Brewery news Canada, ON: Turkey Shoot Brewing becomes Keswick’s first brewery
The first brewery in Keswick, a community in the south-central Ontario municipality of Georgina, is now open to the public, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 8.

Turkey Shoot Brewing has been founded by Kyle Stewart, Jaclyn Dipietro, and Brennan Roy, and entered the market last summer as a contract brewery while building out its bricks-and-mortar location.

The brewery launched online sales and curbside pick-up in late April, and more recently opened its retail shop for walk-in sales of cans, growlers, and bottles, with a patio and taproom set to follow soon.

In addition to flagship brands Lake Simcoe Lagered Ale (4.8% abv) and Pefferlaw Pale Ale (5% abv), the shop features a rotation of small batch beers that has included Bockelganger Bock (6.8% abv), Jackson’s Point Pilsner (4.2% abv), Wild Turkey IPA (6.5% abv) and others, all featuring 100% Ontario-grown hops.

Turkey Shoot Brewing is located at 482 The Queensway South in Keswick, and is open Thursday to Sunday.

Brewery news USA, CA: Headlands Brewing Company launches in Lafayette
After an eight-month build-out that includes a state-of-the-art tap room and beer garden, Headlands Brewing Company opened on June 4 in Lafayette, giving Contra Costa County residents a great reason to get out and drink a craft beer in the sunshine this weekend, The Mercury News reported.

Fans of Hawk Hill Hefeweizen, Pt. Bonita Pilsner and the other Nor-Cal themed beers that Headlands has been kegging and canning since 2013 can finally enjoy the suds on-site, along with a small menu of snacks and sausages. The brewery opened at 3 p.m. on June 4 at 3420 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, next to Bonehead’s Texas BBQ and Locanda Positano.

In addition to the 20-tap floating draught tower, outdoor patio and fire pits, look for about 10 small-batch ales like Four Peaks Hazy IPA, Lafayette Light Lager and Lightship Sour Pilsner as well as guest beers (Gummy Worms Pale Ale from Sacramento’s New Glory Brewery), local wines and ciders.

Sausages ($8-$16) range from a plain DIY dog with choice of condiments to the Diablo Dog with balsamic onion jam, cream cheese and fresh jalapeño slices, and the Contra Dog, a classic Chicago-style sausage with sliced tomatoes, giardinera, green relish, Hill 88 mustard and sport peppers. Brewery news USA, WA: Kulshan Brewing to open a “pop-up, container brewery” in Bellingham
More than a decade ago, when Georgia Pacific shut down its pulp mill on the Bellingham waterfront, people wondered what would become of the acres and acres of suddenly vacant land. Today, the city is still slowly but purposefully making decisions about developing the 74-acre parcel of prime real estate, the Washington Beer Blog reported on June 5.

Kulshan Brewing just announced that it is part of one of the first steps towards actually doing something with all of that beautiful waterfront real estate. The brewery will open a “pop-up, container brewery,” part of a shipping container village on the site of the former mill. More specifically, it’s a long the Pump Track – an urban mountain bike track that was constructed on the site in 2019.

The company’s third location in Bellingham, Kulshan Brewing’s Trackside Brewery and Beer garden will offer 24,000 square feet of outdoor beer-drinking space. It will be a seasonal affair. Open during the warmer months only. No grand opening date announced yet, but soon.

Trackside will offer a large grassy area for lounging, picnic tables, yard games, a stage for live music, all with a view of the Pump Track, downtown Bellingham and the surrounding waterfront. Kids will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Work on Harbor Brewing Company shifts into high gear
Work to repurpose an old building in Lake Villa's downtown district along Cedar Avenue as a local brewery has shifted into high gear, the Chicago Daily Herald reported on June 7.

Asbestos and lead paint have been removed from the long vacant former Chrysler dealership, and electricians, plumbers and masonry crews are going full-bore in the yawning open space.

"Every day I come here, it looks wildly different," said Kyle Wenzel, owner and head brewer of Harbor Brewing Company in Winthrop Harbor. "We'll hopefully meet the original deadline."

That would be in October, although Wenzel wants to finish the huge project, which involves a complete overhaul of the 1910 building, sooner.

After a long pause during the pandemic, the buzz of activity is welcome news for Wenzel, who will be vastly expanding his operation, and the village, which is providing substantial incentives to help.

Vacant for more than 20 years, the deteriorating building at 136 Cedar Ave. has been considered a key piece in the village's ongoing effort to revitalize its downtown as a center of activities and a place to be.

