and other large-format stores.
“During the early stages of COVID, growth rates of the grocery channel were close to double the growth rates of the convenience channel,” Kosmal wrote. “The bounce back of c-store, which of course is beer’s most important channel, is another sign that consumers have settled into a ‘next’ normal.”
Total dollar sales of beer category products during the last week in July increased 13.9% (core beer, excluding hard seltzer and FMBs, was up 7.8%) compared to the same week a year ago.
The latest one-week period also marked

Australia: Craft brewer Broo Ltd strikes a deal with Carlton & United Breweries for two of its brands to be made at CUB’s facility in Queensland
|
One of Australia's smallest brewers, Broo Ltd, struck a deal with the A$16 billion beer giant Carlton & United Breweries for two of its brands to be made at the Yatala brewery in Queensland, boosting access to a market that is providing a glimmer of hope for the tiny company, The Australian Financial Review reported on August 12.
Broo is struggling. Its cash receipts shrunk to just A$420,000 in the June quarter, with new COVID-19 restrictions in its Victorian base meaning its two hospitality venues are shut, and staff are on JobKeeper payments.
Chief executive and major shareholder Kent Grogan said on August 12 the brewing deal with CUB gave the company a ray of hope in tough times.
"It's fantastic for us,'' he said.
"A lot of our best growth is coming from Queensland at the moment,'' he said.
Broo has a sharemarket capitalisation of A$12 million and its share price was wallowing at 1.7¢, before a 36 per cent jump on August 12 to 2.3¢ by noon AEST.
CUB, Australia's biggest beer company with brands including Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught and Crown Lager, was acquired for A$16 billion by Japanese giant Asahi in a deal which settled in early June. A CUB spokesman said

Belarus: President says Belarus should rely on its own malting barley
|
Belarus should rely on its own raw materials to meet domestic needs for malting barley, Belarus President Aleksander Lukashenko said as he hosted a session to discuss the food industry prospects on 11 August, BelTA reports.
“As far as malting barley is concerned, you need to set production targets right now. We should not lose money [by importing it]. Come to an agreement on prices, do not push hard. Malting barley is not just any barley. You know how to cultivate it. It is a bit more difficult, but not too much,” Aleksander Lukashenko said.
The head of state urged to take advantage of good weather now to procure as much malting barley as possible. “Protect the market of malt and beer,” Aleksander Lukashenko noted.
Following the session, Chairman of the Belarusian state food industry concern Belgospishcheprom Anatoly Buben told reporters that domestic companies have to import a significant amount of malting barley. He believes that the president's instruction will help fully meet the needs for raw materials of the Belsolod company by locally made malting barley as early as next year. “I am sure this will be done,” Anatoly Buben noted.
