World: Molson Coors Beverage reports Q1 profit that beat expectations
|
Molson Coors Beverage Co. said it expects to be in a position to reinstate its dividend in the second half of this year after its first-quarter profit beat expectations even as its revenue dropped nearly 10 per cent from a year ago, the Canadian Press reported on April 29.
The brewery and beverage company suspended its quarterly dividend and furloughed some employees as part of efforts last May due to global uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Molson Coors, which keeps its books in U.S. dollars, said its net income attributable to shareholders increased to US$84.1 million or 39 cents per diluted share in the first quarter, compared with a loss of US$117 million or 54 cents per share a year earlier.
Net sales for the three months ended March 31 fell to US$1.9 billion, from US$2.1 billion a year earlier.
The company faced a cybersecurity incident, a winter storm in Texas that caused its Fort Worth brewery to lose power and government sales restrictions in Britain in the quarter.
Excluding one-time items, its adjusted profit fell to US$1.6 million or one cent per share, down from US$77 million or 35 cents per share in the first quarter of 2020.
Molson Coors was expected on average

Japan: Kirin Holdings to adapt to changing lifestyles in Japan
|
The following is excerpted from an interview with Kirin Holdings Co. President Yoshinori Isozaki, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported on April 30.
“The novel coronavirus crisis has drastically changed the way we live. Pandemic lifestyles may even start to feel normal if things continue as they are for another year.
“Alcoholic drinks for home consumption have been selling well. Kirin Brewery Co.’s zero-carb Ichiban Shibori beer is selling much better than anticipated.
“Going forward, our focus will be quality rather than quantity. We intend to accelerate the sales of our craft beer products and our Home Tap server for household use.
“By looking at customer trends, we need to change our sales approach.
“The thinking used to be that if we could get contracts with dining establishments, we would secure stable profits. But unlike overseas, sales to eateries are not profitable in Japan because there are many expenses involved, such as the provision of equipment. This was fine when the market was growing, but now we are in an era when everything is shrinking.
“Nowadays, there are many products for household use and consumers have more choices. The company decided to enhance its brand power and focus on the home market even though the path forward has

Belgium: Brewers race to get beer to bars for great reopening
|
Belgium's cafe terraces will not re-open to thirsty beer drinkers for another week but the country's renowned brewers are already all hands to the pump, France 24 reported on April 30.
Six months after the country went into a second coronavirus lockdown, proud bar owners and beer makers alike are keen to get back to business.
They are confident their countrymen and women have not lost their taste for Belgium's world-famous brews, but the task of getting new barrels into cellars is huge.
And - with interior service still banned and social distancing in place - time is running out for some in an industry that has already been hit hard by the pandemic.
"It's a whole machine that needs to be put back on the road," explains Lionel Van Der Haegen, director of the Silly brewery, in the Belgian village of the same name.
The brewery is working hard, but Van Der Haegen fears for the bars that take his beer. "Some have gone bankrupt," he told AFP. "Every day counts. We need to reopen as soon as possible."
Halting Belgium's draft beer cycle in October was a massive logistical exercise it its own right.
In normal times, heavy beer barrels are rolled into bar cellars

Ireland: Diageo to scrap Guinness spin-off Hop House 13 beer
|
The Guinness spin-off beer brand Hop House 13 is reportedly set to be discontinued amid declining sales, the Irish Post reported on April 29.
According to an exclusive report in The Grocer, Diageo is to cease the sale of the craft beer brand in the UK.
Originally launched in the hopes of cashing in on the craft beer boom, the Guinness spin-off has been delisted by its parent company.
As a result, the beer will soon be unavailable in supermarkets, pubs and bars.
It represents a remarkable decline for a brand that had initially sold well in the UK, ranking among the best-selling brands with critics and customers praising it as a refreshing alternative to the lagers and beers already on offer.
However, a slump in sales during the pandemic despite soaring alcohol consumption during the pandemic has put paid to the brand in the UK with other regions potentially following.
The Grocer reports that Hop House lost 8.7% of its value over the 52 weeks to September 5th, 2020 while sales fell £2.5m to £26.7m with volumes down 12.5%.
Guinness, by contrast, added £27m to its value, rising to £104.5m over the same period with an overall 35% gain.
A spokesperson for the drinks company confirmed the

