Canada: Barley exports forecast for 2020-21 up by 50 thousand tonnes from last month
|
For 2020-21, the forecast for total Canadian barley exports (raw barley grain and grain equivalent of malt) is pegged at 3.75 million tonnes (Mt), up by 50 thousand tonnes (Kt) from last month, based on the stable and robust export of raw barley grain, offsetting slower exports of barley malt. Total exports are expected to be 23% higher than last year, the highest since 2007-08, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their April report.
Statistics Canada (STC) reported that exports of raw barley grain for the first seven months of the crop year increased by 68%, largely due to strong demand from China, although exports to the US and Japan fell. Exports of barley products decreased by 10%, largely due to weakening of demand from the US and Japan, although exports to Mexico, South Korea and Colombia increased.
Imports of barley are expected to increase sharply from last year to 180 Kt, as strong exports and
domestic feed consumption have tightened domestic barley supply and, therefore, led barley imports to surge. Most of the increase in imported barley was shipped from the US to Alberta.
Canada’s total domestic barley use is projected to increase by 5% to 7.627 Mt,

USA, ID: Chalice Brewing now open in Coeur d’Alene
|
A craft beer industry veteran has achieved a longtime goal of opening his own brewery, The Spokesman-Review reported on April 17
Brian Engdahl opened Chalice Brewing on Friday, April 16 at 413 E. Sherman Ave. in downtown Coeur d’Alene.
Chalice Brewing offers walk-up and growler sales with plans to expand to a full-service brewpub by summer, Engdahl said.
Engdahl will use Chalice Brewing’s three-barrel system to refine traditional and historical beer styles. He plans to incorporate locally sourced ingredients for small-batch brews.
“We are a tiny little brewery, so we have the luxury of doing one-offs that you might not do at a larger scale,” Engdahl said. “We plan to do a little bit of everything.”
Chalice Brewing’s full bar area, when complete, will feature 14 taps of various beer styles, some of which will be from regional breweries, Engdahl said.
Engdahl is planning to produce cider and mead in the future, with a “focus on resurrecting forgotten fermentations.”
“I’m excited to potentially get some of those out because I feel like mead is a forgotten style of beverage,” he said.
Engdahl brings years of craft-brewing experience to Coeur d’Alene as former head brewer of Ancestry Brewing in Tualatin, Oregon. He also worked at Widmer Brothers’ large-scale production

Canada, BC: Jordan River Brewing Company planning a brewery in Jordan River
|
A micro brewery is eyed to be on tap in Jordan River, the Saanich News reported on April 17.
Jordan River Brewing Company is envisioning to build a brewery along Highway 14 on a site owned by Totangi Properties.
The aim of the business is to brew beer for wholesale and retail trade and offer tastings on-site. The business proposal also includes offering food and non-alcoholic drinks on the premises.
The plan is in preliminary stages, as the company still has to move through some hoops as rezoning of the proposed site is required. The application is at the ‘referral stage’ in the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area, and the rezoning process typically takes months.
Should the business plan prove viable in the community, the company says it would design the brewery to fit in with the natural surroundings and rural area.
“We believe that the Jordan River area will benefit from increased services for both the local residents and visitors to the area,” states the company website. “Our hope is that the Jordan River Brewing Company will become a new gathering place for the community, creating jobs, promoting tourism, and bolstering additional economic interest and community pride.”
If approved, it would join the roster of

USA, NC: D9 Brewing opens 2 new locations in North Carolina
|
D9 Brewing Uptown Charlotte is now open in the Savoy apartment community on Stonewall Street, the Charlotte Observer reported on April 20.
“From the design and decor to the beer selections on tap, fans of D9 will see something different from our Cornelius location but can still expect the same outside the box thinking with our beer flavors and offerings,” said Carli Smith, D9’s Charlotte-area head brewer.
The brewery features an indoor lounge, as well as an outdoor concert pavilion and 5,000-square-foot beer garden still undergoing construction. Ciders and wines from partner brands will also be available.
D9 is also opening its third location this weekend in Hendersonville (2 hours from Charlotte) — a Main Street microbrewery, taproom and coffee shop — and the CBV Brewery + Taproom in Newton (an hour from Charlotte), where guests can sip on D9 beer and craft beverages from Community Brewing Ventures in an old firehouse.

