Brewery news USA: Off-premise beer sales not enough to make up for loss of on-premise establishments volumes in March-early August
Beer category sales in off-premise retailers during the COVID-19 pandemic haven’t been enough to make up for the loss of sales at on-premise establishments after shutdowns to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, market research firm Nielsen reported on August 18.

During the COVID-19 period (from the week ending March 8 through August 8), beer category volume growth has averaged 15.3%. Nielsen estimated that the beer category would need to average 22% volume growth in off-premise retailers to offset the loss of on-premise sales — which hasn’t happened. That estimation assumes the on-premise accounts for 20% of the industry’s total volume and sales declines of 90%, the firm said.

Dollar sales during the COVID-19 period have increased 19% compared to the same time last year. Compare that to pre-pandemic beer category sales, which were up 3.8% for the 52 weeks ending February 29.

For the latest one-week period ending August 8, beer category dollar sales increased 13.8%, to $1.023 billion, Nielsen reported. Sales were on track with last week’s 13.9% increase. Growth in the category continues to be driven by hard seltzers and FMBs. With those segments removed, “core” beer sales were up 8% for the week.

Most segments were in the black ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Heineken buys more Nigerian Breweries shares in insider disclosure
Nigerian Breweries major shareholder, Heineken, disclosed it purchased 274,542 shares at an average price N35.76 per unit, Nairametrics reported on August 15.

Insider disclosures are reported on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as a regulatory requirement especially when it informs a major shareholder or director of a company purchasing shares in the company they own.

In a related development, its chairman Chief Kolawole Babalola Jamodu also purchased 10,000 units at N37 per unit.

Nigeria Breweries closed at N36 per share on August 14 trading at a price to earnings of 34x. The company has about 8 billion shares outstanding with Heineken as the majority shareholder.

What this means: Insider purchases are often an indication of how shareholders perceive the company’s valuation. It can also mean a lot of things from a possible capital raise to a strengthening of their existing holdings.

Nigerian Breweries has struggled for growth over the last few years as consumers continue to experience a change to taste and preference for alcohol.

Brewery news South Africa: Level 2 lockdown as from August 17 allows on-site alcohol sale and consumption
The on-site sale and consumption of alcohol within licensed establishments will be permitted under South Africa’s Level 2 lockdown, which comes into effect at midnight on Monday 17 August, The South African reported on August 15.

During a long-awaited national address on August 14, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that South Africa would be moving to a new level of lockdown. Citing the country’s successful response to the coronavirus pandemic — which was met with a hard lockdown in March — Ramaphosa noted that South Africa had weathered the worst of the storm, passing the virus’ peak, and, as such, the focus would shift to an all-out reopening of the economy.

While stringent regulations under the National State of Disaster afforded South Africa a window of opportunity to better prepare its healthcare response, the adverse economic impacts of lockdown — which have been particularly harsh on the country’s hospitality industry — have proven to be a topic of fierce contention.

The restaurant industry, which has languished under a severe economic burden as a result of lockdown’s curfews, prohibitions and limitations on gatherings, will be afforded a much-needed reprieve under Level 2 lockdown. Industry stakeholders, who have long-petitioned for the right to sell alcohol to ...More info on site
