Brewery news USA, PA: Trace Brewing to debut in Bloomfield on December 17
Even with Pennsylvania in an end-of-the-year pandemic lockdown and with a winter storm on the way, David Kushner still has waited long enough to debut his Trace Brewing in Bloomfield, the Pittsburgh Business Times reported.

After recently getting the final permits needed to open, Kushner has scheduled the opening of Trace Brewing for Thursday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. Trace will be selling a selection of five different brews in 16-ounce four-packs of cans on a to-go basis to meet state Covid requirements.

Noting all the challenges to get to the point of opening in a year largely turned upside down by Covid-19, Kushner acknowledges some unknowns in the coming weeks and winter months.

"It’s almost impossible to project what our demand will be," he said. "All of 2020 has been very unpredictable."

Yet he sees reason for hope in the roll out of a vaccine this week to suggest that beer drinkers and coffee sippers can soon hang out in his newly built-out brewery space at 4312 Main St. It is housed in a modest-sized former industrial building across from the Community Market at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and the Bloomfield Bridge — a major neighborhood gateway.

Amid the dense residential neighborhoods of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Long Way Brewing opens its doors in Radford
Radford’s new and only craft brewery just opened its doors last week, WDBJ7 reported on December 11.

Long Way Brewing opened shop in the city’s vacant Seventh Day Adventist Church building, sitting above Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread.

Maintaining the church’s stone structure, original church pews and windows, the space was picked by its owners to help with downtown revitalization.

The idea for the brewery came about six years ago and just so happened to pan out now to open, even during the pandemic.

“We did want to open earlier, but we decided to wait a while. We figured hit 2020 with a bang,” said co-owner Rob Gropman. “Since it’s been so bad this is the good thing.”

Long Way’s mission is to provide free lunch through the Meals on Wheels program downstairs through Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread. They do this by asking customers to round up to the nearest dollar on each transaction.

Co-founders Rob Gropman, Keith Weltens and Jeff Kleppin hope the space will eventually serve as a venue for special events. The name Long Way comes from the long mission Mary Draper Ingles took to escape captivity when she was captured by the Shawnee. Similarly, the co-founders took a long journey to make this a reality.

Brewery news USA, NY: Sand City Brewery’s second outpost in Lindenhurst close to being finished
Sand City South, the Lindenhurst second outpost of popular Northport brewery Sand City Brewery, is close to being finished, owners say, and now to-go cans can be purchased from the location, Patch.com reported on December 8.

Six varieties of Sand City beer can be picked up from the garage door of the in-progress brewery at 150 S. Wellwood Ave.

In a social media post on December 9 the owners said "we are finishing up our tasting room and finishing touches on production space." The brewery and tasting room have been under construction since early 2020.

The to-go beer can be grabbed from 12 to 6 p.m. and include IPA, stouts and Belgian tripel brews. The brewery says they will continue to offer to-go sales from the Lindenhurst spot.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Readington Brewery and Hop Farm eyeing launch of brewing facility in May
Readington Brewery and Hop Farm, one of the largest hop farms in New Jersey, plans to open a beer production facility and tasting room in May, making it New Jersey's first brewery on a hop farm, MyCentralJersey.com reported on December 16.

It's located on a 25-acre farm with a 3,700-square-foot “farm chic” brewing facility and tasting room, said co-owner Braun Kiess, a Bedminster resident. By doubling the hop fields from its current acre-and-a-half, Readington Brewery and Hop Farm will also become one of the largest hop farms in the state.

“Beer in many ways is starting to become like wine from a tasting and brewing perspective and here, you will be able to taste the terroir in the styles that we make,” Kiess said. “People will see the crops in the field and the ‘bine to stein,’ as we like to say.” A bine is the stem of a hop plant.

The brewery will focus on quality, classic beers made with local ingredients and yet true-to-style from different regions — for example, a pilsner reminiscent of German style, another of the Czech Republic, and a third from the U.S. There will also be other styles of beer there, such as lagers, porters, stouts, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AR: Lost Forty Brewing to open new speciality brewery in Little Rock
Fresh off of its “Best Mid-Size Craft Brewing Company” national award from the Great American Beer Festival, Lost Forty has announced it will open a new restaurant and speciality brewery at 822 E. Sixth St. in the former home of East Sixth Brewing, neé Rebel Kettle, which announced on Instagram on December 15 that it will permanently close, the Arkansas Times reported.

In a news release, Lost Forty brewer and production manager Dylan Yelenich expressed enthusiasm about the new facility, stating: “Our brewing team is excited about adding to our capacity for small batch and experimental project production. Having more opportunity to be creative will be fun for our team and our patrons.”

Lost Forty has been doing a wild barrel project series since 2017. The brewery also took home a 2020 gold medal from The Great American Beer Festival in the “Brett Beer” category for its “Bottle Conditioned Day Drinker,” an experimental beer brewed in bottles with the wild yeast Brettanomyces, colloquially known as “Brett,” which grows on the skin of fruit.

The new location will focus on offering small batch beers brewed on-site alongside Lost Forty’s classic and seasonal brews. Executive chef Scott McGehee and his culinary team will create the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Penguin City Brewing Co. buys warehouse in downtown Youngstown with plans of relocating its production line
Penguin City Brewing Co. has bought the former Republic warehouse in downtown Youngstown with plans to invest $3.7 million to relocate its production line and open a taproom / restaurant, event center and rental space, the Youngstown Vindicator reported on December 15.

The brewing company bought the 32,704-square-foot space for $575,000, according to co-owner Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki. The building contains a little more than 5,100 square feet of office space and more than 27,500-square feet of warehouse space, giving the beer maker plenty of room to grow.

