USA: Craft beer market share down but number of breweries reaches an all-time high last year
|
The Brewers Association (BA) — the trade association representing small and independent1Opens in new window American craft brewers — on April 6 released annual production figures for the U.S. craft brewing industry.
In 2020, small and independent brewers collectively produced 23.1 million barrels of beer and realized a 9% decline, decreasing craft’s overall beer market share by volume to 12.3%, down from 13.6% the previous year.
The overall beer market dropped 3% by volume in 2020. Retail dollar value was estimated at $22.2 billion, representing 23.6% market share and a 22% decline over 2019. Craft brewers provided more than 138,000 direct jobs, a 14% decrease from 2019.
“2020 was obviously a challenging year for many small brewers, but also one that proved their resilient and entrepreneurial nature,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “In a year where U.S. draught sales were down more than 40%, small brewers found new ways to connect with their customers and keep their businesses running.”
The number of operating craft breweries continued to climb in 2020, reaching an all-time high of 8,764, including 1,854 microbreweries, 3,219 brewpubs, 3,471 taproom breweries, and 220 regional craft breweries. Throughout the year, there were 716 new brewery openings and

South Korea: HiteJinro’s beer sales up 12% in 2020
|
HiteJinro has been leading the growth and development of the domestic beer market through endless innovations based on its 90 years of brewing technology, the Korea Times reported on April 5.
Its lineup of beer products varies from its signature item Hite beer and the country's first all-malt Max beer, to the country's first sparkling beer, FiLite.
HiteJinro was the first local brewery to attach a thermometer to its beer labels in 1995 to provide guidance to customers on optimal serving conditions. Three years later, it introduced a real-name production system and invented new brewing technology to manage beer temperature.
It launched its latest lager brand Terra three years ago with an ambition to capture the best-selling beer title.
The lager sold over 1.65 billion bottles in two years since its introduction, which the brewery breaks down as 26 beers sold every second, making it the fastest-selling beer here.
In fact, it sold 1 million boxes in the shortest period of any beer here ― 100 million bottles in 100 days and 680 million bottles in one year.
The explosive popularity of Terra led to 105 percent sales growth in 2020 year-on-year. This is a significant result considering that the alcoholic beverage market here has experienced

India: On-trade beer sales down 11.7% in last quarter of 2020
|
Despite the Indian government’s efforts to the drive the economic activity, people remain reluctant to travel and dine-out, driving down the ‘on-trade’ volumes of beverages, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
GlobalData’s report, ‘India Beverages Consumption Trends and Forecasts Tracker, Q4 2020 (Dairy and Soy Drinks, Alcoholic Drinks, Soft Drinks and Hot Drinks)’ reveals that ‘dairy & soy drinks & milk alternatives’ sector was the only one to see its volumes rise in Q4 2020, led by strong growth in fermented milk, flavored milk and white milk categories.
Soft drink volumes posted a sharp decline of 24.1% in Q4 2020 over the same quarter of the previous year with several categories registering double digit declines, even as enhanced water grew by 4.7%. Bulk/HOD water also fell by 32.5% in the same period.
Biswarup Bose, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, says: “The fall in the tourism industry in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic led lockdowns and travel restrictions coupled with consumer reluctance to travel even after the easing of restrictions have contributed to the strong reductions in the ‘on-trade’ channels.”
Alcoholic drinks also suffered due to the lack of enthusiasm among the consumers to step-out and socialize, with the volumes declining by 7.7%

Australia: Brewers want government to slash beer tax for pubs and clubs
|
Australian brewers want the federal government to slash the beer tax for pubs and clubs to help lift the hospitality sector out of its COVID-19 hangover, 7NEWS.com.au reported on April .
In a submission for next month's federal budget, the Brewers Association of Australia pleads its case for a 50 per cent reduction in the excise rate on draught beer.
The peak industry body says small to medium pubs that buy about 15 kegs a week would save A$465 a week in beer tax under the proposal, allowing businesses to pour more money into promotions or pay down debt.
John Preston, chief executive of the group that represents major Australian brewers Carlton & United Breweries, and Lion and Coopers, argues a significant cut would help venues cope with future lockdowns and ongoing capacity limits.
"A 50 per cent reduction in the excise rate on draught beer would deliver a massive boost to hospitality business owners at a relatively small cost to the government," he said on Wednesday.
"Beer anchors pubs and clubs, and these businesses need a break."
Under its modelling, the Brewers Association says a 50 per cent reduction would cost the federal treasury A$150 million from its annual beer tax revenue of A$2.5 billion.

