Brewery news Japan: Pandemic propelling an unexpected boom in alcohol-free beer
His social life severely curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, Tadasu Masuda found himself embracing the opportunity to take what in Japan is known as “liver rest days” and try out a range of alcohol-free beer brands, Reuters reported on March 15.

They tasted much better than he expected, and while Masuda is not giving up on regular beer, he’s now committed to the occasional break.

“I want to keep drinking these and make sure my liver gets days off,” said the civil servant who lives in Kobe, western Japan, adding that he has become more health-conscious since recently entering middle age.

The pandemic is propelling an unexpected boom in alcohol-free beer that has Asahi Group forecasting a 20 per cent jump in revenue for non and low alcoholic beer this year after flat sales in 2020. Asahi is also debuting a new “Beery” label and has plans to expand its line-up.

Main rival Kirin, which had a head start in the category, expects its sales volumes in the segment to jump 23 per cent this year after a 10 per cent rise in 2020 and recently revamped one of its main non-alcoholic beers.

Increased time at home, according to industry executives, has freed Japanese drinkers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors beginning to brew beer again after cyberattack
Molson Coors is beginning to brew beer again after a cyberattack, FOX 6 Milwaukee reported on March 16.

According to a filing with the SEC last week, the company acknowledges "a systems outage" caused by a "cybersecurity incident" with delays or disruptions to brewery operations, production, and shipments.

Molson Coors went on to say it was "working around the clock to get its systems back up as quickly as possible."

On Monday, March 15, brewery officials released the following statement:

"Thanks to the tireless work of our IT team and our outside experts, we are ramping back up and all of our breweries in North America are currently running."

Just last month, in its 2020 annual report, Molson Coors warned of potential technology risks and threats:

"Because of our reliance on third-party service providers and internal and outsourced systems, we could experience a disruption to our business."

Brewery news World: Tequila Regulatory Council in two legal proceedings against Heineken for using tequila’s name in beer
Using the word tequila in a drink is serious business. The Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT) defends that word because it is a Mexican drink with a designation of origin. In other words, tequila is only discussed when the drink is produced in certain municipalities in Mexico and with special parameters. But Heineken uses that name in Europe, on a beer, Market Research Telecast reported on March 13.

This issue has confronted the tequila organization and the Dutch brewery for several years. But in 2019, the European Commission (EC) granted tequila recognition as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). Thus, it became the first product in Mexico to access the maximum protection model in Europe, as shared by the CRT in writing.

However, Heineken misuses the word tequila in a beer. In it, use only the “smell” of the Mexican drink. The CRT detailed to Business Insider Mexico that it has two legal proceedings against the brewery. These began in 2017 and are currently ongoing in the courts of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and Nanterre, France.

In addition, on March 18 the representatives of the CRT in Europe will have a hearing in Amsterdam on the case. Business Insider Mexico sought out the company for details ...More info on site

Barley news France: Growing conditions for soft wheat, barley remain favourable
Growing conditions for French soft wheat remain favourable, with 88% of crops rated good or excellent in the week to March 8, unchanged from the previous week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on March 12.

The rating was well above the corresponding score of 63% a year ago, when crop development was hampered by torrential rain.

Durum, the wheat variety used in pasta, showed the same good/excellent rating of 88%, also stable on the week and above a year-earlier score of 67%.

Conditions for winter barley were similarly favourable, with 85% of crops rated good or excellent against 84% the previous week, FranceAgriMer said in its weekly cereal crop report.

That compared with a year-earlier score of 63%.

Sowing of spring barley was nearing an end, with 90% of the expected area drilled by March 8, the office said.

That compared with a week-earlier figure of 51% and year-earlier progress of 33%.

Barley news Australia: Barley farmers meaningfully break into Saudi market for the first time in five years
Australian barley farmers have moved on, big time. Facing massive Chinese tariffs and an urgent need to ship a bumper harvest, they’re piling into one of the world’s mega markets for the grain -- Saudi Arabia, Bloomberg reported on March 14.

