USA, TX: Toppled Turtle Brewing Company opens its doors in Dumas
|
Pre COVID-19, the number of craft breweries opening in Texas was on the rise. As craft brew sales increase during the pandemic, the demand for craft beer is growing, abc7amarillo.com reported on December 23.
In Dumas, the first brewery inside the city limits opened its doors on Wednesday December 23, at 11 a.m.
“On the east and west coast craft breweries have been big for a long time but as many people know in the center of the nation things take a little while to catch on," said J.L. Wiswell, owner of Toppled Turtle Brewing Company.
The owner of the Toppled Turtle Brewing Company is optimistic that craft brew fever will catch fire.
Opening a new brewery in the heart of the downtown across from the Moore County Courthouse and next to other businesses took longer than anticipated.
A number of zoning laws had to be ironed out.
“Written specifically in our zoning was that breweries are considered chemical plants so I thought it would be easy, " said Wiswell. "We did have to go before zoning and have it changed to allow for a brewery in Dumas, Texas.”

USA, FL: Stormhouse Brewing opening this spring in Palm Beach
|
Pints will be poured and sandwiches will be served at a restaurant opening this spring in Palm Beach’s Crystal Cove Commons plaza, the Palm Beach Post reported on December 23.
Stormhouse Brewing, a 5,200-square-foot eatery and brewery owned by four members of the Brinzo family and three other partners, will offer a wide variety of house-made craft beers and a full menu of chef-inspired dishes.
"We'll serve gastropub-type food," said Brian Brinzo, a Cleveland native and one of the eatery's owners. His sons Josh and Chris and his brother Brad are among the others.
"We don't want to have normal bar food. We'll have a rotating menu, and we'll offer specials. We'll have some Florida specials, like fresh fish and other delicacies."
Construction on the restaurant began last month, though plans have been in the works for two years, Brinzo said.
The owners signed a lease agreement in February, but permitting and other delays pushed back the start date by about four or five months.
"Everything got held up," Josh Brinzo said. "It was unfortunate, but those are the circumstances of 2020."
Stormhouse Brewing is the first restaurant venture for members of the Brinzo family, who previously have been involved in home brewing.

USA, IA: Kinship Brewing Company set to open in Waukee on January 1

Every beer at Kinship Brewing Company has a story, the Des Moines Register reported.
There's Dear Annie, a hazy IPA owner Zach Dobeck calls a love letter to his wife. An Imperial stout named Sheriff Dobeck is an homage to Dobeck's father, a former sheriff. And Oh, Billy, which Dobeck described to the Register in 2019 as a citrusy, aromatic SMASH (single malt and single hop) pal ale that pays tribute to a family friend.
At Kinship, the new, sprawling brewery on six acres of land in Waukee set to open Jan. 1, those stories are the beginning of Dobeck's ultimate goal: to build a community that goes beyond the beer.
The idea started when he was a kid, watching his father put on events to get people together. The name of the brewery, Kinship, even calls back to the theme — that everyone who enters the brewery is part of a family.
"That’s what we want to create in the Kinship taproom and in our brand — that you belong here, this is yours," Dobeck said.

USA, NY: Mixed Breed Brewing coming to Guilderland in April
|
A new brewery and taproom called Mixed Breed Brewing is set to open in a strip mall on Route 146 in Guilderland Center, the Albany Times Union reported on December 28.
An April opening is projected at the Park Guilderland Plaza. Hours will be from around 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The principal owner is Guy Bucey. The brewery will include up to 12 beers on draft and a canning line.

USA, WA: Great Notion Brewing’s fifth location launches in Seattle
|
On Tuesday, December 22, Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood gained yet another beer destination. When Great Notion Ballard officially opened at noon at the corner of NW 51st Street and 14th Avenue NW, it became Great Notion Brewing’s fifth location, and its second location to open in 2020, after the company opened a taproom on Seattle’s Airport Way South in August, newschoolbeer.com reported.
For the time being, the new spot is only selling merchandise and packaged beer to go, but CEO Paul Reiter says that when COVID restrictions are eased again it will become an all-ages taproom with indoor and outdoor seating and full dining service. And although the menu hasn’t yet been finalized, Reiter says it’s getting close.
“We really wanted to launch a fried chicken / hot chicken concept, but with COVID we are working on something better suited for to-go,” he explains. “[We] landed on some amazing new sandwiches featuring our own bbq sauces, hot sauces, mustard sauces, etc., that have Great Notion beer in them, such as our carolina gold mustard sauce featuring Ripe IPA, or our maple ancho hot sauce with Double Stack [Imperial Stout].”

