Brewery news USA: Value of beer imported surpasses value for wine for the first time
For the first time ever, the value of beer imported into the United States was greater in 2020 than the value for wine, Forbes reported on March 30.

Covid-19 story? Actually, no.

One-year anomaly or longer-lasting development? It just might be the latter.

There’s irony to the story, since the company largely responsible for those beer imports is a Chicago company, though not one whose name you are likely to have ever heard.

And there’s a bit of mystery, since the decline in 2020 wine imports suggests a relationship with Covid-19 that doesn’t hold up.

To be sure, there are a few other factors at work, including a domestic wine industry that has matured greatly over the last generation and a legacy domestic beer industry that hasn’t, allowing it to get squeezed by imports (as well as craft beers).

One thing is for sure, in less than a decade, wine imports have slipped from being 40% greater in value than beer imports to being 3% less.

Let’s start with beer, which is a little simpler to understand.

Beer used to come from a variety of countries. In 2020, Mexico accounted for a record 72.27% of all U.S. beer imports during a record year for all beer imports, which ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Brewers Association releases annual lists of top 50 craft and overall brewing companies
The Brewers Association — the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers — released on March 30 its annual list of the top 50 producing craft brewing companies and overall brewing companies in the U.S., based on beer sales volume. Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 40 were small and independent craft brewing companies.

“The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed where Americans purchased alcohol in 2020. Breweries who had established packaging and distribution capacity were best positioned to take advantage of the boom in off-premise sales and weather market uncertainty,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “These businesses also saw variation in performance based on geography and business model, with different parts of the country seeing very different beer trends, and draught-heavy breweries suffering.”

The Top 5 Craft Brewing Companies are:

1. D. G. Yuengling and Son Inc (Pottsville, PA) 2. Boston Beer Co (Boston, MA and Milton, DE) 3. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co (Chico, CA) 4. Duvel Moortgat (Paso Robles, CA, Kansas City, MO, and Cooperstown, NY) 5. Gambrinus (Berkeley, CA and Shiner, TX)

The Top 50 Overall Brewing Companies are:

1. Anheuser-Busch Inc (St. Louis, MO) 2. MolsonCoors (Chicago, IL) 3. Constellation (Chicago, IL) 4. Heineken USA (White Plains, NY) 5. Pabst Brewing Co (Los Angeles, CA)

Brewery news USA: Up to 2 mln hl of Molson Coors beer could be impacted by winter storms in Texas and cybersecurity incident earlier this year
More than 1.7 million barrels of beer could be impacted by severe winter storms in Texas and a cybersecurity incident earlier this year, Molson Coors Beverage said on March 29.

In February, Molson Coors’ Fort Worth, Texas brewery was forced to close for 11 days because of winter storms that hampered the state’s energy grid. Then on March 11, Molson Coors was hit with a cybersecurity incident that impacted operations, including production and shipping of products.

Molson Coors says it “has made substantial progress in restoring its systems” after the cybersecurity incident. All of its breweries are now producing again and “are ramping up to near normal levels.”

Still, the company said 1.8 million to 2 million hectolitres, around 1.53 million to a little more than 1.7 million U.S. barrels, of production and shipments would shift from the first quarter into the rest of 2021 because of the two incidents.

Molson Coors is still experiencing some delays and disruptions to its business because of the cybersecurity incident, the company said.

“Over the past few weeks, we have faced significant and unforeseeable obstacles. While these obstacles will have a negative impact on our first quarter shipments and financial results, we believe the fundamentals of our revitalization ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Mexican President railing against production of beer and milk in arid areas
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is railing against the production of beer and milk in areas where there isn’t enough water, ABC News reported on March 28.

López Obrador cancelled plans for a huge brewery on Mexico’s northern border last year, and on March 28 he questioned the whole idea of producing beer for export.

“How can we have beer breweries in the north? How can we produce beer for export? What are we exporting? Water. We don't have water in the north,” López Obrador said.

Mexico has the largest beer export sector in the world, with about $4.6 billion worth exported annually, largely to the United States.

The president's comments came during a ceremony in northern Mexico marking efforts to restore more water flow to Cuatro Cienegas, a system of marshes and saline pools that support cyanobacteria colonies and other species not found elsewhere.

The government says it has increased water flow to the marshes, and recovered about 100 acres (40 hectares) of wetlands that had dried out.

Local milk production and the water consumption to grow cattle feed is putting the unique ecosystem at risk.

