USA, OH: Two longtime friends launch Old Capitol Brewing in Chillicothe
|
And despite the pandemic, two longtime friends who started a business venture in the Central Ohio community of Chillicothe have gone from brewing craft beer in their garage to making their dream a reality with Old Capitol Brewing, the News 13 Orlando reported on February 26.
And despite the pandemic, they've gone from brewing craft beer in their garage to making their dream a reality with Old Capitol Brewing.
“We imagined that there'd be a lot of people walking in, you know, who have never experienced craft before, and we wanted to make it easy for them,” said Justin Park, the co-owner of Old Capitol Brewing.
Park said filling up another beer flight is just a labor of love, and after just weeks into his new venture, the risk has been well worth the reward.
“And of course going through our minds the entire time is, you know, how is this all going to be received? And the reception we got our first weekend was amazing,” said Park.
On this day, Park's business partner and longtime friend Seth Blewitt carefully adds hops, as the beer starts to boil, adding to more flavor and aroma. He calls that craft “El Hefe.”

Canada, QB: Quebec microbreweries now pumping out a wide range of zero-alcohol beers
|
Stéphane Duchesne likes to tell the story of one particular client at his Magasin Général de Castelnau, in Montreal's Villeray Borough, CBC.ca reported on February 27.
The client, whose elderly father would come over for dinner, liked to indulge in a few cold ones with his meal.
The son, not wanting his father to drink and then drive home, would pop into Duchesne's shop and load up on zero-alcohol beers, which contain less than 0.5 per cent alcohol.
"[The father] thinks he's drinking real beer. So he can drive back to Laval, no sweat, and the son can sleep soundly," recalled Duchesne.
Today's microbrew near-beer scene is far from what it used to be as recently as five or six years ago.
There were only a few options, likely produced by a major brewery, and they often tasted like insipid, uninspired attempts at beer.
That's not the case today. Duchesne has roughly 15 different types of zero-alcohol beer in the antique, wood-lined fridges in his shop. Quebec microbreweries are pumping out a wide range of zero-alcohol beers, ranging from stouts to IPAs to blondes.
"Before it was a sugary beer, they weren't able to put the hops in it. Today a [non-alcoholic] beer without hops is almost

France: Most wheat and barley crops remain in good condition
|
Most wheat and barley crops in France, the European Union's biggest grain producer, remain in good condition as they reach the end of winter, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on February 26.
An estimated 87 percent of French soft wheat crops were in good or excellent condition by Feb 22, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal crop report.
That was up from 86 percent a week earlier and well above a 64 percent score in the same week last year. For winter barley, 83 percent of crops were rated good/excellent, unchanged from a week earlier and up from a 66 percent score a year earlier.
The latest soft wheat and winter barley ratings were below scores of 96 percent and 94 percent respectively in FranceAgriMer's previous crop update at the end of November. But they suggest a limited immediate impact from freezing conditions in France this month. FranceAgriMer had interrupted its updates during the winter dormancy period for crops. It had been due to resume the cereal reports on February 26 but a technical issue delayed publication.
For spring barley, 20 percent of the expected area had been sown by Feb. 22, against 17 percent a week earlier and 28 percent a year

Ukraine: Wheat, corn, barley export prices rise after severe frosts
|
Ukrainian soft milling wheat export prices added $5 a tonne over the past week, supported by worries about spring crops conditions after severe frosts across the Black Sea region, APK-Inform agriculture consultancy said on March 1.
Night temperature fell to minus 25 degrees Celsius (-13 Fahrenheit) in most Ukrainian regions in mid-February, but weather forecasters have said a significant snow layer protected the crops.
Asking prices for Ukrainian-origin 12.5% protein wheat stood at $283 to $288 per tonne FOB Black Sea, the consultancy said in a report.
Lower quality 11.5% wheat was quoted between $281 and $287 per tonne, it said.
APK-Inform said export prices for Ukrainian corn added $2 a tonne to $260-$267 while barley prices have risen by $2-$3 a tonne to $256-$263 FOB Black Sea.
Ukraine, a major global grain exporter, has sold abroad 31.8 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2020/21 July-June season, 8.3 million tonnes less than in the same period a season earlier.
The volume includes 13.6 million tonnes of wheat, 3.96 million tonnes of barley and 13.7 million tonnes of corn.
Ukraine sold about 57 million tonnes of grain to foreign buyers in the 2019/20 season while the government has said exports could decline to 45.4 million tonnes

