USA, NY: Mixed Breed Brewing to open this weekend in Guilderland
|
A new brewery and taproom called Mixed Breed Brewing opens this weekend at 457 Route 146 in Guilderland Center, at the Park Guilderland Plaza, the Albany Times Union reported on April 13.
The Saturday, April 17 grand-opening event sold out all tickets for each of its three time slots weeks ago, but Mixed Breed beers will still be available in cans for takeout customers. Regular hours, starting Sunday, are 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; hours may expand to include Wednesdays if warranted by demand.
Opening weekend will feature six Mixed Breed beers on draft. The taproom is licensed to also carry New York-made cider and spirits, and I’m told the plan is to add additional house beers and outside beverages in the coming weeks. Food will always be available, usually from an on-site food truck and also from a deli in the same shopping plaza. Management hopes to make delivery arrangements with nearby restaurants as well.

USA, ME: Mast Landing Brewing Co. planning pilot brewing facility in Freeport
|
Mast Landing Brewing Co., based in Westbrook, plans to open a large tasting room and pilot brewing facility in Freeport this summer, the Press Herald reported on April 13.
The 11,000-square-foot space in the Freeport Crossing shopping mall will have two floors and a spacious outdoor seating area. The second floor can be used as a 4,000-square-foot space for private events. The company has not yet released an exact opening date.
Mast Landing will use the on-site brewing facility to develop small-batch beers that will be sold exclusively at the Freeport location, along with some of the brewery’s flagship beers.
Mast Landing, founded in 2016, has a tasting room and production facility in Westbrook. In 2019 the Brewers Association named it one of the fastest-growing craft breweries in America.

USA, MA: Things coming to a head at Tree House Brewing Company’s new Sandwich location
|
Things are coming to a head at the Tree House Brewing Company's soon-to-open Sandwich location, the Cape Cod Times reported on April 14.
Damien Lee Goudrew, one of the founders of the Charlton-based company and listed manager of the site, is expected to appear before the Sandwich Board of Selectmen on April 15 for approval of a Farmer Series Pouring Permit and Entertainment License.
All other licensing requirements for the site have been approved by the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.
The company bought 98 Town Neck Road and the adjoining property at 3 Freeman Ave. through Landreau Realty, LLC for $1.275 million on Nov. 12.
On Nov. 19, the same real estate company bought 5 Freeman Ave., the closest beach house adjoining the property, for a little over $1 million.
The brewery taproom is expected to open by summer, pending the state of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the company’s website.
The facility will include a taproom with resident food trucks and Tree House beers to go as part of an On The Fly distribution service. The website says the company intends to open the facility "sooner" as an On The Fly location, or curbside pick-up of beer cans.

USA, NC: Big Pillow Brewing now open for business in Hot Springs
|
While Asheville is known as Beer City and seemingly has a brewery around every corner, Madison County does not have as many places to sit down and sip a brew. Now though, residents have another spot where they can grab a beer, as Big Pillow Brewing is open for business in Hot Springs, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported on April 13.
Owners Amy Rubin and Chris Donochod named the brewery after a rapid on the French Broad River.
Donochod, who worked as a raft guide on the river in the 1990s, said the couple have longstanding connections to Hot Springs.
"As the river is what brought us to Hot Springs, we wanted the name to reflect our passion for whitewater and the French Broad river," he said. "I've always been a fan of Hot Springs. I continued to come back. I'm one of the co-founders of the French Broad River Festival. We started that in 1998, and that always kept me coming back to town every year."
According to Donochod, Madison residents and tourists alike have taken notice of the new downtown business, which features a large outdoor beer garden space.

USA, KY: Gallant Fox Brewing ready to open its second brewery in Mount Washington

Almost one year since first opening its doors to the Clifton neighborhood in Louisville, KY, Gallant Fox Brewing is ready to open a second brewery and taproom location in Mount Washington, KY, in 2021. Gallant Fox Mt. Washington will be Bullitt County’s first brewery, Brewbound reported on April 15.
“We are so humbled by the continued support of the Clifton neighborhood and the broader Louisville community in general,” said Roger Huff, Gallant Fox co-owner. “It has truly been overwhelming. When we began discussing a second location late last year, we knew we wanted to bring our great atmosphere and our great Kentucky brewed beer to a brand-new community. USA: Brewers Association reports almost 70% revenue decline in 2020
|
The Brewers Association said its revenues fell by almost 70% between the end of 2019 and the end of 2020, The Daily Camera reported on April 14.
In its annual report, the Boulder-based trade association said it generated revenues of just more than $9.73 million in 2020 versus $27.76 million in the year prior, and had a net loss of about $3.58 million.
The group also saw its total assets fall 20.9%, from $36.59 million at the end of 2019 to $28.94 million at the close of 2020.
Event revenues were the hardest-hit section of the BA’s earnings last year as the pandemic shut down most public gatherings, including the Great American Beer Festival. Its event-related revenues were $16.17 million in 2019, but plummeted to just $1.7 million in 2020.
The BA laid off almost a quarter of its employees last spring in anticipation of a difficult year for craft brewing in general. That sector of the brewing industry saw production volumes drop by 9% year-over-year as in-person tap sales plummeted from shutdowns and fear of COVID spread, along with challenges in acquiring resources to send canned beer to retailers.

