USA: January-April and April alone beer shipments increase versus last year
|
The US Beer Institute published an unofficial estimate of domestic tax paid shipments by beer brewers for April 2021 on May 27.
The April 2021 estimate is 14,600,000 barrels, an increase of 8.6% compared to April 2020 removals of 13,438,000.
The January-April figure is estimated at 54.268 mln barrels, up 4.5% versus the first four months of 2020.

USA: Beer industry supports more than 2 mln jobs
|
The US Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association released their biennial Beer Serves America report on the economic importance of the nation’s beer industry. Bars, restaurants, sporting events and concerts are critical to the U.S. economy, and the beer industry plays a key role in supporting jobs in the hospitality industry as well as jobs in farming, manufacturing, construction, transportation, and a myriad of other sectors.
The study found the U.S. beer industry supports more than two million good-paying, local jobs and contributes more than $330 billion to the US economy. Brewers and beer distributors directly employ nearly 210,000 Americans, and each job in the brewing industry generates another 30 jobs in other industries, including farming, transportation and hospitality. The impact of the beer industry is equivalent to 1.6% of the United States’ gross domestic product.
“As our nation builds back from the pandemic, we look forward to returning to bars, restaurants, stadiums and concerts. Ireland: Consumption of all types of alcohol falls between January and March
|
The amount of alcohol consumed in Ireland in the first quarter of this year was down substantially on the same period in 2020, the Irish Examiner reported on May 26.
The consumption of all types of alcohol - beer, cider, wine and spirits - fell between January and March 2021, according to the latest Revenue figures.
The 19.7% decline in the consumption of alcohol has been attributed to the closure of the hospitality sector due to Covid-19.
Despite commentary to the contrary, the Director of Drinks Ireland, Patricia Callan, said alcohol consumption continues to decline as a direct result of the pandemic.
"While this decline was accelerated by Covid, it should be noted that it is in line with the trend of consumption falling generally in Ireland over the past 30 years," said Ms Callan.
Average alcohol consumption in 2020 declined by 6.6% to its lowest level in 30 years and almost 30% lower than the peak of 2001.
New Revenue Clearance data shows beer and cider were hit hard with sales down by 34.5% and 15.9% respectively.
With 60% of beer sales and 45% of cider sales typically in pubs, restaurants and hotels, this decline is unsurprising.

|
Priests of Belgium’s Grimbergen Abbey have begun brewing for the first time in more than two centuries, with a microbrewery making special editions of the mass-market beer bearing their abbey’s name, Reuters reported on May 27.
The abbey, whose emblem is a phoenix with the Latin motto “Ardet nec consumitur” (Burned but not destroyed), was twice burned down and ransacked by French troops in 1798, ending a tradition of beer-making dating back to the 12th century.
Karel Stautemas, the white-robed abbey sub-prior who is on the verge of completing brewing studies, said beer-making was a “second life” for Belgian abbeys and the community of 15 Norbertine canons was enthusiastic about its return.
“The core business was religion, but brewing was necessary because water at the moment in the Middle Ages wasn’t drinkable and also it was a kind of payment,” he said.
The abbey, founded in 1128, has been tied to commercial brewers since 1958 when local firm Maes paid the monks to use the Grimbergen name and phoenix emblem on its “abbey beer”. Denmark’s Carlsberg now has the global rights.
The new microbrewery aims to combine the 900-year tradition of beer making, evident in books in the abbey’s library, with new techniques and innovation.

