Canada: Molson Coors expects to be in a position to reinstate its dividend in the second half of this year
|
Molson Coors Beverage Co. said it expects to be in a position to reinstate its dividend in the second half of this year after its first-quarter profit beat expectations even as its revenue dropped nearly 10 per cent from a year ago, the Toronto Star reported on April 29.
The brewery and beverage company suspended its quarterly dividend and furloughed some employees as part of efforts last May due to global uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Molson Coors, which keeps its books in U.S. dollars, said its net income attributable to shareholders increased to US$84.1 million or 39 cents per diluted share in the first quarter, compared with a loss of US$117 million or 54 cents per share a year earlier.
Net sales for the three months ended March 31 fell to US$1.9 billion, from US$2.1 billion a year earlier.
The company faced a cybersecurity incident, a winter storm in Texas that caused its Fort Worth brewery to lose power and government sales restrictions in Britain in the quarter.
Excluding one-time items, its adjusted profit fell to US$1.6 million or one cent per share, down from US$77 million or 35 cents per share in the first quarter of 2020.
Molson Coors was expected on average

Australia: Government announces increase in beer excise tax rebate for small brewers
|
Australia’s Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg on May 1 announced an increase in the beer excise tax rebate from A$100,000 to A$350,000.
From July this year, eligible brewers and distillers will be able to claim a refund on any excise they pay up to an annual cap of A$350,000. Brewers can currently claim a rebate of 60 per cent of the excise they pay, up to an annual cap of A$100,000.
The move has been pre-announced ahead of the May 11 Budget.
The announcement comes after a long campaign by the Independent Brewers Association, and formerly the Craft Beer Industry Association, which argues the increased tax rebate will help Australian independent brewers reinvest and continue to grow.
“Today’s investment from the Morrison Government is helping to rebuild an Australian-owned beer industry that will turbo-charge growth and deliver skilled jobs in family-owned, independent breweries around the country,” Independent Brewers Association (IBA) Chairman Peter Philip said in a release.
The association campaigned for the excise break similar to the that enjoyed by the wine industry, arguing that even after the rebate, independent brewers are forecast to contribute more than A$200 million in excise to the government in the 2022 financial year, growing to more than A$300m in FY2025.

UK: Budweiser Brewing Group expects summer sport to boost beer sales
|
The return of the summer of sport will drive sales of 413 million pints of beer in the UK Off Trade this June, according to predictions from Budweiser Brewing Group, a subsidiary of AB InBev, KamCity reported on May 4.
Consumption of beer rockets during TV sports compared to the average at-home occasion, with the 2018 World Cup driving a 31 million pint increase in sales of beer. This year, the summer’s packed calendar of sporting events, including the Euros and Wimbledon Championships, is expected to present an unprecedented opportunity for the Off Trade to drive sales in the category.
Budweiser is forecasting that sales of beer in the summer months will grow around 20% compared to the last year of regular trading in 2019, equivalent to an additional 88 million pints sold.
Neil Baker, Head of Category Management at Budweiser Brewing Group, said: “Beer and sport go hand in hand for many consumers and for retailers, sporting occasions have always driven mammoth sales within the beer category. This year is set to be bigger than ever for stores, as Brits gather to celebrate the return of long-awaited sporting events at home.
“With just over a month until the Euros begin, stores need to

South Korea: Oriental Brewery pays 400 bln won in dividends to mother company AB InBev
|
South Korea's largest beer maker Oriental Brewery (OB) paid 400 billion won in dividends to its Belgian mother company Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) for the second consecutive year despite its poor performance affected by COVID-19, the Korea Times reported on May 5.
OB is owned 100 percent by AB InBev and the entire dividend was paid to the headquarters in Leuven, Belgium.
Until last year, OB had been paying dividends once every two years. But this changed when the brewery sent 439 billion won in 2019 and 400 billion won last year.
The dividend payments have been exceeding its profits recently. OB's net profit in 2020 showed 274.3 billion won, which is 125.7 billion won lower than the 400 billion won it paid. A year earlier, the brewery remitted 58.4 billion won more in dividends than the net profit of 380.5 billion won it created.
From April 2014, when AB InBev took back OB from local private equity fund KPR for $5.8 billion, the Belgian company received a total 1.55 trillion won in dividends.
OB has been saying the amount of dividends only seems high because it was making the payments only every two years. But when it paid out for two years straight, OB

