Barley news Canada: CMBTC issues its list of recommended malting barley varieties for 2021-22
The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) has issued its list of recommended malting barley varieties for the 2021-22 marketing year.

The list identifies varieties that hold the most promise for producers in terms of selection and marketability based on current acceptance in the market place. All of the varieties have been pilot tested at the CMBTC and each exhibit very good malting and brewing characteristics.

This year’s list contains not only established varieties such as CDC Copeland, AC Metcalfe and AAC Synergy, but promising newcomers as well, says Peter Watts, Managing Director of the CMBTC.

“Canada has a suite of new varieties under market development with excellent malting and brewing properties as well as improved agronomics and disease resistance,” he says. “Up-and-coming varieties such as AAC Connect, CDC Bow and CDC Fraser are among the next generation of high-quality performers that malting barley producers should consider for seeding in 2021.”

The domestic malting industry in Canada has been testing these new varieties over the past several years with positive results, while the CMBTC has been working with international customers to undertake production trials on location to gain acceptance.

“AC Metcalfe has been a remarkably successful variety worldwide for over 15 years that helped ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Michigan’s first fully Black-owned Black Calder Brewing Co. ready to launch on Black Friday
Michigan's bustling craft beer scene is about to get its first fully Black-owned brewery, the Detroit Free Press reported on November 17.

Terry Rostic and Jamaal Ewing, who bill themselves as "craft beer heads," are set to open Black Calder Brewing Co. on Black Friday, with the release of its Black IPA (7% alcohol by volume), in the Grand Rapids area.

Black Calder will sell the Black IPA exclusively out of Broad Leaf Local Beer in Kentwood, with plans to collaborate with other Michigan breweries in the coming months. It will contract with Broad Leaf Local Beer and Grand Rapids-based Brewery Vivant during its "start-up phase," with plans of opening a physical location in Grand Rapids in 2021.

“Black Calder Brewing Company was established to make great beer and provide a platform for innovation, art, culture, and inclusion in the craft beer industry,” Rostic said in a news release. “We appreciate the significance of being recognized as Michigan’s first Black-owned brewery. It’s something Michigan and the craft beer industry has been longing for, but it’s not the only thing we want to be known for.

"Our motto is simple: Make dope beer for dope people.”

Rostic and Ewing, both Michigan-born, have been in the craft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Woven Water Brewing Company opens in one of Tampa’s oldest neighborhoods
One of Tampa’s oldest building, in one of its oldest neighborhoods, just underwent a total makeover. Now, it's home to Woven Water Brewing Company, ABC Action News reported on November 16.

Located at 456 W Columbus Dr., a century ago the corner brewery was a corner drug store. In the past 100 years businesses have come and gone, and now two married couples have decided it’s their turn.

“This was an empty shell, there was nothing in here, we drafted our business plan off of Tampa Heights, we knew that this was the spot we wanted to be in,” said co-owner Jay Jones.

As word got out, there was a buzz around the neighborhood.

“They’ll say I’ve been driving by this building for 20 years, I’ve lived in this neighborhood for decades and I’ve just been waiting for something to come and make this space for us,” said co-owner Niki Childs.

It turns out the brewing and renovations were the easy part. Just a few months from their scheduled grand opening in June, the pandemic put their dreams on hold.

“It really taught us perseverance, we knew we were going to open and we just didn’t know how long it was going to take, and what ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: The Warbler Brewery coming to Delmar on November 25
Delmar will soon be getting a new microbrewery when The Warbler Brewery opens later this month, the Albany Times Union reported on November 16.

The new brewery and tap room owned by award-winning brewer Chris Schell is set to open Nov. 25 at 155 Delaware Ave., where Mercato's restaurant used to be located. The site is across from the Hannaford supermarket.

The Warbler will join The Real McCoy and Royal Meadery, both located in the Four Corners on Hallwood Road, as Delmar micro brewers. The Royal Meadery makes mead, which is a wine-like drink made out of honey. The Real McCoy makes beer.

