Brewery news USA: Molson Coors enters JV to brew and distribute Yuengling beers
Molson Coors Beverage Co said on September 15 it partnered with D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc to brew and sell its beers and expand the Pennsylvania-headquartered company’s distribution to the West Coast of the United States, Reuters reported.

D.G. Yuengling, the nearly 200-year-old family-owned brewer that sells beer in 22 U.S. states, said it would operate separately from the joint venture with Molson Coors, which is to be led by a board of directors consisting of members from both companies.

The partnership, expected to come into effect in the second half of 2021, will also help boost Molson Coors’ business that has taken a hit from the COVID-19 pandemic that led to closure of pubs and restaurants.

Hops news USA: Hop growers adjust acreage in response to COVID-19 pandemic
Even before COVID-19 officially arrived in the Yakima Valley, officials at Yakima Chief Hops, a grower-owned hop processor and supplier, anticipated the pandemic would impact their brewery customers worldwide, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported on September 13.

In February, the Yakima company’s grower members reduced their hop acreage, something that hasn’t been done in some time given the strong demand from craft breweries.

A month later, restaurants and taprooms were forced to shut down or drastically reduce operations nationwide under stay-at-home orders. As a result, breweries weren’t going to make as much beer or need as many hops.

“We felt that was the responsible decision for our growers and our breweries,” said Bryan Pierce, vice president of North American sales for Yakima Chief Hops. “No one benefits if there are too many hops.”

Plenty of hops will be harvested in Yakima Valley hop fields in the coming weeks, however.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that U.S. growers had a record 59,174 hop acres as of the end of June, making it possible the 2020 crop could be bigger than the 2019 harvest, which totaled a record 112 million pounds of hops. About 72% of this year’s estimated acreage, or 42,343 acres, is in the Yakima ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Big Boiler Brewing purchases Castle Brewing Co. in Greenville
Castle Brewing Co. in Greenville recently was sold to Big Boiler Brewing in Lowell, according to a statement from Small Business Deal Advisors, grbj.com reported on September 11.

Castle Brewing partners decided to sell the company, citing other business interests demanding more time and attention.

“Thank you, Small Business Deal Advisors,” Castle Brewing Co. said in a statement. “Your confidential marketing efforts were comprehensive and your guidance throughout the process was invaluable. Big Boiler Brewing is a fantastic fit, and we’re excited to watch Castle Brewing enter its next phase of growth.”

SBDA served as an M&A adviser to Castle Brewing. This included providing advisory expertise and managing the preparatory, marketing, due diligence and negotiation phases of the transaction. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This is the second time Castle Brewing Co. changed hands. Formerly known as 57 Brew Pub, Castle Brewing was purchased in 2017 by three local investors. The company then was rebranded as “Castle Brewing Co.,” partly in tribute to J.R.’s Roller Castle, a roller rink that operated for many years on the present-day location of the brewpub.

In addition to rebranding the company, the second owners updated the interior, installed digital signage in front of the building and renovated ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Lost City Brewing now open for business
Lost City Brewing is open for business. The long-awaited brewery is now welcoming thirsty patrons to visit its North Miami location — nearly four years after it was first slated to launch, the Miami New Times reported on September 14.

Along with business partner Diego Escobar, founding brewers Chris Campos and Daniel Morales worked with the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency for several years to establish their production brewery and taproom.

Lost City officially opened its doors on July 31, operating solely on a to-go model via online ordering. According to Escobar, a local food truck has agreed to team up with the brewery, a partnership that will soon allow it to offer onsite consumption.

Many consider Escobar, the former owner/operator of Abraxas Lounge in Miami Beach, a pioneer in the local craft-beer scene, He says his goal in partnering with Campos and Morales after closing Abraxas in 2013 was to continue supporting the city's growing beer industry.

"The craft-beer community has just exploded since 2015, and it's something I've always been passionate about," Escobar tells New Times. "Being part of a brewery felt like the next evolution."

Campos and Morales appeared on the local scene at the 2012 Grovetoberfest, where took top honors in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Saucy Brew Works to open its third location in Columbus next month
Cleveland's Saucy Brew Works said it will open its third location in what was previously Café Apropos in Columbus next month, though a specific grand opening day has not been officially announced, the Crain's Cleveland Business reported on September 11.

The location, which can seat 190 in a nonpandemic world, includes a small brewing operation, restaurant — which will feature Saucy's signature New Haven-style Apizzas — and coffeehouse.

