USA: Molson Coors enters JV to brew and distribute Yuengling beers
|
Molson Coors Beverage Co said on September 15 it partnered with D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc to brew and sell its beers and expand the Pennsylvania-headquartered company’s distribution to the West Coast of the United States, Reuters reported.
D.G. Yuengling, the nearly 200-year-old family-owned brewer that sells beer in 22 U.S. states, said it would operate separately from the joint venture with Molson Coors, which is to be led by a board of directors consisting of members from both companies.
The partnership, expected to come into effect in the second half of 2021, will also help boost Molson Coors’ business that has taken a hit from the COVID-19 pandemic that led to closure of pubs and restaurants.

South Korea: Oriental Brewery Company extends payment deadlines to help wholesalers and small business owners
|
Oriental Brewery Company led by CEO Ben Verhaert has extended payment deadlines to help wholesalers and small business owners affected by a recent spike in coronavirus cases in Korea, The Korea Herald reported on September 13.
Earlier this month, the largest beer maker in South Korea, which is owned by AB InBev, announced it has allowed alcohol wholesalers across the country to pay for its products at a later date or pay in instalments as part of its efforts to ease the burden on businesses that have been battered by stricter social distancing rules in recent weeks.
“We made the decision to become the first in the industry to offer instalment payments as an option to help wholesalers and small business owners who are OB’s most important partners,” one official at OB said.
The company is also looking at other measures to help the alcohol industry see off the pandemic, the official added.
In March, OB introduced a similar measure and delayed payment deadlines for alcohol wholesalers when cases were rising sharply.
As part of its community service efforts, OB recently donated over 2,200 water bottles to residents in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, after the region was hit by Typhoon Haishen.
The company also has a

Zambia: Zambia Breweries commends government decision to partially open bars and nightclubs
|
Zambia's main brewer on September 14 commended the government for its decision to partially open bars and nightclubs which were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Xinhua reported2.
On Friday, September 11, President Edgar Lungu ordered the reopening of bars and nightclubs but noted this will only be from 6 p.m. to 23 p.m from Friday to Sunday.
Zambia Breweries Plc said the move will improve the livelihoods of bars and night club owners and contribute to the recovery of the economy which has been hard hit by the pandemic.
Jose Moran, the company's country director said the decision will also have a trickle-down effect in supporting the agriculture value-chain, given that the company supports local farmers by buying cassava and barley which were key ingredients in some of its brands.
"Like the Head of State has mentioned, we are also aware of the negative impact COVID-19 has had on owners of bars, taverns, and nightclubs, and we share their pain because they play a key role in the growth and overall success of the company," he said in a release.
According to him, the company was committed to contributing to job creation, agro-processing, and manufacturing through the production of clear beer.
He, however, noted that

USA: Trademark dispute between clothing label Patagonia and AB InBev could go to trial
|
A trademark dispute between clothing label Patagonia and AB InBev could go to trial following a ruling in California’s district court, The Drinks Business reported on September 11.
The dispute revolves around a beer brand called Patagonia that AB InBev launched last year. AB InBev bought the trademark for Patagonia Beer in the US in 2012, but didn’t launch Patagonia Brewing Company until 2019.
Fashion label Patagonia, which specialises in clothing for outdoor pursuits such as hiking or skiing, launched its own beer, called Long Root, in 2016.
Patagonia learned of the trademark in 2013, but believed that Anheuser-Busch had legitimate rights to it at the time.
However, the brewer then launched its Patagonia beer at pop-up stores at US ski resorts in 2019, along with “Patagonia” branded clothing. Both the beer and apparel featured a mountain logo that infringed Patagonia’s trademarks, the court heard.
Patagonia’s lawyers argue the company’s brand name has become “among the most identifiable brands in the world”, so for AB InBev to launch a beer by the same name in this way, particularly after it had not used the trademark for six years, amounted to unfair competition. Last year, the fashion label sought to invalidate AB InBev’s trademark, asked the

Ukraine & China: China boosts Ukrainian barley imports
|
China has boosted imports of Ukrainian barley in the first two months in the 2020/21 season, buying 1.3 million tonnes compared with 659,000 tonnes in the same period in 2019/20, the APK-Inform consultancy said on September 14.
It said China had bought 862,000 tonnes of barley in August versus 415,000 tonnes in August 2019.
Ukraine is a traditional grower of barley and its traditional market is Saudi Arabia.
This season its barley exports to Saudi Arabia fell to 334,000 tonnes from 388,000 a season earlier.
Ukraine is likely to cut its barley harvest to 7.3 million tonnes this year from 8.9 million tonnes in 2019 due to poor weather, according to the economy ministry.
Exports in 2020/21 could fall to 3.34 million tonnes from 5.08 million tonnes in 2019/20, the ministry has said.

USA: Hop growers adjust acreage in response to COVID-19 pandemic
|
Even before COVID-19 officially arrived in the Yakima Valley, officials at Yakima Chief Hops, a grower-owned hop processor and supplier, anticipated the pandemic would impact their brewery customers worldwide, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported on September 13.
In February, the Yakima company’s grower members reduced their hop acreage, something that hasn’t been done in some time given the strong demand from craft breweries.
A month later, restaurants and taprooms were forced to shut down or drastically reduce operations nationwide under stay-at-home orders. As a result, breweries weren’t going to make as much beer or need as many hops.
“We felt that was the responsible decision for our growers and our breweries,” said Bryan Pierce, vice president of North American sales for Yakima Chief Hops. “No one benefits if there are too many hops.”
Plenty of hops will be harvested in Yakima Valley hop fields in the coming weeks, however.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that U.S. growers had a record 59,174 hop acres as of the end of June, making it possible the 2020 crop could be bigger than the 2019 harvest, which totaled a record 112 million pounds of hops. About 72% of this year’s estimated acreage, or 42,343 acres, is in the Yakima