Belgium: Trappist brewery Chimay to launch new permanent beer for the first time in 55 years
|
The Trappist brewery Chimay has announced that it will officially launch a new permanent beer for the first time in 55 years, unveiling the new Green labelled beer on an already colourful lineup, The Brussels Times reported on May 3.
Officially named Chimay 150, the new beer will join the Dorée, the Rouge, the Blanche (triple) and the Bleue, bringing the brewery up to 5 permanent beers.
According to the International Trappist Association, producing a new Trappist beer is no short order, and must meet certain criteria:
• Made within the immediate surroundings of the abbey;
• Production must be carried out under the supervision of the monks or nuns;
• Profits should be intended for the needs of the monastic community, for purposes of solidarity within the Trappist Order, or for development projects and charitable works.
“It was a beer that we had wanted to launch for a long time and for which the board of directors, which includes three monks, agreed this year,” Giselda Mercuri, marketing manager of Bières et fromages de Chimay told local media. “We were missing this beer, blonde, strong, a little rounder and with a more accessible bitterness than the Chimay Blanche (triple),” she added.
The beer – first brewed in 2012 to mark

Germany: Oktoberfest cancelled for the second year in a row
|
Bavarian officials on May 3 canceled Oktoberfest festivities for the second year in a row due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19, saying there are too many risks in hosting the celebrations — which bring in visitors from around the world — during a global pandemic that’s still ongoing, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Bavarian Governor Markus Soeder said it was with “heavy hearts” that officials decided to call off the festival for which the state is known globally, but that with coronavirus case numbers still stubbornly high and German hospitals already struggling, it had to be done.
“Oktoberfest will be held again and will be big again,” Soeder pledged.
Germany is in the middle of a coronavirus lockdown that includes a ban on large gatherings, with an infection rate of 146.9 new weekly infections per 100,000 residents.
Bavaria is slightly below the national average, with 145.4 new weekly infections per 100,000, according to the country’s disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute.
Oktoberfest typically attracts about 6 million visitors from around the world and had been scheduled from Sept. 18 to Oct. 3.

Italy: Birra Peroni brings Czech beer Kozel to Italy
|
Italian beer brand Birra Peroni has boosted its portfolio of premium beers in Italy with the addition of Czech brand Kozel, the ESM Magazine reported on April 29.
In Italy, Kozel will be produced in the Padua plant, in both Premium Lager and Dark Lager variants, reports La Repubblica.
With a presence in 48 countries, the Czech beer brand sells 4.5 million hl globally.
The premium lager segment accounts for 30% of the beer market in Italy, and is the fastest growing category, with international lagers accounting for €613 million worth of sales in 2019.
Named after a billy goat, the Kozel brand began 150 years ago in the Czech Republic, in the village of Velké Popovice.
Its products include Kozel Premium Lager (4.6% vol) and Kozel Dark Lager (3.5% vol), with both brands receiving more 200 awards over the years, in recognition of their quality.
The launch of the Kozel brand is only one of the elements of Birra Peroni’s growth strategy in Italy, sales director Davide Gibertini told La Repubblica.
In response to the growing trend for zero alcohol beer, earlier this year Birra Peroni, which is owned by Japanese drinks giant Asahi, launched the Nastro Azzurro Zero beer. It expects non-alcoholic beers to account

Argentina: Farmers in Argentina to expand barley plantations by 28% this year
|
Farmers in Argentina are looking to cash in on a trade dispute between Australia and China, Bloomberg reported on May 5.
Argentine producers are poised to expand barley plantations by 28% this year, after China imposed tariffs on Australian exports of grain used to feed livestock, one of a series of similar restrictions imposed by Beijing after a deterioration. of his relationship with the island.
Farmers in the Argentine Pampa crop belt frequently compete with Australia for a share of world wheat sales, while also shipping their barley to camel herds in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Middle East. However, diplomatic turmoil, which comes as concern among Argentine farmers grows that the government could increase export taxes on wheat, has opened up a possibility of an alliance with China.
Because wheat and barley are nearly interchangeable when used as animal feed ingredients, barley is often a highly sought-after replacement when wheat prices skyrocket. Since the end of June, benchmark wheat futures in the United States have risen 53%, hitting an eight-year high last week.
In the last decade, Australia has been the largest supplier of barley to China, according to MIT Media Lab data, with the Asian giant supplying more than half
