Brewery news USA: Boston Beer reports increase in Q1 net revenue, shipments
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. reported first quarter 2021 net revenue of $545.1 million, an increase of $214.5 million or 64.9% from the same period last year, mainly due to an increase in shipments of 60.1%, PRNewswire reported on April 22.

Net income for the first quarter was $65.6 million, an increase of $47.3 million or 259.6% from the same period last year.

Earnings per diluted share were $5.26, an increase of $3.77 per diluted share, or 253.0% from the first quarter of 2020. This increase was primarily due to increased net revenue, partially offset by increases in operating expenses.

In the first quarter of 2020, the company recorded pre-tax COVID-19 related reductions in net revenue and increases in costs that totaled $10.0 million or $0.60 per diluted share.

In the first quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2020, the company recorded a tax benefit of $0.69 per diluted share and $0.17 per diluted share, respectively, resulting from the Accounting Standard "Employee Share-Based Payment Accounting" ("ASU 2016-09").

Jim Koch, Chairman and Founder of the company, commented, "As the world slowly reopens and the COVID-19 pandemic winds down, our primary focus continues to be on operating our breweries and our ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Saugatuck Brewing Co. buying Creston Brewery in Grand Rapids
Saugatuck Brewing Co. announced on April 22 that it’s buying Creston Brewery in Grand Rapids, mlive.com reported.

In a news release, Saugatuck Brewing Co. said the sale is dependent upon approval from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.

“We anticipate a smooth and timely approval from the MLCC and look forward to opening back up to the community as soon as possible,” said Robert Antor, creative content director at Saugatuck Brewing, said in a statement.

“COVID-19 obviously had devastating effects on the restaurant and brewery industry in Michigan, and it’s a tragedy that an up-and-coming brewery such as Creston had to permanently close its doors due to the impact. With this acquisition we really hope to rekindle the community magic that Creston radiated and help it once again become a staple of the Grand Rapids area.”

Creston will maintain its name as well as its “charming and welcoming neighborhood atmosphere,” according to a press release. The brewery, once it reopens, will offer “former Creston mainstays along with current and seasonal releases from Saugatuck.”

Creston Brewery, located at 1504 Plainfield Ave. NE, has been closed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Details on the terms of the sale were not included in the press release.

Brewery news USA, NY: Copper Leaf Brewing Company ready to open its doors
A journey five years in the making will reach its conclusion as Copper Leaf Brewing Company finally opens its doors, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on April 22.

It certainly wasn't how they planned it, but Copper Leaf co-owners Bryan Meyer, Jason Meyer, and Clay Killian are just relieved they've finally made it to this point.

The idea for Copper Leaf, 50 State St. in the village of Pittsford's Northfield Common development, was hatched in 2016. The brewery is just off Schoen Place and sits on the north side of the Erie Canal. Fits and starts followed but they're finally here.

"It's been difficult not to swing the door open, because we've been dying to get people in here for the longest," Killian said. "It's a huge relief, for sure."

The brewery, which was originally slated to be named Hawley Brewing Company after one of the original families in the area and also an early proponent of canal construction, ran into an issue many breweries face: The name was already in use by a winery. So that required a pivot.

When the famous Pittsford copper beech tree was taken down in 2018, it presented a perfect opportunity for the fledgling brewery. The tree, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Iron Island Brewery coming to Buffalo’s Lovejoy District this summer
Buffalo is known as a beer city and it will have another brewery to have a pint in coming up later this summer, wyrk.com reported on April 22.

Carousel Development Inc. submitted a plan to open a brewery in the Lovejoy District.

The project calls for converting an existing building on a one-acre site into a beer production and tasting room. The 3,300-square-foot brewery is part of a larger multiparcel redevelopment that also includes retail space for takeout sales, it is reported.

The location of the proposed Iron Island Brewery is at 1223 Lovejoy St. near North Ogden. The site was originally home to the Hopf Star Theater that was built back in 1914.

The brewery will also feature a cobblestone beer garden in the back of the building that will offer customers a chance to sit outside on the concrete stamped patio while having plenty of windows that look back into the brewery.

The brewery will be called Iron Island and will have a beer production facility as well as a taproom. This project will also run in conjunction with restore the former Propis Grill that sits adjacent to the proposed brewery according to bizjournals.com.

Work on the building has begun with parts of the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Limitless Brewing to build a whole new operation in Lenexa
Limitless Brewing, the first brewery in Lenexa, plans to build a whole new operation along 95th Street, just minutes away from their current location, the Shawnee Mission Post reported on April 22.

The co-owners of Limitless Brewing signed a purchase agreement with Rick Oddo of Oddo Development on April 19 and made their announcement on Instagram the following day.

A new 7,000-square-foot facility will be built on an open space on the southwest corner of West 95th Street and Dice Lane.

“We’re super thankful because without our customers, we wouldn’t be doing any of this,” said Emily Mobley, one of the co-owners. “For us, we’re excited to have extra space and have the outdoor space. It really is just a better place for our customers to come and be part of the community that they’ve helped us build.”

Mobley said the new 7,000-square-foot building will house everything from production to a large patio in the back with a taproom.

Mobley and her fellow co-owners, husband Dave Mobley, Dave’s brother Steve Mobley and Darin Worthington, first opened the microbrewery and taphouse at 9765 Widmer Road in November 2018.

