World: Online beer ordering likely to stay after coronavirus restrictions ease – AB InBev CEO
|
Beer drinkers are likely to retain pandemic habits of ordering online to drink at home even as coronavirus restrictions ease, the chief executive of the world’s largest brewer said on February 25, Reuters reported.
The switch in consumption was nowhere more apparent than in Brazil, where the firm’s Ze Delivery platform took 27 million orders last year, up from 1.5 million in 2019.
Carlos Brito, the chief executive of Anheuser-Busch InBev, acknowledged many consumers were desperate to return to bars, sports events and festivals, but believed consumption would not be exactly the same as before.
“The trend, as we’re seeing in China, is that consumers will go back to a lot of the old habits, but I think the home will remain more of a hub than it was before,” he told Reuters in an interview.
“The convenience of having things digitally ordered to your home will to a large part remain,” he said.
The maker of Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona ended 2020 with what Brito described as “strong momentum”. Profit slipped in the fourth quarter, but the company sold 1.8% more beer. Growth was sharpest in Brazil, its second largest market.
Brito said AB InBev’s business had suffered most from severe lockdowns, such as

South Africa: South African alcohol industry gravely concerned by excise tax increase
|
The South African alcohol industry says it's gravely concerned that excise tax will be increased by 8%, which will exceed the targeted excise duties for wine, beer and spirits set by Treasury itself, at 11, 23 and 36% respectively, Bizcommunity.com reported on February 251.
The Beer Association of South Africa (Basa) – comprising the Craft Brewers Association, Heineken South Africa and South African Breweries – calls the announcement by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni "a kick in the teeth for everybody in the beer value chain, and especially small craft brewers whose businesses have been shattered by 19 weeks of restricted trade".
"Minister Mboweni’s announcement to increase excise taxes by 8% for the forthcoming financial year will be truly detrimental to our efforts to save jobs and livelihoods within the beer industry. This outrageous increase, set at 3.8% above inflation, will destroy the few businesses left standing. It is absolutely abhorrent that a government can choose to shut down an entire industry, repeatedly, with no prior communication to businesses within the sector and with no relief measures in place to soften the blow to jobs and livelihoods," says Basa.
Kurt Moore, CEO of the South African Liquor Brandowners Association (Salba), says, “With thousands of

UK: Conservative MPs calling for a reduction in the tax paid on beer
|
A group of UK’s Conservative MPs is calling for a reduction in the tax paid on beer in next week's Budget, Yahoo Finance reported on February 26.
They have written to Chancellor Rishi Sunak arguing a cut in beer duty would support pubs which are struggling to survive the "devastating" impact of the pandemic.
They called for a "significant" cut over the course of this Parliament.
However the charity Alcohol Change UK said the costs to society of drinking "far outweighs" the tax paid on it.
The MPs' letter, co-ordinated by Durham North West MP Richard Holden, warned that some pubs, many of them "long-standing community assets" could close without further help and that there would be a knock-on effect on breweries.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has already called for an extension to the VAT cut and business rates holiday that have supported businesses, including pubs, through the last year.
But BBPA chief executive Emma McClarkin said a beer duty cut would "allow pubs to survive and thrive in the future".
"Pubs are the heart of our communities and a vital part of the UK economy, with a presence in just about every city, town and village across the country," she said.
"Amid this crisis

