Canada: Beer sales bounce back and area close to last year’s numbers
|
After a decline in beer purchases early this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, sales have bounced back and are close to last year’s numbers, the Lethbridge News Now reported on October 7.
Beer sales dropped by 2.4 per cent in March, 4.8 per cent in April and 2.5 per cent in May. It was the result of the closure of restaurants and bars and the cancellation of sporting events.
There was a big turnaround with service businesses reopening and the return of warmer weather. Beer Canada reports domestic sales of 10.4 million hectolitres which is an increase of 0.1 per cent.
Canadian Malting Barley Technical managing director Peter Watts said national beer sales in June were up 3.6 per cent with July at 3.5 per cent.
“We saw a quicker recovery than many people may have expected so that’s really positive news for our industry domestically and of course for Canadian brewers,” he said. “It will be interesting to see what happens with future beer consumption with fewer outdoor patios and decks.”
As consumers adjusted to the changes they turned to home deliveries in a way to make it easier for people to purchase beer.

Malaysia: Confederation of Malaysian Brewers calls for no excise duties and sales tax rise in upcoming Budget 2021

The Confederation of Malaysian Brewers Bhd (CMBB), comprising Heineken Malaysia Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd (Carlsberg Malaysia), has said there should be no increases in excise duties and sales tax in the upcoming Budget 2021, The Edge Markets MY reported on October 7.
CMBB, in a statement on October 7, said any increase in excise duties may be detrimental to the government's revenue collections and further hamper the recovery of the many local businesses relying on beer as a source of revenue, as well as further fuel demand for illicit alcohol.
This is on top of the growing concern about the impact of Covid-19 on the local economy, the brewers said, pointing out that they themselves reported a significant decline in revenue for the first half of 2020. Notably, the two brewers were affected by a six-week suspension of brewing and distribution operations from March 18.
A significant contributing factor towards local demand for contraband is high excise duty, said CMBB. Malaysia's excise duties on beer ranks second highest in the world, behind Norway and tied with Singapore.
"Instead of tax increases, CMBB is advocating strengthened enforcement over the illicit trade, comprising mostly imported beer with no duties paid.

China: Beijing Yanjing Beer’s chairman detained on suspicion of violating the law in connection with his duties

Zhao Xiaodong, chairman and president of Beijing Yanjing Beer, has been detained by authorities, the country's third-largest brewer announced on October 8.
Zhao, 48, is being investigated on suspicion of violating the law in connection with his duties, the company said.
The detention comes with the company's business performance deteriorating.
Yanjing Beer's net profit in the first half of 2020 dropped 47.5% from a year earlier to 269 million yuan ($40 million) as sales fell 13.9% to 5.5 billion yuan. The tumble came amid a growing affinity in China for mid-grade and luxury beers. The brewer also lags its rivals in terms of online marketing, according to sources.
In addition, Yanjing's sports event tie-ins have also stalled.
Meanwhile, No. 1 China Resources Beer and No. 2 Tsingtao Brewery logged record net profits for the first half.
China's total beer sales dropped about 9% by volume in 2019 from five years earlier as consumer tastes shifted toward wine and other alcoholic beverages, according to British market research company Euromonitor International.
Meanwhile, beer sales in value terms jumped 34% over the same period, lifted by the popularity of midrange and luxury beers. Brewer earnings vary depending on how well each beer maker responds to market changes.

UK: AB InBev reduces ABV of packaged and draught Stella Artois and Stella Artois Gluten Free
|
Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I has reduced the ABV of packaged and draught Stella Artois and Stella Artois Gluten Free from 4.8% to 4.6%, Namnews reported on October 9.
The AB InBev-owned brewer stated that the change was in line with its commitment to responsible drinking, addressing the consumer need for moderation by giving people greater choice in how they can moderate alcohol intake without having to sacrifice on the taste of their favourite beers.
Dorien Nijs, Brewmaster at the Stella Artois Brewery in Leuven, commented: “We know that taste and quality remain the number one priority for Stella Artois drinkers, and we also recognise an ongoing health and wellness trend through moderation. We are proud that we can now deliver the same Stella Artois taste people know and love, with an ABV of 4.6%.”
The brand highlighted that the 4.6% ABV bracket has been the fastest growing in premium beer in the UK, more than doubling in size over two years.
The 4.6% product has begun rolling out in all formats in the on and off-trade.

World: AB InBev forms partnership with Rio Tinto to deliver new standard of sustainable aluminium cans
|
Beer drinkers will soon be able to enjoy their favourite brew out of cans that are not only infinitely recyclable, but made from responsibly produced, low-carbon aluminium, Manufacturing.net reported on October 7.
Rio Tinto and Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world’s largest brewer, have formed a global partnership to deliver a new standard of sustainable aluminium cans. In a first for the canned beverage industry, the two companies have signed an MOU committing to work with supply chain partners to bring AB InBev products to market in cans made from low-carbon aluminium that meets industry-leading sustainability standards.
Initially focused in North America, the partnership will see AB InBev use Rio Tinto’s low-carbon aluminium made with renewable hydropower along with recycled content to produce a more sustainable beer can. This will offer a potential reduction in carbon emissions of more than 30 percent per can compared to similar cans produced today using traditional manufacturing techniques in North America.
The partnership will also leverage outcomes from the development of ELYSIS, a disruptive zero carbon aluminium smelting technology.
The first 1 million cans produced through the partnership will be piloted in the United States on Michelob ULTRA, the fastest growing beer brand in the country.

Rwanda: New imported beer brands Lion, Leffe, and Brok storm Rwandan market
|
Lion, Leffe, and Brok are the newly imported beer brands with fancy and exotic packaging that have stormed the Rwandan market and definitely are rapidly gaining popularity among the elite class, Taarifa Rwanda reported on October 6.
These were the preferred brands consumed during the two-day Rwanda Summer Golf tourism event that was held at Falcon Golf Club on the shores of Lake Muhazi in Rwamagana district.
Local brewers are said to be watching closely as their previous market domination gets disrupted for the first time with a real threat and competition from foreign brands. These beers are sold in take away bottles and cans.
According to ABANOUB General Trading Ltd Company, the importers of these beers including other energy drinks, there is massive positive response from Rwandans, “the elite of Rwandan society have liked our products and the consumption is rapidly expanding especially in Kigali city and neighbouring districts.
“We are currently expanding to rural districts and marketing our products and we expect a good response,” Rugazora Paul, the company’s Marketing Manager, told Taarifa on October 5 on the sidelines of Rwanda Summer Golf event at Falcon Golf Club in Rwamagana district.
