USA: Off-premise beer sales not enough to make up for loss of on-premise establishments volumes in March-early August
|
Beer category sales in off-premise retailers during the COVID-19 pandemic haven’t been enough to make up for the loss of sales at on-premise establishments after shutdowns to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, market research firm Nielsen reported on August 18.
During the COVID-19 period (from the week ending March 8 through August 8), beer category volume growth has averaged 15.3%. Nielsen estimated that the beer category would need to average 22% volume growth in off-premise retailers to offset the loss of on-premise sales — which hasn’t happened. That estimation assumes the on-premise accounts for 20% of the industry’s total volume and sales declines of 90%, the firm said.
Dollar sales during the COVID-19 period have increased 19% compared to the same time last year. Compare that to pre-pandemic beer category sales, which were up 3.8% for the 52 weeks ending February 29.
For the latest one-week period ending August 8, beer category dollar sales increased 13.8%, to $1.023 billion, Nielsen reported. Sales were on track with last week’s 13.9% increase. Growth in the category continues to be driven by hard seltzers and FMBs. With those segments removed, “core” beer sales were up 8% for the week.
Most segments were in the black

USA, TX: Brew Monkey Beer Co. to open its doors in San Antonio on August 29
|
San Antonio’s newest brewery, Brew Monkey Beer Co., has announced an Aug. 29 opening date at 11935 Starcrest Drive inside the Blossom Business Park, the San Antonio Express-News reported on August 18.
The 2,000-square-foot facility is equipped with a 15-barrel system, and owner Jim Hansen said that he will have five to seven beers available at the noon launch on his 20-tap line in the tasting room, as well as 32-ounce crowlers for curbside sale.
The beers are being brewed now and will include a honey blonde ale called Summer Lightning Ale, an Irish stout named A Man & His Dog, Hometown Lager, Hot Wells Hefeweizen and an India Pale ale named Meet in the Middle.
“We’re all about making beers that customers will be able to enjoy a few without getting hit over the head with it,” Hansen said. “It’s all about brewing easy drinkers and sticking with classic recipes.”
Under guidelines established by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hansen said he was given the green light to open Brew Monkey at a time when some other local breweries have been relegated to curbside-only business. He will have a food truck on the property during business hours, as well

Canada, BC: Superflux Beer Company to open its own bricks-and-mortar facility
|
Five years after its launch as “an experiment in beer production” brewing out of Callister Brewing and later Strathcona Beer Company, the Superflux Beer Company has announced the opening of its own bricks-and-mortar facility, the Canadian Beer News reported on August 14.
Superflux was founded in 2015 by partners Adam Henderson and Matt Kohlen, and was known as Machine Ales during its year at Callister, before changing its name and brewing location. It has now established its permanent home in a former print shop in the brewery-heavy East Vancouver neighbourhood that has come to be nicknamed Yeast Van.
The new spot opened on August 15th for retail sales, with a selection of beer available in cans including a mixed 4-pack of two new IPAs – one East Coast and one West Coast – brewed in collaboration with Boombox, Backcountry and Twin Sails. The shop will also have branded merchandise for sale, as well as a take-out menu of four different hot dogs.
Superflux Beer Company is located at 505 Clark Drive in East Vancouver, and will be open from 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM daily. The brewery taproom is currently under construction, and is planned to open next month.

USA, NY & NH: Sloop Brewing Co. and Smuttynose Brewing Co. entering into an alternating proprietorship
|
Two years after starting production at their East Fishkill facility, Sloop Brewing Co. is entering into an alternating proprietorship with Smuttynose Brewing Co. in Hampton, NH. The alternating proprietorship will allow Sloop to continue growing their production despite reaching capacity at their current facility. This allows us to maintain direct oversight and involvement in the brewing process. Their East Fishkill facility will continue to operate at its full capacity, producing the majority of Sloop’s beer, Brewbound reported on August 15.
“By entering into this alternating proprietorship with Smuttynose and using their facilities to brew, we are able to maintain direct, boots-on-the-ground control over our beer, from ingredients to process to packaging, without sacrificing any of the quality or flavors people have come to expect from our brand” said Sloop’s Head Brewer Justin Taylor. “The facility in Hampton is a state of the art brewery with amazing staff, and we look forward to working closely with the whole team on this new adventure.”
“In order to keep up with demand in the 17 states we currently distribute to, we’ve decided to enter this partnership with Smuttynose,” said Joe Turco, Sloop’s director of sales and marketing. “As the fastest growing regional brewery in the

