USA, ID: Idaho hop growers increase acreage in 2020
|
Hops are the primary flavor ingredient in beer, and demand has soared as craft beer has boomed. About 16% of commercial hop fields are on Idaho soil, second-most in the country behind Washington State, the Boise State Public Radio reported on December 30.
Idaho farmers added another 900 acres of hop fields in 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That’s about 10% more total acres than 2019, but the 2020 harvest was about the same as a year earlier.
Corey Coles is Chief Finance Officer at Obendorf Farms in Wilder. He said a hot end to the summer growing season was a contributing factor to “quite a bit of late-onset spider mite pressure, which drove yields down.”
Spider mites are too small to see with the naked eye, and eat the hop cones from the inside out. They also munch on the leaves of the plant, compromising its ability to photosynthesize for further growth.
The pests impacted Obendorf’s Mosaic crop, Coles said, but other hop varieties were spared. Part of that is luck, but fertilizer and chemical treatments play a role as well.

USA, CO: Steep Brewing and Coffee Company now open in Keystone
|
Steep Brewing and Coffee Company, a shop that is both a coffee roaster and craft brewery, has popped up in Keystone. The coffee house and brewery is roasting coffee beans in-house and serving both original brews as well as beers made at other local breweries. Owners Elissa and Justin Slezak are focused on serving custom, handmade beverages in a cozy, apres-type environment, the Summit Daily reported on January 2.
The two were getting ready to open up Steep last winter when the pandemic shuttered businesses across the country. Elissa Slezak said that after some thought, the duo decided to go through with opening Steep as they are confident the beverage spot will be successful in the long run. She said she feels Steep fills a need in Keystone for craft beer and specialty coffee as the area continues to grow.
“Keystone is growing right now. I think it’s experiencing a pretty good growth spurt both in full-time, year-round residents as well as … visitation opportunities for Keystone,” Elissa Slezak said.
Steep was certified under Summit County’s 5 Star Business Certification Program on Dec. 18 and opened over the weekend with 25% indoor capacity and takeout orders.

USA, NY: Peconic County Brewing the sixth craft brewery to open in Riverhead
|
Drawing its name from a long-stalled proposal for the East End to secede from Suffolk County, Peconic County Brewing is the sixth craft brewery to open in Riverhead, the Long Island Press reported on January 2.
Peconic County Brewing is coming to East Main Street in an 8,500-square-foot space on the ground floor of the new Riverview Lofts building, which opened in the fall with 116 rental units. The brewery was founded by Jeff Schaeffer, a Patchogue resident who grew up in Southampton and has deep roots in the hospitality business. The tasting room is slated to open in January.
“Riverhead is becoming a destination town like Patchogue, with people coming to visit the breweries, enjoy the walkable downtown and dine at a variety of great restaurants,” says Schaeffer, who hosts a blog and podcast called Long Island Beer Authority. “After visiting many breweries, I realized there’s a lot of terrific beer being made on Long Island. But what makes the experience special goes beyond the beer — which has to be really good, of course — but it also means having a great space, great food and a great vibe.”

USA, TX: Grain Theory brewery holds soft opening in Abilene
|
Grain Theory is a theory no more.
Ticketed soft openings were held Monday through Wednesday before Christmas at the brewery, taproom, kitchen and coffee bar on the second floor of the renovated downtown Abilene Motis Building, at 202 Pine St., the Abilene Reporter News reported.
Service since gradually has ramped up on a small scale the week of New Year's Day.
"For the most part, it's going pretty well," David Kasselman said about the soft opening.
Kasselman, Matthew Cogburn and Jeramie Sivley are co-founders in the brewery. The three met at Big Country Homebrewers and have won about 70 home-brewing awards between them. They began planning the brewery in earnest in early 2018.
In addition to craft brews, the international-inspired menu that Kasselman described as upmarket bar food. Highlights include house-made sausages of brats and boerewors, a South African style that is a nod to Kasselman's native country, with a Grain Theory IPA mustard.
Appetizers include pretzel bites with beer cheese and fries called Belgian frites.

USA, DE: First State Brewing Co. comes to Middletown

For years, Middletown's Paul Hester worked to keep the biggest bank in the United State safe from cybercrime, The News Journal reports.
If he missed something as executive director of global technology for JPMorgan Chase, the result could be really bad, to say the least.
So it's no surprise that Hester's analytical mind and attention to detail are on full display at his just-opened 11,088-square-foot production brewery and brewpub in Middletown, one of the biggest in the state.
It doesn't take much time once you're inside the industrial, yet comfortable First State Brewing Co., to see the six years of comprehensive planning that Hester put into the project.
If you were taking an leave of absence from a high-paying job like his to follow your dream, you'd want to dot your i's and cross your t's, as well. He's painstaking in everything he does. Canada, NS: Home deliveries become lifeline for Nova Scotia’s craft brewers
|
Nova Scotia's craft brewers say home deliveries have become a lifeline for their businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, CBC.ca reported on December 30.
While few breweries offered home delivery pre-pandemic, the practice became much more common after the province declared a state of emergency in March, ordered bars to close and allowed restaurants to only offer takeout and delivery.
"We did have to shut our taproom down for three months and keg sales to restaurants and bars halted, so it was a very nerve-wracking time," said Breton Brewing co-founder Bryan MacDonald. "And we definitely saw impacts on our business over the last half of the year."
Home deliveries meant the Sydney River brewery kept staff employed.
"When everyone was staying at home, this was a very good thing for us," said MacDonald.
Brian Titus, vice-president of the Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia and president of Garrison Brewing Company in Halifax, said home deliveries aren't likely to disappear anytime soon.
"It has allowed, I would say, each brewery to pivot in its own way," he said.
Jeremy White of Big Spruce Brewing in Nyanza said home deliveries skyrocketed in March, April and May.
They eventually tapered off in June and virtually disappeared in July through September.

