Barley news Canada: Foreign interest fuels Canada barley prices spike
A load of golden ripe barley is nearly as pricey as the precious metal itself, Globalnews.ca reported on February 24.

“This is the highest I’ve seen it in my whole farming career,” Sean Stanford, a grain farmer and director with Alberta Barley, said.

Southern Alberta is prime barley-growing territory and the energy-rich kernel has become a hot commodity.

Stanford said time last year, a bushel of barley was selling for C$4.80. Now, its bringing C$6.50 a bushel.

He said the spike in price is being driven by foreign interest.

“There is a high demand from China. Mostly because they are recovering from the African swine fever that hit China pretty hard over the last couple of years. So they are in recovery mode now replenishing their stocks of animals and (those animals) have taken up a ton of feed.”

He said that paired with ongoing trade disputes between China and Australia — another country that imports high levels of grain — has Canada well positioned to sell all types of feed grains for top dollar.

“The price of corn is up so that shorts the other crops so the price of feed wheat is also quite high in the area right now, it’s over C$8 a bushel ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: 633 Brewing to open to the public on February 27
633 Brewing will be opening to the public on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 4-9 p.m. after 16 months of preparation and renovations, the Waynesboro Record Herald reported on February 24.

Located at 118 Walnut St. in Waynesboro, next to Montezuma’s restaurant, the craft beer establishment owned by Kevin Barrick and Heather Weeks will be serving up some original craft brews.

“We will have on draft an American ale, a brown ale, a hazy IPA and a Costa Rican cold coffee stout made from Brio Coffeehouse coffee,” Barrick said. “We are breaking in a lot of new equipment, and I’m really pleased with the four we are looking to put out there.”

The interior offers seating, a high-top bar, a photo wall documenting the history of Waynesboro, a stage area for live music and a view into their brew house from the main seating area.

“The installation of the garage door was kinda forced upon us. We wanted an open layout where we could be brewing on a Saturday afternoon and customers could see in, but we were told our brew house had to be totally closed in, but I didn’t want to make the space feel closed in,” Barrick said. “One day we were ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: January domestic tax paid beer shipments up 2.4%
The US Beer Institute published an unofficial estimate of domestic tax paid shipments by beer brewers for January 2021 on February 25.

The January 2021 estimate is 12,725,000 barrels, an increase of 2.4% vs. January 2020 removals of 12,423,000.

The February 2021 domestic tax paid estimate is scheduled to be released on March 24, 2021.

Brewery news USA, MI: Dirty Thumb Brewing Company to open in Port Huron after getting state and federal approval
Where once there were movie screens and dry-cleaning equipment in Port Huron will soon be home to something a little more bubbly, the Port Huron Times Herald reported on February 23.

Jeramie Albert plans to open Dirty Thumb Brewing Company, which will produce beer, wine and liquor, at the former Pine Grove Cleaners at 1615 Pine Grove Ave.

Albert, who works for the city's wastewater treatment plant, has brewed beer on and off for about 13 years and opening a brewery has been “a pipe dream for quite a while.”

“Still young enough to take a risk I guess,” Albert said.

According to St. Clair County property records, the building was purchased in June 2019 for $50,000 from Northstar Bank.

Albert said he probably looked at dozens of buildings but chose the Pine Grove Avenue location because he got a good deal on it and it’s a high traffic area.

He’s currently working to transform the space with family and friends, with one family member coming up with the name. The business is in the Thumb of Michigan and they’re getting their hands dirty to offer the working person’s beer, Albert said.

“It just kind of stuck,” he said.

Albert received local approval for the tasting room in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: DisBatch Brewing Company coming to Macedon this year
Wayne County will soon have a new brewery, the Spectrum News reported on February 24.

DisBatch Brewing Company will be opening up on Canandaigua Road in Macedon.

It will be the first brewery in Wayne County to brew in-house.

The opening date has not yet been announced.

Brewery news USA, NC: Hoptown Brewing Co. to open its doors in Mooresville after St. Patrick’s Day
Hoptown Brewing Co. will soon open its doors in Mooresville, and the owners are already looking to bring the concept to another city, the Charlotte Observer reported on February 24.

Scott Plemmons, who is opening the brewery with his wife, Sandy Plemmons, said the new spot will be the first of at least three Hoptown locations, with the plan to bring the neighborhood brewery model to underserved areas that aren’t as brewery-dense as Charlotte.

“We don’t see ourselves going into larger metropolitan areas,” Plemmons said. “We like to be the bedroom town type of brewery that would be able to pull from a large city but also support the local community. Our model is more about local.” While Mooresville’s location will be the first Hoptown, it will not be Plemmons’ first brewery.

