Barley news Canada: Canada ships most of its barley export target for this crop year
Canada’s barley exports in August-April were around 3 mln tonnes, of which 2.6 mln to China, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their May report.

The export target is 3.5 mln tonnes for the crop year August-July 2020/21. Canadian farmers plan to seed 8.613 mln acres (3.485 mln ha) of barley this year vs. 7.561 mln acres in 2020. Alberta will be the largest province with 1.6 mln, followed very closely by Saskatchewan with 1.57 mln acres.

Markets were calm in April, China being absent from the market, and domestic maltsters on the sidelines, unhappy with the existing price levels.

Brewery news USA, TX: Deadbeach Brewery breaking ground on new regional production facility in El Paso
The locally-owned business Deadbeach Brewery is taking anchor in downtown El Paso, breaking ground on Friday, May 14 for a new regional production facility, at 3200 Durango Street, KVIA El Paso reported.

Along with their brewery where they craft beer and offer food, the new facility opens much bigger doors.

Deadbeach Brewery steps onto the national stage with their product, something that hasn't been done in decades. Their new facility will give them the ability to keg, can and distribute their brews from Louisiana to California.

Once up and running, DeadBeach Brewery will look to have beer in six states and over 28 markets.

Co-owner and brewer Gabrial Montoya told ABC-7, "We love the area and enjoy being a part of the revitalization of downtown."

In order to renovate the property, the team believes it should take nearly a year to become fully operational.

The Deadbeach Brewery's existing pub is open each week from Thursday through Sunday between 11 a.m. and to 11 p.m.

Brewery news USA, MN: Nine Mile Brewing Company to become Bloomington’s first craft brewery
Nine Mile Brewing Company announced on May 13 plans to open the first craft brewery and taproom to be located in Bloomington, Minn., Brewbound reported.

Bob Countryman, founder and operator, has partnered with a group of local investors to establish the new gathering place at 9555 James Ave S. The Nine Mile vision is to provide a warm, friendly atmosphere where friends, family, community members and other patrons can enjoy fresh craft beer, lively conversation and a variety of entertainment.

The 10,500 square-foot Bloomington location will include a 3,000 square-foot taproom, a dog-friendly outdoor patio, brewing facilities and 2,000 square-feet of event space. The new taproom will seat approximately 200 guests, where they can choose from a dozen or more craft beers on tap, play games and more. The taproom and brewery are set to open to the public in the Fall of 2021.

“Running the gamut from crispy pilsners, to sure-fire Hazy IPAs, to vivid sours and everything in-between will be made for y’all to enjoy,” John Leingang, Head Brewer at Nine MileBrewing Co. “Paying homage to established styles, digging up forgotten recipes, and endlessly riffing upon anything that can be considered beer will be the name of the game. Brewery news USA, TX: Savage Brew Lab to open its doors on Friday, May 14
The announcement of Savage Brew Lab first came in early March on KBTX’s Brazos Valley This Morning and after a few months of work and brewing, it’s time for the biergarten and brewpub to open its doors on May 14, showcasing an expansive outdoor space, unique craft beers, and food from a BCS favorite, KBTX reported.

Located next door to the Kyle House at 800 South Bryan Avenue in Bryan, Savage Brew Lab features many options for guests in an enjoyable environment.

“[People] can expect a nice big outdoor space, plenty of room for kids to run around, bring your dog,” said Laura Hill, co-owner of Savage Brew Lab.

From sitting outside during the day and playing yard games to enjoying nights under the twinkling lights, guests can enjoy an atmosphere you would expect to find in Austin or Dallas.

For Barry Ivins, owner of Kyle House partners, this environment is ideal. “Great beverages, good food, and good times,” as Ivins described it.

In the center of the Biergarten is an actual garden trellis that Savage Brew Lab owners Jason Kinderman and Laura Hill use to grow ingredients for their beers. Currently growing are herbs, melons, cucumbers, and more, which they plan to use in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Two Rivers Alehouse to open its doors in Washington around June
There’s a simple motto at Two Rivers Alehouse, thewashingtondailynews.com reported on May 13.

