Canada: Barley crop quality very good this year
|
Canada’s barley crop, estimated at 10.4 mln tonnes, is of very good quality this year, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in November.
Supplies to the malting industry seemed to be secure and easy, and the Southern Alberta feed lots could count on feed barley from the North and Saskatchewan to replace last year’s large corn imports from the U.S.
The large interest from China changed markets, feed barley prices rose by C$50 per tonne since early September to C$270, track Lethbridge. FOB Vancouver prices for feed barley as of early November were USD245, for malting barley USD270 per tonne.
A great export season of 3.0 to 3.5 mln tonnes barley is anticipated, while domestic procurement has become much more difficult.

USA, WI, PA & TN: City Brewing Co. considering a sale – sources
|
City Brewing Co., a contract beer-brewer, is considering a sale, according to people with knowledge of the matter, Bloomberg reported on November 19.
The company could fetch more than $1 billion in a sale, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information.
City Brewing hasn’t made a final decision to pursue a sale, the people said.
A representative for City Brewing didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
City Brewing produces about 40 different brew recipes for contract brewing customers including Guinness Blonde American Lager, The Bronx Brewery and Duquesne Pilsner. It also operates a packaging business as well as warehouses and distribution services, according to its website.
The company operates three facilities, one each in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

USA, NC: Noblebräu Brewing to hold grand opening on November 21
|
Noblebräu Brewing will be celebrating its grand opening in Brevard this Saturday, Nov. 21, starting at noon, The Transylvania Times reported on November 18.
Noblebräu Brewing is the brainchild of Cody Noble. Noble, a Brevard High School graduate, was a member of the first group of students to complete the Blue Ridge Community College brewing certificate program back in 2014. While taking classes he worked as a bartender at Brevard Brewing Company and Oskar Blues Brewery where he eagerly learned as much as he could about the craft.
During this time, he was concocting many home brews that he shared around town. His basement brewery operation helped him grow a bit of a following, and soon, he was ready to take the next step in his journey.
Noble signed on with Boojum Brewing Company in Waynesville in 2015. It is with Boojum that he learned to brew on a larger scale, hone in on his recipe development and solidify that he knew a thing or two about making delicious beer.
Noble had always dreamt of having his own brewery, but never thought that the opportunity would come this early. In the spring of 2018, while attending the grand opening of Vescovo Neighborhood Eatery, there

USA, CT: These Guys Brewing Co. to move into larger location and expand brewing operations
|
These Guys Brewing Co. plans to move from its Franklin Street location of five years into a two-story brick building at 49 Church St. in Norwich, with plans for an expanded brewing operation, a restaurant and bar on the main floor and rooftop seating and bar offering “spectacular views of the harbor,” the restaurant’s permit application states.
The Church Street building was constructed in 1955 to house the growing Beth Jacob Religious School, with a full-size gymnasium in the basement and classrooms on the main floor.
The Commission on the City Plan held a public hearing on November 17 and voted unanimously to approve the special permit for the plan.
The plan will give These Guys, owned by Rebecca and Raymond Alberts, the opportunity to expand its brewing operation with a canning line and possibly a tasting room in the expansive basement, which features 15-foot-high ceilings. A concept plan layout shows 18 brewing tanks in the basement. The plan for the main floor restaurant and bar shows seating for about 80 diners, plus a bar with 18 stools. The rooftop layout shows seating for 94, plus a bar with 22 stools. Access to the rooftop would be from the interior of the building,

The Manassas-based, veteran-owned brewery opened its Market Common Clarendon “brewpub and roastery” at 2900 Wilson Blvd in the spring of 2017. It featured booths handmade from barrel pieces, 18 craft beers on tap, a contemporary food menu, cocktails, wine, and Veritas Coffee.
The restaurant received generally favorable reviews for its food and drinks, garnering 4.5 stars on Yelp, but suffered during the pandemic from a location with only minimal outdoor seating space.

Malaysia: New hard liquor regulations expected to have minimal impact on local breweries earnings
|
The imposition of new hard liquor regulations by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is expected to have a minimal impact on the earnings of local breweries and general retail store operators due to the small volumes involved, The Malaysian Reserve reported on November 19.
DBKL in a statement said sundry and grocery shops, convenience stores and Chinese medicine shops in KL will not be allowed to sell hard liquor starting Oct 1 next year.
“We are neutral on this development. Malaysia’s hard liquor volumes are small and the impact on both convenience stores and breweries is expected to be minimal,” said Maybank Investment Bank Bhd’s Jade Tam.
The investment bank maintains a negative view on the consumer sector in expectations of a prolonged weak consumer sentiment due to lower disposable income in light of the negative impacts of Covid-19.
For the listed convenience store players, earnings impact is expected to be minimal for both 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd and MyNews Holdings Bhd as alcohol sales are estimated to account for less than 10% of their respective revenues.
7-Eleven, which has 2,400 stores nationwide, was unchanged on November 18 at RM1.34 and MyNews, with 530 outlets, closed at at 64 sen, also unchange.
