Canada, ON: Waterloo Brewing announces financial results for Q3 to October 25
|
Waterloo Brewing Ltd., Ontario's first craft brewery, announced financial results for the third quarter ending October 25, 2020.
Net revenue grew +40.2% to C$22.8 million, and EBITDA grew +18.7% to C$4.0 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2020. Gross profit margin declined in the third quarter to 21.9%.
"We are pleased with our performance in the third quarter, posting revenue growth of +40.2% and EBITDA growth of +18.7% compared to the previous year," stated George Croft, President, and CEO, Waterloo Brewing. "The strength of our brands is particularly evident in all retail channels where growth on our Laker family is +5%, Landshark +16%, and Waterloo Craft +16%. The grocery channel continues to expand during the COVID pandemic and pushed our third quarter growth to +51% in this channel."
"The challenges of last nine months presented a number of new obstacles for us, as it did for many other businesses. This included the increased cost and availability of aluminum cans, the associated cost of COVID related to keeping our employees safe, and the need to outsource some owner brand production to meet demand in advance of new operating capital being commissioned. We met each challenge head-on and we never lost sight of

USA, MI: Niles Brewing Company to open December 12 in Niles
|
A new brewery in Niles is planning to open December 12 with special online ordering options as Michigan remains under a partial shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ABC 57 reported on December 8.
Niles Brewing Company, located at 206 E. Main Street, is planning to offer four of its beers online.
“Once the order is lifted and we can have indoor dining, we will adjust to a reservation only system to be in compliance with limit restrictions,” said owner Brandon Townsley.
The epidemic order that places restrictions on restaurants and bars was extended until December 20 in an announcement made by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on December 7. Restaurants are only allowed to offer outdoor dining, takeout and delivery while the order in in effect.
Townsley said they will have the beers canned and ready to go for opening of the nanobrewery.
A photo and description of each canned beer option will be released each day during the week of the opening.
The plan is to make the beers available to order online at 10 a.m. on December 12 and offer three different pickup days for orders.
The pickup days will be December 12 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., December 13 from 12 p.m. to 4

USA, NY: Auburn’s Prison City Brewing opens second location
|
Auburn’s Prison City Brewing, which has won local acclaim and national recognition since it opened its downtown brewpub in December 2014, has opened a second location, Syracuse.com reported on December 9.
This new spot at 251 North St. has a 14,000-square-foot brewhouse and taproom, located on a 5-acre former farm. The brewhouse has a 20-barrel per batch system, four times the 5-barrel system at the brewpub downtown.
The brewpub, at 28 State St., remains open as a full-service bar and restaurant, with the small-batch “pilot” brewhouse.
“Right now, this is all about increasing production,” said Marc Schulz, who owns Prison City with his wife, Dawn. “We can make and sell more beer.”
That would include Mass Riot, a hazy New England-style IPA that has earned Prison City awards and medals from national publications and beer festivals.
“We sell 14 (packs of Mass Riot) for one of everything else,” Schulz said.
But there are plenty of others: The North Street taproom beer list this week had 16 beers, including at least five New England IPAs, plus offerings of lager, pilsners, pale ale, sour, stout and more. They’re available for on-premises drinking (under current restrictions), draft to-go in growlers or 4-pack cans — and there is curbside pick-up.

USA, CA: COVID-19 forces San Marcos Brewery to permanently shut its doors
|
San Marcos Brewery recently announced that they are permanently shutting their doors after a 27-year run in the Old California Restaurant Row shopping center in San Marcos due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Coast News Group reported.
The popular North County brewery made the announcement on Nov. 19 with a short post on their Facebook page:
“Well, the time has come. With the restrictions of COVID-19 and the purple tier, the Brewery has suspended its operations. We’ve had a good 27-year run and now it’s time to call it… done. Thank you all for the support through the years. We wish you well. Cheers to a better year! 2021.”
The post has more than a hundred comments of residents expressing their sadness and frustration over having to say goodbye to a staple of their community, one which many have grown up with.
The brewery, which opened in 1993 at 1080 W. San Marcos Blvd., was known for being the first micro-brewery in North County where its brewers produced English-style ales and oatmeal stout beers.
“They couldn’t hold on any longer… we’re at a really difficult point in time and our state leaders really need to pay attention,” San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones said. “I believe

Australia: Shortages of Corona beer to continue into the holidays
|
Shortages of Corona beer in Australia will continue into the holidays, according to distributor Carlton & United Breweries, the Australian Brews News reported on December 10.
CUB said that increased demand and low supply due to logistics issues in shipping the beer over are causing the shortages.
In April, AB InBev, owners of Corona parent company Grupo Modelo, halted production of the beer after the Mexican government declared a national health emergency.
A spokesperson for CUB said that specific states would be affected by the shortages.
“These shortages will continue in coming weeks and we expect retailers, particularly in NSW and Victoria, will be intermittently out of stock,” they said.
“The shortages are due to a recent increase in demand along with supply issues stemming from COVID-19, particularly international shipping congestion and issues at Australian ports.
“More than 600,000 cartons of Corona will be delivered between this week and the end of December which will help replenish stock and meet the increased demand.”
Despite the shortages and associations with the pandemic virus, in August Corona was named the world’s most valuable beer brand, valued at US$8.1 billion.
CUB reclaimed Corona distribution rights from Lion in 2016 following the acquisition by AB InBev of its then-parent company SABMiller.