“The whole thing is we want everybody to be able to come in here and find a beer,” said Bubba Summerlin, one of the owners of the new microbrewery on Main Street. “Our motto is ‘A beer for everyone.’”

Located at 186 W. Main St. in downtown Washington, Two Rivers will open its doors around June. The menu will include around eight to 10 beers brewed in-house, as well as a selection of beers from other local breweries. Two Rivers will also offer what Summerlin calls an “appetizer, hors d’oeuvre-type menu” that includes meats, cheeses, chips and dips and other items. For non-beer drinkers, Two Rivers will offer wine and soft drinks as well.

“We are all about trying to build the community,” Summerlin said. “I feel like Washington has made a lot of good moves in the past few years, but I still feel like this is just the first step, the ground floor of what’s really going to happen with Washington.

“You come down here at nighttime, past 7 o’clock and it’s only one or two businesses open. We’re hoping that by us being here, and the Mulberry House, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Ravinia Brewing’s second brewpub in Logan Square, Chicago already open to public
Ravinia Brewing opened a second brewpub in Logan Square, nearly two years after the brewery brewed their first batch of beer in the same neighborhood, porchdrinking.com reports.

Ravinia’s second brewpub location opened to the public on Friday, May 7. The brewery has been around since 2017, where they began distributing from their Highland Park facility, which later become the location to house their first brewpub.

Ravinia may be new to the Chicago craft beer scene, but the people behind the Logan Square brewpub are not. Head Brewer, Raul, comes to Ravinia with extensive experience in craft beer, including 5 Rabbit Cervecería. Eric Fritzsche, Ravinia’s general manager, comes from the beloved Piece Pizza and Utopian Tailgate. Head of Restaurants, Gabriel Boden, joins the team from Revolution Brewing, where he spent the past seven years as GM of the Logan Square brewpub. Leading the back of the house team are Juan Carlos Bueno and Christian Sanchez, both joining from Lagunitas’ kitchen in Chicago.

From their flagship beers to their seasonal offerings, Ravinia has a unique offering of beers sure to appeal to a mass audience. Their newest flagship addition, Diversey Station, is a Session Pale Ale that pays homage to their newest brewpub location. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Creemore Springs Brewery closes down its brewpub in downtown Toronto
Creemore Springs Brewery has announced that its Batch House brewpub in downtown Toronto has permanently closed its doors, The Canadian Beer News reported on May 14.

Launched in March 2016 at 75 Victoria Street – a space that had previously been home to a series of other breweries, including Beer Academy, Duggan’s Brewery, and Denison’s Brewing – Batch House offered a selection of house brewed beers along with Creemore Springs and affiliated brands, and a food menu focused on upscale pub favourites and comfort food classics.

The impact of COVID-19 led to what was intended to be a temporary closure last June, but that shuttering is now permanent, the company said in a statement posted on social media.

While it’s not known at this time if Creemore Springs or its parent company Molson Coors will be opening another brewing concept in the space post-pandemic, the statement closes by saying that they “do have some exciting things to come so please stay tuned for more details.”

Barley news France: Crop ratings for winter barley stable, spring barley conditions improved
Crop ratings for French wheat and winter barley were stable in the week to May 10 while spring barley conditions improved, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on May 14, suggesting rain has helped cereals after a dry, cold April, Reuters reported.

An estimated 79% of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition, unchanged from the previous week, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal crop report.

That ended four weeks of declining ratings for France's main cereal crop, having endured low rainfall and severe frosts.

FranceAgriMer does not give reasons for rating trends in its weekly updates, but officials this week said that the return of rain had stabilised growing conditions.

The good/excellent scores for winter barley and durum wheat were also unchanged on the week, at 76% and 69% respectively.

For spring barley, the corresponding rating rose to 85% from 82% after holding steady the previous week, FranceAgriMer's report showed.

Widespread rain this week and more showers forecast for next week could further boost soil moisture, though the grain market is also monitoring cool temperatures for any potential delay to crop development.

