UK & USA: US suspends single malt Scotch whisky import tariffs for four months
|
It’s been a day of good news for the Scotch whisky industry, Forbes reported on March 3.
Following the announcement that the U.K. government wouldn’t raise taxes on alcohol, the U.S. has announced that it is suspending tariffs for four months on a number of goods produced in the U.K., including single malt Scotch whisky.
The Scotch whisky industry had lost £500 million ($700 million) in business from the tariffs and exports had plunged to a 10-year low, so understandably this is a big relief for the industry.
The tariffs, which had also affected many other products including cheese and cashmere, stem from a long-running WTO case around planes that evolved under the Trump administration to a tariff war that affected hundreds of goods.
Scotch Whisky Association CEO Karen Betts is understandably quite thrilled:
“This is fabulous news, and our industry is delighted. The tariff on Single Malt Scotch Whisky exports to the US has been doing real damage to Scotch Whisky in the sixteen months it has been in place, with exports to the US falling by 35%, costing companies over half a billion pounds.
“So today, everyone in our industry – from small companies to large – is breathing a sigh of relief.

USA, OR: Deschutes Brewery acquires Bend’s Boneyard Beer
|
Boneyard Beer, one of Bend’s scrappy upstart beer makers, has been acquired by crosstown rival Deschutes Brewery. The deal is expected to help Boneyard expand its capacity to can beer, a process that proved challenging during the pandemic, Oregonlive.com reported on March 4.
Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed because both companies are privately held, said Gary Fish, founder of Deschutes Brewery Inc. Boneyard Brewery owner Tony Lawrence will retain ownership of the Boneyard pub on Division Street in Bend.
While both companies compete in the craft beer market and both are based in Bend, the similarities end there. Deschutes Brewery is considered an old hand in the craft brew market, established in 1988. It remains among the 10 largest craft brewers in the country by sales volume. Its label and image conjures up bucolic scenes of pure mountains and rivers. Boneyard Beer, founded in 2010, is more skull and crossbones, a brash upstart perhaps best known for its RPM IPA with a lineup that also includes Skunkape, Hop a Wheelie and Notorious IPA.

A premier East Bay brewery decorated with 45 medals awarded from top national and regional beer competitions (2015 – 2020), Gilman Brewing Company keeps its eye on the long-game with expansion plans set for early 2021. Gilman Brewing’s flagship production brewery and taproom in West Berkeley immediately increases its footprint to 13,800 square feet (an expansion of 5,000 square feet) while the official opening of their third location in downtown Pleasanton (706 Main Street) is set for March 2021. USA, NV: Shoe Tree Brewing adding second location in Minden
|
Shoe Tree Brewing has announced the addition of a second location in Minden. Owners say they plan to open sometime in April, they will serve craft beers on site, as well as cans and growlers to go. The new location will have a small brewing system and will be located in the Ironwood Shopping Center, The Record-Courier reported on March 4.
“We are very excited to get open, create jobs and start brewing world class craft beer for the Carson Valley,” said Shoe Tree Minden Brew Master Ryan Bauer.
The brewery, which first opened its doors in 2017, is known for their award-winning beers and raising money for charities and individuals who need help in the community.
“We will continue our efforts to give back to our community and look forward to working with local charities and causes in the Carson Valley,” said owners Jeff and Paul Young.
Shoe Tree Brewing Company received approval of a permit last year to go into the Ironwood Center.
Center owner Ben Johnson said the brewery will help his business.
“We wanted to bring something low key and fun to Carson Valley,” he said. “This makes the other businesses in Ironwood Center better.”

