USA: Domestic tax-paid beer shipments increase by 2.6% in February and by 2.5% in January-February this year
|
The US Beer Institute published an unofficial estimate of domestic tax paid shipments by beer brewers for February 2021 on March 24.
The February 2021 estimate is 11,625,000 barrels, an increase of 2.6% compared to February 2020 removals of 11,325,000.
The year-to-date beer shipments (January-February) are up by 2.5% to 24,350,000 barrels.
The Beer Institute is a national trade association for the American brewing industry, representing brewers of all sizes, as well as beer importers and industry suppliers—an industry that supports more than 2.1 million jobs and provides more than $328 billion to the American economy. |
The partners behind Rad Brat, Dana Point’s newest fast-casual, specialty eatery which opened on December 14, 2020, are pleased to announce a brewery and tasting room concept, Rad Beer Co., slated to unveil in Anaheim’s booming beer hub in April 2021, Brewbound reported on March 23.
The vision of craft beer ambassadors Cameron Collins (Founder of Brew Ha Ha Productions) and Dylan Mobley (former head brewer at Bottle Logic Brewing and current head brewer of Helmsman Ale House of Newport Beach), combined with entrepreneurs Joe Wilshire (Docent Brewing / Project Social) and Steve Martin (Project Social), Rad Beer embodies California culture with a lively, unpretentious ambiance, the aesthetic of a ‘90s skate shop and beloved record store, and a legit soundtrack to fit the vibe.

USA, OH: Aeonian Brewing Co. to open its doors in Alliancde on March 31
|
Something new is brewing in Alliance, the Canton Repository reported on March 26.
Aeonian Brewing Co., located at 120 W. Chestnut St., will open its doors Wednesday, March 31. The site previously housed Mount Union Mill, a pet and garden supply store.
The 15-barrel brewpub is owned by Brandon Benson and Dean Economous.
"I've been brewing for about nine years professionally," said Benson, who previously worked at Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. in Akron. "As a brewer, you always have that goal to have your own brewery."
He described Alliance as "the perfect location" for the brewery, because the city sits about halfway between Economous's home in Salem and Benson's home in North Canton.
"It kind of hit home for both of us where the location was, and what we thought Alliance would need and support," Benson said.
Aeonian offers a variety of craft beers, including several IPAs and a stout. Benson said they also plan to add a lager and a session IPA.
The new spot includes a food menu with items such as fish and chips, burgers, wraps and chicken tenders.

Canada, AB: Wild Rose Brewery to undergo C$4.12 million upgrade of its Calgary facility
|
A Calgary brewery that was recently acquired by Sleeman Breweries Ltd. is set to undergo a massive expansion of its production facility that's expected to result in more of its product on more store shelves in the coming years, CTV Toronto reported on March 221.
Wild Rose Brewery has announced plans for a C$4.12 million upgrade of its location in southeast Calgary that will increase its production capacity and see the adoption of advanced canning technology.
"We've seen dramatic growth of canned beer here in Alberta over the past 18 months," explained Brian Smith, Wild Rose Brewery's director of operations, in a statement released on March 22. "During this time, our team had done everything possible to keep up with the increasing consumer demand.
"This expansion will address our current capacity issues while providing the flexibility for further expansion to support long-term growth."
The upgrades, including the new canning line and additional tank capacity, are expected to be complete by the spring of 2022.
Wild Rose Brewery shareholders voted in favour of selling the company to Ontario-based Sleeman in 2019 and the deal was finalized weeks later.
Dave Klassen, vice-president of operations and logistics with Sleeman Breweries, says expansion was always in the plans.

USA, IL: Relative Brewing Co. to open in Roselle's Main Street
|
A new microbrewery wants to open in Roselle's Main Street area to be a part of the bustle and activity of the village's Town Center, the Chicago Daily Herald reported on March 24.
Under its proposal, Relative Brewing Co. would move into a former day care at 10 Springs St., next to Zeaport Equipment and Dan's Auto Repair, and less than a mile from the Roselle Metra station. The 2,784-square-foot building would house 10 barrels for brewing capacity and would contain a taproom for tasting. Serving alcohol only, the brewery's bar area would be fairly small, holding approximately 18 people.
An opening date is unknown as the company is seeking village board approval for special use to operate the bar in that location. The next village board hearing for the brewery is April 12.
Owner Kathleen Egan could not be reached for comment.
In its proposal to the village, Relative Brewing Co. cited the activity of the Roselle Town Center, its pedestrian nature, proximity to the Metra station and the planned Metro 19 apartment complex. Roselle officials say the Pollyanna Brewing Co. opened a brewery and a taproom in the Main Street area for these same reasons.

