USA: Constellation Brands reports decreased Q4 earnings per share, net income

Constellation Brands, Inc. reported fourth quarter comparable basis earnings per share of $1.82 compared to $2.06, prior year. Excluding Canopy, comparable earnings per share was $1.93, down 11%.
On average, 17 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report profit per share of $1.55, for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Fourth quarter net income attributable to CBI declined to $382.9 million from $398.4 million, prior year. Earnings per class A common stock was $1.95 compared to $2.04.
Fourth quarter net sales were $1.95 billion, up 3% from previous year. Analysts expected revenue of $1.87 billion, for the quarter.
For fiscal 2022, the company expects reported EPS of $6.90 - $7.20; and comparable basis EPS, excluding Canopy, of $9.95 - $10.25.
On April 7, Constellation's board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.76 per share of class A common stock and $0.69 per share of class B common stock.

USA: Beer sales will climb even further this year – Constellation Brands
|
Beer sales, already elevated in 2020 as consumers drank at home, will climb even further this year, says the maker of Modelo and Corona, Bloomberg reported on April 8.
Constellation Brands Inc. says net sales for beer will grow 7% to 9% this fiscal year. That segment includes names like Modelo Especial, which became the third best-selling beer in the U.S. last year, as well as new products like Corona Hard Seltzer, whose unfortunate name connection to the coronavirus isn’t hurting sales. In the year that just ended, the company’s net beer sales were up 8%.
The growth in beer demand comes even as so called on-premise drinking venues like bars, restaurants and events saw demand halved by the coronavirus, said Constellation, which on Thursday reported fourth-quarter sales that beat estimates. But those drops were more than offset by beer demand at home.
Meanwhile, wine and spirits sales are expected to see a net sales decline of 22% to 24% this year. Constellation has been divesting brands in this category, including selling some of its wines to E. & J. Gallo Winery in early 2021.

Constellation Brands has nearly doubled in value over the past year as the prospects for bars and restaurants fully reopening improve and the potential for social gathering this year increases. But one Wall Street analyst believes the stock of the beer, wine, and spirits distributor isn't done rising just yet, Nasdaq reported on April 5.
Jefferies analyst Kevin Grundy says Constellation's beer portfolio, which comprises the still fast-growing Corona and Modelo family of beers, remains one of the best in consumer staples.
Not only did Grundy keep his buy rating on the stock, but he also raised his price target from $276 per share to $300, a 9% increase -- and a 30% increase from where Constellation currently trades.
The pandemic brought about a once-in-a-lifetime challenge to the alcoholic beverage distributor. While beer, wine, and spirits are often seen as recession-proof since people will drink regardless of the economic climate, the coronavirus outbreak closed bars, restaurants, and cafes, which are Constellation's primary sales outlets.
It also didn't help that travel and tourism were crushed as well, since those provide channels for special-occasion drinking.

USA, OH: Lebanon Brewing Company aiming at spring 2022 opening
|
The Lebanon fire station on West Silver Street is set to be decommissioned later this year. In its place, a first for the city is coming: a craft brewery, WCPO reported on April 5.
"The whole driveway out front will be leveled," said Nathan Ridgley, operations manager of the Lebanon Brewing Company. "We'll have some kind of coverage out here. Maybe a fence."
The new venue will feature 2,000 square feet of outdoor patio space and a 3,000 square-foot taproom with 20 beers, seltzers and sodas on tap. Ridgley, who grew up in Lebanon, is looking to serve up something fresh to the neighborhood.
“People are tired of driving to other local cities to get the same local entertainment value,” he said. “I think there's a lot of opportunity here to create that locally."
The town's only craft brewery will open its doors in spring 2022. With its location in the designated outdoor refreshment area, and with plans for an on-site food partner, Ridgley is expecting big turnouts when the Lebanon Brewing Company opens.

USA, SC: New Realm Brewing Company announces opening of new facility on Daniel Island in Charleston
|
New Realm Brewing Company recently announced the opening of an 11,000 square-foot facility on Daniel Island in Charleston with an on-site brewery, restaurant, outdoor patio, intimate music venue and dedicated private event spaces. The site, currently occupied by Dockery’s, will be re-branded New Realm in May and is located at 880 Island Park Drive, the Savannah Business Journal reported on April 9.
Much like the New Realm’s flagship Atlanta location, the Daniel Island facility will feature the company’s handcrafted lineup of award-winning craft beers and limited specialty releases, some available only on Daniel Island. At the helm of the brewery will be New Realm’s brewmaster Mitch Steele, who is recognized as one of the craft beer industry’s best brewers and has helped drive brewing industry innovation and the IPA market for several decades.

One short month after Moustache Brewing Company closed the doors of its Riverhead tasting room, the space is reopening anew as the home base of Long Island brew master Rob Raffa’s popular, nomadic brewing company übergeek. The grand opening was April 2 with festivities lasting through April 11, the Long Island Press reported on April 6.
From home brewer to Moustache’s head brewer to founder of übergeek Brewing Company in under a decade, Raffa has quickly cemented himself in the Long Island beer scene, with a loyal fanbase and many connections both up-island and on the East End.
“We [übergeek] were able to build our entire network, so to speak, from word of mouth from selling wholesale,” Raffa says, noting that many of his customers hail from the Islip-Lindenhurst area. “I had a slight reputation myself before even starting just from making quality beer at Moustache, and I have a lot of friends, brewers and beer distributor owners, who were willing to try my product and push it out to market. USA, MA: Husband and wife quickly progressing with establishing Drawing Board Brewing Co. in Florence

The husband and wife brewing team of Corey and Tonka Lynch are quickly progressing with plans to establish their new brewery, Drawing Board Brewing Co., at the former Brew Practitioners site on Main Street in Florence, the Reminder Publications reported on April 6.
Corey told Reminder Publishing the two identified Florence as a landing spot due in large part to the community environment and potential for partnerships within the existing economy.
“We think Florence is a really cool community that has a lot of cool stuff going on,” he said. “There’s some very nice local businesses we’ve already come to know that we can foresee some future collaborations with.”
He added the timing of the former brewery’s move to Agawam earlier this year was perfect.
“Commercial space is incredibly limited right now,” Corey explained. “This space became available and there is enough space here to do what we want to do.”
Both seasoned homebrewers, Corey is the self-described “one with the boring science background” while Tonka, who “can hit any recipe out of the park,” has a flair for the artistic.

