Brewery news Malaysia: Analysts maintains 'buy' on Carlsberg amid manufacturing shutdown
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd will mitigate the negative impact on its sales with off-trade and e-ecommerce channels as its manufacturing operations shutter during the first phase of the ongoing movement control order, The Star Online reported on June 4.

"Given similar operational disruptions during MCO 1.0, measures have already been put in place to minimise business impact, especially in terms of inventory stock movement and distribution to off-trade channels," said Maybank Investment Bank Research.

The research house opines that with about four weeks of inventory at present, the brewer will comfortably pull through the two-week lockdown period.

Carlsberg does not have plans to undergo further restructuring in FY21 and has reached an optimal operational ratio to position for robust growth in sales volume in a post-pandemic environment.

However, Maybank IB noted that if movement restrictions are extended, advertising and promotion expenses may decline upon cancellations of on-the-ground marketing engagements.

"To abide by social distancing measures, CAB will move its promotional campaigns back to digital platforms while new product launches will also centre around off-trade channels (eg. Connor’s stout in a can) until its on-trade channels are allowed to re-open," it said.

Maybank IB maintained its "buy" call on Carlsberg with a discounted cashflow target price of RM24.10.

Brewery news Malaysia: Heineken stops brewing in Sungei Way, Selangor as government tries to curb sharp rise in Covid-19 infection
Heineken Malaysia Bhd has suspended operations at its brewery in Sungei Way, Selangor after the government imposed mandatory halt on most businesses to curb the sharp rise in Covid-19 infection in the country, The Star Online reported on June 4.

"The mandatory closures and restrictions pursuant to the MCO 3.0 are expected to have a significant impact on the market in general as well as the Company’s operations and business," the brewer told Bursa Malaysia today.

"The Company will make the necessary announcement on any material developments relating to the above matter, as and when appropriate," it added.

The government has imposed a full lockdown from June 1 to June 14.

Brewery news Russia: Carlsberg to increase the number of craft beer stores in Russia
Carlsberg Group plans to increase the number of craft beer stores in Russia by four times in 2021, ESM reported on June 2 citing a report in the publication Pivnoe Delo.

The brewer entered the craft beer market in Russia by supporting the development of Tank & Hopper's franchise network through its subsidiary, HoppyUnion.

Currently, there are 28 craft beer stores in Russia operating under the Tank & Hopper brand, the report said.

In 2019, the first Tank & Hopper store opened in St. Petersburg, with the minimum investment for a franchisee estimated at RUB 1.5 million.

Franchisees receive 0.5 to 4% of revenue in royalties, focusing on breaking even in the first three months of operations.

The franchise network is best suited in St. Petersburg and the Far East, the report noted.

The expansion project is set to commence this month, as the group expects to add nine more stores in June.

According to Carlsberg Group's plans, the chain was supposed to grow to 50 stores last year, but investors became cautious due to the pandemic.

The reports quoted Hoppy Union CEO, Igor Mayorkin, saying, "Many of our partners are connected with HoReCa. This segment has been hit hard. Now our task is to bring the number ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I agrees to exclusively distribute Mahou beer brands in the UK
Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I has announced a new partnership with Spanish lager brand Mahou, Better Retailing reported on June 4.

The partnership will see the supplier be exclusively responsible for the sale, marketing and distribution of Mahou in the UK across retail and hospitality, from 19 July.

Mahou Cinco Estrellas is the flagship brand of the Mahou-San Miguel brewery in Spain, and is Spain’s no.1 beer across the on- and off-trade.

Budweiser will support the beer’s rollout with an investment programme over the coming months.

Paula Lindenberg, president of Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I, said: “Mahou is an incredibly exciting addition to the Budweiser Brewing Group family. Consumer preference for premium brands has continued to accelerate in the UK, with World Lager as the fastest growing beer segment.

Erik d’Auchamp, international business unit managing director at Mahou San Miguel, added: “The growing popularity of World Lager provides a big opportunity for retailers and pubs alike and Mahou Cinco Estrellas offers something truly unique in the World Lager Space; a contemporary beer reflecting ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Barry & Fitzwilliam to distribute Paulaner beer in Ireland
According to drinksindustryireland.ie, Barry & Fitzwilliam has become the distributor of Paulaner in Ireland.

For the last twenty years, Heineken held the distribution rights to the German beer.

The move follows the recent sale of Heineken's 30% stake in the beer.

Paulaner, a wheat beer from Munich, has been brewed since 1634 and is Oktoberfest’s best-selling beer.

The beer is brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, Bavaria’s 500 year-old Purity Law.

Under this law, only four ingredients may be used in the brewing process; water, malt, hops, and yeast.

Considered an ideal summer beer, over two million litres of the beer leave the brewery each year destined for over 70 countries.

Plans to relaunch Paulaner as well as the non-alcoholic version into the on-trade in Ireland will take place when the on-trade returns to normality.

Speaking to Drinks Industry Ireland, Barry & Fitzwilliam managing director Michael Barry said, "We're going to concentrate on Paulaner and Paulaner 0.0% bottles for the summer but we'll be relaunching the draught product in September".

Barry & Fitzwilliam is Ireland's largest independent premium drinks distributor.

Representing a large portfolio of international brands, the company carries over 120 premium wines, spirits, and beer brands.

Operating from extensive warehousing and administration facilities based in Cork and Dublin, Barry ...More info on site

Barley news France: Like in April, May barley shipments all destined for China
French soft wheat shipments outside the European Union fell to their lowest in at least a decade for May, with steady loadings for Algeria standing out in an end of season lull, Refinitiv data showed.

Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the EU-27 and Britain totalled 273,600 tonnes in May, the 11th month of the 2020/21 season, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv loading data showed.

That was the lowest May volume in Refinitiv data going back to 2009/10 and less than half April's 665,600 tonnes.

Shipments tend to slow towards the end of the season as supplies diminish and availability has been further curbed by a smaller French harvest last summer.

French soft wheat exports outside the EU are expected at a four-year low over the full July-June 2020/21 season.

Algeria accounted for three quarters of the May soft wheat shipments from France, importing 212,900 tonnes.

No shipments were sent to Morocco in May after the country led in volumes from France in the previous two months, while a pause in wheat loadings for China also continued after high volumes earlier in the season.

Cuba was the second largest non-EU importer of French soft wheat, accounting for 25,000 tonnes.

Feed barley exports reached 236,500 tonnes in May, ...More info on site

Barley news France: Barley crop ratings edge down in FranceAgriMer’s latest report
An estimated 80% of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition in the week to May 31, unchanged from the previous week, farm office FranceAgriMer said on June 4.

The good/excellent scores for winter and spring barley each declined by 1 point, to 76% and 84% respectively, FranceAgriMer said in a weekly cereal crop report.
