Canada: 2020-21 barley exports projected at 3.7 mln tonnes
|
For 2020-21, Canadian barley exports are projected at 3.7 million tonnes (Mt), 21% higher than last year and the highest level since 2007-08, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their March report.
Statistics Canada (STC) reported that total exports of barley for the first half of the crop year increased by 41% compared to the same period a year ago, including a 58% rise in exports of raw barley grain and an 8% drop in exports of barley product. With respect to the export destinations, about 91% of the overseas sales of raw barley grain were shipped to China and the rest to Japan and the US. For barley products, approximately 50% went to the US, 40% went to Japan and Mexico, the remaining went to other overseas markets.
Total domestic use is projected to increase by 2%, driven by strong feed use. Industrial use is expected to decrease slightly.
Carry-out stocks are projected to decline to 0.6 Mt, a record low, based on expected robust exports and solid domestic feed use, despite a good supply at the beginning of the crop year.
The average price of feed barley for 2020-21 is expected to rise by 12% from 2019-20 to C$260/t, as

USA, PA: WingCraft Brewing + Tavern launching next month in Camp Hill
|
A transformation is brewing at Arooga’s along Route 15 in Cumberland County, pennlive.com reported on March 17.
Next month, the restaurant at 1300 Camp Hill Bypass in East Pennsboro Township will transition to WingCraft Brewing + Tavern, a new concept developed by the Arooga’s Grille House & Sports Bar chain. WingCraft will brew small batches of beer and serve brewpub fare and upscale dishes.
“This concept has been a pet project of mine for a long time and brings me back to the days of Brew 22,” said Gary Huether, Jr., the chain’s president and co-founder.
The former Brew 22 American Tavern operated across from Arooga’s in West Hanover Township and specialized in craft beer with a pub menu. Huether is joined in the latest project by Phil Paetzold, a 25-year industry veteran and chef. He also worked at Brew 22, and most recently was managing partner at Bonefish Grill in Lower Allen Township.
Arooga’s interior was renovated to fit the new concept. Wall-to-wall televisions and sports memorabilia have been replaced with reclaimed wood walls, tavern lighting and a glass enclosed brew room.
Beers and cider including West Coast IPA, Blood Orange Wheat, American IPA, Espresso Vanilla Porter, Strawberry Rhubarb and Peach Mango Cider will

UK: Beam Suntory investing £6 mln in Glen Garioch’s renowned distillery
|
International spirits company Beam Suntory is making a significant £6 million investment in Glen Garioch’s renowned distillery in Oldmeldrum. The renovation will see the distillery return to more traditional production processes, while also introducing new cutting-edge technology for direct-fired distillation, the Grampian Online reported on March 16.
The planned changes will also reduce the distillery’s carbon footprint.
Work began in 2020, and various stages are expected to be completed over the course of 2021.
The cornerstone of this transformation will be the reintroduction of floor maltings as well as the installation of direct-fired heating to the wash still – traditional methods still used by only a handful of whisky distilleries.
The return to these traditional processes is a sign of Glen Garioch’s deeprespect for its rich heritage, as well as the complexity and quality of its small batch, hand-crafted Highland single malt.
To complement this return to tradition, Glen Garioch has developed a state-of-the-art, highly efficient and safe method for direct fired distillation, which Beam Suntory anticipates will reduce the distillery’s carbon footprint by around 15 per cent.
The first new make spirit will come off the stills later in 2021.
Distillery manager, Kwanele Mdluli commented: “We are proud to make this investment in Glen Garioch’s historic

Australia: Asahi to buy barley directly from farmers
|
In a move that will go some way to help combat China’s tariffs on Australian barley exports the Japanese-owned Asahi Beverages will now source malt direct from Australian growers for the first time in decades to make the likes of Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught, the Beer and Brewer reported on March 16.
Asahi, which developed the new direct sourcing program after it purchased Carlton & United last year, will now buy more than 70,000 tonnes of malted barley direct from farmers in Victoria and southern NSW to be used in their Yatala (QLD) and Abbotsford (VIC) breweries. Growers in northern NSW are expected to join the scheme before this year’s harvest while the first beers brewed under the program will be rolled out in April.
Asahi said the new supply chain will mean more than 90 per cent of barley used in their beverages will be purchased direct from farmers while the program is set to expand to their smaller breweries including Cascade in Hobart.
The lifeline comes after Australia’s A$600 million annual barley export to China was all but ended in May last year following Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s call for an independent inquiry into the origins of COVID-19. Custom authorities

South Korea: Koreans tend to drink more frequently but daily drinking volume declines during pandemic
|
During the pandemic the culture of drinking solo at home prevailed in South Korea, with adults tending to drink more frequently every month, though the average daily drinking volume has declined, The Drinks Business reported on March 18.
According to the “2020 Alcohol Industry Information Survey” report issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of South Korea, consumers were drinking on average nine days a month last year.
The monthly average drinking frequency has been decreasing year by year since 2016 (8.9 days), with 8.8 days each in 2017 and 2018, and 8.5 days in 2019, but a renounce was seen last year.
The survey was conducted from 2-15 September last year on 2,000 men and women aged 19 to 59 in South Korea who consumed alcohol more than once a month within the previous 6 months.
Unlike the monthly frequency, the average daily alcohol consumption has decreased (6.7 glasses), compared with 2019 (6.9 glasses).
In terms of the drinking occasion, most respondents were “drinking solo” (74.9%) and “drinking at home” (72.0%). The answers were followed by: “various types of beer” (54.9%), “buying alcohol from convenience store” (49.9%), “enjoying drinking” (49.6%), “low drinking alcohol” (34.7%), etc.

India & UK: Indian liquor makers body calls for cutting non-trade barriers on export of Indian alcoholic beverages to Britain
|
Indian liquor makers body CIABC on March 16 urged the government to ask the UK to reduce non-trade barriers to provide easy market access for domestic alcoholic beverages in Britain, the Outlook India reported.
The UK should also remove a restriction of minimum 3 years maturation period for whisky as well as for rum, as it has been scientifically established that in warm Indian conditions, spirit ages 3-3.5 times faster than in the UK, Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) said in a statement.
The Indian government should "ask the UK government for removal of non-tariff barriers to allow easy export of Indian made alcoholic beverages to the UK", it added.
The body has suggested that the Indian whiskies should be allowed to be sold in the UK, irrespective of whether they are made from malt, grain spirits or molasses-based spirits.
"They (the UK) should accept Indian recipes as India accepts British recipes for whiskey," CIABC Director-General Vinod Giri said.
India exports just Rs 5 crore worth of alcoholic beverages annually to the UK against an import of Rs 1,300 crore, he added.
Exports to the UK constitute only 0.2 per cent of India's total outward shipments of alcoholic beverages, whereas imports from the UK