López Obrador criticized milk production around Cuatro Cienegas, which is in an otherwise arid region of Coahuila state.

“Milk is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Goodwood Brewing is expanding to Indianapolis
Goodwood Brewing is expanding to a new Midwest city, the Louisville Courier Journal reported on March 29.

The Louisville-based brewery is taking over the RAM Restaurant and Brewpub in Indianapolis, Indiana at 140 S. Illinois St. with a targeted opening date of July 5.

Goodwood Indianapolis will have a full kitchen and brewery and its usual well-known beers and spirits, as well as rotating seasonal brews. The food menu will feature southern classics such as chicken and waffles, buffalo cauliflower, bourbon-brined pork chops and a weekend brunch menu. The menu will highlight house-made and craft beer-infused sauces, including Goodwood's new line of beer-infused hot sauces.

The Indianapolis location is the fourth brewpub and the first outside of Kentucky. Other Goodwood locations are in Louisville, Lexington and Frankfort.

“Goodwood is excited to be expanding to Indiana’s capital city," CEO Ted Mitzlaff said in a release. "Indianapolis is a great community with a vibrant craft beer scene. Located in the heart of downtown, we will cater to locals, sports fans, tourists and conventioneers. We offer lunch and dinner, an excellent spot for sports viewing and a variety of craft beer and spirits."

Goodwood has been producing craft beer since 2005 and expanded to beer barrel-finished ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Lift Bridge Brewing Company to open taproom and production facility in New Richmond
Lift Bridge Brewing Company has announced its plans to expand its operations by opening a taproom and production facility in New Richmond, Wisconsin, WCCO reported on March 31.

According to Lift Bridge co-founder Brad Glynn, the brewing company is remaining true to its Stillwater roots, but is “looking forward to taking advantage of the opportunities and laws Wisconsin has to offer.”

The move will allow the company to brew more beer while staying below Minnesota’s cap to still sell growlers. The production facility in Wisconsin is expected to brew up to 15,000 more barrels of beer per year.

The new taproom will be 1,200 square feet and will be able to seat 60 guests inside and 48 guests on the outside tables.

“Large LED menu boards, expanded beverage offerings for on-site consumption and to go orders and outdoor games are all part of design and development plans for the new taproom,” the release said.

The company has tentative plans to open the taproom on May 1.

The brewery will be leasing space from Big Watt Beverage Co., a specialty coffee and plant-based energy drink company with roots in Minneapolis. The two companies will continue to collaborate to create beverages.

Brewery news USA, MI: Gluten-free Brewery Nyx is planning on a summer opening in Grand Rapids
Something new, and pretty exciting, is about to happen to the vibrant beer scene in Michigan. Brewery Nyx is planning on a summer opening in Grand Rapids, and this brewery is offering up something completely different, mlive.com reported on March 31.

Business partners Jessica Stricklen and Sebastian Van Bommel are in the process of opening Brewery Nyx, which will be the very first dedicated gluten-free brewery in Michigan. While a few other breweries have released low-gluten, or reduced-gluten beers in the past, there has not been a facility that has been completely dedicated to brewing up a variety of styles of beer that are truly gluten-free.

That’s all about to change with Brewery Nyx.

“There were very limited options for gluten-free beer here,” Stricklen said. “And I wasn’t really OK with that. So, I figured, why not? Somebody’s got to do it.”

Stricklen, who has been gluten-free for about 10 years now, is a Grand Rapids native, and by her own admission, was a big fan of beer. “Then, I couldn’t drink it anymore,” she explained. “I switched to wines, and ciders, but nothing is the same as beer, but that is all that was available here.”

Gluten-free for Brewery Nyx means beers that can ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Roundhead Brewing to become New England’s first Latino-owned brewery
New England’s first Latino-owned brewery is coming soon to Boston after getting license approval from the state. The founder of Roundhead Brewing told Boston 25 News he’s aiming to open by August in the Westinghouse Plaza complex in Hyde Park.

Luis Espinoza, who’s originally from Peru, has been researching and experimenting with creating his own beer for the last 10 years. He spends a lot of time in the basement of his Jamaica Plain home finetuning the recipes of his signature microbrews.

“Sometimes my wife is calling me, and she can’t find me because I’m down here,” Espinoza explained. “I got into beer fermentation and started from there, reading books and informing myself.”

Espinoza is hoping to inspire other aspiring minority-owned businesses by proving that it’s possible.

“Being the first Latino brewer in New England is so exciting,” Espinoza said. “Every culture has a little bit to offer in the brewing world. I hope, with this brewery, I can give opportunities to others.”