Schell, a Delmar native, has spent his career making beer for other companies such as Cooperstown Brewing in Milford, Butternuts Beer & Ale in Garrattsville before becoming the head brewer at Robin Hood Brewing in Bellefonte, Pa.

Over the years, Schell has won national and regional brewing awards. He's known for his ability to use ingredients from the culinary world in his beer.

“Over the past decade, I’ve learned to create beers that are fun to drink and appeal to a wide variety of tastes,” Schell said. “I’m passionate about making well-crafted, flavorful beer, and the opportunity to share that with ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: North Basin Brewing launches in Okanagan Valley community
A new brewery and taproom that aims to be a “tribute to Osoyoos and the people who fill it with fun” has opened its doors in the small Okanagan Valley community, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 16.

North Basin Brewing has been founded by local residents Wes and Catherine Greve, with Kody Rosentreter relocating from Alberta earlier this year to oversee the brewing program.

While the opening beer line-up hasn’t been announced, an April article in the South Okanagan Times-Chronicle quoted Wes Greve as saying that he expected the brewery to offer “your traditional IPA, pale ale, pilsner, kolsch,” while Rosentreter added that he “likes to brew beer that’s approachable and that people like to drink.”

North Basin Brewing is located at Unit 226, 15 Park Place in Osoyoos, and is open from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.

Brewery news USA, PA: Iron Hill Brewery to open its 19th location in Exton in December, Victory Brewing Co. postpones opening to next year
The pandemic has stalled two major beer-related projects, though they are still on track, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on November 13.

Iron Hill Brewery is looking for a December 2020 opening of its 19th location, which also will be its first full-scale production facility, in Exton. This also will bring the local brewpub giant into the retail business; it’s now selling four-packs in Delaware and soon in Pennsylvania.

In September 2019, Iron Hill announced it had signed a 20-year lease for an 18,000-square-foot facility at the Shops on Eagleview Boulevard in Uwchlan Township. The opening of the 10,000-square-foot brewery, 4,500-square-foot taproom, and a private dining room that can seat 150 had been targeted for summer 2020. This location will be able to move 20,000 barrels of beer, more than three times the capacity of its other restaurants, including a Center City location at 11th and Market Streets.

There is a new target date for Downingtown-based Victory Brewing Co.'s plans for a 14,000-square-foot taproom and brewery at 1776 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Logan Square, previously a TGI Fridays.

Announced in October 2019, the location will feature three full bars (two indoor, one outdoor), a full kitchen, 3,500 square feet of outdoor space that includes street-level ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: MachineHead Brewing Co. ready to open in Clovis
The owners of a new Clovis brewery are finally set to open this weekend after the pandemic put a snag in their plans, KFSN-TV reported on November 14.

"Our plan was to launch rodeo weekend and we were slated to be right on time with that schedule. As soon as we got shut down we thought it was going to be a two-week thing.... and we are now at seven or eight months later," says owner Rob Arabian.

Arabian and his wife, a pediatric nurse, are the owners of MachineHead Brewing Co.

It was a cozy concept that had been brewing in their minds for the better part of a decade before deciding to make it a reality in 2020.

"We are the first neighborhood brewery in the Central Valley. And we're off the bike trail, bike trail 13. We get a lot of joggers and bikers. We even have a bike rack here for everybody," he says.

You won't find any big screen TVs or even WiFi here but guests will experience a beautifully designed 6,000-square foot facility that opens up to a large beer garden.

"We're all about everybody just reconnecting, come on in unplug and reconnect with people," says Arabian.

The couple has poured ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev launches hot sauce Bud Light Chelada Fuego beer
AB InBev has infused its Bud Light Chelada with a hot sauce to release a new spicy variant in the US, FoodBev.com reported on November 17.

Bud Light Chelada Fuego has been created in partnership with Mexican-American hot sauce brand Tapatio.

Bud Light Chelada first launched in 2008 and combines the beer with a Clamato tomato cocktail. The Mexican-inspired drink is available in original, mango and extra lime variants.