Like pretty much every small business in the area, Limitless Brewing was negatively impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Brewery news USA, CA: Far Field Beer Co. plans to launch its Lawndale facility in early June
Something is brewing in the LA beer scene and priming to deliver the flavorful, aromatic fruits of faraway hop fields straight to the residents of the inland South Bay area. Far Field Beer Co. plans to launch its Lawndale tasting room in early June. The craft beer operation will be the first brewery to call the city its home. Located at 4471 W. Rosecrans Ave., right off of the I-405, the facility will boast a tasting room complete with up to 20 draft beers, a patio and a production brewhouse located directly across from the tasting room, TheFullPint.com reported on April 22.

After drawing up plans, scouting potential sites and navigating a pandemic-delayed opening, the team behind Far Field is ready to serve cutting-edge craft beers in the city that the founders call home. Plus, the city needed beer, and this brewery is ready to answer the call.

Founded by husband and wife craft beer enthusiasts James and Regan Bardeen, Far Field will impart the couple’s love of all things beer throughout every recipe and square foot of the brand-new production facility and tasting room. James, with his background in RF engineering, applied his meticulous attention to detail while spearheading the ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Heineken to offer two zero-alcohol options in the majority of its markets by 2023
Heineken will ensure it offers two zero-alcohol options in the majority of its markets by 2023: driven by Heineken 0.0 and a portfolio of 130 non-alcoholic line extensions, BeverageDaily.com reported on April 22. Its pledge will be powered by alcohol-free Heineken 0.0: which the company says will continue to be ‘an integral part of Heineken’.

In 2020, Heineken 0.0 grew ‘strong double digits’: against flat volumes for brand Heineken (0.4%) and an 8.1% decline for the overall beer portfolio in the pandemic year. In Brazil, Mexico and the US in particular, the brand had an ‘outstanding performance’.

The 0.0 brand has continued strong performance into Q1 2021: reporting double digit growth. The brand is now available in 94 markets globally.

While Heineken 0.0 is the driver of the company’s zero-alcohol offer, the company pledges to have two zero options in most markets. Its portfolio currently contains 130 non-alcohol line extensions: with the company promising more innovation in this area.

Brewery news Japan: Unable to meet demand, Asahi to suspend sales of canned Super Dry beer
As people have more opportunities to drink alcoholic beverages at home due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, each Japanese beer manufacturer has enjoyed robust sales of their canned products, The Japan News reported on April 22.

A typical example of this special demand for household consumption is Asahi Super Dry Nama Jokki Can (Asahi Super Dry Draft Beer Can) by Asahi Breweries Ltd. The beer maker announced on April 21 that it has suspended sales as demand has exceeded initial expectations.

Asahi Breweries had started selling the product nationwide on April 20. The special can allows consumers to enjoy the sensation of drinking a real draft beer with a lot of foam from a mug in the same way they would at eating and drinking establishments.

When the can is opened, bubbles naturally come out. According to the beer maker, a special coating technique has been applied to the inside of the can so that bubbles emerge easily.

Immediately after the product was launched in convenience stores on April 6, there was a shortage of supply, and the company suspended shipments. It put a production system in place and started selling the product at supermarkets and other retailers on Tuesday, but the production of ...More info on site

Barley news France: Condition of wheat and barley crops deteriorates marginally but is still good
The condition of French wheat and barley crops deteriorated marginally for a second week but was still good, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on April 23, suggesting a moderate impact so far from recent cold, dry spells, Nasdaq reported.

An estimated 85% of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition in the week to April 19, down from 86% the prior week and 87% two weeks earlier, according to FranceAgriMer's cereal crop progress report.

The good/excellent score for winter barley fell to 81% from 83% after also shedding two points the week before, while the spring barley rating lost one point to 87% after a sharper four-point decline the week before.

The wheat and barley ratings remained well above levels seen last year when crops were hurt by torrential rain during sowing.

Unusually severe frosts in France two weeks ago ravaged vineyards, fruit orchards and sugar beet fields, with losses expected to be more limited for cereals.

FranceAgriMer's cereal reports do not give commentary on crop conditions. The head of the offices crop committee told reporters last week that there was concern about damage in parts of central and southern France, but it would take time to measure.

A thawing in temperatures helped ...More info on site

Brewery news The Dominican Republic: Wholesale and retail traders criticize platform used by CND to distribute and market its beer
Wholesale and retail traders criticize the Bees platform used by Cervecería Nacional Dominicana (CND) to distribute and market its own products as they claim it is monopolistic and creates unfair competition due to abuse of dominant market position, the Dominican Today reported on April 21.

On the other hand, José Infante, general director of Bees RD, when asked about this conflict, explains that they are an inclusive platform for all businesses that wish to enter and do not seek to compete for wholesale market shares.

He explained that CND is a supplier of Abejas Logistic Group, with whom they have an alliance for the distribution and delivery of the products marketed on their Bees platform.

“Our customers enter the platform any day and at any time, and they have the freedom to choose the products they want and need. Our platform has a diversified offer, which includes multiple categories of products such as canned goods, juices, milk, wines, spirits, and beers from other manufacturers to which our clients have quick and agile access,” he explained.

However, the president of the National Council of Commerce in Provisions (CNCP), Tomás Marcano, stated that this platform Bees not only distributes and markets Cervecería products but also other ...More info on site