Indoor and outdoor seating will be available, as well as carryout. According to Saucy, the indoor seating "offers personal swings and small stadium seating designed to provide an exciting and unique dining experience."

"Saucy's Columbus location in Harrison West has been a long time in the making," said Brent Zimmerman, CEO and co-owner of Saucy Brew Works, in a statement. "We have deep roots over multiple generations in Columbus and wanted to make our entrance perfect. We looked at dozens of opportunities in the area, and in Harrison West we fell in love within the first five minutes touring the building. It was a very unique opportunity that didn't exist on the public market. We took control of the space within days of seeing it."

The Columbus location joins Saucy's flagship brewery, taproom and restaurant that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Braxton Brewing Company opens its first Cincinnati location
Covington's own Braxton Brewing Company opened its first Cincinnati location at noon on Saturday, September 12, WCPO reported.

The company opened in the former 3 Points Urban Brewery, located in the Pendleton neighborhood near Downtown.

"The owners of this space were looking to get out to focus on their core business, which makes a total amount of sense," said Jake Rouse, co-founder and CEO of Braxton.

Rouse announced Braxton had acquired the space in July.

Rouse said the opening of Braxton's new location in the space fulfilled a longtime dream for him and his brother, Evan Rouse.

"That's something my brother and I wanted for a very, very long time," Jake Rouse said of opening a Braxton location in Cincinnati.

Braxton's new location opened with the same lineup of beers that have made the Covington-based brewery popular across the Ohio River in Nothern Kentucky.

"Not immediately when we open, we will have wine and cocktails on tap as well," Rouse added.

Unlike Braxton's original location in Covington or its satellite locations in Newport and Fort Mitchell, the Cincinnati location will offer something different in the near future.

"We are actually for the first time ever actually entering into a foray with food," he said. "We've never had food in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: 6 and 40 Brewery already open in Lakewood
New breweries often seem to take a few months to dial in their recipes and make great beers. Not so for 6 and 40 Brewery in Lakewood, Colorado. At their September 11 grand opening, the brewery fired on all cylinders with a wide-ranging tap list designed to satisfy every palate. 6 and 40 is connected to long-standing homebrew store Tom’s Brew Shop, porchdrinking.com reported.

Owner Tom Schurmann explained that he created 6 and 40’s beer selection for broad appeal. “We want something for everyone,” he explained. “We have 20 selections. We’re gonna have what you like.”

For self-described gearhead Schurmann, the brewery gave him a forum to pair his passion for automobiles with his love of beer and create a car-lovers paradise. The brewery’s name refers to the only place in the country where Route 6 and Route 40 intersect. To Denver locals, those would be known as 6th Avenue and Colfax.

Along with his wife Eileen, Schurmann filled the taproom with nostalgic classic car photos, license plates and even vintage shots of Schurmann’s hot-rods. The beer names stay in the same lane with brews such as Direct Diesel Injection, High Test Premium and 32 Coupe. For anyone with even a passing interest ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Necromancer Brewing Co. plans to open in North Hills before the end is over
Before the year is over, Ben Butler and Aaron Easler plan to raise the dead, NEXTpittsburgh reported on September 12.

At an as-yet-unnamed location in the North Hills, where suds-makers are scarce, they’re planning to open Necromancer Brewing Co. to resurrect forgotten beer styles. They won’t be summoning spirits, just historical knowledge and brewing know-how.

There will be several core offerings, including a New England IPA, a Belgian witbier and a grisette, plus 15 other specialty beers in rotation.

When the space debuts, it will be a pickup site for 16-ounce cans in four-packs and cases. Necromancer also will handle retail accounts for local bars and restaurants and will deliver beer to doorsteps within a 25-mile radius.

As the COVID-19 situation improves, the partners plan to open a large taproom, restaurant and production facility — also in the North Hills — by 2022.

“Right now, we’re focused on making really good beer and without putting anyone in danger,” says Butler, who, along with Easler, runs the Millvale-based marketing firm Top Hat.

The marketing company specializes in beer branding. They’ve created more than 200 unique beer can designs for seven regional breweries in areas from Alaska to Florida and helped to revitalize hometown favorite Iron City Beer. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Persimmon Hollow Brewing Company launches on Lake Eola
Persimmon Hollow Brewing Company has just opened its new downtown brewery in the former home of Panera Bread in the Eo Inn on Lake Eola, the Bungalower reported on September 14.

Located at 227 N. Brewery news Canada, ON: New Ontario Brewing Co. looks to expand into European market
North Bay’s New Ontario Brewing Co. will receive C$842,000 through FedNor as the local brewery looks to ramp up production and export its products to foreign markets, the Londoner reported on September 11.