"They've worked real hard to invest in the building and make it something it isn't today," village Administrator Karl Warwick said. "That place wouldn't ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Central Water Brewing Co. to take over former Captain Pabst Pilot House in Milwaukee
Amherst-based Central Water Brewing Co. plans to take over the former Captain Pabst Pilot House in downtown Milwaukee, where it will open a second brewery and taproom, biztimes.com reported on June 7.

The Pilot House is located at 1037 W. Juneau Ave., in The Brewery district.

Central Waters announced on June 6 on social media it will open the Central Waters Milwaukee Pilot Brewery and Taproom there. This is similar to how Pabst Brewing was using the space until late last year.

Central Waters is aiming to open in late summer or early fall. The company made it clear this will be a new location, and that it would remain based in Amherst. In fact, the Milwaukee location will be making different beers than the one in Amherst, Central Waters added.

“We cannot wait to become a part of the fabric of a city we love so much,” Central Waters wrote. “Cheers to you Milwaukee!”

The brewery has ties to the city. OnMilwaukee noted on June 6 that Central Waters co-owner Anello Mollica was raised in Milwaukee.

The Pilot House was also formerly the First German Methodist Church. It is part of the former Pabst Brewery complex. Pabst abandoned the complex in 1996.

It is now known ...More info on site

After offering takeout at several points through the month of May, Lightship officially opened for seated patio service last Wednesday June 2nd, and is offering a selection of Saltbox beers and other beverages, and a food menu by Sea Jay’s featuring a variety of seafood dishes, sandwiches, snacks and sweet treats.

In addition to the patio, Lightship includes a retail store, an indoor taproom that will open once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, and a pilot brewing system and foeders that will be used to produce small-batch and barrel-aged beers.

Brewery news USA, PA: Recon Brewing planning a third location near South Fayette
Recon Brewing announced on June 4 that they are opening a third location near South Fayette, butlerradio.com reported.

The new location will be inside the Hastings Plan, which is another development by Charter Homes, similar to the Meeder neighborhood in Cranberry Township.

Recon co-owner Dave Bestwick is absolutely thrilled about the new venture.

“It’ll be all the great stuff that people have come to know with Recon, just a little further south,” Bestwick said. “It’s in the middle of a Crossroads community like we have in Cranberry right now. It should just be an outstanding spot for folks to come in after work, catch up with some friends and have an ice cold pint of beer.”

The new location is expected to open in the next five to six months. Recon Brewery’s is currently located on North Main Street Extension and inside the Meeder development in Cranberry.

Brewery news South Africa: SA Breweries reinstates its investment programme
SA Breweries, part of AB InBev, has reinstated its investment programme that was cancelled last year, allocating R2 bln for its home operations, TimesLIVE reported on June 8 citing a company announcement.

The maker of Carling Black Label and Castle Lager beer had cancelled R2.5 bln for the 2020 financial year and in January cancelled a further R2.5 bln of investment earmarked for 2021 due to a challenging operating environment, regulatory uncertainty and a third local ban on alcohol sales in the country.

SA had banned alcohol sales as part of efforts to free up space in hospitals burdened with alcohol-related injuries for Covid-19 patients. In its latest move to curb the third wave of infections, alcohol sales were not banned but gatherings have been reduced.

The capital injection is earmarked for projects to be completed in the financial year 2022. Projects include upgrades to operating facilities, installation of new equipment at selected plants, product innovations and other necessary operating systems, SAB said in a statement.

“The move to implement reasonable measures, as we continue to navigate the pandemic, is a welcomed signal that we can expect to see more consultation in the future and that blanket bans will be a thing of the ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion commences sale of its West End Brewery major assets
Plant Closure Specialists Hilco Global APAC have commenced Sale Campaign for Major Assets at Lion’s West End Brewery in Adelaide, following its closure, Brewbound reported on June 4.

Lion has appointed global asset specialists Hilco Global APAC, in a joint venture with FA Maker to manage the sale of major assets from the West End Brewery. The appointment follows the announcement, in late 2020, of Lion’s plan to close the site at the end of June 2021.

Major assets that are in existing use are now available for immediate sale, with offers being accepted globally. Strong interest is expected from within the brewing community in addition to the broader food and beverage sector on this sale.

“With a fully functioning 500- hectolitre commercial brewery including keg, can, bottle filling and packing lines, we are confident in our team partnering with FA Maker on this project. We expect significant interest in the major assets at this site, and as a local team it’s an honour to be trusted to find the right buyers for the major assets that are in existing use and give these assets new homes” said Adrian Paley, Head of Commercial & Industrial at Hilco Global APAC.
