USA: Justice Department approves AB InBev’s purchase of Craft Brew Alliance
|
The U.S. Justice Department said on September 18 it approved Anheuser-Busch's plan to buy the shares of Craft Brew Alliance that it does not already own, Yahoo Finance reported.
The $220 million deal, which was announced in November, was approved on condition the companies sell Craft Brew Alliance's Kona brand beer.
The Portland-based CBA's other brands include Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Cisco Brewers, Redhook Brewery and Widmer Brothers Brewing.
Anheuser-Busch owned 31.2% of CBA before the deal was announced, and also distributed many of CBA's brands.
"CBA’s diverse portfolio of national lifestyle brands and award-winning regional breweries are an excellent complement to our family of craft partners," said Marcelo Michaelis, president of ABI's Brewers Collective business unit.
The companies said in a release that closing was expected "in the coming weeks."

Canada: Barley harvest advancing quickly throughout Canada
|
Barley harvest is advancing quickly throughout Canada. If it were not for wet, cold conditions in some regions the barley harvest would be close to finished, CMBTC reported on September 22.
The northern regions of Alberta have been plagued by wet and less than ideal growing conditions which delayed crop maturity and pushed back the start of harvest. Meanwhile, the majority of the harvest is complete in Saskatchewan although the Northwest region is being slowed down by nuisance rains. Manitoba is 90% finished their barley harvest.
Overall the malt barley harvested to date is showing very good quality with generally high test weights and plump kernels, low incidence of DON and limited chitting. There has been a relatively wide range of proteins with the majority of the samples in the 11-13.5% range. This is a high quality crop, and there will ample tonnage available for the domestic and the export market.

USA: More than half a million brewing industry jobs at risk because of the coronavirus pandemic
|
More than half a million people in the US brewing industry will lose their jobs this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the sector’s figureheads, The Drinks Business reported on September 23.
A report commissioned by John Dunham Associates claims that 651,000 jobs in brewing, distributing and retail “will be lost by the end of the year”, while overall beer sales could fall by as much as US$22 billion by the end of 2020.
Brewing roles are expected to be the hardest hit, with the report warning 3,600 brewers could lose their jobs by year end.
“The beer industry has seen a dramatic decline both in sales and jobs that rely on our nation’s most popular alcohol beverage,” said Jim McGreevy, president and CEO of the Beer Institute.
McGreevy said the US government needs to provide additional support such as freezing federal excise taxes. In 2017, the US congress passed a bill that cut federal excise tax for beer, wine and spirits producers, however, the legislation is not yet permanent. the country’s brewers are now putting pressure on the government to pass a new version of the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act to “make permanent reforms enacted in

USA, OH: Clag Brewing Co. already open in Sandusky
|
The proprietors of Clag Brewing Co. drafted top talent to help put Sandusky on the map for craft beer, the Sandusky Register reported on September 19.
Kha Khet, along with his business partners, invested about $1.2 million to start Clag Brewing Co. on Columbus Avenue inside Small City Taphouse.
“It has been my dream for years to open a brewery and make excellent beer here in Sandusky,” Khet said.
Clag recruited Kevin Kowalski, who has years of experience brewing craft beer, as the head brewer.
“Kevin is producing world-class beer,” Khet said.
Clag hopes to add craft beer to the growing list of reasons why people travel to Sandusky.
“We want to create a craft beer identity for Sandusky,” Kowalski said. “It has all of these attractions that draw in tourists. There’s no reason it can’t become a beer destination, too.”
“Our goal is to put Sandusky on the map for brewing,” Khet added.
Khet said it was tough to open the brewery in May in the middle of a pandemic since people are still hesitant to go out.
But he said the people who have tasted one of the 16 beers they produce all reacted positively.
“People are really into the beer. They say ‘it’s the best,’” Khet said.

USA, MA: Powder Hollow Brewery opens new location in Massachusetts
|
A brewery with roots in Connecticut has found its way to South Deerfield, The Recorder reported on September 18.
Powder Hollow Brewery, which opened its flagship location in Enfield, Conn. in 2014, opened its doors to customers on September 18 at its new location at Yankee Candle Village in the location of the former Chandler’s Restaurant.
“We’re excited to open up and share what we have with Western Massachusetts,” said Mike McManus, owner, founder and CEO of Powder Hollow Brewery.
McManus said he toured other sites in Western Massachusetts, but none stood out to him as much as the South Deerfield location at 25 Greenfield Road.
“When I walked into the building, I could immediately see the vision I was trying to create,” he said.
Wade Bassett, director of retail operations at Yankee Candle Village, said in a statement that the addition to Yankee Candle will offer guests a place to relax.
“Powder Hollow Brewery is constantly experimenting with different flavors and brewing styles, but their commitment to exceptional guest service is what makes them stand out,” Bassett said. “This has been an exciting renovation process and we are delighted to share this incredible new space with Powder Hollow.”
In addition to building the area for the

Canada, NS: Bedford’s Topside Brewing announces release of its first beers
|
A new family-owned and home-based brewery in the town of Bedford, Nova Scotia has announced the release of its first beers, the Canadian Beer News reported on September 22.
Topside Brewing has been founded by Blair and Erin Tobin, and is named after a diving term inspired by Blair’s career as a Royal Canadian Navy Clearance Diver.
The brewery had its public debut last weekend with the tapping of a keg of On the Bottom East Coast IPA (6% abv) at local beer garden Birch & Anchor. The beer is described as follows:
On the Bottom is named after the diving term when a diver will communicate with Topside (aka. the surface crew) when they reach bottom by stating “On the Bottom”. The beer is a hazy East Coast style IPA. Generously hopped with both early and late addition hops, and then dry-hopped with an abundance of Cascade. It has a bitter back end and delightful hop aroma and smooth mouth feel.
In addition to On the Bottom, the brewery will offer three other core brands – 5 Bells Session IPA (4.6% abv), Joyce’s Boy Hefeweizen (5% abv), and Lord’s Porter (6% abv) – as well as occasional seasonal and one-off beers.