Greece & the Netherlands: Macedonian Thrace Brewery gets go-ahead to pursue Heineken in court
|
Macedonian Thrace Brewery (MTB) has been given the go-ahead to pursue Heineken for damages in relation to anti-competitive practices and market abuse by its Greek subsidiary, the Globe Newswire reported on February 26.
The Amsterdam Court of Appeal has ruled that MTB can bring a legal claim in the Dutch courts against not only Heineken but also Athenian Brewery, its Greek operating company.
MTB’s lawsuit against Heineken follows a ruling by the Hellenic Competition Commission (HCC) that found Athenian Brewery had abused its dominant position in the Greek market for more than 16 years. Athenian was fined a record €31.5 million.
MTB, an independently owned Greek brewer, filed a claim for damages against Heineken in the Netherlands in 2017. It argued that the case should be heard in the Dutch courts because Athenian Brewery’s illegal activities had been carried out under the supervision and with the knowledge of executives at Heineken’s headquarters.
Demetri Chriss, Director of Business Development at MTB, said: “Heineken’s attempt to distance itself from the bad behaviour of its Greek operating company, Athenian Brewery, has failed. Heineken and Athenian Brewery will now both be held accountable in the Netherlands for the market abuse that was documented so powerfully in the HCC’s

South Korea: Jeju Beer Co. gets approval to list on Korea’s Exchange
|
Jeju Beer Co. is set to go public in the first half of this year after securing Korea Exchange's approval of its preliminary listing application filed last November, EconoTimes reported on February 27.
Despite being unable to fulfil Kosdaq's market listing requirements, Jeju Beer received approval on Feb. 25 due to the so-called "Tesla policy," which allows companies with strong growth potential, even those in the red, to obtain special listing approval.
Tesla Motors was in a deficit when it went public, going on to achieve monumental success.
To qualify for the policy, a company should have over 30 billion won in market capitalization and more than 10 billion won in revenue.
Also qualified are companies with over 3 billion won in sales and an average growth rate of 20 percent in the last two years.
South Korea’s leading craft beer maker far exceeds the Tesla policy requirements.
Last year, Jeju Beer posted 32 billion won in sales, more than double its 2019 revenue of 13 billion won.
Jeju Beer’s enterprise value is estimated to be around 100 billion won based on September's valuation from its 14 billion won pre-IPO.
The company plans to sell 8.37 million shares or 15 percent of its total holdings.
Jeju Beer, which seeks

UK: Scottish National Party wows to keep up pressure on reaching an agreement with the US to abolish single malt whisky tariffs
|
A Scottish National Party (SNP) Member of Parliament has vowed to keep up the pressure on the UK Government to work with US counterparts in abolishing single malt whisky tariffs, The National reported on February 27.
Carol Monaghan, MP for Glasgow North West, has urged the UK Government to continue efforts to remove the damaging tariffs.
In October 2019 the Trump administration approved tariffs of 25% on single malt imports into the US. The industry had enjoyed a zero-tariff import agreement for 25 years.
These were the result of a long-standing aviation industry dispute between the US and the EU, primarily concerning subsidies for Boeing and Airbus. In October 2019, the World Trade Organization ruled that the US could impose tariffs of £6.1 billion on goods imported from the EU.
Scotland’s whisky industry was targetted along with other goods of importance to Scotland’s economy – such as cashmere clothing.
According to data published by The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), the 2020 export value of Scotch fell by £1.1 bln from the 2019 value. The SWA ascribes these export figures – the lowest in a decade – to combined effects of US tariffs and impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Exports to the US fell by 32%

Italy: Peroni introduces new non-alcoholic Nastro Azurro Zero
|
Italian brewing giant Peroni has expanded its Nastro Azurro range to include a new non-alcoholic premium beer, Nastro Azurro Zero, ESM reported on February 26.
It preserves the unmistakable taste of Nastro Azurro, which is dry and refreshing with a delicate bitter note imparted by fine aromatic hops.
Nastro Azurro is one of the most popular exports among Italian beer brands, the company added.
The distinctive ingredient in the product is Mais Nostrano (Nostrano Corn), an indigenous variety of corn grown in Italy, which gives Nastro Azurro its unique, balanced and recognisable taste.
The fermentation process is carried out at a higher temperature (22-23°C) and using a special yeast strain that ferments only simple sugars, producing zero alcohol.
The zero alcohol beer targets consumers who want to enjoy the unique, dry and refreshing taste of Nastro Azurro even when they cannot drink alcohol.
Nastro Azurro Zero, produced at Birra Peroni's Bari plant in Italy, is available in supermarkets and the HoReCa channel in Italy, in a modern, attractive and distinctive packaging.

South Africa: AB InBev sees significant move to more affordable beer brands
|
Carling Black Label benefited from a shift to more affordable booze brands last year, according to the latest AB InBev results.
The world's largest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev, took a big hit in 2020 due to South Africa's various alcohol bans.
While overall booze sales dropped significantly, the brewer says there was a significant move to more affordable beer brands.
As a result, Carling Black Label grew its market share significantly last year, according to Business Insider SA.
Business Insider SA editor Helena Wasserman says price-conscious drinkers took advantage of Black Label's 750ml returnable “quart” bottles.