USA, ME: Olive Pit Brewing Co. to become Lisbon’s first brewery later this year
|
Lisbon will get its first brewery later this year when Olive Pit Brewing Co. opens, joining an explosion of craft beer breweries in Maine in recent years, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported on April 8.
Christy Cain, who lives in Lisbon with her wife, closed on April 7 on the 7,850-square-foot building at 16 Main St. Three existing second-story apartments will remain and Cain will create a brewhouse and tasting room in the former salon and spa space on the first floor.
Cain said she will brew beer that appeals to her taste, and said women often experience bitter flavors more acutely than men.
In fact, a 2017 Yale School of Medicine study found that 35% of women — compared to 15% of men — are so-called “supertasters” whose sense of taste is augmented by a larger number of taste buds.
Cain said she and her wife had difficulty finding beers they like and aren’t fans of the bitter beers Maine is known for.
“So I sent myself to brewing school, and learned how to do it, and got a diploma in brewing science, and bought a building,” Cain said.
Cain plans to cater to this niche and cater to the growing female beer consumer.

UK: Carling remains best-selling lager in the UK
|
UK’s pubs have been closed for months due to the national lockdown, but it is not long before people can enjoy a cold pint in a beer garden.
The Morning Advertiser revealed that Carling has been the best-selling lager for some years, as shown by CGA data.
Foster’s took the second spot, whilst Carlsberg was found to be the third most popular lager in the country, as reported by The Morning Advertiser.
Last year was particularly difficult for the hospitality industry due to the forced closures as a result of national lockdowns.
Around 6,358,309 hectolitres of lager were sold in pubs across the UK last year, which has fallen from the 10,144,183 hectolitres of lager sold in 2019, according to CGA figures.
Carling made up 1,722,739 hl of the lager that was sold across the country in the year up to October 2020. This amount of lager brought in £989.5 million to UK pubs.
Around 1,023,530 hl of Foster’s was sold across the country, whilst approximately 574,656 hl of Carlsberg was sold in pubs.
The reopening of beer gardens across the country will be welcomed by many Brits, with several pubs booked up for weeks and months in advance.

South Africa: South African Breweries to launch a new empowerment scheme
|
Beermaker South African Breweries (SAB) has announced that its broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) scheme SAB Zenzele, will be replaced by the new 'Zenzele Kabili', once it reaches maturity in May, the Engineering News reported on April 7.
SAB Zenzele, which was launched in 2010, will have reached a maturation value of R9.7 billion in May, and shareholders who invested R100 at the scheme’s inception, will receive a R77 518 pre-tax pay out when it unwinds next month.
The new scheme will give taverners, bottle store owners, retailers and SAB employees an opportunity to own stakes in the world's largest beermaker.
“The company is offering SAB Zenzele Retailer Shareholders the opportunity to reinvest a portion of their remaining proceeds into a replacement B-BBEE ownership transaction through the SAB Zenzele Kabili scheme that will own R5.4 billion worth of AB InBev Shares,” said SAB in a statement.
Zenzele Kabili shareholders will collectively own R5.4 billion of the beermaker’s Belgium based parent, AB InBev and will be listed on the JSE’s B-BBEE segment to open up ownership to other B-BBEE investors including SAB employees.

India: B9 Beverages to launch a slew of new beers as craft beer market picks pace

B9 Beverages, that makes the Bira 91 brand of beer in India, is set to launch a slew of new beers in the market apart from the re-launch of some of its existing variants, as competition in the craft brews space picks pace, livemint.com reported on April 7.
Some of the launches planned last year were delayed due to Covid-19 led disruptions.
As part of the new launches, the company will release limited edition batches of its beers brewed at its Limited Release Taproom that opened up in Bengaluru last year.
The taproom works as a physical set-up where the company experiments with new beers every week such as—New England IPA, Farmhhouse Ale, Raspberry Sour (ale), to name a few. A few of these, which find favour with consumers, will be rolled out in select markets in packaged formats later this year.
“We will launch more products this fiscal than we did in the last three-to-four years combined. Japan: Asahi Breweries launches sales of new version of Super Dry in mug-cans
|
A major brewery in Japan has launched a beer can with a fully opening top, making it feel like you're guzzling your suds from a beer mug, The Mainichi Shimbun reported on April 7.
Asahi Breweries Ltd. launched initial sales of the new version of the popular "Super Dry" brand at convenience stores on April 6. Sales at other outlets are set to start on April 20.
The company took four years to develop the mug-can under the concept: "At home, consumers can feel like they are drinking draft beer from a mug served at a bar." Special coating inside the can produces fine foam. As the top of the can comes off entirely, the brewer said it's easy to take in the aroma, and the beer can be enjoyed like it just came from the tap.
The brand manager at the company's beer marketing department, which developed the new can, told The Mainichi Shimbun, "Though there were various high hurdles to overcome, such as developing a top that doesn't cut a person's hands or mouth, and creating foam similar to draft beer served at bars, we've worked as one to develop it. We want customers to be excited about the draft beer cans."