Canada, BC: Howe Sound Inn and Brewing changes ownership
|
Squamish’s oldest existing craft brewery has changed hands, the Squamish Chief reported on December 23.
Howe Sound Inn and Brewing has been bought by the Viaggio Hospitality Group.
In a statement issued to The Chief on Dec. 23, the group said that it intends to keep things mostly the same.
“The award-winning craft brewery and cozy hotel has established an excellent reputation among the Sea-to-Sky community and across the country since 1996, and we are excited for the opportunity to uphold its 25-year commitment to delivering exceptional beer, food, and accommodation experiences,” reads the statement.
“Our goal is to continue the legacy of the well-loved craft beer brand that is so recognizable in Squamish and beyond. Operations will remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.”
The Viaggio Group has bought up a number of high-profile restaurants, bars and hospitality establishments in the Lower Mainland.
For instance, the company owns places such as the well-loved Waldorf, Papi’s Seafood and Oyster Bar, and even the hardcore metal and punk bar, Funky Winkerbeans.
The group said that it is expanding its roster with an acquisition of Birchbank Golf Course in Trail, BC, and has upcoming plans to open a winery in Naramata, B.C.

USA, NY: Alewife Brewing Company finally open in Sunnyside
|
Alewife, the popular Queens brewpub, finally opened in Sunnyside earlier this month and is looking to overcome the latest round of COVID-19 restrictions, the Long Island City Post reported on December 28.
The brewing company, known for its specialty IPAs and craft beers, was expected to open in April but faced construction delays and difficulty getting permits due to the pandemic.
The business is now open at 41-11 39th St. but the operators face restrictions.
Alewife was first established in Long Island City in 2011 and had expected to operate in both Long Island City and Sunnyside but the spread of COVID-19 undermined those plans.
Patrick Donagher, who owns the company with Keir Hamilton and other investors, said COVID-19 restrictions prompted them to shutter their Long Island City operation and hampered their ability to open their Sunnyside venue.
With rising rents and indoor dining restrictions, the Long Island City operation was no longer economically viable, Donagher said. Therefore, he said, they decided to move their entire operation to Sunnyside.
They faced delays, however, in opening their Sunnyside establishment. They struggled to get the equipment needed to set up the brewery delivered.

USA: AB InBev agrees to sell minority stake in can plants
|
A group of investors led by New York-based private equity firm Apollo Global Management Inc. has agreed to acquire a 49.9% minority stake in Anheuser-Busch InBev’s U.S.-based metal container plants for about $3 billion, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported on December 29.
The buying consortium includes entities advised by Apollo and its subsidiaries and a group of institutional investors, according to a release by Apollo.
The deal is slated to close by Jan. 8. AB InBev officials said separately that once the transaction is completed, it will create additional shareholder value by “optimizing its business at an attractive price” and generate funds to repay debt, in line with the company’s deleveraging commitments.
Burdened with heavy debt since its $108 billion takeover of SABMiller in 2016, the global brewer has made it a priority to raise cash to pay down its debt, selling its Australian unit to Asahi Group for $11.3 billion, cutting its dividends and attempting a $9.8 billion Hong Kong IPO.
The 2016 SABMiller deal resulted in the sale of the domestic brewer MillerCoors to Molson Coors Brewing Co., now Molson Coors Beverage Co. with headquarters in Chicago and many administrative functions in Milwaukee.

World: Corona beer fares better than most amid coronavirus pandemic
|
Corona, the Mexican beer, has come through the coronavirus pandemic better than most, CBS News reported on December 25.
Profit from the beer division of alcohol company Constellation Brands, which owns the rights to Corona in the United States, rose 13% in the late summer and fall, according to Wall Street analysts. Sales did fall slightly in the summer, dipping about 2%.
Early on in the pandemic many thought the beer brand would take a hit from its false association with the virus that causes COVID-19. Back in January, there was a flood of misinformation connecting Corona to the coronavirus. There is no connection.
Nonetheless, Google searches for "beer virus" and "corona beer virus" surged earlier this year. Corona brand's Instagram account got flooded with jokes in its comments. One commenter suggested Corona change its name to something with fewer negative connotations, "like Ebola."
Constellation decided not to address the misinformation. It also went ahead with its planned launch of a line of Corona-branded alcoholic seltzers. "We believe that consumers, by and large, understand there's no linkage between the virus and our beer/business," a spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch in January.