USA, NY: Non Sequitur Beer Project eyes summer opening in Bushwick
|
The summer of 2021 will bring warm weather, vaccinations and also the opening of a new brewery and taproom in Bushwick. The new space, which will be located at 8 Wilson Avenue, is being opened by Non Sequitur Beer Project, bushwickdaily.com reported on April 20.
Non Sequitur, known by Brooklyn craft beer buffs for its double IPAs, has been around since October of 2019. Until recently, the company never planned to open a permanent location. For the past year and a half, Non Sequitur has been brewing at other breweries’ facilities and bringing them to events and selling in unconventional spaces like museums and movie theaters.
When the COVID pandemic hit, those events ceased to exist tooand Non Sequitur had to develop a new plan to deliver its beers to its growing customer base.
“Once COVID happened and we saw how much the brand was picking up, we really started to feel this need and desire to open a physical location and a taproom so that we could have a place that our fans and people who love our beer could actually interact with us, interact with the company and learn more about what we’re doing,” said Simone Schroeder, co-founder of Non

UK: Molson Coors’ historic Burtonwood Brewery put up for sale
|
Molson Coors’ historic Burtonwood Brewery has been put up for sale ahead of the site’s planned closure, The Warrington Guardian reported on April 18.
The brewing giant announced last year that it would be pulling out of the Bold Lane site, which is shared with the Thomas Hardy Burtonwood bottling plant.
It is expected that the premises will be closed by the end of September this year, putting 25 jobs at risk.
Now the 9.64-acre brewery has been brought to the market as a going concern by commercial real estate agents Colliers International.
Burtonwood Brewery is equipped with five brewing lines, 33 fermenter vessels, a borehole water source, automated kegging line, filter house, cold storage and specialist draining facilities.
It also benefits from multiple heat sources and includes office space and staff canteen facilities.
Peter Vass, associate director at Colliers, said: “The Burtonwood Brewery is an ideal site because everything is already up and running – meaning new tenants can quickly move in, escalate their production and get out to market in the north and north west at a minimum expense.”
Thomas Hardy Burtonwood sold its brewery to Molson Coors in 2015, but its remaining operations on the shared site will be unaffected by the move.

Ukraine: Farmers seed 20% of total expected spring grains area
|
All Ukrainian regions have started this year's spring grain sowing campaign, seeding a total of 1.5 million hectares of wheat, barley, peas and oats as of April 15, or 20% of the expected area, economy ministry data showed on April 17.
The campaign started a few weeks late due to lingering cold weather in most of the country.
The overall grain area is likely to total 15.5 million hectares this year, including 7.6 million hectares of spring grains, the ministry has said.
Farms have sown 1.06 million hectares of barley, 177,200 hectares of peas, 124,160 hectares of wheat and 134,640 hectares of oats as of April 15.
The spring sowing area is expected to include 1.388 million hectares of barley, 176,600 hectares of wheat, 5.327 million hectares of corn, 194,050 hectares of oats and 235,400 hectares of peas.
State weather forecasters said last month around 98% of Ukrainian winter wheat crops and 100% of winter barley were in good condition.
The favourable weather could help farmers increase the grain crop to 75 million tonnes this year from 65 million in 2020.
The ministry said farms had also started the 2021 sunflower sowing campaign, with the first seeding of 390,050 hectares. They have also sown 73,970 hectares of

South Korea: Oriental Brewery begins sale of revamped All New Cass beer nationwide
|
South Korea’s largest brewer, Oriental Brewery, has begun the sale of its newly revamped flagship beer All New Cass nationwide, The Korea Herald reported on April 19.
Following a ceremony at its Cheongju plant on April 18, the beer - bottled in clear glass - will hit the shelves at convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants and entertainment venues sometime late this month, the company said.
In March, OB unveiled the new Cass, ditching the brand’s famous brown bottle in a dramatic change of appearance, hoping to continue its lead in the market.
OB accounted for some 52 percent of Korea’s home beer market last year, according to Nielsen Korea, with its flagship beer Cass Fresh alone accounting for some 40 percent.
The company said the new package reflects the “simplicity” and “transparency” that consumers seek nowadays and better delivers the beer’s fresh and clean taste visually.
While the 27-year-old signature recipe remains unchanged, the new Cass was given an upgrade in flavor thanks to the use of high-quality hops and a balancing of the perfect malt ratio, the brewery said.
“We will be with the general public through the ups and downs this year and retain our position as the country’s top beer,” one OB official said.

Uganda: MPs ask government to halt beer production in an attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19
|
MPs have asked the Uganda government to halt production of beer if it is to effectively enforce closure of bars, KFM reported on April 21.
Kaberamaido County MP, Veronica Elagu has questioned why the government insists on closure of bars yet beer companies are manufacturing and transporting their products across the country.
She says the continued operation of beer companies contradicts the regulations put in place by Ministry of Health to contain the spread of COVID-19 because the continued beer supply has given bar owner’s leeway to keep their facilities open.
Elagu was speaking during a meeting between Parliament’s National Economy Committee and ministry officials in which they discussed a Shs45bn loan request from the World Bank to fund COVID activities.
Health minister Ruth Aceng says they cannot stop businesses that bring in revenue to the national economy.
