The Czech Republic: Consumption of pure alcohol per capita up in 2020
|
There were more frequent alcohol drinkers in the Czech Republic in 2020 than the year before and the estimated average yearly consumption rose significantly, reaching the highest figure in the past three years, a survey released by the National Institute of Public Health (SZU) showed on June 10.
The national survey of tobacco use and alcohol consumption in the Czech Republic in 2020 shows that one-fifth of the inhabitants drank every day or every other day and the number of Czech frequent drinkers rose by 2.4 percentage points last year.
On average, eight litres of pure alcohol per capita were consumed in the Czech Republic in 2020, 0.3 litres more than the year before. If teetotallers do not count, the score per person comes to 9.5 litres, 0.7 litres more as against 2019.
The SZU conducts the surveys on alcohol and tobacco consumption annually. In total, 1,769 respondents took part in the survey last year. The SZU says this is a very representative sample of Czechs over 15. The survey was conducted between mid-November and late December 2020.
Roughly one fifth of the polled, 19.8 percent, stated they drink every day or once in two days, which is 2.4 percent more than in 2019.

Thailand: Heineken committed to boosting demand despite expected market decrease
|
Heineken, the Dutch beer brand, remains committed to keeping its brand alive although the demand of the overall beer market is expected to decrease at a double-digit rate for the second consecutive year, the Bangkok Post reported on June 10.
Thailand's beer market is worth an estimated 180 billion baht a year, with Boon Rawd Brewery Co controlling more than 60% followed by Thai Beverage at 34%. Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Trading Co takes about 3% of the market share.
Teerapat Pongmaytee, marketing manager of Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Co, the marketer of Heineken beer, said overall beer consumption has become tepid since the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 when the market fell by a double-digit rate.
In its best bid to reach its drinkers when on-ground activities are prohibited and sales from on-premise channels have had to temporarily stop to stem the contagion, Heineken has still kept trying new marketing strategies.
"We've learned from the fast-moving consumer goods market that during the crisis, we still have to continue building brand awareness among our customers who are believed to get ready to drink again after the Covid-19 crisis," he said. "If we don't do that, we may have to invest heavier to draw them back

USA: Americans consuming more craft beer with higher alcohol content, study shows
|
Americans are consuming more craft beer with higher alcohol content but are drinking less beer by volume, according to a new analysis led by epidemiologists at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
The study, published online and in a coming issue of the journal Substance Use & Misuse, looked at beer purchased in stores between 2004 and 2014. This is the first study to examine trends not only in the volume of beer purchased, but also the “beer specific” alcohol content.
“With the rise in popularity of craft breweries and the acquisition of such breweries by large-scale industry and investment companies, we’ve seen steady growth in consumption of higher alcohol content beer,” said senior author Anthony Fabio, Ph.D., M.P.H., associate professor of epidemiology at Pitt Public Health. “It is important that public health messaging include an emphasis on knowing the alcohol content of beer, not just the number of beers consumed, to ensure healthy alcohol consumption.”
The research team obtained data from the 2004-2014 Nielsen Consumer Panel, which is an annual survey of about 35,000 to 60,000 American households with information on purchasing. Researchers then meticulously matched the types of beer purchased with their alcohol content, grouping beers with 4.5%

USA: Alcohol volume continues to shift from off-premise channels back to on-premise
|
Alcohol volume continues to shift from off-premise channels back to on-premise establishments, according the latest figures from Nielsen, BeverageDaily.com reported on June 10.
As a growing number of Americans become fully vaccinated, and bars and restaurants expand their capacity, more sales are being seen in the on-trade.
However, off-premise alcohol sales remain far above pre-pandemic levels. “This clearly is an indication that not all drinkers are returning to the on-premise, and alcohol consumption continues to be shifted more towards in-home consumption, compared to pre-pandemic time periods,” notes NielsenIQ in its beverage alcohol update.
For the four weeks ending May 29, 2021, total alcohol off-premise sales were down 10.9%, compared to the pandemic-hit same four weeks in 2020.
Compared to the same four weeks in 2019, however, off-premise sales of spirits are up 32%, wine is up 16%, and beer, FMB and cider is up 11%.
Premiumization was a prevalent trend in alcohol pre-pandemic. Momentum grew, however, during the pandemic: as consumers traded up to more expensive options for at-home consumption.
For the most part, Nielsen sees alcohol premiumization continue but slow as consumers take their dollars back to the on-premise and have less desire to treat themselves at home.
“It [premiumization] remains above pre-pandemic time periods:

Ireland: Diageo to relaunch non-alcoholic Guinness 0.0
|
A non-alcoholic stout withdrawn by Guinness over contamination fears late last year will finally be rolled out in pubs this July, The Irish News reported on June 10.
Drinks giant Diageo recalled all of its newly launched Guinness 0.0 drink in November 2020 after warning that it may be “unsafe so consume”.
Launched just weeks earlier after four years of development, consumers who had bought the new non-alcoholic drink were advised to dump it or return it to the point of purchase.
Diageo described it as "a precautionary measure" linked to "a microbiological contamination which may make some cans of Guinness 0.0 unsafe to consume".
The drinks giant has now announced that Guinness 0.0 will begin appearing in pubs around the north from mid-July.
It’s expected to appear again in supermarkets and off-licenses from the end of August.
Alan McAleenan, marketing director at Guinness Ireland, said: “Guinness has always maintained the upmost commitment to quality. We are 100 per cent confident that consumers’ expectations of our quality standards will be met with our new non-alcoholic Guinness 0.0.”
Pouring a pint of non-alcoholic stout isn’t straightforward. Diageo say non-alcoholic beers cannot be poured through traditional lines and keg systems.
To get around this, the drinks giant has developed a

Japan & Singapore: Sapporo Breweries bringing Yebisu beer to Singapore
|
Sapporo Breweries Ltd. will start selling Yebisu beer in Singapore on Tuesday, June 15, hoping to capitalize on strong demand for Japanese-brand products among local consumers, the Kyodo News Plus reported on June 9.
The Japanese brewer said it has selected the 350-mililiter Yebisu can from among the varied lineup of the long-established beer brand for sale through local distributors.
Pokka Pte. Ltd., a local subsidiary of the Sapporo group, and wholesaler Makoto-Ya (S) Pte. Ltd., which deals with Japanese food and beverages, will act as sales representatives, a Sapporo spokesperson in Tokyo told NNA.
Since its establishment in 1890 in Tokyo, Yebisu beer has had a strong following and is one of Sapporo's mainstay brands.
The company has put more weight on Sapporo Premium beer in its market strategy in Singapore, where Yebisu beer is mostly sold through online stores on a parallel import basis.
"We once sold Yebisu through a local agent but have not exported it in recent years because our focus has been on Sapporo Premium, which is also our key brand" the Sapporo official said.
The company did not disclose the price of Yebisu beer except to say it will likely be about 1.2-fold of that of Sapporo Premium. The sales