The father of two credits his supportive family and his business partner, who helped turn his dream into a reality.

“We were applying to banks, and during COVID, banks were not providing capital,” said Craig Panzer, who met Espinoza at a youth soccer ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Economy ministry increases barley export forecast
Ukraine's economy ministry has slightly increased its forecast for Ukrainian barley exports in the 2020/21 July-June season to 4 million tonnes from 3.815 million a month earlier, local traders union said late on March 26.

The upward revision caused an increase in the overall grain exports to 45.67 million tonnes from the previous forecast of 45.42 million tonnes.

The ministry also reduced Ukraine's 2020 grain harvest volume to 64.94 million tonnes from 65.48 million due to a revised wheat and barley harvest.

The ministry cut 2020 wheat crop volume to 24.88 million tonnes from 25.1 million and barley to 7.64 million tonnes from 7.76 million tonnes.

The ministry gave no reason for the new figures.

Ukraine is among the largest global grain exporters, selling about 57 million tonnes to foreign buyers in the 2019/20 season from its record 2019 harvest of 75 million tonnes.

This year, the crop could exceed 75 million tonnes thanks to excellent weather conditions.

Brewery news Pakistan: Chinese liquor company starts brewing beer at its plant in Balochistan
A Chinese liquor company, the Hui Coastal Brewery and Distillery Limited, which was granted a licence in 2018 for making beer, has formally started production at its plant in Balochistan’s industrial town of Hub, Dawn.com reported on March 31.

An official of the provincial excise and taxation department confirmed on March 30 that the company had been granted a licence which it had applied for in 2017.

The company registered itself with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) on April 30, 2020, after completing installation of liquor plant in Hub town.

“The company formally started its beer production last week, which product will be supplied to Chinese nationals working at various projects launched in different areas of Pakistan under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and mines and mineral projects in Balochistan,” Mohammad Zaman Khan, director general, Excise and Taxation South, told Dawn.

He confirmed a licence had been issued to the Chinese company in 2018 as it had submitted an application to the authorities concerned in 2017, pleading that the beer and liquor brand which the company produces in China is not available in Pakistan.

“The application took over a year for approval and in 2018 the former Balochistan government agreed to issue a ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Brewery giants reacting cautiously to having to include alcohol content by gramme on product labels
Japanese brewery giants Asahi and Kirin are reacting cautiously to the government’s push to include alcoholic content by gramme on product labels, though both will be implementing changes which experts believe will be emulated by the rest of the industry eventually, FoodNavigator-Asia reported on March 29.

The Japanese government has not yet formally introduced regulations to mandate alcohol firms to include alcohol content by grammes, and not just ABV %, on product labels, but according to local industry experts major industry players such as beer breweries have already been asked to add by-gram information on their labels.

“The way things work in Japan is that the government will ask the major players to do something like this first – and major beer manufacturers would have received this request to start labelling with grammes in addition to ABV,” local alcoholic sector consultant Lee Reeves told FoodNavigator-Asia.

“The government’s reasoning behind this is to first catch up with European regulations (which go by serving units), and the second is likely that the situation is getting a bit scary with local RTD alcoholic beverages.

“For instance, a few years back these canned products would range around 5% to 6% ABV, but in the past two to three ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: AB InBev launching Thailand’s only peach-flavoured wheat beer
Global beer major AB InBev is launching the ‘first and only’ wheat beer to adopt a peach variant in Thailand under the Hoegaarden brand come April 1, exclusive to the country and in line with up-and-coming fruity beer trends, FoodNavigator-Asia reported on March 31.

According to AB InBev General Manager for Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia Dominic Kirk, the firm decided on peach as a suitable new innovative flavour for its longstanding Hoegaarden beer brand after conducting consumer studies and social media scraping to determine its trendiness locally.

“Our research showed that peach is considered to be a premium fruit here in Thailand which also celebrates Hoegaarden’s Belgian heritage of peaches being available in summer markets in Belgium, so we wanted to connect this historical tradition with the festive summer season in Thailand by launching this right before Songkran (Thai New Year) in April,” Kirk told FoodNavigator-Asia.

“We are the first innovator and only wheat beer brand to adopt this peach variant - to develop this, we embarked on a 100-day innovation plan from ideation to production shipment, using the juice from authentic Baby Gold and Catherine peaches from Europe in this product.

“Hoegaarden Peach will first hit shelves in Thailand on April 1, and ...More info on site
