USA, HI: Kona Brewing officially returns being independent and privately owned
|
Kona Brewing Co. operations in Hawaii officially returned being independent and privately owned last Tuesday, October 6. Going forward, Kona Brewing Co. will operate as Kona Brewing Hawaii, the West Hawaii Today reported on October 12.
“This is a very exciting time for our entire team in Hawaii,” said Billy Smith, general manager of Kona Brewing Hawaii. “For years, our team across the islands — which includes our brewers, restaurant workers, administrative personnel, sales and marketing staff have called Hawaii our home. Our newfound independence will allow us to put even more focus on our fans and communities throughout Hawaii, while also being able to brew fresh world-class beer locally thanks to our new 100,000- barrel brewery opening soon.”
The announcement follows the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division approving in late September the acquisition of Kona Brewing Co. operations in the Aloha State by PV Brewing Partners. That arrangement paved the way for beer giant Anheuser-Busch to purchase Kona Brewing Co.’s operations outside Hawaii.
Construction on the new 30,000-square-foot brewery in Kailua-Kona is nearing completion, with the brewery scheduled to open later this year. The brewery and two Kona Brewing pubs employ more than 140 local residents. The growth of both the brewery

Canada, AB: Harvest nearing completion in central Alberta
|
Following continued progress on harvest efforts throughout central Alberta last week, some rain last Sunday put harvest to a halt in some areas, rdnewsnow.com reported on October 9.
Since last week, producers were able to combine an additional 19 per cent of their major crops. Overall, about 90 per cent of all crops are combined, with five per cent swathed and another five per cent still standing. About eight per cent of canola is in swath and six per cent standing.
For all crops, quality is said to be above their regional averages. About 95 per cent of hard red spring wheat, all durum wheat and 94 per cent of oats are graded in the top two grades.
Almost 50 per cent of barley is eligible for malt and 41 per cent graded as No. 1 feed. For canola, 88 per cent is graded as No. 1, and six per cent as No. 2. About 52 per cent of dry peas is graded as No. 1, 40 per cent as No. 2, seven per cent as No. 3 and one per cent as feed.
Fall seeded crops are rated as 2 per cent poor, 12 per cent fair, 84 per cent good and 2

USA, WI: 414 Brewing Company plans to open in West Allis
|
Cushman & Wakefield | The Boerke Company Inc. has filed a letter of intent with the City of West Allis to sell property at 6749-6751 W. National Ave., in the former Perfect Screw building and the land just east of the building, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on October 12.
That's where the 414 Brewing Company — brewery to be named later — hopes to open a brewery, taproom and beer garden, which is considered a manufacturing business, according to papers filed in the city.
The group 414 Brewing Co. is not the same as Vernacular which produces 414 branded beer.
Authorization of the sale is on the agenda for the Community Development Authority meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 13.
West Allis is currently home to Westallion Brewing, 1825 S. 72nd St. Another brewery, Layman Brewing, opens this month at 6001 W. Madison St., in the former Kokopelli's Pub space. It would be the second try for Layman owners Kyle Ida and Sarah Warran.
Originally Layman hoped to move to 7133 W. Becher St., the former home of Dave's Famous Pickles, but couldn't make the building work.

Cascade Locks, Oregon’s Thunder Island Brewing Co. will simultaneously celebrate the grand opening of their new location and their 7th anniversary from October 12 to 18th, newschoolbeer.com reported on October 10.
Beloved for their Columbia Riverside location at the Port of Cascade Locks, Thunder Island Brewing has nearly completed their relocation to 601 NW Wa Na Pa St. With some improvements and the full reinstallation of the brewery still in progress, the taproom and restaurant is now open for business from 11 AM to 9 PM seven days a week.

France: Wheat and barley sowing underway, farmers concerned about frequent showers
|
Wheat and barley sowing is underway in France, with farmers facing frequent showers that have raised concern about a repeat of last year's campaign that saw torrential rain slash the crop area in the European Union's biggest grain grower, Successful Farming reported on October 9.
For soft wheat, France's main cereal crop, farmers had sown 6% of the expected area for next year's harvest as of October 5, farm office FranceAgriMer said.
That compared with 3% a week earlier and also 3% in the corresponding week last year, it said in a weekly cereal crop report containing its first sowing estimates for the season.
But this year's wheat sowing progress was slightly below the average of the past five years, the report showed.
For winter barley, 5% of the projected area had been drilled by October 5, less than 7% a year earlier and also lagging the five-year average, according to FranceAgriMer.
Heavy rain since late September has eased a summer drought that disrupted earlier rapeseed sowing, while also bringing back memories of a dire cereal sowing campaign last year when incessant rain led to a sharp fall in winter wheat and barley area.
After calmer weather mid-week, major northern grain belts are set for regular