UK: EU exit to see VAT cut on beer on January 1
|
Breaking free from the EU on January 1 will allow UK ministers to throw traditional pubs a tax cut lifeline, industry chiefs said.
Chief executive Emma McClarkin said: "The existing VAT cut on food and soft drinks does nothing to help those pubs who rely on beer sales for their revenues, and it’s important to remember that seven in ten of all alcoholic drinks sold in pubs are beer.
“Once the UK is no longer bound by EU structures on tax the Government can take the simple step of extending the cut to cover beer sold in pubs as well.
"This would be a huge boost to those pubs that have been singled out for extraordinarily harsh treatment under lockdowns and tier systems.”
Ms McClarkin said coronavirus restrictions have left pubs facing their worst December on record “by a distance”.
“If we want there to be pubs for us to come back to once this crisis has passed they need help - and they need it urgently.
“Cutting VAT on beer sold in pubs is a small cost for the Government but would be a major boost to our brewers and pubs to the tune of £130 mln, just when they need it most."

South Africa: President announces renewed ban on alcohol sales amid second wave of coronavirus infections
|
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a renewed ban on alcohol sales and extended a curfew in a bid to contain the fallout from a second wave of coronavirus infections that have pushed the cumulative caseload past the one million mark, Bloomberg reported on December 28.
The country moved to virus alert level 3 from level 1 from midnight on Monday, Dec. 28 until Jan. 15, and the wearing of masks in public places will be made compulsory, Ramaphosa said in a televised address. Most public gatherings other than funerals will be banned, and the hours of a nationwide curfew will be extended to 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., he said.
“We are at an extremely dangerous point in our fight against the pandemic,” Ramaphosa said. “We have no choice but to observe the highest degree of vigilance.”
The pandemic and restrictions imposed to contain it have devastated Africa’s most industrialized economy with the central bank forecasting that gross domestic product will contract 8% this year. The new curbs, which come at the height of the holiday season, will deal a further blow to the beleaguered tourism and hospitality industries and make it more difficult to engineer a rebound next year.

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries’ Kaduna state plant ordered to reduce production
|
The Kaduna state is currently facing acute shortage of beer, after the state government reportedly directed the Nigerian Breweries Plc to reduce the production and sale of its products.
According to SaharaReporters, the decision is affecting marketers, who have had to resort to imports of the products from as far as Aba, Abia State, and Imo State, to bridge the supply gap.
An insider noted that the decision of the state government to direct the factory to cut down on production might be connected to the second wave of COVID-19 in the state.
But an insider at the Nigerian Breweries stated that the beer shortage, being experienced currently across the northern zone, was due to consumers’ high demand towards the festive period.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, also said the problem might last for another two weeks before the situation improved.
The NB products’ distribution, operation and consumption had been facing severe attacks in most parts of the northern states in recent times, especially in Kano and Zaria in Kaduna State, among others.
NB spokesman, Mr Danjuma, did not answer his calls as at the time of filing this report.

Belgium: Beer and chocolate categorised as ‘essential’ items during lockdowns
|
Belgium has redefined what ''essential'' means in view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic by doing the unprecedented. The Belgian government has categorised chocolate as an essential food item as certain shops were allowed to remain open during the lockdowns, WION reported on December 29.
The chocolate produced in Belgium is world-famous, and shops that sell chocolates were allowed to remain open during the lockdown, while other ''non-essential'' shops were forced shut.
One of the world's oldest and famous producers of chocolate in Belgium - Neuhaus' CEO Ignace Van Doorselaere told Sky News that chocolate is considered special in Belgian culture.
Comparing it to the cultural significance of beer and wine in France, Ignace referred to chocolate as a ''joyful product''. Food stores weren't forced shut in the country during lockdowns and chocolate makers are thankful for the same.
The other beloved product in Belgium - beer - was also being sold during the lockdown, with outlets allowed to stay open during the lockdown.
In fact, the world's first beer shop was in Belgium - Beer Mania, which opened in the 1980s. Owing to COVID-19, the bar had to shut down, but the shop remained open, even with low footfall.