Canada: Molson Coors reaches agreement with locked-out workers at Toronto brewery
|
Workers at one of Molson’s biggest breweries in the country will be heading back to work on April 6, after ratifying a contract agreement with the company to end a six-week lockout, The Standard reported.
Members of the Canadian Union of Brewery and General Workers, Local 325, were locked out of the Toronto brewery on Carlingview Drive on Feb. 20.
Local 325 members approved the deal 149-117 in voting that took place Saturday, April 3 and Sunday, April 4, according to sources familiar with the vote who weren’t officially authorized to speak publicly about the deal. Union leadership had recommended approval of the deal, which was reached on April 1.
Molson Coors Canada CEO Fred Landtmeters said in an emailed statement the company was “excited” to have reached an agreement.
“Molson Coors has a long history of providing well-paying jobs that help our employees support themselves and their families and we are excited to have reached an agreement with Local 325 that is both fair to employees and keeps our brewery competitive in a changing market,” Landtmeters said.
Local 325 president Gaurav Sharma didn’t respond to requests for comment.
The new collective agreement approved by the union members includes many of the same contentious provisions that

Nigeria: Shares of Guinness Nigeria Plc up 47.07% in March
|
Shares of Guinness Nigeria Plc in March increased by a whopping 47.07% following sustained buying pressures in the company shares, the Nairametrics reported on April 5.
This move led to a total of N23.8 billion increase in the market capitalization of the brewing company in March.
Data tracked on the Nigerian Stock Exchange website revealed that the market capitalization of Guinness Nigeria Plc rose from N50.5 billion on the 26th of February to N74.3 billion on the 31st of March.
The impressive 47.07% increase in the share price of Guinness was driven by investors buying interest in the shares of the brewer.
The buying interest (driven by the expectation of a sustained reopening of the on-trade channel as restaurants and bars reopen) has seen the shares of the company gain about 78% year-to-date.
The NSE Consumer Goods Index, an investable benchmark designed to track the performance of consumer goods companies like Guinness, depreciated by 3.71% in March following sustained sell down in the shares of listed consumer goods companies on the NSE.
The bearish performance of the index was driven by the decline in the shares of NNFM, Champion Breweries, PZ, NB, Dangote Sugar, and eight others; while shares of Guinness Nigeria Plc and Vitafoam returned

South Africa: Alcohol industry associations complain about ban on off-site consumption trade over the Easter weekend
|
The South African alcohol industry associations have complained about the government's ban on off-site consumption trade over the Easter weekend saying it would once more, cause irreparable damage to the sector, IOL reported on April 4.
Sibani Mngadi, chairperson of the South African Liquor Brandowners Association, said the alcohol industry and its value chain had been devastated by three bans over the past 12 months, totalling 19 weeks of lost days of trade.
Mngadi said they had repeatedly stated that any further bans would cause irreversible damage to small- and medium-sized businesses and that they would be unlikely to survive.
“The cumulative impact of the last three alcohol bans led to a loss in sales revenue of R36.3 billion, putting 200 200 jobs at risk in the nation's informal and formal economy, and R29bn in tax revenue loss for the government”.
Mngadi said while the decision to keep the on-site consumption trading environment open under the licence conditions and limitations of the curfew was welcomed over Easter, with taverns, bars, restaurants playing a critical part of the tourism business which needed assistance to recover.
“We are, however, deeply disappointed with the decision to restrict off-site consumption trade over the weekend and we do not understand

Australia: Barley exports successfully diverted into other markets following China ban
|
Australia’s rural exports rose by A$261 million in February, with cereal grains leading the way despite the ongoing trade tensions with China, the Farm Weekly reported on April 6.
The bumper winter crop was the big driver behind the monthly haul of A$4.22 billion, the seven per cent month-on-month increase.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade revealed in the recent Senate estimates that the impact of the Chinese tariff on Australian barley - which effectively closed the market - had been offset by new markets in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Thailand.
"Barley is actually an interesting story, because while exports [to China] have been negligible since May 2020, our exports to the rest of the world have actually increased partly because we had bumper crops," DFAT chief economist Jenny Gordon said.
"I know some of my colleagues are very active in continuing to seek market access for barley, malting and feed barley."
Labor senator Penny Wong grilled the DFAT officials about how much damage the Chinese barley tariff had inflected to farmers and the national economy.
"The barley has been successfully diverted into other markets," Dr Gordon said.
"The value of barley exported was A$250 million in January 2021, which was sort of
