Hops news USA: Hop acreage strung for harvest this year up 4% from 2020
Hop acreage strung for harvest in 2021 for Washington, Oregon, and Idaho is forecast at a record high 60,735 acres, 4 percent more than last year’s previous record of 58,641 acres, USDA reported on June 10.

Washington, with 43,380 acres for harvest, accounts for 71 percent of the total United States acreage. Idaho area strung for harvest was 9,784 acres, or 16 percent of the United States total. Oregon hop growers accounted for the remaining 13 percent, or 7,571 acres. Acreage increased from last year in all three states.

The top five hop varieties strung for harvest in the United States this year are Citra, Mosaic, Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus (CTZ), Cascade, and Simcoe. These five varieties account for 53 percent of the total U.S. acreage.

Whisky news UK & USA: 25% tax on Scotch whisky exports to the US to be lifted
A crippling 25% tax on Scotch whisky exports to the US will be lifted after an agreement in the long-running row over subsidies to aircraft manufacturing giants Boeing and Airbus, the Daily Business reported on June 16.

The US and the EU have agreed a truce in a 17-year trade dispute as President Joe Biden said they should turn their attention to battling competition from China.

Since a 25% tariff on single malt whisky exports to the US were imposed in October 2019 sales have fallen by more than a third – amounting to more than £500 mln.

US trade representative Katherine Tai said the agreement resolved a longstanding “trade irritant in the US-Europe relationship”, and paved the way for a five-year suspension of tariffs that were imposed on $7.5 billion worth of EU goods by Donald Trump in October 2018.

His tariffs also hit still wine made in France, Germany, Spain and the UK single malt whiskey from Northern Ireland; and liqueurs made in Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain. Shortly before leaving office in January the outgoing president added brandy to the list, hitting Cognac’s largest export market.

In December, the UK said it would voluntarily suspend its tariffs on US goods imposed as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Fighting Hand Brewing Company now open for business in Pineville
A new brewery Fighting Hand Brewing Company on Military Highway in Pineville is now open for business, KALB News reported on June 16.

“It’s been very nice to be able to turn the open sign on,” said Owner Chris Lindsey.

The space, which used to be home to an old church, boasts dozens of tables, ten different beers, board games and a pop-up library. It can best be described in two words.

“Nerd chic is what we’re going for here,” said Chris.

Local artwork covers the green walls.

“We’re trying to use local artists where we can and then insert a bunch of nerd stuff in that. If we like it, it goes on the wall,” said Owner Tiffany Simms Lindsey.

The furniture makes the whole place feel like home.

“We tried to use furniture that we were given and furniture that we found or had at the house to try to make it cozy,” said Tiffany.

There’s a relaxing atmosphere perfect for throwing back a few drinks.

Ten different beers are on tap, ranging from ambers to stouts and seasonal beers like satsuma wheat. There is also a list of flavors you can add to any beer of your choice.

Tiffany, the lead brewer, started brewing post college.

Brewery news USA, ND: Black Paws Brewing Co. hoping to open its doors in Devils Lake in August
The first brewery in Devils Lake will be opening soon and it comes under the guidance and ownership of possibly the most unlikely of people, the Grand Forks Herald reported on June 13.

Jeb Oehlke practiced law in Devils Lake for four years. He’s opening Black Paws Brewing Co. in August to follow a passion he has had for most of his life.

“Practicing law was no fun,” Oehlke said. “It was not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

He entered the service industry after he quit practicing law and became a server and bartender at The Ranch Steakhouse in Devils Lake in the meantime. As he worked, the idea he had years earlier percolated in his brain, and he began to hatch a plan.

He remembered that he had considered opening a brewery long before he even thought about going into law. He began homebrewing in 2010 and fell in love with it from there.

“I just started developing recipes of my own four or five years ago,” Oehlke said. “I just saw a need for it in Devils Lake. It’s kind of a tough place to get a craft beer.”

He officially decided this was going to be the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Southern Strain Brewing to open its second location later this year
If you’ve ever ventured into Southern Strain Brewing in Concord and sipped a Sea Level Pale Ale, then you know Charlotte is in for a treat when the brewery opens its second location later this year on Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood, the Charlotte Observer reported on June 12.

The small batch brewery and taproom first opened its doors in 2018 in historic downtown Concord, and one of its co-owners said the expansion was not expected this soon.

“COVID really expedited the process for us,” Jake Allen said. “We thought we would expand at some point, but sales had been down in our taproom since last June. The building owner of our current location came to us, and he has this location in Plaza Midwood next to the Harris Teeter parking lot and asked if we were interested. It was too good to pass up.”

The 2,500 square-foot taproom will occupy one third of the first floor of the building and will have a similar look and feel to the Concord location. In addition to the same blue glass backsplash and concrete block bar, the taproom will also feature artwork from local artists at the Southern Tiger Collective.

