USA & Mexico: Mexico’s president confirms Constellation Brand to build a brewery in the country
|
Mexico's president said on May 28 that U.S. brewer Constellation Brands will build a new brewery somewhere in the southeastern part of the country, following a deal he said his government has reached with the company, Reuters reported.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador made the announcement during his regular morning news conference, but did not offer further details on the project.
Constellation did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the president's remarks.
Last year, a previous plan by Constellation to build a brewery in the northern city of Mexicali, near the border with the United States, was rejected in a local public referendum.
On May 28, the president touted plentiful water supplies in Mexico's southeast, which was a major sticking point when the project was slated for the arid north.
Constellation brews several brands of Mexican beer, including Corona and Pacifico, exclusively for the U.S. market, which was one factor that made the original border location attractive logistically.
In April, local media reported that Constellation told its shareholders it was searching for a new site in Mexico but did not specify possible locations.

Canada, BC: Wild North Brewing now open in Creston
|
A new brewery that aims to “bring an authentic craft beer culture to our hometown” is now open in the community of Creston in British Columbia’s Kootenay region, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 28.
Wild North Brewing has been founded by a group of long-time friends including Craig and Lisa Wood, Tyler Mailhot, Jon Haberstock, Mark Hug, and Aaron Groenhuysen, with brewmaster Casey Staple overseeing the brewhouse.
Open since May 20th, Wild North is offering a selection of beers including Mt Loki Lager (4.5% abv), Lockhart West Coast IPA (6.3% abv), Pilot Bay Hazy IPA (6.5% abv), Kuskanook Dry-Hopped Sour (5.2% abv), Kootenay River Raspberry Sour (5.3% abv), and Darkwoods Porter (4.7% abv) by the glass, in tasting flights, and for growler fills.
Wild North Brewing is located at 125 16th Avenue North in Creston, and is open 7 days a week.

USA, IA: Big Grove Brewery to expand to Des Moines
|
A popular Eastern Iowa brewery is reaching across the state with plans to move into the capital city, desmoinesregister.com reported on June 1.
Big Grove Brewery will be expanding to Des Moines in an undisclosed location, Rachel Furman, a brewery manager at the Iowa City location, confirmed. She said plans are underway to bring Big Grove to central Iowa between March and May 2022.
The team at Big Grove has had its sights set on Iowa expansion since opening the original location in 2013. The 5,200 square-foot brewpub is located in Solon, Iowa.
In 2017, co-founders Matt and Faye Swift and Doug Goettsch added a second, 26,000-square-foot facility in Iowa City. The Iowa City taproom offers a large patio with yard games and a menu from Executive Chef Benjamin Smart, who was recognized as 2018 Restaurateur of the Year by the Iowa Restaurant Association.
Big Grove signed a five-year agreement with the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa in 2019, which named the brewery as RAGBRAI's main beer sponsor. The brewery developed the official beer of RAGBRAI, a golden ale called Tailwind, in tribute to the weeklong event.

USA, NC: Tobacco Wood Brewing Company launching second location in Research Triangle Park
|
The first female, veteran owned brewery in North Carolina is opening a second location in Research Triangle Park, WTVD-TV reported on June 1.
Tobacco Wood Brewing Company will open its doors at location number two on June 2.
"Everybody is so anxious to get started, so you've got that high anxiety, excitement going on," owner Mara Shelton said.
Shelton brought the first female, veteran owned brewery to the state with her first location in Oxford, and she didn't expect to open a second location for a few years. But when the opportunity arose at Research Triangle Park, she said she couldn't pass it up.
"Watching the growth with all the apartments going in, the single family homes, the business expansion, we're like this is the time to go," Shelton said.
Located in the Meridian Business Park on the west end of RTP, it'll be near Apple's new campus as well.
Shelton said the timing of the new location's grand opening is perfect too--coming as more people begin venturing outside as COVID-19 restrictions are rolled back.
"It's kind of a huge sigh of relief truthfully. I think everybody is ready to be out. It'll be nice to see peoples' smiles," Shelton said.

Add another brewery to the list of those opening in the coming months in the Finger Lakes.
This time Moravia will see a new location open as a barn is converted on Rockefeller Rd. by Owasco Lake Brewing.
The Citizen reported over the weekend that the business will be led by Dillon Langtry, who went to Moravia High School.

Malaysia: Breweries still poised to post strong yearly growth - analysts
|
Breweries are still poised to post strong yearly growth in FY21, thanks to a gradual recovery in sales volume, despite the sudden closure of their operations announced on June 1, said CGS-CIMB.
In a note, its analyst Walter Aw said the sales improvement will be underpinned by three factors — firstly, brewers will have higher finished-goods inventories in anticipation of another lockdown, to prevent insufficient stock at off-trade sales locations which happened during the first Movement Control Order (MCO 1.0); secondly, more off-trade sales points such as e-commerce platforms are available to meet the needs of consumers; and thirdly, there are upcoming global sporting events such as Euro 2020, which are key drivers of beer sales.
“At this juncture, we make no changes to our FY21-23F EPS [earnings per share] estimates, pending further updates on this matter. We retain our 'neutral' call on the brewery sector. We have 'hold' recommendations for both Heineken Malaysia Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery (M) Bhd.