Tanzania: Serengeti Breweries introduces Guinness Smooth
|
In a bid to maintain strong market presence, Serengeti Breweries Limited has introduced Guinness Smooth, a new member to its growing family in the country’s northern cities of Moshi, Arusha Manyara, and Tanga, IPPmedia reported on February 26.
In a statement on February 25, the brewer invited key distributors, restaurant and bar owners to be among the first people to experience and sample the Guinness Smooth’s distinctive and refreshing taste.
SBL’s Innovation Manager, Bertha Vedastus said the latest addition to the Guinness family has a distinctly smooth and refreshing taste, with the perfect balance of flavours that are ideal for enjoyment while catching up with friends.
“The new tipple has all the refreshment hallmarks of a stout, with the fine character of Guinness. Crafted with Tanzanian consumers in mind, Guinness Smooth is a new expression of Guinness developed by Guinness master brewers, local and international, to deliver an exciting and stand-out beer that is perfect for casual social occasions. This smooth beer is produced in our Moshi brewery,” Vedastus said.
She further noted that the new beer brand brings a unique and world-class taste to residents of Moshi, Arusha Manyara, and Tanga following successful launch in Dar es Salaam at the end of

USA: Brewers Association releases its 2021 Beer Style Guidelines
|
The Brewers Association, the non-profit trade and lobbying organization for small and independent craft brewers in the US, has released their 2021 Beer Style Guidelines. These guidelines are a kind of brewer’s bible to how to classify their beers, KPCnews.com reported on February 25.
This is the book that beer judges and beer competitions use to award medals and awards for beers exemplifying the top quality for their specific traits per style of beer.
The BA Beer Style Guidelines dates back to 1979, when Brewers Association and Great American Beer Festival founder Charlie Papazian and celebrated beer journalist Michael Jackson created the first guidelines.
The goal of the guidelines is to create a range that brewers can use to define their beers, judges can use for knowing what to look for when judging and to create a record of historically and regionally accurate beer styles for both the promotion and preservation of both new and historically significant beers.
The 2021 guidelines now include 158 different styles of beer, including four new classifications with no style deletions. The four new categories are Kentucky Common Beer, New Zealand-Style Pale Ale, New Zealand-Style India Pale Ale and Belgian-Style Session Ale. One name change was also noted this

USA: Constellation Brands appoints executive vice president and managing director of its beer division

Constellation Brands has announced new and expanded responsibilities for two members of its executive management committee, effective 1 March 2021, ESM reported on February 25.
Executive vice president and chief marketing officer Jim Sabia has assumed the newly created role of executive vice president and managing director of the beer division.
Mallika Monteiro will take up additional responsibilities as executive vice president and chief growth, strategy and digital officer.
In his new role, Sabia will lead the beer division's operations, services, and commercial business functions.
The position of chief marketing officer will remain open in the near-term, the company said.
Given the importance of this role in Constellation Brands' long-term growth aspirations, the group plans to fill this position over time.
Monteiro will assume added responsibility for leading the company's media initiatives, including digital marketing, three-tier e-commerce, and Constellation Ventures, as part of the new role.
Constellation Ventures focuses on investing in early-stage start-ups in the beverage alcohol space and adjacent categories.
President and CEO of Constellation Brands, Bill Newlands, said that "it is critical that we continue to invest in broadening the knowledge, perspective, and capabilities of our leaders" in order for the group to achieve its long-term goals.

Canada: Foreign interest fuels Canada barley prices spike
|
A load of golden ripe barley is nearly as pricey as the precious metal itself, Globalnews.ca reported on February 24.
“This is the highest I’ve seen it in my whole farming career,” Sean Stanford, a grain farmer and director with Alberta Barley, said.
Southern Alberta is prime barley-growing territory and the energy-rich kernel has become a hot commodity.
Stanford said time last year, a bushel of barley was selling for C$4.80. Now, its bringing C$6.50 a bushel.
He said the spike in price is being driven by foreign interest.
“There is a high demand from China. Mostly because they are recovering from the African swine fever that hit China pretty hard over the last couple of years. So they are in recovery mode now replenishing their stocks of animals and (those animals) have taken up a ton of feed.”
He said that paired with ongoing trade disputes between China and Australia — another country that imports high levels of grain — has Canada well positioned to sell all types of feed grains for top dollar.
“The price of corn is up so that shorts the other crops so the price of feed wheat is also quite high in the area right now, it’s over C$8 a bushel