USA, NY: IBU Brewery closing its doors for good
|
IBU Brewery owner Mike Mintier announced on August 14 on Facebook that the North Syracuse establishment will be closing its doors for good at the end of August, Syracuse.com reported.
Though they had been doing okay during the storm that is the coronavirus pandemic, growing responsibilities taking care of his family have pushed Mintier to his limit.
Both of his parents are in long term care due to health issues. With the growing costs associated with that, he returned to his job before he opened the brewery as an engineer at Lockheed Martin.
He was working 55-60 hours a week at his day job, helping to take care of his 3-year-old and one month old, and with any free time he had left, managing the brewery.
“I couldn’t keep up. I don’t consider myself a failure; I just had to step away. I had to choose between the business and my family and I chose my family. I think I can be proud of that choice,” Mintier said.
In the age of Covid-19, he said IBU was still profitable doing to-go and delivery sales. They also got a PPE loan, but it wasn’t enough to help ease the pressure of the cost of parental care.

USA, OR: Three more Oregon breweries to close down because of COVID-19
|
The inevitable long list of COVID-19 related brewery closures has begun snowballing into an avalanche that we all saw coming but hoped would never reach us, newschoolbeer.com reported on August 17.
Last weekend Portland’s Grixsen Brewing announced they would close in a surprise Instagram post. In the state’s capital, Salem Ale Works decided to throw in the towel directly because of the COVID-19 impact. And in Albany, Oregon, 3 Sheets Brewery & Taproom announced they would be closing but hoped to continue brewing and selling their beers in other outlets.
“Covid has killed yet another small Oregon business unfortunately,” wrote 3 Sheets owners Beth and Klint Sheets. They opened the taproom in 2018 and the business was meant to be their retirement plan.
Grixsen Brewing opened in inner southeast Portland taproom in 2016 and owner Scott Petersen says the pub will close after Sunday August 23rd. Petersen hints that this may not be the last we hear of him, a possible rebrand or business partnership may be worked out in a way to see Grixsen beers back on tap in some form.
“Our hope is that as a community we can all get through these tough times and once the dust settles we

Nigeria: Heineken buys more Nigerian Breweries shares in insider disclosure
|
Nigerian Breweries major shareholder, Heineken, disclosed it purchased 274,542 shares at an average price N35.76 per unit, Nairametrics reported on August 15.
Insider disclosures are reported on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as a regulatory requirement especially when it informs a major shareholder or director of a company purchasing shares in the company they own.
In a related development, its chairman Chief Kolawole Babalola Jamodu also purchased 10,000 units at N37 per unit.
Nigeria Breweries closed at N36 per share on August 14 trading at a price to earnings of 34x. The company has about 8 billion shares outstanding with Heineken as the majority shareholder.
What this means: Insider purchases are often an indication of how shareholders perceive the company’s valuation. It can also mean a lot of things from a possible capital raise to a strengthening of their existing holdings.
Nigerian Breweries has struggled for growth over the last few years as consumers continue to experience a change to taste and preference for alcohol.

South Africa: Level 2 lockdown as from August 17 allows on-site alcohol sale and consumption
|
The on-site sale and consumption of alcohol within licensed establishments will be permitted under South Africa’s Level 2 lockdown, which comes into effect at midnight on Monday 17 August, The South African reported on August 15.
During a long-awaited national address on August 14, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that South Africa would be moving to a new level of lockdown. Citing the country’s successful response to the coronavirus pandemic — which was met with a hard lockdown in March — Ramaphosa noted that South Africa had weathered the worst of the storm, passing the virus’ peak, and, as such, the focus would shift to an all-out reopening of the economy.
While stringent regulations under the National State of Disaster afforded South Africa a window of opportunity to better prepare its healthcare response, the adverse economic impacts of lockdown — which have been particularly harsh on the country’s hospitality industry — have proven to be a topic of fierce contention.
The restaurant industry, which has languished under a severe economic burden as a result of lockdown’s curfews, prohibitions and limitations on gatherings, will be afforded a much-needed reprieve under Level 2 lockdown. Industry stakeholders, who have long-petitioned for the right to sell alcohol to