Japan & Taiwan: Kirin choses Taiwan as first destination for its craft beer export
|
Kirin Holdings, a leading Japanese brewery, is set to start exporting craft beer using its small dispenser units, known as Tap Marche, which can serve up to four kinds of craft beer at a time, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on October 10.
The company has chosen Taiwan as the first destination for the export of Tap Marche. It aims to have its beer dispensers installed in 100 restaurants in Taiwan within the year by lending them free of charge.
Five different varieties of craft beer from Kirin's Spring Valley Brewery subsidiary will be offered at local Japanese, Taiwanese and other restaurants on the island. A serving, of almost 300 millilitres, will be priced at about 180 New Taiwan dollars ($6), which is about $1 more expensive than the beer of major local manufacturers.
Kirin, which is considering further overseas expansion, is currently carrying out market research focused mainly on Southeast Asia, and looking for the right time to make its next moves.
It hopes to harness demand among Taiwanese consumers, who have shown a strong appetite for new products. Imported beer and craft beer are popular in Taiwan, with imports accounting for 30% of the island's beer market.
Craft beer, which features various unique

Malaysia: Most analysts don’t think Budget 2021 will bring a beer excise duty increase
|
Brewers, among the hardest-hit businesses during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, could face a protracted recovery from Covid-19 given the multiple challenges ahead, a key one being the possibility of an excise duty increase in Budget 2021, which will be tabled next month, The Edge Markets reported on October 13.
As it stands, however, most consumer analysts think the likelihood of a hike by the government is low.
This is because Malaysia’s alcohol excise duty, at RM175 per litre of alcohol by volume (ABV), is already the second-highest in the world. Raising it further would make product prices more expensive, which in turn would fuel the illicit market and result in lower tax collection for the government.
Brewers contribute more than RM2.2 billion in taxes annually. Illicit products — comprising contraband, counterfeit and unregulated beer — are still prevalent and make up 14% and 70% of the beer and stout market in Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia respectively.
Given the weak economic climate, the government is unlikely to raise the excise duty, UOB Kay Hian Research opines.
“However, it would not be too far-fetched for the authorities to entertain the idea of an excise duty hike as the last effective excise hike

UK: Coors Light beer to be rebranded as Coors
|
Molson Coors Beverage Company is to rebrand its Coors Light beer as Coors in the UK, paving the way for the launch of Coors Original next year, the Bar Magazine reported on October 12.
The company has announced a multi-million-pound investment that will build on the success of the ‘Keep it Fresh’ campaign.
It will be supported by new packaging and point of sale material, along with new glassware and dispense assets, which will be introduced to every outlet by the end of 2021.
Molson Coors will use the rebrand as a platform to expand the Coors family in the UK and across the rest of Western Europe.
Next year will see the launch of a new Coors product from the US, with the introduction of Coors Original, a “rich, golden lager” with a “more complex, fuller flavour”.
Sophie Jamieson, marketing controller for the Coors Family of brands at Molson Coors, said: “Coors has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, becoming the leader of the premium 4% beer category, known for being a great tasting beer that always delivers on refreshment.
“Having reflected on the unique strengths of the brand, we saw an opportunity to maximise its potential. Our testing has shown that consumers love the

Portugal: Super Bock adds gluten-free beer variant to its range
|
Portuguese beer brand Super Bock has launched a gluten-free beer variant, which it says is one of the first to be approved by the Portuguese Coeliac Association (APC), ESM reported on October 12.
The new Super Bock Sem Glúten has been certified by the AOECS Standard for gluten-free foods and is now part of the permanent Super Bock range.
According to estimates from the Portuguese Coeliac Association (APC), about 1% of the Portuguese population, or approximately 100,000 people, have the condition.
The beer is made of all the natural ingredients used in other Super Bock beers, such as water, barley malt, unmalted cereals, and hops.
During the manufacturing process, the addition of a special enzyme separates and eliminates the potentially inflammatory nature of gluten, the company added.
The Super Bock Sem Glúten is the result of a joint research collaboration between the master brewers of the Super Bock Group and specialists from the Portuguese Coeliac Association, the company added.
The gluten-free beer is available in packs of 33cl across Portugal, in hypermarkets, supermarkets, and the HoReCa channel.

India: Latambarcem Brewers launch bottled craft beer brand MAKA di
|
Latambarcem Brewers of Goa has launched its bespoke bottled craft beer brand MAKA di, The Hindu BusinessLine reported on October 12.
The brewery has the capacity to produce 10,000 cases of beer a month, which would make it the largest ‘truly’ Indian craft beer producer. The brewery is unique with a first of its kind in-house R&D lab where the brewmasters work on 50-odd recipes at any given point of time.
MAKA di offers five different beer variants – Belgian Blanche, American Lager, Belgian Triple, Honey Ale and the Bavarian Keller. The ingredients for these have been sourced meticulously from various regions they are best known for. The sweet oranges in the Belgian Blanche come from the orange capital of the world - Valencia in Spain, the malts are sourced from Finland, Britain, and Germany, and the wild organic honey for the Honey Ale is sourced from the Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand. The Triple Ale has been curated exclusively in partnership with Lupulus Brasserie in Belgium.
The label design with astronauts as the mascot is reflective of the playful and easy style of the beer.
Co-founder and CEO of Latambarcem Brewers, Aditya Ishan Varshnei, said, “The idea is to have 10 new