Brewery news Canada, SK: Not Bad Brewing opens in Saskatoon Makerspace
A new brewery with the simple goal to “make beer that doesn’t suck and is pleasantly tasty” has launched in the Saskatoon Makerspace, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 14.

Not Bad Brewing has been founded by “two long-time homies, nick & brady, who have been kicking it since flip phones were a thing.”

The brewery’s first release is Meh Double Dry-Hopped IPA (5% abv), which is described as follows:

hazy and smooth with big citrus body and a very mild pine bitterness. brewed with 2 row, torrified wheat, flaked oats and a touch of chinook. double dry hopped with citra and cascade. fermented with voss kveik.

Meh went on sale last week via the brewery’s webstore for pick-up orders and quickly sold out. Future releases will be announced via Facebook and Instagram as they’re packaged and ready to order.

Not Bad Brewing is located at 130-209 Avenue D South in Saskatoon.

Brewery news USA, OR: Concentric Brewing Co. launched by three partners in Portland
Three men with a passion for home-brewed beer opened a new pint-lovers’ destination earlier this year just east of the iconic Arrigoni Bridge in Portland, the Middletown Press reported on June 15.

Concentric Brewing Co. is so-named for the three co-owners’ sense of having a “common center,” according to financial planner Dave Peichert, who runs the business with Middletown firefighter Drew France and physical therapist Brian Aida. They opened in February — during the global pandemic.

All three live in Portland.

Peichert said he and his business partners’ common center is a love for brewing beer. “It was a group of home-brewers that got chatting about putting a business plan together and did it,” he said. “It’s years in the making, and we’ve had partners come and go.”

The group started out showcasing their beer at brew fests around the state. After years of planning, the endeavor led to the Feb. 3 opening at 91 Main St. in Portland.

Opening up during a pandemic, Peichert said, was “pandemonium.” Business would be slow when they expected it to be busy and vice-versa. He chalks that up to people’s changing patterns during COVID-19.

“Our first experience without masks and all those restrictions was Memorial Day weekend — when ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Prost Brewing building a third location with a pilot microbrewery
Like a lot of breweries that package significant amounts of beer, Prost Brewing is exiting the pandemic in some ways better off than it went into it. Not only did the company produce more beer in 2020 than in the previous year, but it also added a line of seltzers and brought on a significant restaurant expert in Boyd Hoback, who founded and led the Denver-based Good Times Restaurant chain for thirty years before stepping down in 2019, Westword reported on June 14.

Now Hoback and Prost's owners, the father-son duo of Ken and David DeLine, are adding a menu designed by well-known chef Max MacKissock (Bar Dough, Morin, among others) and Juan Padró, founder of Culinary Creative (which started off with Highland Tap & Burger, and now has a growing empire, including those where MacKissock oversees the kitchen and menu) and building a third location with 7,000 square feet of space and a 4,000-square-foot patio, at 53 Centennial Boulevard in Highlands Ranch.

When it opens — possibly as soon as mid-September — the new biergarten will also include a stage, an outdoor bar, fire pits and a one-barrel pilot brewing system that Prost will use to experiment with a wider array ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Banter Brewing Co. expected to open in Springfield this summer
After Mother's Brewing opened in 2011, Springfield's mania for craft breweries exploded.

Most of the resulting locally-owned breweries with tasting rooms concentrated in downtown, Commercial Street, Rountree and Galloway.

But this summer, a new brewery is expected to open up at 330 West Plainview Road, in a growing part of town roughly a mile south of the Library Center, but just east of South Campbell Avenue, the Springfield News-Leader reported on June 12.

Architect Brian Harbison and IT professional Jon Weddle said their venture, Banter Brewing Co., will seat roughly 42 people at a storefront near established neighborhood hangouts like the Zeus Room Barbershop and Marco's Pizza.

They said they think they can be open sometime in mid-August, as they work through the permitting process.

Banter will run out of a small location, less than 2,000 square feet, but the founders believe it will become a neighborhood focal point.

Weddle said, "We thought, hey, it'd be really cool if we could put a spot on the south side of town here that would be convenient and would really create an atmosphere where people can come in and just relax."

Harbison said, "In all the local craft (beer scene), brewers are always helping (other) local craft brewers out, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: OutSpoken Brewing expanding into new production facility
OutSpoken Brewing is expanding into a new production facility at 87 Huron Street in Sault Ste. Marie’s Canal District, the Northern Ontario Business reported on June 14.

“We need to be able to brew more," reads a news release from the microbrewery.

"Our home hub at 350 Queen Street East has served us well for several years. However, we are limited by the amount we can brew on site and there is no room to expand our current production space."

Named for the nearby Sault Ste. Marie Canal, a Parks Canada National Historic Site, the district has undergone a renaissance in recent years.