UK: Craft brewers facing continuing pressure as the country reopens
|
As drinkers flock to reopened pubs and restaurants, Paul Walker of Hunter’s microbrewery in Devon expects soon to start hiring new staff. But less than three months ago, he relied on the goodwill of crowdfunders to bring the business back from the brink, The Financial Times reported on May 31.
“We’ve begged, borrowed and bargained to reach this point, but when the money runs out options are few,” said the brewery in its March crowdfunding campaign. “This has left us very vulnerable.”
Craft breweries that multiplied during a years-long boom are toasting the return of socialising after a precarious year. But even as they reopen, brewers face continuing pressures, from potential tax changes to competition from craft brands bought out by international brewing groups.
Most have been supported by UK government loans and support schemes, but operators fear that as that tapers out, small brewers could face tough decisions on the viability of their businesses.
The number of UK breweries declined in 2020 for the first time in 18 years, after more than doubling in size in the previous decade to 1,823, according to data from the Campaign for Real Ale.

Azerbaijan: Beer output up 32.5% in Q1 2021
|
Azerbaijan increased the volume of wine production by 30.9 percent in the first three months of 2021, Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov announced via Twitter on May 31.
Jabbarov noted that production of beer increased by 32.5 percent, while brandy and brandy materials by 10.6 times compared to the same period last year.
He stressed that “reforms aimed at protecting the interests of domestic market producers and transparency in the excise products sector are bearing fruit.”
In yet another Twit post, the minister noted that the amount of taxable tobacco products increased by 94.1 percent in the first three months of 2021.
“The turnover of tobacco products producers increased by 82.4 percent. The excise tax revenues increased by 54.1 percent compared to the previous year,” Jabbarov added.
The minister underlined that the main driving force of economic growth in Azerbaijan is a transformation from oil to the non-oil economy.

Japan: Kirin Holdings starts using grams to display alcohol content of beverages
|
Kirin Holdings Company, Ltd. has started using grams, in addition to percentage and proof, to indicate the alcohol content of beverages sold in Japan, The Japan News reported on May 31.
The measure is expected to help consumers determine the alcohol content of beverages they are to consume without making calculations, and to help prevent excessive drinking.
Kirin started displaying the alcohol content by grams for most of its products on its website on May 27. A 350-milliliter can of Ichiban Shibori beer, for example, states that it contains 5% alcohol, but the website shows that beer has 14 grams of pure alcohol per can.
Indicating the alcohol content on such products is required by law, but there was criticism that doing so by percentage or proof made it difficult to know how many grams of alcohol were actually consumed.
In response, Kirin voluntarily started using grams to indicate alcohol content. The company plans to put the alcohol content by weight directly on product labels by 2024.
In March, Asahi Breweries, Ltd. also began displaying alcohol content by weight on its website. Suntory Holdings Ltd. and Sapporo Breweries Ltd. are expected to follow suit by the end of the year.

Ireland: Guinness brewing millions of extra pints ahead of summer reopening

Guinness have confirmed they will be five million extra pints at St. James’ Gate in anticipation of the high demand this summer as pubs reopen, the Irish Mirror reported on June 1.
Ireland’s pubs are set to be given the green light to reopen on June 7 after months shut due to Covid lockdowns.
And now the brewer of the nation's favourite tipple is coming to the rescue as it is ramping up their operations to ensure that fresh pints of the black stuff are available nationwide.
The company has been preparing for the day the pubs reopen their doors as they announced a €14 million fund called “Raising the Bar” last June so the pubs could emerge stronger from the pandemic.
This initiative has been providing the Irish pub and hospitality trade with vital services and expertise, allowing them to operate safely and securely.
Guinness has provided equipment and confidence building measures, aiding outlets to reopen this summer and to operate on a safe and sustainable basis.
The provisions for publicans range from technical solutions, such as access to online booking systems, training for staff and providing the essential physical equipment and infrastructure required for outdoor socialising.

Fiji: Local beer running out of stock with Paradise Beverages Fiji Limited closed since 19th April
|
Paradise Beverages Fiji Limited has been closed both in terms of production and sales since 19th April, FBC News reported on May 31.
It says that they have been significantly impacted by the second wave of COVID-19 and due to this local beer has been running out of stock in many shops and even in large supermarket chains.
In a statement, the manufactures confirm that they have made applications to reopen, however, these have been unsuccessful
Paradise Beverages say this is an extremely challenging period for everyone and their thoughts go out to the people of Fiji who have been affected by COVID-19.
It adds that their focus right now is protecting the health of the people, both mentally and physically, and supporting our customers in any way they can within the restrictions currently in place.
