USA: Average beer consumption per adult totals nearly 26 gallons last year
|
The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lifestyle restrictions have changed alcohol consumption habits, including shifting consumer preferences to wine and spirits. But beer is still a favorite alcoholic beverage in the U.S.
The average American adult consumed nearly 26 gallons of beer in 2020, which was about 3.2 gallons less than in 2010 but about the same as in 2016, Beer Marketer’s Insights reported.
Beer consumption tends to vary considerably across the country with New Hampshire leading in beer shipments per adult (21+) at 41.4 gallon per capita.

Canada: Beer excise up for the fifth time in four years and the second time during pandemic
|
On April 1, Canada federal government's excise tax on beer has increased for the fifth time in four years, and the second time during the pandemic. This increase will place additional stress on struggling bars and restaurants, as well as the 149,000 Canadians whose jobs are supported by the production and sale of beer, CNW reported.
Despite ongoing calls by more than 250 businesses and organizations requesting that the federal government put a freeze on beer taxes to provide much-needed relief to the hospitality sector, one of the highest beer tax rates in the world – almost 50% of the price of beer – has gone up yet again.
"Continuing to raise taxes on beer in the middle of the pandemic is counterproductive to the government's goal of supporting the recovery of Canada's hardest-hit businesses, including restaurants and bars," said Luke Chapman, Interim President of Beer Canada. "The last thing Canadians need right now is higher taxes."
Introduced in March of 2017, the federal government's automatic tax increase on beer occurs annually on April 1, without a vote by Parliamentarians. While the tax is applied at the brewery level, it has a trickle-down effect that extends to restaurants and Canadian consumers through higher

India: Price of beer in Uttar Pradesh reduced by Rs 20
|
Under the new excise policy of the Uttar Pradesh government, the price of beer in the state will be reduced by Rs 20 from April 1, the Economic Times reported.
While buying beer will be cheaper in the state, there will be an increase in the price of Indian and English liquor. The price of different brands of English liquor has been increased by 15 to 20 per cent.
There is no change in the excise duty and license fee of beer, but its prices are being reduced to increase the consumption of beer in Uttar Pradesh.
The sale of beer was badly affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sale at beer shops from April 2020 to November 2020 has been only 17.28 crore bottles in the state against 27.08 crore bottles last year, which is approximately 36 per cent less.
Therefore, the government has decided not to change the annual license fee of retail shops of beer.
As per the Excise Policy for the year 2020-21, the maximum retail price (MRP) of beer is higher than neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh like Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. The price of beer is also higher than those states which are prone to smuggling. Additionally, the

Romania: European Commission clears acquisition of spirits distributor Stockday by Coca-Cola HBC Romania and Heineken Romania
|
The European Commission said it has cleared the acquisition of joint control over spirits distributor Stockday by Coca-Cola HBC Romania (CCH Romania) and Heineken Romania, SeeNews reported on April 1.
The Commission concluded that the proposed deal would raise no competition concerns, given that the vertical links between the activities of CCH and Stockday are unlikely to lead to a risk of foreclosure for CCH Romania's wholesale distributors for retail and customers in the hotel, restaurant and catering sector in Romania, it said in a press release on March 31.
Currently, Stockday is solely controlled by Heineken Romania.
Stockday is an online business-to-business platform that currently distributes Heineken Romania beer and cider products to retail and Horeca customers in Romania.
CCH Romania is active in the bottling and distribution of a wide variety of non-alcoholic drinks and spirits. Heineken Romania is active in the supply of a range of local and international brands of beer and cider.

France: France bans outdoor alcohol consumption as part of measures against COVID-19 crisis
|
French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on April 1 that alcoholic beverages will be banned in French parks and other open public spaces as part of a new limited nationwide lockdown to stem the COVID-19 crisis, the Daily Sabah reported.
Addressing the National Assembly, Castex also said authorities would be quick to disperse groups of more than six people on riverbanks or squares after the new restrictions unveiled by President Emmanuel Macron late on March 31.
Castex said he "unreservedly" condemned people who had not been respecting the rules, after images of beer-swigging crowds on riverbanks under spring sunshine in cities including Paris and Lyon.
Meanwhile, prosecutors should "systematically" probe organizers of clandestine parties for putting the lives of others in danger, he added. By decreeing school closures and systematic work-from-home protocols, Macron hopes to ease pressure on hospitals facing a new surge in coronavirus cases that are overwhelming intensive care units.
But he refrained from demanding that people stay in their homes or avoid socializing completely and authorized travel between regions over the coming Easter weekend. The measures were met with a mix of resignation and anger, despite Macron's suggestion that France could begin envisioning a return to normalcy by mid-May.