Other area tenants include the Algoma Conservatory of Music, the Machine Shop event venue, and the Millworks Centre for Entrepreneurship, all located on the site of the former St. Marys Paper mill.

Equipment at OutSpoken's new site is being commissioned, and the facility, which will be used primarily for production, is scheduled to open later this month.

The existing Queen Street location will open its patio to customers starting on June 11, as the province gradually emerges from the COVID-19 stay-at-home order. The patio will be operated while observing COVID restriction rules.

“This is a perfect opportunity not only for us to brew more ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Analysts maintain Buy rating on HiteJinro, expect earnings to rebound from H2 2021
NH Investment & Securities analysts maintain a Buy rating and a TP of W50,000 on HiteJinro. In line with an easing in pandemic-induced restrictions on operating hours for restaurants and pubs, pent-up demand for alcohol consumption is to be released. And, with vaccination rates on the rise, the liquor industry should normalize from 2H21, the Business Korea reported on June 15.

The analysts anticipate that B2B sales growth will add to already accelerated B2C sales growth, in turn reigniting stagnated market share growth momentum. Although there are some investor concerns that competition in the liquor industry will intensify due to a better operating environment, NH Investment & Securities expect improvement in HiteJinro’s quarterly top-line recovery to translate gradually into more robust margins. The pace of improvement in the firm’s share price has been slow, as B2B sales have been showing the slowest recovery among distribution channels due to government regulations on restaurant operating hours. Upon more visible earnings improvement in 2H21, HiteJinro’s share price should be primed for a sharp climb.

The experts believe that HiteJinro’s efforts to increase its sales in overseas markets will soon begin in earnest to be reflected in its earnings. Although its current overseas sales ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Alcohol sales restricted again as South Africa moves to level 3 lockdown restrictions
South Africa’s government has reinstated alert level 3 lockdown restrictions, which means alcohol sales will be restricted, news24.com reported on June 15.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on June 15 that alcohol sales for offsite consumption will be restricted from 10:00 to 18:00, from Monday to Thursday, excluding public holidays.

Alcohol sales for onsite consumption will be permitted as per licence conditions up to 21:00, and consumption in public spaces are prohibited.

The curfew has also been adjusted from 22:00 to 04:00. This means non-essential establishments such as restaurants, bars and fitness centres will have to close at 21:00 to allow patrons and customers to travel home before the curfew, Ramaphosa said.

Gatherings are also limited to 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors.

South Africa is currently facing a steep third wave, with Gauteng worst affected. Ramaphosa said that over the last seven days, an average of 7 500 daily infections were recorded.

Hospital admissions over the past 14 days were almost 60% higher than in the previous two weeks. The number of new cases will soon surpass the peak of the second wave, Ramaphosa added.

South Africa has seen three alcohol sales bans since the country went into its first lockdown in March ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion’s iconic Adelaide brewery set to stop production this week
The final kegs are set to come off the production line at Adelaide's historic West End Brewery, ending more than 160 years of making beer on the site, the Yahoo News Australia reported on June 16.

The last kegs will be filled on Thursday, June 17 after brewing company Lion announced plans to close the facility in 2020.

"Unfortunately, due to excess brewery capacity across Australia, the tough decision was made to close the site late last year," Lion Supply Chain Director Ian Roberts said.

"During this transition, Lion has done its best to care for and offer a raft of support to the West End team as each of them faced this period of change.

The West End leadership team and their staff have been exceptional in recent months, Mr Roberts said.

"While understandably disappointed by this decision, they have continued to focus on brewing to the highest standard and keeping the beer flowing for their loyal SA customers and consumers."

Lion will move production of West End beer to other breweries in its network and has pledged to maintain the same recipe.

It said the original West End Brewery tower building had also been heritage-listed and the company was working with Heritage SA to ensure ...More info on site

Barley news Australia & Vietnam: Vietnam emerging as valuable market for Australian feed barley
Vietnam is emerging as a valuable market for Australian feed barley, buying over double the amount of Australian product this marketing year compared to the previous year, the North Queensland Register reported on June 14.

So far, according to US Department of Agriculture data Australia is on track to export 500,000 tonnes of barley to Vietnam for the 2020-21 marketing year, up from 200,000 the previous year.

And demand has been going gangbusters since last harvest's crop was available in December last year, with Australian Bureau of Statistics data showing over 50,000 tonnes of barley has left Aussie shores for Vietnam each month since December up until the most recent figures from April.

Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre barley markets manager Mary Raynes said while the increased trade with Vietnam was not enough to make up for the loss of the Chinese market it was a positive development.

Ms Raynes said Vietnam was likely to continue to emerge to be a significant buyer of feed grain, with a large pork industry and a growing dairy market.

"Vietnam is the world's fifth largest producer of pork and their pig herd is up to 85 per cent of what is was before African Swine Fever hit, with ...More info on site