After years of homebrewing, Plemmons started Hootenanny Brewing Co. from his 12-acre farm in Mooresville, at first with the simple goal of supplying his wife’s yoga studio with beer. Word about the beer spread, though, and soon Hootenanny was doing tap takeovers at the local Lowes Foods and on draft at places like Ultimate Ales, The Kilted Buffalo and Sky Mountain Coffee.

Plemmons kept hearing the same question: “When are you going ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Oak Island’s first brewpub Solar Brewing Co. eyeing summer opening
Oak Island’s first brewpub, Solar Brewing Co., is planning to open next to Shagger Jacks sometime between June and August with a 50-person seating capacity, 16 taps, and pizza offerings, the Port City Daily reported on February 25.

When former homebrewer Michael Bartlett was studying for his brewing and distillation technology certificate at a trade school near Detroit, his marketing teacher once told him to avoid any hesitation of starting a brewery because of what appeared to be a tapped-out craft beer market.

Sure, there were breweries popping up throughout the country at a record rate, but it was nothing new when compared to the country’s total population. As far back as the 1870s, there was one brewery per 9,334 people in the U.S., according to data from the Brewers Association and U.S. Census Bureau. In 2019 — the last year of data published by the Brewers Association — 8,386 breweries operated in the U.S. Although the number may seem staggering, the ratio amounts to one brewery per 39,161 people.

“To match that today, we’d have to have 39,000 breweries,” Bartlett said. “We’re not even close to that today.”

A reason why so many breweries can thrive in today’s beer market is simple: Many ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Good News Brewing Co. to open its third location in Augusta potentially in April
This spring, Good News Brewing Co., which has a location in O’Fallon, Missouri, and another in Defiance, is opening up a third location at 5521 Water St. in Augusta, potentially in April, in the space formerly known as Augusta Brew Haus. Guests will be able to enjoy wood-fired oven eats and brews made on site in the renovated indoor space, on the covered patio or at the shipping container bar outside, the Sauce Magazine reported on February 25.

Like the other locations, Good News Brewing Augusta will have a wood-fired pizza oven, but the team plans to use it for creative dishes beyond a basic pie unique to this location, including specials like flatbreads with smoked meats, as well as a variety of other wood-fired dishes like smoked wings, brisket tacos, pineapple-jalapeno pork tacos and smoked sausage.

Co-founders and co-owners Dan Tripp and Matt Fair started experimenting with home brewing together in 2014. Slowly, they expanded their operation and began to host a brewing party once a week for friends and family. “The idea was just to gather with people, make beer, eat pizza and share good news,” said Tripp. As these get-togethers grew, Tripp and Fair decided to turn their ...More info on site

Whisky news USA, MA: Tree House Brewing Co. requests permission to build a farmer-distillery on its Charlton property
Tree House Brewing Co., Inc., a Charlton craft beer producer with a large cult following, has requested permission from the town to build a farmer-distillery on its Charlton property, the Worcester Business Journal reported on February 25.

Specifically, according to public documents, the brewer is asking to remove 10,819 square feet of its warehouse, which is a Section 19C farmer-brewery, to construct a Section 19E farmer-distillery. The build-out is expected to cost $1.6 million, according to an alteration of premises amendment filed with the ABCC.

Tree House is asking for a permit to sell the spirits both for on-site consumption and to go, along with the company’s beer.

Tree House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tree House is the second local brewer to recently announce plans to expand into liquor production and sales. At the end of December, Wormtown Brewery in Worcester said it was in the preliminary stages of attempting to add distillery to their operations, an idea long in the works but which was stalled by the coronavirus pandemic.

Brewery news USA: Brewers Association releases its 2021 Beer Style Guidelines
The Brewers Association, the non-profit trade and lobbying organization for small and independent craft brewers in the US, has released their 2021 Beer Style Guidelines. These guidelines are a kind of brewer’s bible to how to classify their beers, KPCnews.com reported on February 25.

This is the book that beer judges and beer competitions use to award medals and awards for beers exemplifying the top quality for their specific traits per style of beer.

The BA Beer Style Guidelines dates back to 1979, when Brewers Association and Great American Beer Festival founder Charlie Papazian and celebrated beer journalist Michael Jackson created the first guidelines.

The goal of the guidelines is to create a range that brewers can use to define their beers, judges can use for knowing what to look for when judging and to create a record of historically and regionally accurate beer styles for both the promotion and preservation of both new and historically significant beers.

The 2021 guidelines now include 158 different styles of beer, including four new classifications with no style deletions. The four new categories are Kentucky Common Beer, New Zealand-Style Pale Ale, New Zealand-Style India Pale Ale and Belgian-Style Session Ale. One name change was also noted this ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands appoints executive vice president and managing director of its beer division
Constellation Brands has announced new and expanded responsibilities for two members of its executive management committee, effective 1 March 2021, ESM reported on February 25.

