Australia: Full strength beer the preferred category for Australians who drink beer
|
New data from Roy Morgan’s Alcohol Consumption Report shows full strength beer is the preferred ‘amber fluid’ for Australians who drink beer, B&T reported on April 25.
Over a third of all Australians aged 18-plus, 6,277,000 (34.6 per cent), drink beer in an average four weeks including at least one of the three varieties of full strength, mid strength and low alcohol beer – second only to wine as the alcoholic drink of choice for Australians (covered in detail here: Number of Australians drinking alcohol in 2020 increases).
Nearly a third of Australians aged 18-plus (30.2 per cent) consumed full strength beer in an average four weeks in 2020, down 3.1 per cent points from 2019 (33.3 per cent). This is not surprising as the pandemic hit the hospitality industry heavily and kept many pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants closed for an extended period. In Victoria most drinking establishments were closed for at least six months and some have closed permanently.
In comparison only 8.6 per cent of Australians consumed mid-strength beer (down 2.2 per cent points on 2019) and just 2.8 per cent (down 1.1 per cent points) had low alcohol beer in an average four weeks during 2020.

Ireland: Government intends to introduce minimum pricing on beer, wine and spirits - report
|
A leaked memo due to be brought before Cabinet has revealed the Government's intentions on introducing a set minimum price of 10 cent per gram of alcohol, under Section 11 of the Public Health Alcohol Act, the Irish Mirror reported on April 25.
This plan will see an increase in the cost of "cheap alcohol", including wine, beer and spirits.
According to the memo, the new pricing regime would set a minimum price of €1.32 on a 440ml can of lager; €7.75 on a 750ml bottle of chardonnay; and €20.71 on a 700ml bottle of gin or vodka.
Supermarket brands such as Tesco’s own-brand vodka is also expected to in price from around €12.99 to €20.71, with a similar-sized bottle of gin increasing from €14.25 to €20.71 and a €3.99 bottle of wine rising in cost to €6.50.
Despite the legislation passing in 2018, the government has delayed introducing a minimum price per unit of alcohol until Northern Ireland was ready to impose similar legislation.
Speaking to the Sunday Independent, the Northern Ireland Health Minister Robin Swann said that such legislation will not be enacted in the North before May 2022, but the memo revealed that the Irish Government is revising its timeline for the

Japan & China: Kirin starts official exports of its non-alcoholic beer to China
|
Kirin Brewery has exported its first non-alcoholic beverage, Kirin Greens Free, to China, following successful pilot sales last year, FoodNavigatorAsia.com reported on April 27.
Kirin Greens Free is a non-alcoholic beer (0.00%) made from Nelson Sauvin hops, with no added artificial flavours or sweeteners.
First launched in Japan last April, the firm has since sold more than 23 million cans (350mL) as of December 2020, and targets to sell 40 million cans this year (Jan-Dec 2021).
Last year, Kirin conducted a test sale for Greens Free in China, selling about 408,000 cans from July to December 2020. It was sold at high-end supermarkets, department stores, Japanese-brand convenience stores, online, golf courses, and restaurants.
In response to the feedback, the firm has now officially started exports and has set an annual target of 1.15 million cans for the China market. The products will mainly be sold at convenience stores and mass merchandisers such as 7-Eleven.
China is known for its baijiu and beer culture, although, increasingly more health-conscious and younger consumers are moving away from beer.
Katsura Muraoka, assistant manager of corporate communications at Kirin Holdings, told FoodNavigator-Asia: “In China, the need for non-alcoholic beverages is gradually increasing as

Kenya: Keroche launches the strongest locally brewed beer
|
Naivasha-based brewer Keroche's beer production and sales has dropped by 25 percent due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has left bars and restaurants closed, The Star reported on April 27.
However, despite the challenges, the company has exuded confidence that it will recover through the newly launched Vienna Ice Strong Lager which it says will generate more than Sh1 billion to Kenya Revenue Authority annually.
This emerged during the launch of the new brand that has a 10 percent alcohol content.
According to the company chief executive Tabitha Karanja, this is the strongest locally brewed beer in a market in a market dominated by imports.
Karanja said plans were underway to launch another brand of strong beer in the next three months creating more job opportunities for residents and generating extra revenue.
“The new product Vienna Ice Strong Lager will generate over Sh1 billion to KRA every year and this will rise with time as per our market projections,” she said.
The CEO said that the product was introduced following a two-year survey which indicated the absence of strong beer in the country.
“For years consumers have relied on imports in this market and the new brand which is unique will fill in this gap,”
