|
Mexico: Beer trade surplus falls by 118 mln tonnes last year
|
Although beer remained Mexico’s main agri-food export product last year, representing 22% of agribusiness exports, the trade surplus was reduced by 118 million dollars to 4.645 million dollars, the Explica reported on March 7.
Karla Siqueiros, director of Cerveceros de México, reminds of the impact of stopping completely the industry in April and May, when the Mexican government decreed a health emergency due to COVID-19 that suspended non-essential activities.
She also pointed out the “dry law” that certain states still maintain. “For an industry like us, who work 365 days a year, having been closed for 60 days was a strong impact on the numbers. And added to the fact that it was not considered an essential industry, we subsequently faced the challenges of the dry laws,” she said.
The numbers for the beer industry come in a context in which Mexico’s economy contracted 8.2% in 2020 and the pandemic has left almost 200,000 deaths and 2.1 million cases of COVID-19.
“The main challenge we have is to overcome the pandemic and then of course we will face a generally complex economic outlook,” said Manuel Cedillo, director of Economic Studies at Cerveceros de México.
Beer producers have also faced the closure of businesses such as

UK: AB InBev to make 615 mln extra pints of beer at its Preston facility
|
Lager giant Budweiser is set to make 615 million extra pints of beer every year at its brewery near Preston (Lancashire, northern England) following a £45million investment in the site, the Accrington Observer reported on March 7.
The investment was announced by Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I, a subsidiary of AB InBev, last week as part of its wider investment plans across the country.
A total of £115million is being pumped into its UK sites in what it says will 'drive economy prosperity across the UK' and 'increase capacity and efficiency'.
In Lancashire, the Salmesbury Brewery will see a new canning line installed for new sustainable plastic ring-free cans.
It will also see modifications to its brewing, utilities and logistics workings in order to increase brewing capacity.
All in all, this will increase brewing capacity by two million hectolitres - something Budweiser says is around 350million extra litres of beer when fully operational.
This is the equivalent of around 615.9million extra pints of alcohol a year.
As well as Budweiser, the Samlesbury brewery brews Stella Artois, Brahma, Bass and Boddingtons.

Japan: Kirin Brewery to expand its home-delivery beer subscription service
|
Kirin Brewery Co. said on March 8 it will expand its home-delivery beer subscription service in May amid growing demand for its alcohol products at home in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Kyodo News Plus reported.
Under the service named "Home Tap," Kirin will deliver bottles of draft beer for home beer dispenses to subscribers twice a month, allowing them to select their favorite beers in one-litre plastic bottles from a list that includes Kirin's prime beer "Ichiban Shibori Premium" and craft beer from Brooklyn Brewery in New York, with whom Kirin has a capital and business tie up.
The price for a four-liter monthly subscription starts from 8,250 yen ($76) and eight litres from 12,430 yen. A beer dispenser, which keeps the beer cold and creates a creamy head, is also provided to subscribers, it said.
Kirin initially launched the home-delivery subscription service on a trial basis in 2017. Now that it has secured the production capability to manufacture its own dispensers it has decided to expand the service nationwide aside from the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa and some other islands.
Kirin Brewery President Takayuki Fuse said at the launch event in Tokyo that the company aims to gain 100,000

France: Malting barley exports outside the EU the largest for February since 2014/15
|
France’s February barley exports outside the EU included 152,000 tonnes of feed barley - all to China - and 61,000 tonnes of malting barley, representing the largest malting barley loadings for a February since 2014/15, the Refinitiv data showed last week.
French barley exports to China fell back to 170,000 tonnes, less than half the season's high seen in January.
Total grain shipments by sea to all destinations from French ports - also including maize, waxy maize and durum wheat - reached 1.14 million tonnes in February, in line with January.
The Refinitiv data, based on shipping data from various sources, can be revised subsequently and can also differ from later customs figures due to when ships are counted as leaving France.

Ukraine: Barley export prices rise to an all-time high
|
Ukrainian barley export prices have risen to an all-time high supported by demand from China and expected export restrictions in Russia, APK-Inform agriculture consultancy said on March 3.
Barley bid export prices rose to $243-$249 per tonne CPT (carriage paid for) Black Sea, the consultancy said in a report. “Strong demand from China continues to play a key role. In July-January 2020-2021 season, China has already imported more than 3 times more Ukrainian barley than in the entire previous season,” APK-Inform said.
It also mentioned the Russian government’s formula-based export tax system for wheat, corn and barley that is designed to help combat domestic food price inflation. Ukraine, a major barley exporter, harvested 7.6 million tonnes of barley in 2020 and the government had expected exports could total 3.8 million tonnes in the 2020-21 July-June season.
|
Australia & Saudi Arabia: Australia seen as major barley supplier to Saudi tender
|
Australian barley is once again likely to be the volume supplier of 11, 60,000-tonne cargoes awarded this week in the latest Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) tender, the Grain Central reported on March 9.
Western Australia’s CBH Grain has clinched two of the three cargoes for delivery to Gulf ports where, compared with delivery to Red Sea ports, Australian cargoes benefit from a relatively lower freight differential than cargoes shipped from the Black Sea.
Viterra has won four of the eight cargoes to go into Red Sea ports, and Viterra’s South Australian terminals are widely tipped to be the supplier of those.
Suppliers Aston, Holbud, LLC Trade and Solaris will each supply a Red Sea cargo, and Holbud also won a cargo into the Gulf; additional cargoes of Australian barley may be sold fob to supply one or more of those.
The average price per tonne of barley was US$279.77 cost and freight, or AU$366.10, and all cargoes are for second-half April and May arrival.
Thomas Elder Markets manager commodity market insights Andrew Whitelaw said a large proportion of the tender was likely to originate from Australia.
“It’s the third tender in a row where Australia has won substantial volumes,” Mr Whitelaw said in his Market Morsel