Crop ratings in France, the European Union's biggest grain producer and exporter, remain much higher than a year ago, when crops suffered from ...More info on site

Whisky news Australia: Australian Distillers Association welcomes federal budget boost
After years of lobbying by the Australian drinks industry, the federal government will allow eligible distillers to receive a full refund of any excise duty they pay, up to an annual cap of A$350,000 as part of the 2021-22 budget, goodfood.com.au reported on May 13.

Until now, local brewers and distillers have only been able to receive a repayment of 60 per cent of the excise they pay up to an annual cap of A$100,000.

The boost has been welcomed by the Australian Distillers Association, whose president Stuart Gregor says the decision provides relief for hundreds of craft distillers around the country that have been severely affected by COVID-19.

There are more than 300 distillers across Australia, with about two-thirds in remote and regional areas.

The amended excise cap brings the tax incentives offered to the spirits industry in line with that of small wine and beer makers.

"It means craft distillers will have more capital available to help their businesses grow and to employ more locals – bringing important economic benefits through job creation, expanding farm production, regional tourism and hospitality for our communities," Gregor says.

The move comes as Roy Morgan released data from April showing the number of Australians who drink alcohol has ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Beer giant Lion looking for new CEO
Beer giant Lion is on the hunt for a new chief executive after Stuart Irvine signalled he would be stepping down after eight years at the helm of the company which owns beer brands Tooheys, XXXX Gold, West End and James Boag, The Australian Financial Review reported on May 14.

The company has slimmed down after the A$560 million sale of its Lion Dairy & Drinks milk and yoghurt operations to Vegemite owner Bega Cheese, which was finalised earlier this year. That gave Bega big brands such as Dairy Farmers, Yoplait, Big M, Masters and Farmers Union.

Mr Irvine said it was the right time to start the process for a transition to a new boss at Lion to oversee the next leg of the company’s strategy after a busy few years.

That included the acquisition of a Colorado-based craft beer company, New Belgium Brewing in 2019 to fire up growth as the mainstream beer market across the industry kept declining.

Lion chairman Rod Eddington said Mr Irvine had been a strong leader through a time of unprecedented change across the food and beverage sectors.

Lion is owned by Japanese brewing conglomerate Kirin Corp, which completed a full takeover of the company in 2009.

“After eight ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Early spring grain sowing almost completed
Ukrainian farms have almost completed 2021 early spring grain sowing, seeding more than 1.9 million hectares of various crops as of May 13, the agriculture ministry said on May 14.

The area included 1.33 million hectares of barley, 229,600 hectares of peas, 186,800 hectares of oats and 174,700 hectares of spring wheat, the ministry said in a statement.

It said farmers had also sown 3.9 million hectares of corn, equating to 74% of the planned area.

The economy ministry has said that favourable weather could help Ukraine to harvest at least 75 million tonnes of grain this year, versus 65 million tonnes in 2020.

Scientists expect the harvest to reach up to 71 million tonnes.

The agriculture ministry said the overall grain area is likely to total 15.5 million hectares this year, including 7.6 million of spring grains.

The spring sowing area is expected to include 1.388 million hectares of barley, 176,600 hectares of wheat, 5.327 million hectares of corn, 194,050 hectares of oats and 235,400 hectares of peas.

The ministry said farms had also sown 4.6 million hectares of sunflower, equating to 72% of the expected area, and completed sugar beet sowing at 226,200 hectares.

The economy ministry has said that a drop in the sugar beet ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Hite Jinro Co. starts exporting its Terra lager
Hite Jinro Co., South Korea's second-largest beverage company, said on May 12 it has kicked off exports of its popular lager beer brand Terra, the Yonhap News reported.

Hite Jinro said it will export the first batch of 1.2 million Terra bottles to the United States, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Sales of the Terra lager beer will start in Hong Kong this month, with the product likely to hit store shelves in the U.S. and Singapore after mid-June.

Hite Jinro said it has picked the three regions because awareness of South Korea alcohol is high there and demand for Terra is strong.

With the start of Terra exports, the company said, it will ramp up efforts to increase consumer interest in Korean beer products.

Cumulative sales of the Terra lager beer have exceed 1.65 billion bottles since its debut in March 2019.