Vietnam: Survey shows Vietnamese people consumed less rice but more beer and meat last year
|
Although incomes have fallen because of the pandemic, a survey has found living standard improvements with Vietnamese people consuming less rice but more beer and meat, VnExpress International reported on May 28.
The GSO estimates per capita monthly income fell 2 percent from the previous year to VND4.2 million ($182), because of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the 2020 living standards survey conducted among 47,000 households nationwide by the General Statistics Office (GSO).
The survey found that per capita monthly rice consumption declined from 9.7 kilograms in 2010 to 7.6 kilograms last year.
On the other hand, per capita meat consumption rose from 1.8 kilograms per month in 2010 to 2.3 kilograms last year. Per capita beer and alcohol consumption reached 1.3 litres per month last year from 0.9 litres in 2018.
The GSO reported that there were significant wealth discrepancies between urban and rural areas. The per capita monthly income in urban areas last year was VND5.5 million, 1.6 times higher than that in rural areas.
A HCMC-based economist told VnExpress that farmers should reduce the rice farming and shift to produce with higher returns in order to increase per capita income in rural areas.
Vietnam targets an annual per capita income of $5,000 by 2025.

India: Craft brewers upbeat about the future despite Covid-19 impact

This was to have been the summer of beer, if not for the second wave of Covid-19 tearing through India, Livemint reported on May 27.
Scottish giant Brewdog opened its first brewpub in Mumbai in February. Ironhill soon followed with “the world’s largest microbrewery” in Bengaluru, and as the now-suspended IPL got underway, Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his association with a new beer brand, Copter 7—named for his famous helicopter shot and his jersey number 7.
India, it seems, can’t have too much beer—whether it’s the good, old bottled stuff bought from the corner store or the more upscale craft beer that’s sold as an entire experience. And there’s always room for more as United Breweries’ notes in its 2019-2020 annual report released in June 2020. “Beer industry has registered robust growth in the last one and a half decades. South Africa: Trade in illicit alcohol reaches R20.5 bln, report finds
|
According to a new report - commissioned by the South African alcohol industry - the local trade in illicit alcohol has now reached R20.5 billion, and one in every 4.54 litres of alcohol sold is illegal, News24 reported on May 28.
Illicit alcohol includes counterfeit products, where empty bottles of legitimate brands are refilled with cheaper alcohol, as well as unbranded alcohol, smuggled products and illegal homebrewed alcohol which are sold without paying tax.
South Africa’s illicit alcohol market now makes up 12% of the R177 billion industry and the country’s sales bans during the pandemic have fuelled the trade, says market research firm Euromonitor.
Its report found that the value of South Africa’s illicit alcohol market has been growing at a 17% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since 2017.
The report was commissioned by the South African Liquor Brand Owners' Association (SALBA), the Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) and Vinpro.
South Africa’s liquor industry has lamented the losses it suffered during a series of bans imposed by government over the past year to keep hospital beds clear of alcohol-related trauma cases and available for Covid-19 patients.
Smuggling was the largest form of illicit activity, growing by 13.4% (CAGR) in volume since 2017.

Australia & China: Australia seeks WTO panel in barley dispute with China
|
Australia will ask the World Trade Organization (WTO) to establish a dispute settlement panel to resolve concerns about anti-dumping and countervailing duties imposed on Australian barley by China, Trade Minister Dan Tehan said on May 28, Reuters reported.
"Australia remains open to further discussions with China with a view to resolving this issue," Tehan said in a statement.
Australia late last year launched a formal appeal to the WTO seeking a review of China's decision to impose hefty tariffs on imports of Australian barley.

France: Barley, wheat ratings rise after May rain
|
The condition of French soft wheat and barley crops improved in the week to May 24, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on May 28, in another sign that rainfall this month has alleviated dryness from earlier in spring, Nasdaq reported.
An estimated 80% of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition, up from 79% the previous week, FranceAgriMer said.
The state of soft wheat, the main cereal crop in the European Union's biggest grain producer, had already stabilised in early May after declining sharply last month during dry, cold spells.
For winter barley, the good/excellent score rose by 2 points to 77% while the spring barley rating edged up by 1 point to 85%.
While frequent showers this month have brought beneficial moisture to crops, persistent cool temperatures have slowed crop growth and raised the possibility of a late harvest.
For soft wheat, 47% of crops had reached the heading stage, well below 94% a year ago, FranceAgriMer estimated.
For winter barley, usually the first major cereal to be harvested in France at the start of summer, the heading stage was showing a five-day lag compared with the average of the past five years, the office said.
