USA: July marks second consecutive moth of increased yoy beer shipments
|
July 2020 marked the second consecutive month of increased year-over-year shipments, according to the Beer Institute (BI), which shared unofficial estimates of domestic tax paid shipments compiled by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), Brewbound reports.
On the heels of shipping 16.6 million barrels of beer in June 2020, U.S. brewers shipped 15.1 million barrels of beer in July, a 1.9% increase compared to July 2019.
The latest shipment data again comes with an asterisk: The BI noted that estimates for March through July will likely be revised moving forward as the TTB has postponed for up to 90 days reporting requirements for filing and payment due dates on or before June 30.
As such, March 2020’s shipment data has been revised to include 200,000 additional barrels, which moved the month’s shipments into the black, with an increase of 130,000 barrels, up 09.% compared to March 2019. Previous estimates had March 2020’s numbers declining 0.5% (or 70,000 barrels).
Through the first seven months of 2020, U.S. brewers have shipped nearly 97.7 million barrels of beer, a decline of 0.7% (or 707,325 barrels). That’s a marked improvement from the early read on previous months.
As the numbers currently stand, U.S. brewers have shipped

Kenya: East African Breweries Limited reduces barley and sorghum orders due to Covid-19 pandemic
|
The Covid-19 pandemic economic shocks is the reason East African Breweries Limited (EABL) has reduced orders for barley and sorghum from contracted farmers, The Standard reported on August 21.
In a statement to media houses on August 20, the brewer said the closure of on-trade outlets like bars, night clubs and restaurants, where beer made from barley and sorghum are consumed, has forced them to reduce the supplies they take from farmers this season.
"Our field extension officers contacted our registered farmers to notify them of this development," read the statement.
The company was quick to point out that though the coronavirus pandemic has affected business, it has taken measures to mitigate its impact on the contracted farmers.
"We have honoured all the contracts with the farmers in the financial year 2019-20, purchasing approximately 45,000 tonnes of barley and 32,000 tonnes of sorghum. We paid all farmers. In addition we will honour all barley and sorghum contracts issued in the current financial year (2020/2021) and pay all farmers once they harvest."
A section of farmers in Nakuru and Narok counties had expressed concerns that the company had declined to receive their harvest.
The company has, however, pledged to review its grain demand upwards once the economy

UK: Diageo says it’s committed to sourcing local malting barley
|
Drinks giant Diageo says it is committed to sourcing as much malting barley as possible from Scottish growers, The Courier reported on August 22.
The company made the comments after it emerged a shipment of Swedish malting barley, destined for Diageo, was unloaded in Montrose earlier last week.
Farmers took to social media to complain about the shipment, which follows many malting barley producers being told they may need to hold on to up to 20% of their contracted barley until March 2021 due to the implications of Covid-19 on grain storage.
The storage problem was blamed on reduced demand for malt following the downturn in production at distilleries and breweries during the coronavirus lockdown.
NFU Scotland’s combinable crops committee chairman, Willie Thomson, said farmers had contacted the union with concerns over the imported barley.
He said: “Reassurances are regularly sought and provided by the distilling sector that the maximum amount of its malting requirements continue to be sourced from Scottish growers.
“Honouring that commitment this harvest will be hugely important in a year when, because of last year’s awful autumn weather, spring barley plantings south of the border have soared.”
He added: “We are also aware that each year, small quantities of specialist varieties of barley