USA, NY: Other Half Brewing’s Williamsburg facility to open in October
|
Other Half Brewing co-founders Andrew Burman, Matt Monahan and Sam Richardson are pleased to announce the opening of Other Half Domino Park, the brewery’s Williamsburg taproom and production facility at 34 River Street in One South First, the second mixed-use building to open at the Domino Sugar redevelopment site. Other Half Domino Park is scheduled to open in October 2020, TheFullPint.com reported on September 17.
“Domino Park will feature more experimental beverages, including seltzers, small-batch and fruited beers, as well as styles we have not brewed before,” says Sam Richardson. “We’ll be brewing with new hops and yeast strains and are excited to create more on-the-fly beers. Our original Brooklyn location will continue to offer canned beers to go and focus on IPAs, sours and stouts.”
“We’ve tapped industry friends to help us curate cocktail, Champagne and wine programs that will match what we’re doing with the beers,” says Andrew Burman. “And since our team loves whisky and mezcal, we’re psyched to offer a broader list of these spirits, too.”
Other Half will anchor the bustling corner of South 1st Street and River Avenue, in a 3,600-square-foot space with 50-feet of waterfront frontage overlooking Manhattan and the East River. Designed by

USA, SC: Kite Hill Brewing Co. to open in Clemson next summer
|
Patrick Square announced Kite Hill Brewing Co. will be part of its Patrick Square’s Town Center’s new two-story, 24,000-square-foot building, The Exchange, the Upstate Business Journal reported on September 17.
Co-owned by Clemson University alumni Bobby Congdon and Bryon Leggett, the brewery is set to open summer 2021 and will occupy 4,500 square feet of the building. To accommodate the addition of the brewery, the building’s plans include an upfit featuring an outdoor area with roll-up door, patio and enclosed lawn where people may gather and bring their dogs, Patrick Square’s Town Center manager Chris Hodge said.
“Kite Hill will be Clemson’s first brewery and I’m thrilled that a couple of great Clemson alumni will accomplish that milestone,” said Hodge. “We’ve designed a spectacular space that showcases the brewing process while also creating a comfortable social atmosphere for the Clemson community.”
Once open, Kite Hill will consist of a 10-barrel brewing system, taproom and outdoor beer garden. It will also serve brew and sell their beer on-site and feature 12-15 beers on tap as well as offer a small food menu. UK: Maltsters’ contract prices disappoint malting barley producers
|
UK’s malting barley producers say they’ve been “kicked in the teeth” yet again with the confirmation by maltsters of the £130/tonne open market element of this year’s contract price, the Press and Journal reported on September 19.
Simpsons, Crisp Malt and Diageo have all announced their prices, with only Bairds left to confirm what it will pay once harvest is complete.
With the feed barley price at £125 – or more in some cases – growers say the effort that goes into producing malting quality grain is not being recognised by maltsters or distillers who gain international kudos for the provenance of their Scottish ingredients.
Yields have been high, and rejections because of “quality issues” have been growing in recent days, with one merchant reportedly accepting only six out of 22 loads of barley contracted for malting.
The fear is that with stores bursting with this year’s harvest combined with significant stocks held over from last year and the prospect of tighter Covid-19 restrictions for the hospitality sector, demand and prices for the product will remain low next year.
Easter Ross grower Donald Ross – a past chairman of Highland Grain and a former YEN (Yield Enhancement Network) competition winner – said he and many

Australia: Western Australia's Barley Council recommends focusing on feed grain in 2021
|
Recommendations for malt barley variety receivals in the 2021/22 harvest have been handed down by the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia's (GIWA) Barley Council, the Farm Weekly reported on September 22.
The suggestions, contained in a comprehensive report, came as a result of the GIWA Barley Forum discussion regarding the impact of the China barley tariffs and the malt barley variety rationalisation discussion held in late July.
Report lead author and Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) senior research scientist Blakely Paynter said the malt barley variety receival recommendations have been developed by GIWA in consultation with the WA barley supply chain.
"The reduction in overall market demand for malt barley, associated with the tariffs imposed by China on the imports of Australian barley, favour the production of barley with a yield-feed focus rather than a malt-focus and result in a further reduction of the total area sown to barley in 2021," Mr Paynter said.
"Fortunately, the dominant barley varieties, RGT Planet and Spartacus CL, grown in WA can be received into malt segregations, ensuring we can still respond to any increased demand for malt barley should market conditions change.
"Maintaining a supply of the premium malt varieties, Bass and Flinders, is
