Japan & USA: Sapporo Holdings planning a brewery in the US
|
Sapporo Holdings Ltd. is planning to set up a brewery in the U.S. by the end of 2024, as the top-selling Japanese beer in the American market seeks to expand its market share and cut costs, Bloomberg reported on March 11.
“I would like to have a production base on the West Coast,” Hiroyuki Nose, Sapporo Breweries’ vice president of marketing, said in an interview. “We make and import most of it from Canada and there are logistical costs. This is a challenge for us.”
The Tokyo-based beverage maker hasn’t been able to scale up beer brewing in North America - its largest overseas market, according to Nose, who’s set to become president of alcoholics drinks business Sapporo Breweries at the end of March. Sapporo may also look at acquiring a brewery or expanding its contract manufacturing in the U.S. as part of the efforts, he said, declining to share more details such as investment or the brewing capacity being planned.
Presence on American soil will not only save transportation costs for Sapporo but also allow it to better penetrate what the Brewers Association, a craft-beer trade group, says is a $116 billion U.S. beer market. The company predicts sales volume of its

Canada: Barley export comes to stop due to high prices
|
On February 17, Statistics Canada estimated the barley acreage of 2021 at 3.190 mln ha (last year – 3.060 mln) vs. a large majority of private estimates of 3.5-3.6 mln ha. Production forecasts are 10.6 (unchanged from last year) vs. 12.5 mln tonnes forecast privately, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in March.
The combined demand of the Alberta feed and Vancouver export sector with no relief from U.S. corn imports has driven market up to more than C$300 track Lethbridge equal to US$300FOB Vancouver. At these price levels export business has come to a stop for old and even new crop barley. Farmers are expected to react strongly and expand their barley acreage by about half a million hectares.

Canada, AB: Big Rock Brewery announces financial results for 2020

Big Rock Brewery Inc. announced on March 11 its financial results for the three months and year ended December 30, 2020.
"We are pleased to report continued positive financial and operational results, with fourth quarter and fiscal year EBITDA (defined herein) of C$0.5 million and $C5.1 million or an improvement of C$1.1 million and C$6.2 million, respectively," said President & CEO Wayne Arsenault. "Despite the immense challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, our annual results demonstrate our organization's ability to successfully adapt to change. We were able to successfully pivot the business in a timely manner to capitalize on opportunities through our wholesale channels while limiting our downside exposure to our retail on-premise channels being restricted or closed throughout most of the year. In addition, the Corporation was able to successfully expand its product offerings into the rapidly growing ready-to-drink ("RTD") market which not only compensated for the decline in on-premise volumes, but positions the Corporation for growth in this emerging category in 2021 and beyond. USA, NY: Naples Brewing Company nearly ready to open in Naples

It’s hard enough to start a small business, but even more difficult when you live 3,000 miles apart, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on March 11.
That was the reality facing longtime buddies, Dan diGiovanna and Trevor Andrews. The pair met more than a decade ago while living in the same dormitory at the Rochester Institute of Technology. They both became engineers.
But diGiovanna found himself living in Portland, Oregon, while Andrews remained local. So when a summer house-sitting gig brought diGiovanna back to the Finger Lakes, talk intensified about opening a brewery.
And now, three years later, Andrews and diGiovanna are nearly ready to open Ontario County's latest brewery: Naples Brewing Company, 104 North Main St. They are aiming for later this spring.
"I've always wanted to live in Naples," said Andrews, a Marcus Whitman High School graduate. "I love the lake. I grew up on it. There's so much hiking and awesome stuff to do around here. We were noticing there seems to be an uptick in tourism in the area. We've definitely seen a lot of growth in Naples. We seem like we're getting in on the ground floor of that and we're pretty excited."

USA, NC: Vaulted Oak Brewing to open in east Charlotte in mid-April

Vaulted Oak Brewing expects to open its doors in mid-April in east Charlotte, WSOC Charlotte reported on March 9.
That roughly 4,000-square-foot brewery is located at 3726 Monroe Road. It is part of the Echo Hills and Oakhurst neighborhoods, near the Bojangles Entertainment Complex.
Friends Kiel Arrington, Johnie Jones and Chuck Kistler are behind that $1.5 million venture, which breathes new life into a former bank branch.

USA, IL: Imperial Oak Brewing to become Brookfield’s first brew pub
|
Chris DiBraccio will see a long-held dream come true this month when Brookfield’s first brew pub, Imperial Oak Brewing, opens its doors to craft beer enthusiasts at 9526 Ogden Ave., the former home of Brixie’s Saloon, the Riverside Brookfield Landmark reported on March 9.
“It’s a little different, right?” DiBraccio said during an interview at the brewery last week as workers hustled to put the finishing touches on the business. “This is what I really wanted to do here.”
It’s the second location for Imperial Oak, which tapped the first of its signature brews at its brewery in Willow Springs in 2014. The Brookfield location features a seven-barrel system, whose gleaming stainless-steel tanks are on full view for visitors and will produce 800 barrels of beer a year.
The location’s signature brew, in a nod to the building’s history, is the Brixie’s Lager, a crisp, clean Czech-style pilsner with 5-percent alcohol by volume. The lager will be just one of 16 Imperial Oak beers on tap. The brewery will also offer hard cider, wine and a full selection of hard liquor.
As far as the beers go, however, the only ones being served all bear the Imperial Oak label.