USA, MI: Tantrick Brewing Co. relocating to larger facility

Tantrick Brewing Co. in Allegan announced plans to relocate to the city's downtown area Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, WWMT reported on December 29.
In a written statement, brewery representatives said they were spending $133,725 to redevelop a facility at 134 Water Street.
“We started out as first-time business owners renting a space just outside of Allegan, not knowing what to expect. In three short years, we have grown with the support of our neighbors, and are proud to invest in the community we have come to love with our new permanent home for Tantrick Brewing Co.,” Tanya Schafer, the brewery's owner, said. “It is very humbling and exciting to join the other small businesses working hard to revitalize Allegan's Downtown.”
Representatives said the brewery had outgrown its current location at 633 114th Avenue, and was moving to the 2,110 square foot facility to expand its production capacity.
According to the statement, Allegan city officials offered a 12-year industrial facilities tax exemption for the brewery. Joel Dye, Allegan's city manager, said the company was an important part of the city's economy.

Japan: Head of Kirin Holdings’ beer business questions closure of late-night bars and restaurants around Tokyo
|
The head of Kirin Holdings’ beer business on January 6 questioned the across-the-board closure of late-night bars and restaurants around Tokyo, saying some establishments had already introduced stringent safety measures, Reuters reported.
Japan is preparing to declare a new state of emergency, with 1,591 new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo on January 6, the highest daily total since the pandemic began.
Residents in Tokyo and surrounding areas are being asked to refrain from going out after 8 p.m. and bars and restaurants will be asked to close by that time, starting Friday, January 8.
“We don’t yet know the specifics of the new state of emergency ... but I do somewhat question taking a sweeping approach, when there are establishments which have taken very strict measures to prevent virus transmissions,” said Takayuki Fuse, head of Kirin Brewery Company.
Fuse said Kirin would accept any government decision, but added he was deeply concerned about the impact of a second lockdown on the industry and jobs.
“The restaurant and bar industry is estimated to be worth 26 trillion yen, supporting the jobs of over 4 million people,” he said during a presentation to investors outlining the brewer’s strategy for the year.

Ireland: Over 1,100 ha of winter malting barley sown in Ireland
|
Over 1,100 ha of winter malting barley was sown in Ireland last autumn, the Irish Farmers Journal reported on January 6.
Winter malting barley has been grown in trial in Ireland since 2018 and is expected to play a key part in Boortmalt’s plans to increase malt output.
Around 1,000 ha of the area is sown to Craft and 100 ha to Electrum. This year Boortmalt is also trialling Vessel (20 ha) and the BYDV tolerant variety Joyau (34 ha). The grain from these varieties will be tested to see how they perform in the malting process and if the quality of malt produced meets the standards required by maltsters. Pixel was grown on trial last year but did not meet the required malting specifications.
In addition to this, approximately 130 ha of the spring variety Laureate was sown last autumn.
With the expanding drinks industry requiring increased quantities of malting barley, Boortmalt hope to meet this demand by increasing their area of true winter malting barley.

South Australia: Beer Association of South Africa calls for lifting the ban on alcohol sales from January 16th
|
The Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) has sent an urgent call to president Cyril Ramaphosa, asking him to lift the blanket ban on alcohol from the 16th of January, BusinessTech reported on January 6.
This is imperative to ensure the survival of small business owners and craft breweries, who now find themselves on the brink of closure due to the third alcohol ban, the association said.
It said that the situation faced by small business owners and craft brewers is dire and that the last two alcohol bans had a devastating impact on the beer industry with an estimated 7,400 jobs lost.
The industry has seen a further R14.2 billion in lost sales revenue and more than a R7.4 billion loss in taxes and excise duties.
“BASA is therefore calling on President Ramaphosa to consider the plight of craft brewers by not extending the blanket ban on alcohol beyond 15 January 2021.
“BASA proposes this be done through safe alternatives, such as the use of click-and-collect platforms to assist in ensuring the safety of consumers.”
Other proposals mooted by the association include:
The current evening curfew from 21h00 – 06h00 should remain in effect;
The 20h00 closing time for businesses should continue;
The ban on gatherings should continue

New Zealand: New Zealand Hops assessing hailstorm damage to crop
|
New Zealand Hops is hopeful the damage inflicted by a freak hailstorm at the end of last month will not leave brewers empty-handed this year, the Australian Brews News reported on January 1.
A Boxing Day hailstorm shredded the leaves off the bine on a number of farms in the Nelson area meaning the hops had no chance to keep growing and produce flowers.
NZ Hops chief executive Craig Orr says his organisation is still working out how the damage will affect the forecast crop yield but remains hopeful that brewers will get the bulk of what they need in 2021.
“It will be another fortnight before we can determine our forecast for total crop yield,” Orr told Brews News.
“While we’re yet to get a full picture on what production will look like it seems as if where we had surplus last year, this year there will be no surplus.”
The hardest hit varieties were Riwaka and Nelson Sauvin, which Orr said had been “heavily hammered”.
NZ Hops is a co-operative of 28 growers and a total of five growers, and six farms, were hit by the hailstorm, which produced hailstones the size of large grapes.
