Brewery news USA, AR: New breweries planned across Arkansas
Craft beer in Arkansas has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 10 years, the Fayetteville Flyer reported on May 14.

In 2011 there were only six breweries in the state. Today there are 47, with another due to open tomorrow, and several more on the way.

Here’s a rundown of the breweries that have opened (or plan to open) this year.

Native Dog Brewing opened in Camden on January 30th. Pharmacists Bobby and Lauren Glaze launched the south Arkansas brewery after deciding it was better to dispense beer than medication. The brewery’s mascot is Baxter, a stray dog the couple picked up while interning at a pharmacy on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota.

Jacksonville’s Blade & Barrel Brewing Co. opened on March 11. It’s a unique setup, with a full-service barbershop and kitchen. Jay Ragsdale, one of the brewers at Blade & Barrel, previously brewed at Diamond Bear Brewing Co. and was a part of the group that tried to launch Blood Eagle Brewing Co. in Little Rock a few years ago.

Three Birds Brewing Co. opens today in El Dorado. Co-owner Brad Lange has already brewed a collaboration beer with nearby Camden’s Native Dog. The beer’s name—L.A. Haze—is presumably a reference ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Schussboom Brewing Company to open its doors on June 2
Opening a business during a pandemic can have its challenges. Especially, a project the size of Schussboom Brewing Company. Crews broke ground on the old Shop n Go store in Reno last August and expanded it to 10,000 square feet. Now they are putting the finishing touches on the new brewery and restaurant, KTVN reported on May 17

"Just making sure everything is picture perfect and where we want it to be so that we're good and ready to open," Briana Wagner, President of Schussboom Brewing Company said. "I know people are super excited, as are we and I think our timing is wrapping up just perfectly with the vaccine rollout, with the mandates being lifted and with summer time."

The business will open its doors June 2 but its eight recipes of beers will not be available yet. The first batches will start brewing this Saturday and should be done in late June to mid-July.

"We will have great beers as well as craft cocktails and wine in our restaurant open, and then as our beers are done, then we'll start releasing those but we want to make sure that they're perfect," Wagner said.

That delay is one of several challenges created by ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AR: The Three Birds Brewing Company holds ribbon-cutting ceremony in El Dorado
The Three Birds Brewing Company, along with the El Dorado-Union County Chamber of Commerce, held its ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 14, the same day as the brewery’s grand opening, the El Dorado News-Times reported.

The name Three Birds pays homage to the number of children business owners Brad and Rachel Lange have. It is also an homage to a Bob Marley song, “Three Little Birds,” that the married couple enjoys. They have some of the song’s lyrics framed within the establishment.

To help welcome the brewery as a Chamber member, other Chamber members and business owners were in attendance and bought some of the craft beer offerings to celebrate the day.

Three Birds Brewing Company is located at 1805 N. West Ave.

Brewery news Canada, NB: Saint Andrews Brewing Company produces its first batch of kegged beer
Just in time for patio season, Saint Andrews has its own craft brewery, country94.ca reported on May 15.

The Saint Andrews Brewing Company has produced its first batch of kegs – starting with the Herringbone Pub Ale, an English-style bitter and the Wharfbound Hazy Pale Ale – now available at the Red Herring pub.

Ian Covey, one of the brewery’s co-founders, says they plan to cycle through different styles as the seasons change.

Covey has been in the craft brewing industry for around seven years, and began working to open a brewery in Charlotte County back in 2017.

“The next evolution for people in the industry long enough is they want to be their own boss and start their own brewery,” he said.

It wasn’t until Covey met his eventual cofounders Dwayne and Jessica Doucette during the summer of 2018 that the Saint Andrews Brewing Company began to take off.

The owners’ goal is to eventually be able to grow enough to have a dedicated space that can become a part of the seaside community.

“Mostly we want to give people something that they can be proud of,” Covey said. “We want to create a community brewery that people are going to be able to come in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Paddled South Brewing ready to open its doors in High Point
A new craft beer brewery two years in the making is ready to open its doors in downtown High Point, the Yahoo News reported on May 15.

Paddled South Brewing has announced it will open May 27 at 602 N. Main St.

"We've been working on it just about two years now," said Patrick Watterson, who co-owns the brewery with Dave Nissen. "Of course, the challenge was getting things going and then COVID hit and kind of shut down everything. But timing-wise, it's probably worked out better."

The brewery is leasing a 1,600-square-foot space next to Atlantic Realty and Property Management.

"The space is in a very unique building. The building is from 1935 and we've got 14-foot ceilings with it, so it's a very open concept," Watterson said.

The interior includes a mural that's 50 feet long and there are two large glass garage doors in the front and rear of the building.

The inside includes a taproom with space for 49 people, and there is also outdoor space for seating.