The brand’s new spicy offering is designed to give an “extra kick”, with the same 4.2% ABV.

Desiree Sanchis, senior brand manager at Bud Light, said: “Bud Light Chelada already has such a bold flavour loved by many, but we wanted to spice things up a bit and partner with Tapatio to give consumers the first-ever hot sauce infused Chelada.

“We are always pushing to innovate and provide consumers what they didn’t know they needed but always wanted.”

Tapatio vice president, Luis Saavedra, added: “Our team likes to have fun, and that’s what Bud Light is all about too. We are so excited to have Tapatio highlighted as the kick to the new Bud Light Chelada Fuego.”

Bud Light Chelada Fuego is available to buy in stores nationwide.

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine exports around 80% of this season’s exportable barley surplus
Ukraine has exported 3.4 million tonnes of barley in the first four months of the 2020/21 July-June season, using around 80% of this season's exportable surplus, analyst APK-Inform said on November 18.

Poor weather has cut the barley harvest to 7.98 million tonnes this year from 8.92 million tonnes in 2019, reducing possible export to 4.2 million tonnes in 2010/21 from almost 5 million tonnes a season earlier.

The consultancy said China was the major export destination for Ukrainian barley this season with the volume of 2.3 million tonnes, almost three time more than in the same period in 2019/20.

Ukraine also exported 334,200 tonnes of barley to Saudi Arabia, which used to be the leading importer of Ukrainian barley for many years, and 245,000 tonnes to Libya.

Ukraine accounts for about 16% of global grain exports and sold 56.7 million tonnes of various grains to foreign buyers in the 2019/20 season. In the 2020/21 season, the export could decrease to 47 million tonnes, the economy ministry has said.

Brewery news Indonesia: Lawmakers discussing bill banning alcohol consumption
Indonesia lawmakers are discussing a bill to ban the consumption of alcoholic beverages, AsiaNews.it reported on November 13.

If adopted the Alcohol Beverages Bill will punish “Anyone who consumes alcohol as stated in Article No 7” with a sentence of “to three months to two years imprisonment” or a fine of “10 million to 50 million rupiahs.”

This appears in Article 20 (Chapter VI) relating to criminal charges included in the Alcohol Beverages Bill.

There are three types of alcoholic beverages – Alcohol A, B, and C – in Indonesia based on the quantity of alcohol. Traditionally home-made alcohol is sometimes pure, made from certain fruits or mixed with other ingredients.

Prosecution will be more rigorous if the violation is harmful to others. In this case, violators can receive a sentence of up to five years and a fine of 100 million rupiahs.

Producers of illegal alcoholic beverages can receive up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to a billion rupiahs.

The three categories of alcohol content are:

Alcohol A: at least 1-5% ethanol; Alcohol B: 5-20% ethanol. Alcohol C: more than 20-55 % ethanol.

However, the bill will not legally respect Indonesian tribal groups who use home-made alcoholic beverages as part of their traditional rituals ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev to fully integrate Camden Town Brewery into the wider group
It’s the end of an era for Camden Town Brewery as owner AB InBev plots a restructure at the craft brewer to fully integrate it into the wider group, The Grocer has learned.

Founder Jasper Cuppaidge, who sold the London-based brewery to AB InBev for £85 mln in December 2015, will step back from the business into a consultant role, while CEO Adam Keary will leave in March after managing the transition into the parent’s UK division, a letter sent to Camden’s on and off-trade customers revealed.

A number of roles across the executive, finance and sales teams at Camden are being looked at in the shake-up as AB InBev seeks to simplify the business and eradicate duplication. Many of the functions are expected to be moved and run centrally from the London headquarters of Budweiser Brewing Group, the UK arm of the brewing giant headed by Paula Lindenberg.

AB InBev is currently running a consultation process with the employees at Camden about the changes, with the final number of jobs to be axed yet to be finalised.

The remaining staff in production, engineering, supply chain and distribution at Camden’s breweries in Kentish Town and Enfield, the warehouses and back office will continue to ...More info on site
