Brewery news Canada, BC: Lakesider Brewing already open to public in West Kelowna
A West Kelowna brewpub that was two years in the making recently opened its doors to the public on April 9, the Kelowna Capital News reported on April 24.

Even with indoor dining prohibited under current provincial COVID-19 health restrictions, Lakesider Brewing co-owner Kieran Armour said that the brewpub’s patio scene has been lively ever since first opening.

“The local community has really embraced us. They’ve been braving the cold weather and the rain. They’re still here with bells on, so it’s been awesome,” said Armour, who co-owns the brewpub alongside his wife, Gale.

Located just off the Westside Wine Trail at 835 Anders Rd., the two-floor brewpub has a main floor lounge space and a basement lounge space, in addition to its wrap-around, pet-friendly patio.

All their beer is brewed in-house, adding new ones to the taps every few days until they reach all 14, along with one cider and a guest brew from another local brewery.

Their food menu is anchored by two main categories: thin-crust, Neapolitan-style pizza and four-inch, corn tortilla street tacos.

“You get three or four [tacos] in order. You can mix and match, whatever you like,” said Armour. “We’ve got a beef one, a prawn one, carnitas — which is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Syncopated Brewing Co. to open in Lakewood this month
With the goal of making every kind of beer possible, two beer vets have teamed up to open a new brewery in Lakewood this month, the Long Beach Press Telegram reported on April 25.

“We’re going to have fun with it; we’re going to make some fun easy drinking beers,” said Jason Van Fleet, owner of Dutch’s Brewhouse in Long Beach.

Van Fleet has partnered with former Ballast Point brewer Chris Klein to open Syncopated Brewing Co., a 4,000-square-foot brewery at 3671 Industry Ave. opening by the end of April.

Once it opens, people can expect beer styles including lagers, pilsners, saisons, sours, IPAs and pale ales.

“We’re a small-batch brewery so we’re just going to have fun with it,” Van Fleet said.

Some of the opening day beers will include brews like Sailor’s Legs, a 9.1% alcohol by volume chocolate-flavored imperial stout, and a 6.7% ABV red ale called Red Dragon Tattoo, which has caramel and tobacco flavors.

There will be lighter fare, too, including the Golden Lightfoot, a 5.3% ABV German style golden ale brewed with honey malt and fermented with a German ale yeast, so expect some citrus and sweet flavor.

Van Fleet said people can also expect some entertainment since there will be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Bellevue Brewing Company opening new location in Spring District
Bellevue Brewing Company is opening a new location in the Spring District. They recently applied for a permit at 1285 122nd Avenue Northeast, the Downtown Bellevue Network reported on April 27.

The brewery currently has a location is on 130th Avenue Northeast that opened in 2012. They offer handcrafted beers and a New American pub menu featuring meats smoked on-site.

Bellevue Brewing Company is the first, locally owned craft brewery in Bellevue. Along with beer, they also feature a large northwest wine selection, and hard ciders from around the region.

The Spring District is a transit-oriented development and neighborhood, composed of 16 blocks and 36-acres. It is near the future East Link light rail, scheduled to open in 2023.

The Spring District is also home to the new Greater Seattle headquarters. REI, who had originally planned to be there, announced that they had completed the sale of their property at a purchase price of $390 million to Facebook. Brewery news USA, TX: Ovinnik Brewing working towards late summer opening in Houston
Houston's newest entrant on the craft beer scene, Ovinnik Brewing, is working toward an opening by late summer in the Timbergrove area, the Community Impact Newspaper reported on April 23.

Formed by Janine Weber and partners Chris and Jen Mathis, the brewery will put a big focus on supporting the do-it-yourself, homebrewing crowd.

"I’ve been a homebrewer for 15 years. Jen’s a major brewer," Weber said. "We plan to be big supporters of that—brew-ins, yeast shares. We want that DIY theme to be our focus."

Weber said she decided to chase her dream of opening a brewery after her 35-year geology career was cut short with a layoff over a year and a half ago.

"As a geologist you have to know everything about everything. I’ve found it to be really helpful when I’m in the production of beer," she said.

The crew will likely offer Belgian-style beers, including tripels, witbiers and sours, but the lineup will be driven by what people want, Weber said.

The brewery's space at 7201 Wynnpark Drive, Houston, a former paint warehouse, will have a 3.5-barrel brewing system. A taproom will come eventually, but at the initial opening, it may be bare bones.

"We're bootstrapping it. We'll put out tables and folding ...More info on site

Frothy Beard said in a Facebook post that they had acquired Homegrown Brewhouse in Summerville and had plans on converting it to a second location by mid-June.

Until then, Frothy Beard says the establishment will continue operating as Homegrown Brewhouse.

Frothy Beard Brewing Company says the new Summerville location will be named Frothy Beard Off World and they want it to be a family friendly experience with food and drinks for everyone.