UK: UK pubs facing draught beer shortage
|
UK pubs are facing a shortage in draught beer after a considerable surge in demand as lockdown eases once again, The Drinks Business reported on April 27.
It has been reported that Heineken UK is now limiting pubs to ordering no more than three kegs a week of certain beers, after a huge uptick in demand for beers including Bira Morretti and Amstel.
After more than 10 million Brits headed back to their locals in the wake of easing lockdown restrictions, Heineken UK has allegedly told pubs to order no more than three kegs a week to help cope with supply issues.
Demand for draught beer had “totally surpassed our most optimistic forecasts”, Heineken UK told MailOnline, adding that its breweries were “working round the clock” to keep up with the surge.
Regional representatives coordinator for the Campaign for Pubs, Alastair Kerr, said of the shortages:
“The beer shortage issues that are being faced my some publicans across the UK is a serious problem that is affecting their ability to trade efficiently and turn a profit.
“Since reopening, pubs have faced an increase in demand from customers as many people flocked to pubs across the UK, so it is a real shame that some pubs are

Canada: Barley seeded area this year could be the largest since 2009
|
On April 27, Statistics Canada released its first seeded area estimates for 2021 based on their field crop surveys and presented in the Principal Field Crop Areas report
As expected, barley area is forecast up from 2020, with increases also projected for canola, soybeans, flax and corn, while wheat and oat areas are projected lower. The data is based on a survey of producers conducted in March. With significant market volatility in recent months, farmers may have made some adjustments to their seeding decisions since that time which could result in some considerable modifications to the final outcomes
At 8.613 million acres, this would be the largest barley seeded area in Canada since 2009. This will be the fourth consecutive year of increases since 2017 when barley seeded area fell to 5.77 mln acres, its lowest level since the early 1960s.
The increase in seeded barley area this year is driven in particular by the forecast for Saskatchewan (up 24.5%), with higher projections for Manitoba and Alberta as well. While Alberta remains the largest province in terms of barley area at 3.949 mln acres, Saskatchewan is not far behind this year at 3.889 mln acres. The last time Saskatchewan barley seeded

Australia & China: Australia increases WTO pressure on China over barley and wine
|
Australia is on course for a showdown with China at the World Trade Organisation over Beijing’s tariffs on Australian barley after the two sides clashed in Geneva on Wednesday, April 28, The Australian Financial Review reported.
China rejected Australia’s bid to set up a three-member independent panel of experts to resolve the dispute, but under WTO rules, Beijing will be forced to agree to the panel at the next meeting of the Organisation’s Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) on May 28.
The barley imbroglio will be the first of Australia’s trade spats with China to move into a formal WTO dispute process, although a separate stoush over wine was also discussed in Geneva this week.
Beijing hit Australian barley with a 73.6 per cent anti-dumping duty and a 6.9 per cent countervailing duty last May, in a move Canberra regards as politically motivated.
Previously about half of Australia’s feed barley and 86 per cent of its malting barley, by value, was exported to China – but that trade has withered since Beijing’s taxes took effect.
Australia’s trade diplomats began raising the issue at WTO meetings late last year, and the barley industry appealed to China’s commerce ministry to reverse the decision – all to no avail.

Australia: Hop Products Australia completes its 2021 harvest
|
Australia’s leading hop grower Hop Products Australia (HPA) has completed its 2021 harvest, picking 675 hectares across their three farms that yielded 1,526 metric tonnes, the Beer and Brewer reported on April 29.
This represented a 44 hectare (+6.9%) increase and a 25 metric tonne (-1.6%) decrease year-on-year across six proprietary varieties: Eclipse; Ella; Enigma; Galaxy; Topaz; and Vic Secret – as well as the non-proprietary Cascade. Ella came in 22% under contracted volumes while Topaz and Cascade yields were significantly down on the previous year, but HPA said that was due to reductions and idling of acreage for those two varieties.
With responsible contracting in place HPA said it will meet all of their obligations with the exception of Ella and that it will now work with breweries to minimise the impact of that, including suggesting replacement hops from their international and advanced product portfolio.
Despite the La Niña weather pattern causing total yield to come in under expectations the return on HPA’s star hop Galaxy grew 7.2% to total 974 metric tonnes. This follows a 24% increase last year over the 2019 harvest
Managing Director Tim Lord said: “This marks 11 years of continuous growth for Galaxy, with the exception of 2016