USA, CA: Kitchen Sink Brewing Company to take former Inland Empire Brewing Company space in Riverside
|
Inland Empire Brewing Company has closed, but it appears its replacement is already there, the Press-Enterprise reported on March 24.
Founded in Riverside in 2009, Inland Empire Brewing Company was one of the longest-operating breweries here in the Inland Empire. The brewery also served as a contract brewery for several up-and-coming local breweries, including Off the Grid Brewery and Three Marm Brewing Co.
However, in June, the taproom was temporarily closed and the owners encouraged getting local craft beer delivered via the socal.beer website.
The closure became permanent, according to a comment from the brewery on a Facebook post. The beer delivery service remains active.
In its place — 1710 Palmyrita Ave., Suite 11 — will be Kitchen Sink Brewing Company.
The new owners are apparently fans of Inland Empire Brewing Company, as one of the first beers announced by Kitchen Sink is an IEBC staple: Victoria orange barleywine.
Victoria is expected to be available in cans this week.

USA, TX: Paradigm Brewing Company slated for the Tomball Business & Technology Park in Tomball
|
CCJ Collaborations has revealed that the brewery slated for the Tomball Business & Technology Park will be named Paradigm Brewing Company. Aiming to be the model of brewing, founder, Tomball native, and professor of Brewery Operations and Management at Texas A&M, Chris Juergen, says the name reflects the brewery’s core ideology, Brewbound reported on March 25.
“Paradigm means the standard. The core brewing philosophy for Paradigm Brewing Company is to be the standard at which technology meets technique,” says Juergen. “The very traditional styles that exist, as originally intended, we want to make them as pure as possible. Also keeping in mind brewing is an art form, we have plans to be off the wall and extremely creative. This is incredibly important, as new technology, techniques, styles, and ideas are discovered daily.”
Paradigm Brewing Company is co-owned by Juergen and Josh Schwaiger. Schwaiger, a veteran of the beverage industry and Sam Houston State University graduate, brings years of experience in sales, marketing, and distribution from stops at Karbach Brewing, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo.

USA, MA: Drawing Board Brewing Company signs lease for Florence location
|
Drawing Board Brewing Company recently signed a lease at 36 Main Street in Florence, MA, across from the infamous Florence Pie Bar, Brewbound reported on March 24.
Owner and Operator Corey Lynch is partially funding the opening of the Drawing Board Brewing Company with capital raised from community investors through Regulation Crowdfunding, a new regulation made possible by the JOBS Act, Title III in 2016.
Lynch has extensive experience brewing beer, having started in 2011. Over the past ten years, he has won multiple awards at brewing competitions across Western Massachusetts, including a Gold Medal for his Oktoberfest style beer, and multiple silver medals at BJCP sanctioned events. USA, VA: Michael Waltrip Brewing Company plans opening by mid-summer
|
Former NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip plans to open a brewery and tap room in Bristol, Virginia, officials confirmed on March 25.
His brewery would bring back to life the old Studio Brew building on Moore Street. Studio Brew started in 2016 but closed before the pandemic.
It’s an old fire museum built in 1910 and on the National Register of Historic Places.
Waltrip’s brewery business started in Phoenix and has locations in several western states.
“I am very enthusiastic to share this great news with so many friends and followers in this part of the country who have asked and waited for over the last year about where they could enjoy or purchase my beer,” Waltrip said. “I can say now it’s coming soon! We’ll brew our fabulous beers, and also open a taproom with a great kitchen along with an event space to accommodate special gatherings.”

The Czech Republic: Study shows more Czechs prefer wine to beer
|
Czechs are known as being among the top countries in the world when it comes to the consumption of beer. However, the alcoholic drink that is consumed by the most people in the Czech Republic is not actually beer but wine, according to a new survey, Radio Prague reported on March 22.
The study by the Focus agency for the wine-growers’ association Vinařský fond found that a full 73 percent of Czech adults consume wine. When it comes to beer the figure is 65 percent, Vinařský fond said in a news release.
With regard to overall volume, however, beer remains the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the country where Pilsner-style lager was invented.
The study indicates that Czech wine consumers tend to be patriotic, with almost three-quarter saying they prefer Moravian and Bohemian brands, in part because of the taste and in part because they wish to support domestic production, the director of Vinařský fond, Jaroslav Machovec, said.
Indeed, the most important finding of the report was that Czech wine drinkers are prepared to pay more for the higher quality of domestically produced víno, Mr. Machovec said.

