USA, CA: Ballast Point Brewing to launch in San Francisco, close down Chicago brewpub
|
Kings & Convicts Brewing Co., the San Diego-headquartered owner of Ballast Point, announced on March 23 it is moving forward with a retail expansion of the 25- year-old craft brewery into Northern California.
Plans to open a brewpub in San Francisco were originally announced in 2018 but later halted in 2019 by former owner Constellation Brands prior to the sale of Ballast Point to Kings & Convicts. Ballast Point San Francisco is expected to open by the end of the year and will join the craft brewery’s five Southern California locations in San Diego, Anaheim, and Long Beach.
Kings & Convicts also announced it would permanently close its Chicago Ballast Point Kitchen and Taproom in the West Loop after careful consideration. The Illinois-born Kings & Convicts remains committed to the greater Chicagoland area and is focused on projects that better align with the future of both independent breweries. This includes a continued focus on Ballast Point’s formidable roots in San Diego and future growth in its home state.
“We love Chicago and will remain invested in the region with Kings & Convicts, but have decided it’s in the best interest of Ballast Point and its long-term success to focus on our roots

USA, AZ: Grand Canyon Brewing & Distillery is expanding to Page, Arizona
|
From firehouse to brewhouse, Grand Canyon Brewing & Distillery is expanding to Page, Arizona with a third brewery location this July. In a space that once housed the old fire station and most recently served as a maintenance garage for city vehicles, the brewery will be just under 10,000 sq. ft. on .86-acre of land at 714 North Navajo Drive, Brewbound reported on March 20.
“I’m thrilled to have found the perfect location to expand our brand to the north rim of the canyon. I can’t wait to showcase our award-winning beers, spirits and culture with the millions of tourists and locals that flock to see our very own wonder of the world,” John Peasley, Founder, Grand Canyon Brewing & Distillery.
Located near Horseshoe Bend, the brewery will feature an impressive 15-barrel Bohemian Monobloc brewing system, the same system from the original Grand Canyon Brewing & Distillery location in Williams. Guests will enjoy a large brewpub with full-service menu and bar, lounge areas, rustic décor, two pool tables, a foosball table, shuffleboard and over 20 TV’s. The space will feature a large outdoor patio and rollup glass garage doors to enjoy the beautiful weather and scenic views.

USA, NY: TALEA Beer Co. opens its brewery and taproom in Brooklyn
|
TALEA Beer Co. has finally opened their brewery and taproom in Brooklyn, making them the only exclusively woman and veteran-owned and founded production brewery (and taproom!) in NYC, Brewbound reported on March 21.
Founded by new moms Tara Hankinson and NAVY veteran LeAnn Darland in 2018, TALEA Beer Co. is a culmination of their love for craft beer and their passion to create an approachable, inclusive beer company. TALEA Beer Co. aims to create easy-drinking staples that you can comfortably share with your hard-seltzer and wine-drinking friends or open with the most discerning beer connoisseur.
Their beers are at the intersection of high quality and low-bitterness with fruit-forward flavors, including raspberry, mango, guava, passionfruit, and citrus. The bright and airy cafe by day and taproom by night offers Partners Coffee, Pilot Kombucha, pastries from Bien Cuit, beer flights, beer cocktails, guided tastings, and light bites like cheese and charcuterie plates.
On a mission to disrupt the male-dominated craft beer industry, LeAnn and Tara were both avid homebrewers with MBAs who met after leaving their corporate jobs in tech and media to join the beer industry. Working together at Hopsy, they quickly realized that despite the booming craft beer market, no breweries were actively