Ukraine: Barley export prices drop to five-month lows
|
Ukrainian barley export prices have dropped to five-month lows owing to limited demand, analysts at consultancy APK-Inform said on April 13.
Bid prices for Ukrainian-origin barley have fallen by $15 a tonne this month to $220-$230 a tonne CPT (carriage pain to) Black Sea as of April 13, they said in a report.
APK-Inform said that a global downward trend had affected Ukrainian wheat and corn export prices.
Ukraine is among the world's leading grain exporters and plans to supply more than 45 million tonnes to foreign markets in the 2020/21 season from July to June.
As of April 12 it had exported 36.5 million tonnes, including 14.5 million tonnes of wheat, 4.1 million tonnes of barley and 17.3 million tonnes of corn, government data showed.

Brewing giant Heineken has announced plans to decarbonise its production processes by 2030 and its full value chain by 2040, The Drinks Report said on April 16.
As part of its push towards carbon neutrality, Heineken said it would be working to improving energy efficiency and increasing its use of renewable energy at its sites.
It also hopes it reduce carbon emissions from its value chain by 30 per cent (compared with 2018 levels) in the next nine years, ahead of the full decarbonisation target date of 2040.
The plans were announced in the company's Brew a Better World initiative and are a key part of its EverGreen 'balanced growth' strategy.
Dolf van den Brink, Heineken's CEO and chairman of the executive board, said the company was bringing foward the planned decarbonisation date for its production sites to bring it in line with the goals set in the Paris Agreement on climate change.
He continued: "A large part of our overall carbon footprint beyond production comes from agriculture, packaging, distribution and cooling. This means we will work in close partnership with our suppliers and partners to reach our ambitious goal of a carbon-neutral value chain by 2040.

More than 200 pubs in Scotland have been “lost forever” and over 210 million pints have been left unsold as a result of the covid pandemic in the biggest crisis ever to hit hospitality, industry leaders have told MPs, the Scottish Daily Record reported on April 15.
Scottish pubs have lost up to £820 million in beer sales, the equivalent of over 210 million pints, since the start of the pandemic last year, with industry leaders concerned that the hospitality sector may not fully recover.
MPs on the Commons Scottish Affairs committee heard from representatives of the pub, hotel and restaurant industries about concerns how easing of restrictions will continue to impact the sector.
Paul Togneri, of the Scottish Beer & Pub Association, said more than 200 pubs out of around 4,500 in Scotland had been “lost forever” as a result of the crisis.
He said: “The pandemic has been the biggest crisis ever to hit the beer and pub industry and the impacts are going to be long-lasting.
“Prior to the pandemic there was roughly 4,500 pubs in Scotland and 130 breweries contributing around £1.66 billion to the economy every year, and paying almost £800 million in wages.”

Cambodia: Alcohol sales continue despite ban
|
Phnom Penh City Hall’s announcement banning the sale of alcohol has led to a prohibition era-style culture of speakeasies and underground trafficking, the Khmer Times reported on April 14.
The Kingdom of Cambodia on April 13 announced that it would extend its curfew for another two weeks after an additional three people succumbed to Covid – bringing the number of fatalities to 33.
Municipal authorities said that it had banned the sale of alcohol two days before Khmer New Year festivities were set to begin because it had traced infections to people drinking together, an announcement read. On April 13, Kandal province joined the capital in the bans.
However, strolling through Phnom Penh and scrolling through Facebook reveals that the sale of alcohol remains unabated.
“Good afternoon, sure we can deliver until 7 pm. Let us know what you need, your delivery address and phone number, preferred payment method (ABA or cash on delivery),” one merchant said on Facebook Messenger just seconds after Khmer Times enquired if they would deliver alcohol.