USA: Cybersecurity incident disrupts Molson Coors’ beer-making operations
|
Molson Coors, the brewer behind the Miller and Coors brands, revealed a "cybersecurity incident" at the company that has disrupted its beer-making operations, CNN reported on March 10.
The Chicago-based company said in a regulatory filing on March 11 that the hack has taken its systems offline, delaying and disrupting parts of Molson Coors' operations, including its production and shipments.
An investigation into the incident has begun, the company said, and it's "working around the clock to get its systems back up as quickly as possible."
"We have engaged a leading forensic IT firm to assist our investigation into the incident," chief communications and corporate affairs officer Adam Collins. "We will continue to communicate with our business partners with updates."
Molson Coors makes a dozens of beer, hard seltzer and non-alcoholic beverages.
There have been a number of high-profile cybersecurity incidents recently. For example, hundreds of thousands of Microsoft Exchange users around the world were targeted as part of a Chinese-linked hack.

South Korea: Prolonged COVID-19 pandemic brings changes in drinking practices in South Korea
|
The spread of the trend of drinking alone at home amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has brought changes in drinking practices in South Korea, with more people opting to drink less but more frequently, The Korea Bizwire reported on March 11.
According to a report on the results of a survey of 2,000 adults, released jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. on March 10, Koreans drank on an average of nine days per month last year.
The number of drinking days was up from 8.9 days in 2016, 8.8 days in 2017 and 2018, and 8.5 days in 2019.
In contrast, the amount of alcohol consumption per drinking session fell to 6.7 glasses last year from 6.9 a year ago.
Among the respondents, 41.4 percent chose to drink beer, followed by soju at 32.7 percent, traditional liquor at 15.1 percent and imported wine at 4.5 percent.
Compared to a year ago, the share of those who chose to drink beer and imported wine rose by 4.5 percentage points and 0.3 percentage points, respectively, while soju and traditional liquor declined by 0.2 percentage points and 5 percentage points, respectively.

New Zealand: Brewers asking for temporary cut in excise tax on keg beer
|
New Zealand’s brewers are asking for a temporary cut in excise tax on keg beer to help support struggling bars and restaurants, Stuff.co.nz reported on March 11.
The Brewers Association has asked that the Government immediately reduce the tax paid by half.
It’s the second time the association has asked for excise tax relief.
In May last year, the association campaigned unsuccessfully to get the Government to waive tax on about 50,000 litres of keg beer that were flushed away after they went stale while hospitality businesses were closing during the April national lockdown.
Dylan Firth, the association’s executive director, said: “We believe there is need for additional Government support that can be delivered in an extremely targeted way via an immediate 50 per cent reduction on excise tax for keg beer.”
Firth pointed to action taken in Britain to support hospitality businesses.
“We applaud the UK Government for their wide-ranging initiatives in the recently announced Budget, where for a second year have announced a freeze on all alcohol excise until 2021 and a significantly reduced VAT rate specifically for hospitality businesses of 5 per cent,” he said.

World: Heineken announces new CFO
|
Heineken has announced that Laurence Debroux will be stepping down as the company’s CFO, while Harold van den Broek has been named as her successor, FoodBev.com reported on March 10.
Debroux will depart her current CFO and executive board member roles after the company’s annual general meeting of shareholders (AGM) on 22 April 2021.
Heineken’s supervisory board will nominate Harold van den Broek – currently serving as president hygiene at RB (Reckitt Benckiser) – to be appointed as executive board member and CFO at the AGM, for a period of four years. Subject to shareholder appointment, he will join Heineken on 1 June this year, working with Debroux to ensure a smooth transition.
Van den Broek has spent more than 30 years at fast-moving consumer goods companies in a range of finance roles, including as CFO hygiene at RB before he assumed his current role. He began his career at Unilever in 1991, living and working in Europe, across Asia and in Russia.

UK: Marston’s CEO to step down
|
Ralph Findlay, chief executive of Marston’s, is stepping down after 20 years at the helm of the pub group, having recently seen off an unsolicited bid from the US private equity group Platinum, the Financial Times reported on March 11.
Marston’s said Findlay planned to step down at the end of the financial year in September, giving him time to oversee the reopening of pubs for both indoor and outdoor service following the current lockdown. He has led Marston’s since 2001.
Ralph “is one of the longest serving business leaders in an industry which has seen significant change and challenges during that time”, said chairman William Rucker. “He leaves Marston’s in excellent shape and well-positioned to rebuild trading and go from strength to strength when restrictions are lifted.”
Bolstered by the sale of its brewing business into a £780 mln joint venture with Carlsberg in May, Marston’s has been in a stronger position than several other pub groups as the industry has struggled to cope with lengthy closures during the crisis.

Nepal: AB InBev announces launch of Budweiser in Nepal
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world's leading brewer, has announced the launch of its global brand Budweiser in Nepal, fortifying the brewer's presence in South Asia, the Himalayan Times reported on March 12.
With this launch, AB InBev aims to expand its product line-up to cater to evolving consumer preferences and redefine the beer segment in the country.
The world's leading brewer forayed into Nepal last year with the introduction of Foster's beer, in an exclusive partnership with Raj Brewery Pvt Ltd from the Jawalakhel Group of Industries (JGI).