World: Kirin Holdings on watch list over business ties to Myanmar’s military
|
The Norwegian central bank said on March 3 it had put Japan’s Kirin Holdings on a watch list for possible exclusion from its $1.3 trillion sovereign wealth fund over the beverage giant’s business ties to Myanmar’s military.
Kirin on Feb. 5 said it would end its partnership with Myanma Economic Holdings Public Company Limited (MEHPCL), a company run by Myanmar’s army, after a military coup deposed the democratically elected government.
As part of its decision on whether to maintain its ownership in Kirin, the Norwegian fund will monitor the implementation of the company’s plan to end the ties, Norway’s central bank said in a statement.
Kirin’s decision effectively scraps the Myanmar Brewery joint venture, in which the Japanese firm’s controlling stake was valued at up to $1.7 billion, although Kirin also said it still wanted to keep selling beer in Myanmar.
Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), which manages the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, held a 1.29% stake in Kirin Holdings at the end of 2020 with a value of $277.1 million.
“We remain focused on urgently implementing the termination of our joint-venture partnership with MEHPCL,” Kirin said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

New Zealand: Production of beer under 1.15% alc. by vol. increases 105%
|
The latest release of alcohol available for consumption data from Stats NZ shows beer under 1.15% alc. by vol. produced for the year ending December 2020 increased 105%. This confirms that New Zealanders are getting in behind the no-alcohol category and following international trends in the beer market, Dylan Firth, Executive Director of the Brewers Association of New Zealand, was quoted as saying by Voxy on March 2.
"Thanks to the investment in the low/no alcohol beer category from major brewers, consumers are becoming more accepting and familiar of the low/no-beer as a quality product," said Firth.
"However, within the positive trend of consumers choosing innovative products, the brewing sector has been hit by the ongoing changes to alert levels,” he added.
"Overall, beer available for consumption was down (-1.4%), where both spirits (+5.2%) and wine (+4.3%) were up. This reflects the continued return to level 3 in Auckland and March 2020 lockdown impacts on the brewing sector. Unlike spirits and wine, beer consumption in most cases makes up a larger proportion of sales in hospitality environments vs wine and spirits," said Firth.

Japan: Japanese brewers to display alcohol content of their products in grams

Japanese brewers are preparing to display alcoholic content in their drinks in grams as the government is set to ask the liquor industry to display how much alcohol is actually contained in products in addition to the "alcohol by volume" (ABV) shown on labels, The Mainichi reported on March 3.
The request is part of the government's basic plan for promoting measures against alcohol-related health problems, designed to prevent alcohol addictions and other adverse effects of drinking. The government will obtain Cabinet approval for the move in the near future.
Under legislation related to Japan's Liquor Tax Act, manufacturers are required to display ABV, or the percentages of alcohol, on their product containers. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, meanwhile, has set the reference standard for the daily alcohol intake that could raise the risk of people developing lifestyle-related diseases at 40 grams or more for men and 20 grams or more for women.
The amount of alcohol in a 500-milliliter can of beer with 5% ABV translates to 20 grams, but Japan's health care and other industries have pointed out that the current method of displaying the level of alcohol with percentages alone makes it difficult for consumers to understand exactly

Thailand: Small craft brewers find virus rules hard to swallow

Small craft-beer companies in Thailand already grappling with onerous regulations have faced another blow in recent months from measures to curb the spread of the virus that have robbed them of vital sales channels, the Nikkei Asia reported on March 4.
Protesters in early February emptied out kegs of draft beer on the street outside the Public Health Ministry. A ban on alcohol sales in bars and restaurants imposed the previous month in response to a surge in coronavirus cases was forcing brewers to dispose of unpasteurized brews with a limited shelf life and no buyers.
That came on top of strict regulations that make the industry inhospitable for upstarts seeking to challenge the duopoly of Thai Beverage and Boon Rawd Brewery, the companies behind the Chang and Singha brands, respectively.
During the first wave of the outbreak in April of last year, the government barred the sale of alcohol not only in restaurants, but also via retail, in an effort to discourage prolonged gatherings that could spread the virus.
But in contrast, the second wave that began late last year started with a cluster of cases linked to a seafood market near Bangkok.