Canada, NB: Tide & Boar Brewing opens its new location in Moncton
|
More than a year after it was first announced, Tide & Boar Brewing has opened its new taproom and restaurant location in Moncton, the Canadian Beer News reported on March 22.
Originally a nanobrewery in the basement of Moncton’s Tide & Boar Gastropub, the brewery is now much larger but retains its focus on “modern brewing styles and some twists on classics”, with an opening line-up that includes Uncut Hops IPA (6.8% abv), Special Blend #10 IPA (7% abv), and two variants on Sour Otis (5.5% abv), one with raspberry and peach, and the other strawberry and rhubarb.
The taproom also features several guest taps pouring beer and cider from other Maritime breweries, a selection of wine and cocktails, and a food menu including pizza, wings, burgers, sandwiches, and other beer-friendly items. For take-away sales, house-brewed beers can be purchased in cans, crowlers, growlers, and kegs.
Tide & Boar Brewing is located at 1355 Main Street in Moncton, and is open Wednesday to Saturday. The site also includes a location of Duo Cafe which serves breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday.

USA: AB InBev, clothing company Patagonia end trademark dispute
|
Clothing company Patagonia and the world’s largest brewer, AB InBev, have ended their trademark dispute over a new beer brand in the US, The Drinks Business reported on March 23.
Both companies have agreed to settle their dispute over the launch of a Patagonia-branded beer.
They filed a joint stipulation at the Central District Court of California on March 22, where they both sought to dismiss the lawsuit.
The court document states: “The parties stipulate and agree to the dismissal with prejudice of this entire action, including all claims and counterclaims, pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure. The parties will bear their respective costs and attorneys’ fees.”
The financial terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.
Patagonia first brought its case against AB InBev in 2019 after the latter released a new beer brand with a “strikingly similar” logo to the outdoor clothing specialist. Patagonia accused AB InBev of taking “advantage of its tremendous goodwill” and of setting out to create confusion between the two brands.
AB InBev obtained the trademark for Patagonia beer in the US back in 2012, but did not launch the Patagonia Brewing Company brand in the country until 2018. The brewery which makes the product in question, Cervecería y

USA, LA: Dixie Beer relaunches as Faubourg Brewing
|
The beer brand formerly known as Dixie officially relaunches as Faubourg Brewing this week, starting with a name change on its website and social media accounts and culminating in a public grand reopening at its New Orleans East brewery on Friday, March 26.
Nearly a month after the name “Dixie” was painted over atop the brewery’s large brick tower, the rollout of Faubourg beer has officially begun. As of March 23, the brewery’s website continues to display the Dixie name and logo (and not Faubourg Brewing), but its Instagram handle and Facebook account have been updated. The brewery will begin distributing the new beers to bars and restaurants this month, according to NOLA.com, and newly-branded cans and bottles are expected to be available for retail in early May.
The 114-year old New Orleans-born brewery first announced a name change in June 2020, when owner Gayle Benson said it was “necessary to reflect” on the brewery’s brand in light of “critical conversations about racism and systemic social issues” taking place in the country. Dixie is a nickname for the southern U.S., and a song by the same name became an unofficial anthem for the Confederacy during the Civil War, creating the lasting association.

Japan: Kirin counting on beer dispenser to help boost sales
|
Japan's Kirin Holdings is counting on its beer dispenser to help boost sales which had fallen for 16 straight years, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on March 20.
Kirin said it hopes its compact beer dispenser, Home Tap, will draw 100,000 subscribers this year. The company had rolled out the machine, which dispenses beer with a foamy head, in 2017 but a production bottleneck meant that it was unable to offer the service on a large scale until now.
"I want to make the beer market attractive at any cost," Takayuki Fuse, CEO of Kirin Brewery, a unit of Kirin Holdings told reporters recently at a news conference. He called Home Tap "an important pillar" for the business and "one of its efforts to revitalize the beer market."
The subscription service is for a range of fresh beer, including Kirin's key Ichiban Shibori brand, as well as craft beers. Subscribers only pay for the beers and get Home Tap for free during their term.
Even before the coronavirus outbreak, the Japanese beer industry has been facing a fall in consumption. In addition to increasing health consciousness, changes in the workplace -- due to more telecommuting and less obligatory socializing with bosses -- mean fewer
