Brewery news UK: Pub operator Marston’s reveals £105.5 mln pre-tax loss but post-lockdown sales inspire optimism
While pub operator Marston’s has revealed a £105.5 mln pre-tax loss in the 26 weeks to 3 April, the firm cites post-lockdown sales hitting 80% of pre-pandemic levels as cause for optimism, The Morning Advertiser reported on May 19.

According to its most recent interim results statement for the 26 weeks to 3 April, the Wolverhampton-based operator of 1,500 pubs revealed a total pre-tax loss of £105.5 mln – versus £31.1 mln recorded during the equivalent period in the previous financial year.

On top of this, Marston’s revealed that its total revenue fell from £343.3 mln during the first half of the previous financial year, to £55.1 mln during the most recent half-year.

However, the firm posted a net profit of £199.3 mln – compared to a £28 mln loss made during the equivalent period during the previous financial year – due to £291 mln made from the its disposal of brewing business into the Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company joint venture.

Marston’s also revealed that it had drawn down £164 mln of a £280 mln bank facility, which is in place until 2024, providing headroom of £116 mln.

Previously, the firm revealed that it made a total loss of £397.1 mln during ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia & New Zealand: Brewers may have to follow more mandatory labelling standards
Food Standards Australia New Zealand is undertaking industry consultation as it proposes to introduce further mandatory labelling requirements onto alcohol products, the Australian Brews News reported on May 20.

After the industry battled over pregnancy warning labelling last year, the focus has now turned on nutrition labelling.

These new rules will force brewers and other alcohol producers to include energy, carbohydrate and sugar content information on beer packaging. Alcohol products are currently exempt from having to provide nutrition information.

In recent months, FSANZ engaged with key industry stakeholders including the Independent Brewers Association, the Brewers Association, consisting of Lion, Carlton & United Breweries and Coopers, and the Brewers Guild of New Zealand. These industry organisations are currently making submissions.

“We expect to report to the FSANZ Board on this initial work in early June 2021, and subject to their consideration commence a second stage of work to explore regulatory and/or non-regulatory options for energy labelling of alcoholic beverages, and identify a preferred approach,” FSANZ said in a statement to Brews News.

The proposals have been met with dismay from the industry which was already forced to make its case against mandatory labelling with pregnancy warning labels. The IBA worked out would cost A$100 million over ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Fire breaks out at iconic Guinness Brewery
The iconic Guinness Brewery, and national treasure of the Emerald Isle, suffered from a small fire at St James’s Gate, just weeks before the pubs reopen. Firefighters rushed to the scene at the brewery near the iconic Guinness Storehouse in Dublin shortly after 10am on May 19, The Journal reports.

At around midday, a “small fire” was extinguished at the brewery and is understood not to have affected the brewing operations. The incident had been contained in the barley roaster drum, and thankfully, reduced the risk of spreading to other rooms or nearby buildings.

Nearby stations, Dolphin’s Barn and Tara Street sent three Dublin Fire Brigade units to the scene. Accompanied with breathing apparatuses, firefighters entered the building, just off School Street, to tackle the small fire.

A spokesperson of Diageo told The Journal that a “small fire” had broken out “inside a barley roaster drum at Saint James’s Gate”. The incident was contained quickly, and we were back in operation at our roast house in a matter of a few hours, with no impact on brewing operations.”

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said units were called to a fire at the brewery, shortly after 10.00 am yesterday morning. The fire was located ...More info on site
