USA, GA: Georgia’s first black brewery Hippin Hops Brewery & Oyster Bar already open
|
The first black brewery in Georgia opened last week in East Atlanta Village, Patch.com reported on May 5.
Hippin Hops Brewery & Oyster Bar co-owner Clarence Boston told Atlanta CBS 46 he had no idea he was the only African American owned brewery in the state brewing from its own brick and mortar location when he began developing the business.
"We were shocked," said Boston, who owns the business with his wife Donnica. "We didn't even know."
Two other Black-owned breweries — Khonso Brewing and Down Home Brewing — don't produce their beers onsite, but contract out the process to off-site brew facilities, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Boston said he has been making home brews for more than 20 years, and was happy to turn his hobby into a business.
"Back in the day we couldn't afford to buy beer, so we made our own," he said.
Craft beers on tap include a wheat beer, an IPA call "Baby Momma Drama," an oyster stout, and a brew called Barley Legal.
Besides an assortment of craft beers, the menu at Hippin Hop also features "freshly shucked" oysters on the half-shell as well as Oysters Rockefeller and a few twists on the traditional baked shellfish dish.

USA, IL: Half Acre Beer Company agrees to sell its original location
|
Chicago’s Half Acre Beer Company has reached an agreement to sell its original location to a brewing company, according to a press release, NBC Chicago reported on May 6.
The deal between Half Acre and Chicagoland-based brewing company, Hop Butcher For the World, is set to be closed later this year.
The agreement allows Hop Butcher to take over the 13,000-squar foot brewery and tap room located at 4257 North Lincoln Ave. in the city’s North Center neighborhood.
“We have been enamored with Half Acre – both its beers and its people – well before Hop Butcher For The World was even a company. To be able to call them friends – but also to now have an opportunity to brew our beers in these ‘hallowed halls of hoppy beers’ - is about as good as it gets for our crew and our growing brewery,” Hop Butcher co-founder Jeremiah Zimmer said in a press release.
Half Acre has been brewed and sold out of the Lincoln Ave. facility since 2008 and still operates a production facility on Balmoral Avenue.
“In beer, much of the language and the way of things is about movement and evolution. This transition allows Half Acre to keep moving, try new

USA, WA: Stoup Brewing launches its new Kenmore location
|
Stoup Brewing has expanded outside the boundaries of the Ballard Brewery District to open their new Kenmore location on May 6, joining forces with Seaplane Kitchen and Bar for the new venture, My Ballard reported.
Seaplane, part of the Weimann Maclise restaurant group, will be turned into Stoup Brewing Kenmore. The restaurant group includes popular Seattle-area restaurants including Poquitos, Rhein Haus, Sabine, Stoneburner, and Macleod’s. Stoup’s new brewery and restaurant opened its doors at 2 pm on May 6 and is located in the heart of Kenmore at the Hangar at Town Square (6704 NE 181st St).
Stoup’s new spot will have local chef Jason Stoneburner heading up the kitchen, creating a “Northwest-inspired menu centered around stone hearth pizzas, salads, and beer-friendly big plates.” Along with their extensive menu, they’ll be serving 22 beers on tap including their Citra IPA, Mosaic Pale, and Robust Porter with a constant rotation of other favorites including the Mothership IPA, which is brewed exclusively for the Ballard and Kenmore locations.
You can also get to-go beers at the new location—they’ll have a designated retail area selling 4-packs, pre-filled crowlers, and Stoup swag. In the future, they’ll also have a curated selection of beers from industry friends.

USA, FL: Windermere Brewing Company officially underway
|
Windermere Brewing Company’s taproom and microbrewery in downtown Windermere is officially underway, the West Orange Times & Windermere Observer reported on May 5.
Town staff, council members, friends and family gathered at the site — 111 W. Fifth Ave. — for a small groundbreaking ceremony and beer toast Friday, April 30.
Co-founders Dr. Joe Ata and Andy McGhee have worked since 2017 to bring their vision to life. For the past few years, they have been brewing their beer at McGhee’s house.
Windermere Town Council members approved plans for the taproom and microbrewery last fall. A house that previously sat on the site was demolished, and dirt is turning now to bring the 2,519-square-foot commercial building to life.
Last fall, McGhee said the building’s design is meant to pay homage to the town and what it would have looked like in the 1920s. It will also feel much like a lake house — a tribute to the town among the lakes.
“There hasn’t been a redevelopment in the town of Windermere — especially within the downtown area — for over 20 years, so they were pretty much the guinea pig,” Town Manager Robert Smith said. “They were very patient with not only staff, but

France: Soft wheat shipments lowest for an April in nine years, no malting barley exports are reported
|
French soft wheat shipments outside the European Union last month were the lowest for an April in nine years, as exports to Morocco and Algeria eased, Refinitiv data showed, Reuters reported on May 5.
Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the EU-27 and Britain totalled 665,600 tonnes in April, the 10th month of the 2020/21 season, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv loading data showed.
That was the lowest April volume since 2011/12, the data showed.
Last month’s haul was also more than a quarter less than March’s 908,400 tonnes. The March figure was revised down from an initial estimate, but was still a season high.
Traders say export activity has waned due to dwindling supplies from a small 2020 French harvest, slackening demand from importers and a price rally that left French wheat uncompetitive overseas.
Morocco was again the leading destination in April, accounting for 238,900 tonnes, nearly a quarter less than the volume shipped there in March.
Egypt was the second largest non-EU destination with 126,000 tonnes, equal to the volume shipped in March.
Algeria, usually the biggest annual outlet for French soft wheat, took just 75,500 tonnes in April after 240,900 in March.
No wheat was shipped to China last month for the second month

Ireland & UK: Guinness craft beer spin-off Hop House 13 to still be available in Ireland and Northern Ireland
|
The Guinness craft beer spin-off Hop House 13 is being scrapped in Great Britain but will still be available across the island of Ireland, the Irish Post reported on May 5.
It was previously reported that Diageo had opted to discontinue the brand in the UK amid declining sales during the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision came as a shock to many, particularly as Hop House 13 had proven popular upon its initial release with many viewing it as a refreshing alternative to many of the more traditional lagers on tap in pubs across the country.
Diageo described the move as a “strategic decision” designed to help “prioritise the main Guinness trademark in Great Britain”.
They were keen to stress that the decision to shelve Hop House had been “difficult” but was they felt was “right for Guinness in the long term.”
News of the beer’s demise sparked uproar among many fans, with some in Ireland expressing disappointment at the news.
However, a spokesperson for the drinks industry giant has told the Irish Post that Hop House 13 will live on across the island of Ireland.
“Hop House 13 is a much-loved beer and one of the most successful beer innovations in Ireland of the past 6 years

Ukraine: Ukraine seeds 1.3 mln ha of spring barley as of May 6
|
Ukraine has sown a total of 4.4 million hectares of spring grains as of May 6, or 58% of the expected area, agriculture ministry data showed on May 7.
Farms have sown 2.4 million hectares of corn, 1.3 million hectares of barley, 226,400 hectares of peas, 172,200 hectares of wheat and 185,400 hectares of oats.
The overall grain area is likely to total 15.5 million hectares this year, including 7.6 million of spring grains, the ministry has said.
The spring sowing area is expected to include 1.388 million hectares of barley, 176,600 hectares of wheat, 5.327 million hectares of corn, 194,050 hectares of oats and 235,400 hectares of peas.
Generally favourable weather could help farmers to increase the grain crop to 75 million tonnes this year from 65 million in 2020.
The ministry said farms had also sown 3.2 million hectares of sunflower, 223,000 hectares of sugar beet and 254,800 hectares of soy beans so far.