“The concern we had when looking for a place was getting something too small and having to keep adding on. The Republic warehouse gives us the room to add more tanks as we continue to grow and distribute more,” Lyras-Bernacki said.

“It still hasn’t quite settled in that this is ours. We have been working nonstop since August of 2018 looking for our forever home, and we knew Penguin City had to be in the heart of the city,” Lyras-Bernacki said.

Penguin City is considering a 20-barrel brewhouse plus fermentation and conditioning tanks at the site. The company brews about 120 barrels per month now at Paladin Brewing and the B&O location, both in Youngstown.

Brewery news South Korea: Alcoholic beverage companies eyeing to boost at home consumption
South Korea's alcoholic beverage companies are eyeing to boost alcohol consumption at home with the COVID-19 outbreak decimating hospitality businesses across South Korea, EconoTimes reported on December 16.

Restaurants and bars, usually packed with group dinner reservations as the year ends, are forced to close after 9 p.m. in Seoul and surrounding areas under strict social distancing rules.

An official at liquor manufacturer HiteJinro said that while they are not protesting the government’s policy to limit opening hours, the industry is left in poor shape and forced to focus on the home drinking market.

There are over 1,000 daily coronavirus cases in South Korea.

December and the summer months are the peak sales seasons for the industry.

With the pandemic changing people‘s drinking patterns, wine has become more popular being preferred by home drinkers.

HiteJinro registered an annual sales growth of 11.2 percent for wine on December 14.

Meanwhile, sales of imported whiskey and beer are set to shrink this year, being more reliant on bar sales.

Alcohol beverage makers are also prioritizing packaging and diversifying their range of products for those drinking at home.

Brewery news India: Competition Commission of India taking closer look at alleged beer price cartelisation by leading brewers
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is taking a closer look at beer manufacturers for alleged price cartelisation. CNBC-TV18 has learnt that the top executives of Carlsberg, SABMiller and United Breweries are to be summoned soon by the CCI.

The allegation is that executives colluded to fix beer prices in India between 2007 and October 2018.

In 2018 the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in 2018 had raided the offices of the three brewers, which together account for roughly 90 percent of India's beer market.

A Reuters report earlier in the day said the CCI inquiry found that the companies regularly and collectively strategized in seeking price increases in "several states", forging a cartel the CCI said gave them more bargaining power with state authorities.

The companies also used the All India Brewers Association (AIBA) as a "common platform" to decide collectively on prices; and the local group then lobbied on the companies' behalf for price increases, said the Reuters report, quoting the CCI probe.

United Breweries has responded saying, "The case under reference is currently pending before the Competition Commission of India and the company has extended full co-operation to the relevant authorities throughout the process and will present its submissions to the Competition ...More info on site

Brewery news The Dominican Republic: Cervecería Nacional Dominicana instals new line of cans to tackle bottle shortages in the country
Cervecería Nacional Dominicana inaugurated a new line of cans that expands its product packaging offer, and signed an agreement with Caribbean Glass Industry for the reactivation of the glass industry in the Dominican Republic, beginning the production of bottles in the country as of 2021, since it recognizes that, in recent months, and the context of the current health crisis, it has experienced a decline in the availability of its products, the Dominican Today reported on December 11.

The brewery explained that this decline was caused by the shortage of bottles. Due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, glass companies at the regional level were forced to close their ovens, causing a decrease in supply.

The company stated that it is committed to re-establishing the correct supply of the market and being able to guarantee products to all its clients to continue providing the Dominicans with the beer they are proud of.

Brewery news South Africa: President reintroduces restrictions on alcohol sales amid second wave of Covid-19
In a national address on Monday, 14 December, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced tighter Level 1 lockdown restrictions amid the second wave of Covid-19 infections in South Africa. Among the amendments are reintroduced restrictions on alcohol sales, BizCommunity reported.

The sale of alcohol from retail outlets will only be permitted between 10am and 6pm from Monday to Thursday, and alcohol consumption in all public spaces, such as beaches and parks, is strictly forbidden.

Registered wineries and wine farms may continue to offer tastings and wine sales to the public for off-site consumption over weekends. “This exception is being made due to the vital contribution of these establishments to the tourism sector in several parts of the country,” said the President.

As the curfew has been extended and will now be from 11pm to 4am, bars and restaurants must close at 22:00 to allow staff to get home.

The South African alcohol industry has stated that it supports the government's risk-adjusted approach of applying measured interventions focused on hotspot areas. However, the significant restriction put on the off-consumption outlets to trade only from 10am to 6pm on Monday to Thursday is an area of concern.

"Like grocery shops, off-consumption retailers have demonstrated effort to adhere to the ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Colonia beer from Hesse banned from sale in Cologne and surrounding state of North Rhine-Westphalia
A beer called Colonia from the state of Hesse has been banned from sale in Cologne and its surrounding state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Officials fear it could be confused with the Rhineland's famous Kölsch brew, DW reported on December 13.

The western German city of Cologne is known for its laid-back attitude, epitomized in its world-famous Carnival celebrations.

But when it comes to beer, fun obviously has its limits.

The consumer protection agency from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has now banned a beer called Colonia, produced by a Frankfurt brewery, from being sold in NRW, where Cologne is situated.

The State Agency for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection (LANUV) said the Frankfurt beer's name and label could lead consumers to think they were buying Kölsch, a beer that is brewed in Cologne and the surrounding area.

The word Colonia harks back to the Latin name of the Roman colony from which the city developed, Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. The label of the Colonia beer features the contours of Cologne's iconic cathedral and one of its landmark bridges. Advertising for the beer said that its character recalled "a Kölsch in its original classic form."

The term "Kölsch" has a protected geographical indication (PGI) within the ...More info on site
