UK: Most brewers postponing annual beer price increases
|
Most brewers are postponing beer price increases until later in the year, The Morning Advertiser (MA) reported on January 27.
Previously, brewers have increased beer prices towards the start of the year, which has tended to be in line with inflation.
This year, The MA understands, Heineken will be increasing its prices on draught products from April with rises ranging from 2.8% to 4.5%.
Heineken UK on-trade director Stephen Watt said: “Throughout the pandemic, our priority has been to help pubs and bars through the most difficult trading period in generations and get them back on their feet, serve communities and be viable once again.
“It’s been a challenging time for the industry, but we have supported customers by absorbing costs related to restocking and maintaining workable cellars, investing in practical support and creating safe environments, while also offering a number of deferred or cancelled payments.
“With the dispensing of the vaccines, we anticipate pubs, bars and restaurants will be able to start to return to more normalised trading levels during the second quarter."
He added: “As part of our annual review of prices, we are therefore informing customers of our intention to increase prices on draught beer and cider.
“We acknowledge however, that in the early

Spain: Mahou San Miguel expands marketing agreement with AB InBev
|
The Mahou San Miguel brewery has extended the marketing agreement in Spain with the Belgian multinational AB InBev, one year after the start of the collaboration between the two companies. Therefore, starting from 1 March, the Spanish brewery will distribute the German brands Beck's, Spaten and Löwenbräu in the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, including them in its broad product portfolio, EFA News reported on January 26.
"Despite the situation we have experienced due to the pandemic, this first year of collaboration with AB InBev has been very fruitful,” says Peio Arbeloa, general manager of the Mahou San Miguel Business Unit Spain. "The incorporation of its reference brands has made a valuable contribution to our national business which, without doubt, is strengthened thanks to the extension of our agreement,” adds the manager.
Specifically, Mahou San Miguel will offer its customers a total of 10 references from Beck's, Spaten and Löwenbräu, which it will distribute in the hospitality channel, both bottled and in cask, and in the Food channel. With this new agreement, both companies confirm their intention to continue promoting the premium beer category in Spain, as well as to respond to the growing demand for international beers from consumers.

World: Asahi Super Dry named the best-selling beer at the world’s best bars
|
Asahi Super Dry has been named the best-selling beer at the world’s best bars, with Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Corona coming in at second and third, BrewsNews.com.au reported on January 29.
The recognition comes from leading global drinks journal Drinks International’s annual survey of the world’s top 100 bars, which asks them what brands are most in-demand at their venue.
This year’s results mark a hat-trick for Asahi Beverages, which has the top three beers in its Australian portfolio, following the acquisition of Carlton & United Breweries last year.
Carlton & United Breweries Head of International Brands Kym Bonollo said: “Asahi Beverages is home to some of the world’s most premium beers. We’re delighted that’s reflected in the annual Drinks International report, which surveys the best bars in 33 countries, from Maybe Sammy in Sydney to Dead Rabbit in New York and London’s Tayer + Elementary.
“Last year was hugely disruptive to hospitality around the globe. But the huge outpouring of support for the industry showed how much people love getting together, enjoying top service and drinking great beer. We’re glad our beers were enjoyed by so many last year and, as Australia’s bar scene returns, we’re seeing that Asahi Super Dry is the

South Africa: Small brewers calling on government to reopen sale of alcohol for off-site consumption
|
Small beer brewing companies are calling on government to reopen the sale of alcohol for off-site consumption in a bid to keep their businesses afloat, the Eyewitness News reported on January 25.
The liquor industry has reportedly lost more than 165,000 jobs since the start of the COVID-19 lockdown last march. Around 30% of local breweries have permanently shut their doors.
Several businesses that Eyewitness News spoke to said that they had struggled to settle their bills and maintain jobs since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the third ban on alcohol sales in December last year in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Julian Pienaar, owner of the Just Brewing Company in Boksburg, said that they could soon be out of work if the ban on liquor sales was not lifted soon.
"It is very difficult. We could probably not be working two weeks from now if they haven't lifted it."
Pienaar said that they had already downgraded their operations.
"We used to run a little restaurant from here. We had 11 people and we had to unfortunately let 8 people go. We supported them as much as we could to the end of May."
Pienaar has called on government to also permit the online trade

UK: Alcohol-free Guinness to be rolled out again in the next few months
|
Alcohol-free Guinness is to be rolled out again - and UK consumers may not have long to wait, the Evening Standard reported on January 28.
Diageo’s UK managing director, Dayalan Nayager, told the Standard that the company is looking to re-launch Guinness 0.0 in the next few months as it has made sure that the "production process is tighter”.
The FTSE 100 drinks giant owns the Irish stout brand. After four years of development, and after being described as Guinness’ “biggest innovation in decades”, the zero percent brew made headlines when it was pulled just weeks after its launch in the UK in October last year, and has not been on sale since.
Diageo voluntarily recalled all cans saying there had been “a microbiological contamination which may make some cans unsafe to consume”, and the Food Standards Agency said the “product may contain mould”. There were no reports of anyone getting sick as a result of drinking the brew.
Nagayer said: “If you look at Guinness 0.0, we conducted a voluntary product recall as the quality of some of the initial batches that we launched was not up to the standards that we expect, or that we think our consumers expect.
“So we

South Africa: Barley farmers bracing for a tough market ahead
|
South African barley farmers are bracing for a tough market ahead as demand for the grain used to make beer falls and stockpiles grow after a ban on the sale of alcohol was reinstated as the country battles a surge in COVID-19 cases, Reuters reported on January 27.
The government in December enforced its third ban on alcohol sales since the outbreak of the virus to alleviate pressure on strained healthcare facilities after a rise in infections.
Unutilised stocks of barley, which is mainly planted for malting purpose in South Africa, stood at around 719,307 tonnes by December, 49% higher than a year ago, according to data from the South African Grain Information Service.
Farmers say the ban is further hurting a sector still reeling from effects of drought conditions in 2019.
“The biggest impact will be on next year’s mandate to supply malt barley for the industry,” said Jose De Kock, chairman of Barley Industry Committee, referencing to the 2021/22 season where plantings are due to start in around April.
“With the carry-over that is already in the pipeline they are going to limit the mandate for next year, that is the fear,” he added.
Farmers could plant other crops, but De Kock said this

India: United Spirits sees Q3 net profit rise by 20.82%
|
Diageo-controlled liquor maker United Spirits Ltd (USL) on January 27 reported a 20.82% rise in consolidated net profit at ₹280.3 crore for the third quarter ended December 2020. The company's board, on the same day, also approved the succession plan to appoint Hina Nagarajan as the Chief Executive Officer - Designate of the company from April 1.
USL had posted a net profit of ₹232 crore in the 2019 December quarter.
The company's revenues from operations jumped 7.65% to ₹8,410.3 crore in the latest December quarter. In the year-ago period, the same stood at ₹7,812.3 crore, according to a regulatory filing.
However, total expenses climbed to ₹8,074.5 crore in the third quarter of the current fiscal as against ₹7,503.3 crore in the same period a year ago. "Operational resilience, contextual marketing with focus on in-home occasions and renovation of our core brands supported the top-line recovery," Diageo India MD & CEO Anand Kripalu said.
The third quarter reflects improving consumer sentiment over previous quarters, notwithstanding on-premise footfalls still being low, the route to market change in Andhra Pradesh and taxation led price hikes post COVID-19, he added.
Its Prestige and above segment net sales moderately declined in the latest December quarter, albeit lapping strong normal