For the first time in about five years, Australia has meaningfully broken into the Saudi market, beating usually fierce competition from other suppliers, and there are signs that sales will continue at least until the middle of the year, according to Andrew Whitelaw, an agricultural analyst at Thomas Elder Markets.

“We lost China,” said Whitelaw in Melbourne, but Saudi Arabia is shaping up to be Australia’s biggest customer this season. “If you look at the last three tenders in a row, we got the lion’s share of most of that,” he said. “In terms of volumes to Saudi Arabia, we’re getting more than anyone else.”

In tender results announced last week, Australia appears likely to provide the bulk of a purchase of 660,000 tons, pushing out traditional suppliers from the European Union and Black Sea. Australian trade data show the value of exports to Saudi Arabia far exceeded every other destination in December.

Barley news Ukraine: Barley prices exceed those of hight quality milling wheat thanks to demand from China
Prices for Ukrainian-origin barley from this year's harvest have exceeded those of high quality milling wheat due to strong demand from China, analysts at APK-Inform said on March 12.

Forward contract prices for 2021 harvest barley stood at $220-$230 a tonne CPT (carriage paid to) Black Sea June-July delivery, while high quality milling wheat was priced at between $218-$227 a tonne with the same delivery date, the consultancy said.

"Such an atypical spread is largely due to the high purchasing activity of China in the barley segment, both old and new crops. The volumes of barley imports by China are simply off scale," it said in a statement.

APK-Inform noted that China had bought 2.7 million tonnes of Ukrainian barley from July 2020 to February 2021 compared with 800,000 tonnes in the same period a season earlier.

The prices for the 2020 harvest barley are between $247 and $255 a tonne CPT Black Sea, the consultancy said.

Ukraine is a traditional barley grower and exporter, shipping the commodity mostly to North Africa and the Middle East.

Ukraine harvested 7.8 million tonnes of barley in 2020 and is likely to export 4.2 million tonnes in the 2020/21 season, according to APK-Inform estimates. The government sees the exports ...More info on site

Barley news Australia & China: Australian government takes next step in China WTO barley action
The Australian government has formally taken the next step in taking its Chinese counterpart to the World Trade Organization over China's decision to implement tariffs on Australian barley due to alleged dumping, the Queensland Country Life reported on March 15.

Australian officials announced their intentions to take WTO action last December and following failed talks between the two countries, today it lodged an application to establish a formal dispute settlement panel.

Minister for Trade Dan Tehan said the next step followed dispute settlement consultations in late January between Australia and China.

"While there was constructive engagement on both sides, these consultations did not resolve our concerns," Mr Tehan said.

He said it was the natural progression in Australia's bid to clear its name over the allegations, which it has strenuously denied all along.

"This decision is an appropriate use of an established system to resolve our differences and is consistent with action Australia has previously taken to address concerns with measures imposed by other trading partners."

Opinion has been split in the grains world over the merits of taking WTO action.

Grain Growers, which has been supportive of the push, welcomed the news.

"This issue that has had a significant impact on Australian barley markets is outside of ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: 100% of winter barley crop in good condition
Around 98% of Ukrainian winter wheat crops and 100% of winter barley were in good condition, according to the latest data of the Ukrainian state weather centre.

The regrowth of crops, as sampled by meteorologists on February 20, showed weak and rare seedlings on 2% of winter wheat fields and 7% of winter rape areas, the centre said in a report published late on Friday.

Rare seedlings of winter wheat were registered mostly on fields in western Ukraine, it noted.

Ukraine's national agrarian academy said last week most winter grain crops are in good or satisfactory condition and only limited areas in central parts of the country were damaged by frost.

Ukraine's economy ministry has said it expects that the area under all grains could increase to 15.7 million hectares this year, up from 15.2 million hectares in 2020.

The favourable weather could help farmers to increase their grain crop to 75 million tonnes this year from 65.5 million tonnes in 2020.
