USA, CA: Ghost Town Brewing planning second location in Oakland
|
In a time when many businesses are struggling, West Oakland’s Ghost Town Brewing is expanding. Last month, the craft brewery acquired a 10-year lease to property at 3506 MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland’s Laurel District, where they aim to open a taphouse and beer garden by the end of February. The property is the former location of chef Ryan Farr’s Oakland outpost of 4505 Burgers & BBQ, which operated on the spot for one year before the closure. Farr still owns the space, the Berkeleyside reported on January 13.
“They were one of our customers,” said Ryan Nosek, co-owner and co-founder of Ghost Town Brewing, “and now they’re our landlords.”
Farr shuttered 4505 at the end of July due to the loss of business during the pandemic, but had hoped to reopen the restaurant in spring 2021, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Nosek is unsure why Farr decided not to reopen in the space, but is happy for the opportunity to expand and extend his own business.
“We always loved that space, thought it was a cool neighborhood, and it’s got a good beer garden vibe,” Nosek said. “And it’s completely outdoors, which bodes well for the pandemic, but even post-pandemic.”

USA, TX: D.G. Yuengling & Son to begin production of their Traditional Amber Lager in Texas by fall

The oldest brewing company in America has decided to begin production of their Traditional Amber Lager in Texas by fall 2021.
According to the Dallas Morning News, on Jan. 14, Pennsylvania brewery D.G. Yuengling & Son announced that by fall 2021 they will be producing and selling Yuengling in Texas.
The beer will be brewed at the Molson Coors facility in Fort Worth. Molson Coors partnered with D.G. Yuengling & Son last September in hopes of spreading the craft beer across the nation. They decided to go with Texas first.
“It’s a huge market; it’s a big beer-drinking state,” says Wendy Yuengling, chief administrative officer and sixth-generation family member.
Yuengling is already sold in produced in more than 20 states throughout the east coast. This will be their first chance of expanding west.
“Texas is bigger than our entire north region and the last eight states that we’ve launched, combined,” says Jen Yuengling, vice president of operations and the oldest of four sixth-generation Yuengling sisters.
Yuengling is the oldest brewing company in the nation. The company started in 1829 and is still brewing beer in their original location in Pottsville, PA.

Japan: Suntory unveils business strategy for 2021
|
In Japan, the beer market is expected to have shrunk around 9% from the previous year in volume, according to Suntory. Declines are expected to continue in 2021, albeit at a more moderate 3%, Suntory said in its recently released business strategy for 2021.
Suntory’s focus for this year is on quality and value for its three key brands, the company said.
Alcohol-free is a particular focus: sales volume for Suntory’s 0.0% ABV All-Free brand was 7.93 million cases in 2020 (up 8% year on year): a trajectory Suntory wants to continue in 2021. While well-established in Japan, the product has also launched in the US.
All-Free is a drink ‘combining modern technology with decades of brewing experience to create a crisp, light and refreshing beverage with zero calories and 0.00% alcohol, perfectly complementing an active and social lifestyle.’
The drink has been present in Japan since 2010, but relaunched in December with a new product and packaging. It also launched in the US in August.
Described as a ‘sparkling malt and hops beverage’, the drink uses Tennensui water (natural mineral water from Japanese forests) and natural ingredients, bypassing the fermentation process to create a specialty beer-like beverage.

South Africa: South African Breweries cancels further 2.5 bln rand investment following third local ban on alcohol sales
|
South African Breweries, part of Anheuser-Busch InBev, has cancelled a further 2.5 billion rand ($165 million) of investment earmarked for 2021 following a third local ban on alcohol sales in the country, it said on January 15.
SAB’s cancelled investments in South Africa in relation to the ban now total 5 billion rand. In August, the maker of Carling Black Label and Castle Lager beer cancelled 2.5 billion rand of planned expenditure following a second alcohol ban.
South Africa has banned alcohol sales as part of efforts to free up space in hospitals burdened with alcohol-related injuries for COVID-19 patients.
As a result, more than 165,000 people in South Africa have lost their jobs and about 30% of local breweries have been forced to shut their doors permanently.
“Given the material impact that this third ban on the sale of alcohol has on our business and the possibility of further bans, we have no choice but to halt these investments for the foreseeable future,” SAB’s Vice President of Finance, Richard Rivett-Carnac said in a statement.
The cancelled investments relate to upgrades to operating facilities, product innovation, operating systems as well as the installation of new equipment at selected plants, the brewer said.

Hungary: Heineken awarded HUF270 mln grant to support upgrade of Sopron brewery
|
Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó on January 12 awarded the local unit of Heineken a HUF 270 million grant to support a HUF 540 mln upgrade at its brewery in Sopron, the Budapest Business Journal reported.
Dutch-owned Heineken Hungária committed to preserve 465 workplaces and to buy 85% of its raw materials from local producers, Szijjártó said.
The investment will boost efficiency and expand the brewer's product portfolio, he added.
Heineken Hungária CEO Geert Swaanenburg said the company had not laid off a single worker even though its catering sector orders had dried up because of the pandemic.
Heineken Hungária had revenue of HUF 63.9 billion in 2019, public records show.

Japan: New beer by Sapporo Breweries to hit shelves next month despite typo on its cans

A new Japanese beer will hit the shelves next month despite a misspelling on its cans as “lagar,” its maker Sapporo Breweries Ltd. has said, after the error set social media abuzz and drew consumer support, the Japan Times reported on January 14.
Many consumers shrugged off the major brewer’s mistake on the limited-edition cans instead of having printed the correct “lager.”
“Who cares? It’s too good to throw away,” one tweeted, while another, in a Twitter post, suggested, “Why not sell it as a ‘super limited’ misspelled edition?”
Buoyed by consumer support, Sapporo Breweries reversed its earlier decision and released a statement on January 13 saying it has decided to proceed with sales of the beer.
It has said the new beer uses the same traditional manufacturing methods as that of Kaitakushi Brewery, Japan’s first beer factory, which opened in 1876.The company caused a stir online last week after announcing a halt to sales of the product.
The beer was initially slated to go on sale on January 12. Sapporo Breweries said a last-minute inspection before shipping found the incorrect spelling on both the 350- and 500-milliliter versions.
While acknowledging the typo, it said, “There is no effect on the quality.”