It will be open for lunch from Friday through Sunday and serve dinner every night of the week. Additionally, they said they would have a Sunday brunch menu.

The new location will be used to create small batch beers that Frothy Beard says will be in rotation with all the flagship beers they serve.

Brewery news Australia: Full strength beer the preferred category for Australians who drink beer
New data from Roy Morgan’s Alcohol Consumption Report shows full strength beer is the preferred ‘amber fluid’ for Australians who drink beer, B&T reported on April 25.

Over a third of all Australians aged 18-plus, 6,277,000 (34.6 per cent), drink beer in an average four weeks including at least one of the three varieties of full strength, mid strength and low alcohol beer – second only to wine as the alcoholic drink of choice for Australians (covered in detail here: Number of Australians drinking alcohol in 2020 increases).

Nearly a third of Australians aged 18-plus (30.2 per cent) consumed full strength beer in an average four weeks in 2020, down 3.1 per cent points from 2019 (33.3 per cent). This is not surprising as the pandemic hit the hospitality industry heavily and kept many pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants closed for an extended period. In Victoria most drinking establishments were closed for at least six months and some have closed permanently.

In comparison only 8.6 per cent of Australians consumed mid-strength beer (down 2.2 per cent points on 2019) and just 2.8 per cent (down 1.1 per cent points) had low alcohol beer in an average four weeks during 2020.

Brewery news Ireland: Government intends to introduce minimum pricing on beer, wine and spirits - report
A leaked memo due to be brought before Cabinet has revealed the Government's intentions on introducing a set minimum price of 10 cent per gram of alcohol, under Section 11 of the Public Health Alcohol Act, the Irish Mirror reported on April 25.

This plan will see an increase in the cost of "cheap alcohol", including wine, beer and spirits.

According to the memo, the new pricing regime would set a minimum price of €1.32 on a 440ml can of lager; €7.75 on a 750ml bottle of chardonnay; and €20.71 on a 700ml bottle of gin or vodka.

Supermarket brands such as Tesco’s own-brand vodka is also expected to in price from around €12.99 to €20.71, with a similar-sized bottle of gin increasing from €14.25 to €20.71 and a €3.99 bottle of wine rising in cost to €6.50.

Despite the legislation passing in 2018, the government has delayed introducing a minimum price per unit of alcohol until Northern Ireland was ready to impose similar legislation.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent, the Northern Ireland Health Minister Robin Swann said that such legislation will not be enacted in the North before May 2022, but the memo revealed that the Irish Government is revising its timeline for the ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & China: Kirin starts official exports of its non-alcoholic beer to China
Kirin Brewery has exported its first non-alcoholic beverage, Kirin Greens Free, to China, following successful pilot sales last year, FoodNavigatorAsia.com reported on April 27. Kirin Greens Free is a non-alcoholic beer (0.00%) made from Nelson Sauvin hops, with no added artificial flavours or sweeteners.

First launched in Japan last April, the firm has since sold more than 23 million cans (350mL) as of December 2020, and targets to sell 40 million cans this year (Jan-Dec 2021).

Last year, Kirin conducted a test sale for Greens Free in China, selling about 408,000 cans from July to December 2020. It was sold at high-end supermarkets, department stores, Japanese-brand convenience stores, online, golf courses, and restaurants.

In response to the feedback, the firm has now officially started exports and has set an annual target of 1.15 million cans for the China market. The products will mainly be sold at convenience stores and mass merchandisers such as 7-Eleven.

China is known for its baijiu and beer culture, although, increasingly more health-conscious and younger consumers are moving away from beer.

Katsura Muraoka, assistant manager of corporate communications at Kirin Holdings, told FoodNavigator-Asia: “In China, the need for non-alcoholic beverages is gradually increasing as ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Keroche launches the strongest locally brewed beer
Naivasha-based brewer Keroche's beer production and sales has dropped by 25 percent due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has left bars and restaurants closed, The Star reported on April 27.

However, despite the challenges, the company has exuded confidence that it will recover through the newly launched Vienna Ice Strong Lager which it says will generate more than Sh1 billion to Kenya Revenue Authority annually.

This emerged during the launch of the new brand that has a 10 percent alcohol content.

According to the company chief executive Tabitha Karanja, this is the strongest locally brewed beer in a market in a market dominated by imports.

Karanja said plans were underway to launch another brand of strong beer in the next three months creating more job opportunities for residents and generating extra revenue.

“The new product Vienna Ice Strong Lager will generate over Sh1 billion to KRA every year and this will rise with time as per our market projections,” she said.

The CEO said that the product was introduced following a two-year survey which indicated the absence of strong beer in the country.

“For years consumers have relied on imports in this market and the new brand which is unique will fill in this gap,” ...More info on site