The brewery plans on having nine or 10 beers on tap, all of which will be the owners' recipes. Nissen is the head brewer.

They have an interest in multiple beer styles, such as traditional IPAs, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Bummin’ Beaver Brewery hoping to open around July 4
Bummin’ Beaver Brewery is built on, of all things, tragedy, clevelan.com reported on May 17.

A failed attempt by a beaver to cross a road near the Mahoning River offered inspiration for the owners of the planned Auburn Township brewery.

Tony Solitro’s day job with Thomas Steel Strip in Warren occasionally takes him to the area to collect water samples. Side streams snake their way from the river, and there’s a nearby dam.

“I would see them once in a while,” Solitro said. “One day I went down there and the beaver tried to cross the road, and someone ran over its tail. He crawled to the side of the road and died. I’m looking, and I’m just bummed out. Beaver … and boom!”

It’s been said inspiration comes in all ways, and this was certainly non-traditional.

“Hence the logo with the X’d-out eyes,” said Solitro, who owns the brewery with Mike and Dave Rutana.

Solitro, a chemist, is from Portage County originally. Dave Rutana grew up in Bedford Heights and then Maple Heights, and worked at IT executive levels. Mike, his son, is a geologist whose day-job schedule allows him to check out breweries all over.

The trio hopes to open around July 4, but that’s ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Heineken not to challenge a craft brewer’s “Tropical Bay IPA” trademark
A Heineken subsidiary has agreed not to challenge a craft brewer’s “Tropical Bay IPA” trademark, laying to rest the bulk of a US federal lawsuit, the World Intellectual Property Review reported on May 17.

Heineken-backed Cervecería La Tropical (La Tropical) confirmed its decision on May 14 at the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

In 2020, Tropical unveiled plans to launch a new brewery in Miami and threatened to sue craft brewer Biscayne Bay, the maker of Tropical Bay IPA for trademark infringement.

Biscayne Bay countered by filing a complaint at the district court in Florida, asking for declaratory judgment of trademark non-infringement for its own mark and trademark invalidity for La Tropical’s trademark.

It outlined how Biscayne Bay was a small business brewery founded in Miami in 2012, and that many of its employees and stakeholders have proud, Latin and Cuban American heritage, “roots that form the flavours of their entire range of craft beers and led to the development of the Tropical Bay IPA brand beer” in 2017.

The suit also claimed that the Heineken unit used “aggressive bully tactics” to get them to change the name of Biscayne’s Tropical Bay IPA beer.

It further alleged that the brewer lost a ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Beer consumption down, wine and spirits up during Covid-19 period
Data from Roy Morgan’s Alcohol Consumption Report showed that there were significant increases in wine and spirits consumption (up 3.3 percentage points over the year) in Australia during the COVID-19 period, the Echo Net Daily reported on May 18.

The number of Australians drinking wine increased from 8,065,000 (41 per cent of Australians aged 18+) to 8,814,000 (44.3 per cent). Although more women than men drink wine, the increase in the number of men drinking wine was larger than for women.

According to Roy Morgan CEO, Michele Levine, ‘the number of people drinking wine also increased across the age spectrum, and perhaps surprisingly the largest increase by age group was for those aged 80+, which is up 6.7 per cent on a year ago.’

In addition, spirit-drinkers increased to 6,277,000 (31.5 per cent) from 5,465,000 (27.8 per cent). The incidence of drinking spirits was up for both genders and across all legal age groups, with the largest increase by age for people 25–34 (up 7.7 per cent on a year ago).

During the pandemic period there was a nation-wide lockdown in March to May 2020, and a longer second lockdown in Victoria between July and October, plus smaller lockdowns, during which ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Trappist monks of the Abbey of Rochefort win another important court battle for water
The Trappist monks of the Abbey of Rochefort in Namur province have won another important court battle in a dispute with Lhoist Group, the world’s largest producer of chalk, The Brussels Times reported on May 14.

The monks of the Abbey of Notre-Dame of Saint-Remy produce some of the most celebrated beers in the world, using water from the Tridaine spring. But Lhoist wants to continue producing chalk from the area until 2046, which would involve redirecting the course of the spring.

The monks took their case to court, relying on a legal document from 1833 which forbids anyone, including the owner of the quarry Lhoist wants to extend, from changing the course of the spring.

The document effectively guarantees the right of the abbey to receive the waters of the Tridaine spring as it arises naturally at the surface. The 1833 deed, which dates back more than a century before the quarrying was ever begun and 66 years before the founding of the current brewery, protects this right to a natural source of water.

According to Gert De Rouck, a brewing expert at the University of Leuven speaking to VRT Radio at the time of the original judgement, water is “an underestimated raw ...More info on site