Sault Ste. Marie MP Terry Sheehan, Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota and FedNor director general Aime Dimatteo made the announcement Friday morning through Zoom.

The funds come from FedNor’s Targeted Manufacturing Initiative for Northern Ontario, a program described as helping manufacturers upgrade and improve their capital equipment in order to increase their competitiveness and productivity.

Sheehan, who serves as the parliamentary secretary to the minister responsible for FedNor — the federal government’s economic development organization for Northern Ontario — said the funding will allow New Ontario to expand and purchase automated processing equipment.

Once complete, the project is expected to create up to 12 jobs.

“Congratulations to the entire team at the New Ontario Brewing Co. on their new expansion and for keeping the initiative on track during these extremely challenging times,” Sheehan said.

“This type of commitment is what’s keeping Canadians working safely and will help us get the economy back on track.”

Rota also credited New Ontario for producing hand sanitizer under the name Pure North.

Last month, Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli announced New ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Trademark dispute between clothing label Patagonia and AB InBev could go to trial
A trademark dispute between clothing label Patagonia and AB InBev could go to trial following a ruling in California’s district court, The Drinks Business reported on September 11.

The dispute revolves around a beer brand called Patagonia that AB InBev launched last year. AB InBev bought the trademark for Patagonia Beer in the US in 2012, but didn’t launch Patagonia Brewing Company until 2019.

Fashion label Patagonia, which specialises in clothing for outdoor pursuits such as hiking or skiing, launched its own beer, called Long Root, in 2016.

Patagonia learned of the trademark in 2013, but believed that Anheuser-Busch had legitimate rights to it at the time.

However, the brewer then launched its Patagonia beer at pop-up stores at US ski resorts in 2019, along with “Patagonia” branded clothing. Both the beer and apparel featured a mountain logo that infringed Patagonia’s trademarks, the court heard.

Patagonia’s lawyers argue the company’s brand name has become “among the most identifiable brands in the world”, so for AB InBev to launch a beer by the same name in this way, particularly after it had not used the trademark for six years, amounted to unfair competition. Last year, the fashion label sought to invalidate AB InBev’s trademark, asked the ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine & China: China boosts Ukrainian barley imports
China has boosted imports of Ukrainian barley in the first two months in the 2020/21 season, buying 1.3 million tonnes compared with 659,000 tonnes in the same period in 2019/20, the APK-Inform consultancy said on September 14.

It said China had bought 862,000 tonnes of barley in August versus 415,000 tonnes in August 2019.

Ukraine is a traditional grower of barley and its traditional market is Saudi Arabia.

This season its barley exports to Saudi Arabia fell to 334,000 tonnes from 388,000 a season earlier.

Ukraine is likely to cut its barley harvest to 7.3 million tonnes this year from 8.9 million tonnes in 2019 due to poor weather, according to the economy ministry.

Exports in 2020/21 could fall to 3.34 million tonnes from 5.08 million tonnes in 2019/20, the ministry has said.

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery Company extends payment deadlines to help wholesalers and small business owners
Oriental Brewery Company led by CEO Ben Verhaert has extended payment deadlines to help wholesalers and small business owners affected by a recent spike in coronavirus cases in Korea, The Korea Herald reported on September 13.

Earlier this month, the largest beer maker in South Korea, which is owned by AB InBev, announced it has allowed alcohol wholesalers across the country to pay for its products at a later date or pay in instalments as part of its efforts to ease the burden on businesses that have been battered by stricter social distancing rules in recent weeks.

“We made the decision to become the first in the industry to offer instalment payments as an option to help wholesalers and small business owners who are OB’s most important partners,” one official at OB said.

The company is also looking at other measures to help the alcohol industry see off the pandemic, the official added.

In March, OB introduced a similar measure and delayed payment deadlines for alcohol wholesalers when cases were rising sharply.

As part of its community service efforts, OB recently donated over 2,200 water bottles to residents in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, after the region was hit by Typhoon Haishen.

The company also has a ...More info on site

Brewery news Zambia: Zambia Breweries commends government decision to partially open bars and nightclubs
Zambia's main brewer on September 14 commended the government for its decision to partially open bars and nightclubs which were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Xinhua reported2.

On Friday, September 11, President Edgar Lungu ordered the reopening of bars and nightclubs but noted this will only be from 6 p.m. to 23 p.m from Friday to Sunday.
