Brewery news South Africa: Heineken® tops Sunday Times Top Brands’ beer category
Heineken South Africa has announced that Heineken® continues its winning streak as South Africa's favourite beer brand, following the beer rising to the top of the beer category of the Sunday Times Top Brands, for a fourth consecutive year in 2020.

“Winning in the beer category of Sunday Times Top Brands for the fourth year in a row is a testament to the love South African beer drinkers have for the brand,” says Lauren Muller, marketing manager for Heineken®. “Like the iconic red star on the green bottle, this win acts as a stamp of approval for their favourite tasting premium beer and we are tremendously proud of this achievement,” adds Muller.

“It also illustrates that South African beer drinkers share a global passion for quality and consistency. In over 190 countries, Heineken® is revered for its consistent quality and crisp taste that has been setting the brand apart for more than 150 years. The premium nature of our beer and its global appeal connects with consumers, especially during moments of joy and entertainment, in particular through our memorable and light-hearted advertising, our sponsorship of the world’s most recognised sporting events, and impactful, and engaging events and experiences,” concludes Muller.

Brewery news Malaysia: New hard liquor regulations expected to have minimal impact on local breweries earnings
The imposition of new hard liquor regulations by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is expected to have a minimal impact on the earnings of local breweries and general retail store operators due to the small volumes involved, The Malaysian Reserve reported on November 19.

DBKL in a statement said sundry and grocery shops, convenience stores and Chinese medicine shops in KL will not be allowed to sell hard liquor starting Oct 1 next year.

“We are neutral on this development. Malaysia’s hard liquor volumes are small and the impact on both convenience stores and breweries is expected to be minimal,” said Maybank Investment Bank Bhd’s Jade Tam.

The investment bank maintains a negative view on the consumer sector in expectations of a prolonged weak consumer sentiment due to lower disposable income in light of the negative impacts of Covid-19.

For the listed convenience store players, earnings impact is expected to be minimal for both 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd and MyNews Holdings Bhd as alcohol sales are estimated to account for less than 10% of their respective revenues.

7-Eleven, which has 2,400 stores nationwide, was unchanged on November 18 at RM1.34 and MyNews, with 530 outlets, closed at at 64 sen, also unchange.

Tam does not foresee ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Barley crop quality very good this year
Canada’s barley crop, estimated at 10.4 mln tonnes, is of very good quality this year, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in November.

Supplies to the malting industry seemed to be secure and easy, and the Southern Alberta feed lots could count on feed barley from the North and Saskatchewan to replace last year’s large corn imports from the U.S.

The large interest from China changed markets, feed barley prices rose by C$50 per tonne since early September to C$270, track Lethbridge. FOB Vancouver prices for feed barley as of early November were USD245, for malting barley USD270 per tonne.

A great export season of 3.0 to 3.5 mln tonnes barley is anticipated, while domestic procurement has become much more difficult.