Executive vice president and chief marketing officer Jim Sabia has assumed the newly created role of executive vice president and managing director of the beer division.

Mallika Monteiro will take up additional responsibilities as executive vice president and chief growth, strategy and digital officer.

In his new role, Sabia will lead the beer division's operations, services, and commercial business functions.

The position of chief marketing officer will remain open in the near-term, the company said.

Given the importance of this role in Constellation Brands' long-term growth aspirations, the group plans to fill this position over time.

Monteiro will assume added responsibility for leading the company's media initiatives, including digital marketing, three-tier e-commerce, and Constellation Ventures, as part of the new role.

Constellation Ventures focuses on investing in early-stage start-ups in the beverage alcohol space and adjacent categories.

President and CEO of Constellation Brands, Bill Newlands, said that "it is critical that we continue to invest in broadening the knowledge, perspective, and capabilities of our leaders" in order for the group to achieve its long-term goals.

He added, "Mallika and Jim will continue to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Saucy Brew Works’ opening delayed
Saucy Brew Works’ planned opening in Detroit is being delayed, Cleveland.com reported on February 25.

Saucy had been planning to open its Motor City outpost Wednesday, March 3. The brewpub - which will have capacity for brewing – is located in a mixed-use community development downtown and close to Detroit’s sports venues.

The folks at Saucy are taking as light-hearted a look at the delay – attributed to permit issues out of their control – via Facebook:’

The brewery said it hopes to learn of a new opening date next week.

Saucy, which opened in the Hingetown part of Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood in 2017, has been on a steady expansion course. It is building a massive brewery-event center next to Topgolf in Independence, and it opened in the Pinecrest development in Orange Village last year. It also has a Columbus taproom and a presence in Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, where 14% of capacity - 2,720 spectators - are allowed under Covid restrictions.

Brewery news World: Online beer ordering likely to stay after coronavirus restrictions ease – AB InBev CEO
Beer drinkers are likely to retain pandemic habits of ordering online to drink at home even as coronavirus restrictions ease, the chief executive of the world’s largest brewer said on February 25, Reuters reported.

The switch in consumption was nowhere more apparent than in Brazil, where the firm’s Ze Delivery platform took 27 million orders last year, up from 1.5 million in 2019.

Carlos Brito, the chief executive of Anheuser-Busch InBev, acknowledged many consumers were desperate to return to bars, sports events and festivals, but believed consumption would not be exactly the same as before.

“The trend, as we’re seeing in China, is that consumers will go back to a lot of the old habits, but I think the home will remain more of a hub than it was before,” he told Reuters in an interview.

“The convenience of having things digitally ordered to your home will to a large part remain,” he said.

The maker of Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona ended 2020 with what Brito described as “strong momentum”. Profit slipped in the fourth quarter, but the company sold 1.8% more beer. Growth was sharpest in Brazil, its second largest market.

Brito said AB InBev’s business had suffered most from severe lockdowns, such as ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South African alcohol industry gravely concerned by excise tax increase
The South African alcohol industry says it's gravely concerned that excise tax will be increased by 8%, which will exceed the targeted excise duties for wine, beer and spirits set by Treasury itself, at 11, 23 and 36% respectively, Bizcommunity.com reported on February 251.

The Beer Association of South Africa (Basa) – comprising the Craft Brewers Association, Heineken South Africa and South African Breweries – calls the announcement by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni "a kick in the teeth for everybody in the beer value chain, and especially small craft brewers whose businesses have been shattered by 19 weeks of restricted trade".

"Minister Mboweni’s announcement to increase excise taxes by 8% for the forthcoming financial year will be truly detrimental to our efforts to save jobs and livelihoods within the beer industry. This outrageous increase, set at 3.8% above inflation, will destroy the few businesses left standing. It is absolutely abhorrent that a government can choose to shut down an entire industry, repeatedly, with no prior communication to businesses within the sector and with no relief measures in place to soften the blow to jobs and livelihoods," says Basa.

Kurt Moore, CEO of the South African Liquor Brandowners Association (Salba), says, “With thousands of ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Conservative MPs calling for a reduction in the tax paid on beer
A group of UK’s Conservative MPs is calling for a reduction in the tax paid on beer in next week's Budget, Yahoo Finance reported on February 26.

They have written to Chancellor Rishi Sunak arguing a cut in beer duty would support pubs which are struggling to survive the "devastating" impact of the pandemic.

They called for a "significant" cut over the course of this Parliament.

However the charity Alcohol Change UK said the costs to society of drinking "far outweighs" the tax paid on it.

The MPs' letter, co-ordinated by Durham North West MP Richard Holden, warned that some pubs, many of them "long-standing community assets" could close without further help and that there would be a knock-on effect on breweries.