Japan: Two of Japan’s leading brewers to tap into no sugar content beer
|
Mass-produced beers with no sugar content. That's one of the options facing beer lovers as two of Japan's four leading breweries opt to tap into the growing market of at-home drinkers and woo health-conscious imbibers, The Asahi Shimbun reported on March 25.
Suntory Beer Ltd. says its new product will boast 5.5 percent alcohol by volume with a refreshing aftertaste. Kirin Brewery Co. blazed the trail last fall with its version that has 4 percent alcohol.
The marketing ploy was driven in part by a growing fad to drink at home due to restrictions on bar closing times as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The breweries are also keen to attract drinkers who pay particular attention to their health.
The addition of sugar is traditionally a vital part of beer brewing, so removing all sugar content from the fermentation process is said to be a difficult feat from a technical perspective.
Suntory said Feb. 24 it will start selling zero-sugar canned beer on April 13 under the Perfect Suntory Beer brand.
Suntory expects 350-milliliter cans sold at convenience stores to be priced at around 198 yen ($1.82), excluding 10 percent consumption tax.

UK: Brewers increasing beer production in preparation for lockdown lifting in April
|
Breweries are increasing beer production as pubs are set to welcome punters back to beer gardens from April 12, the Lancashire Telegraph reported on March 25.
Some breweries have begun brewing but at a lower rate than they would if pubs were not subject to restrictions as many pubs are expected to be much quieter due to limited seating and potentially bad weather.
Some pubs have decided to hold off opening until hospitality is also open indoors – scheduled for May 17.
Andrew Buchanan, Thwaites director of pubs and brewing, has said that they began brewing again last week and have 2,500 pints brewing ready to go out to their pubs in the coming weeks.
He said: "Beer will start going into pubs during the week after Easter Monday.
"Before then we will have brewed around 2,500 pints and it's just great that we are in a position to welcome customers back."
The brewery, which brews cask beer for its own pubs which are located up and down the country, is initially hoping to re-open about 75 per cent of its pubs.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria’s shares surge by about 10%
|
Shares of Guinness Nigeria Plc surged by about 10% on March 26 on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, lifting the company’s market capitalization by N5.9 billion at the close of the market, the Nairametrics reported on March 26.
The impressive 9.86% surge in the shares of Guinness on March 26 was driven by investors buying interest in the shares of the brewer. Their interest has seen the shares of the company increase by more than 30% in less than a month.
Data tracked on March 26 from market open, down to the close of trading activities on the exchange revealed that the shares of Guinness Nigeria Plc surged by 9.89% or N2.7 to close higher at N30.00 per share.
This bullish move in the shares of Guinness has seen the market capitalization of the brewer increase by more than N5 billion on the exchange today, from N59.8 billion at market open to N65.7 billion at the close of market on March 26.

World: Corona launches beer pack made using barley
|
Corona has launched a new, circular form of packaging for six-packs harnessing surplus barley straw to create a sustainable paper packaging solution, the PackagingNews reported on March 22.
Corona is the first global brand to leverage technology and processes three years in development by AB InBev’s Global Innovation and Technology Center (GITEC). The company said the ground-breaking technology reimagines how to use barley, giving the essential beer ingredient new life as a sustainable packaging solution.
Barley seed will continue to make the beer but barley straw, a leftover from farmers’ harvests, will now be used through a unique pulping process built to handle its relative fragility.
Combined with 100% recycled wood fibres, this process creates a paper board to produce new packaging that is as strong and durable as a regular six-pack, but better for the planet – able to carry six cold beer bottles from the store fridge to the beach, but using far fewer resources along the way.

Australia: Coopers Ultra Light beer enjoys decade of steady growth

As the low/no alcoholic beer sector continues to lead the low/no-drinks category in Australia, Coopers Ultra Light has spearheaded the sector, enjoying over a decade of steady growth, the Beer & Brewer reported on March 25.
Australia’s largest family-owned brewery, Coopers, has been producing Coopers Ultra Light for over 30 years which has all the hallmarks of a premium beer, with the difference of containing just 0.5% alcohol volume, putting it in the non alc beer category.
The IWSR reported earlier this year that beer and cider hold a 92% share of the total low/no alcohol segment, also stating that the consumption of low/no alcoholic beverages will increase 31% by 2024.
“While competition has increased in the non-alcoholic beer market, our portfolio continues to increase its growth,” said Coopers General Manager Michael Shearer. “Sales of our non-alcoholic beer portfolio climbed 5.8% over 2020, on top of nine years of solid double-digit volume growth.”
