USA: Alcohol consumption sees largest volume gain in nearly 20 years
|
In 2020, alcohol consumption in the US saw the largest volume gain in nearly 20 years, Drinks International reported on June 16.
According to new findings from IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, total alcohol beverages consumption increased by 2% in 2020, the largest volume gain since 2002.
The increases were driven by consumer demand for flavoured and better-for-you options, convenience, and the increase in at-home drinking occasions.
“A key driver of US beverage alcohol consumption is flavour,” said Brand Rand, IWSR’s chief operating officer of the Americas.
“Flavoured subcategories – from beer to vodka to US whiskey – are significantly outperforming traditional non-flavoured sub-categories. Flavour is also the top consumer driver of the fast-growing ready-to-drink category, and that’s likely creating a halo effect on total alcohol as well.”
The year-to-date 2021 performance is still higher than 2019 and expected to end at 3.8% growth in volume and a 5.5% increase in value.
As normal service resumes over the next five years, this growth rate is forecasted to slow with 0.5% volume growth and 2.8% value CAGR, 2020-2025.
The spirits category posted a 4.6% volume growth, the largest increase since 1990.
Within the category, agave spirits grew by 15.9% volume, overtaking rum to be the third-largest spirits category in the

Australia: Zero alcohol beer segment growing faster than any other category
|
The chief executive of Australia’s biggest beer business says the zero alcohol beer segment is growing faster than any other category and easily outstripping the 8 to 9 per cent growth of craft beers, as the company tries to offset a flat mainstream beer market, The Australian Financial Review reported on June 16.
Robert Iervasi, the group chief executive of Asahi Beverages, which has owned the Carlton & United Breweries beer business for a year after a A$16 billion buyout, also says it is unlikely the overall beer market in Australia will make a full recovery until next year after the hit to hospitality venues in the pandemic.
He said the zero alcohol beer category is forecast to grow at above 30 per cent annually from a low base, driven by the increasing focus on health and wellbeing by many people.
The company’s brands in this segment, led by Carlton Zero and Great Northern Zero, are important growth drivers for the overall Asahi business in Australia which is projected to generate annual revenues of close to A$4.2 billion in 2021. It also includes soft drink brands such as Schweppes and Pepsi Max.
Mr Iervasi terms the zero alcohol segment as “beyond beer”.
“Certainly beyond beer

South Korea: Increased home consumption of alcohol doesn’t stop downward slope for imported beers
|
South Korea consumers are drinking more alcohol alone at home amid COVID-19, a trend which has driven fruit wine imports up but not managed to stop a downward slope for imported beers, FoodNavigator-Asia.com reported on June 15.
The new trend is dubbed ‘homsul’, which refers to drinking alcohol at home, usually alone, which has unsurprisingly gained a lot of traction during COVID-19 due to lockdowns and social distancing rules, as well as an increasing number of younger South Koreans living independently.
According to recent data from the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), this trend has resulted in a shift in consumption occasions for alcohol, particularly for fruit wines and is something that the ministry is monitoring closely.
“As homsul is becoming a trend in the community, it can be seen that the consumption of [liquors such as] fruit wines is changing from a drink to be enjoyed on special days, to a drink to be enjoyed at home alone or sometimes with family,” said MFDA via a formal statement.
“Over 69,000 tons of fruit wine were imported in 2020, a 30.4% increase compared to the previous year (over 53,000 tons), and unlike the trend in previous years where fruit wine

Russia: AB InBev Efes expects double-digit growth in its non-alcoholic local beer sales
|
AB InBev Efes, a Russia-based unit of the world’s largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev, expects double-digit growth in its non-alcoholic local beer sales in the next few years, after COVID-19 accelerated a shift towards healthier lifestyles, Reuters reported on June 16.
While many beer lovers across the globe shifted to at-home consumption during the pandemic, non-alcoholic beer sales in Russia – the world’s sixth-largest beer market – grew 13% year-on-year, while the overall beer market rose 4%, according to AB InBev Efes.
The company’s own sales of non-alcoholic beer in Russia jumped by 20% last year, Dmitry Shpakov, chief executive officer of AB InBev Efes, told Reuters.
“Healthy lifestyles, which became popular long before the pandemic, gained more momentum last year and contributed to increasing consumer interest in non-alcoholic beer, delivering double-digit growth,” Shpakov said.
AB InBev Efes, which operates in Russia and Ukraine and offers BUD, Stella Artois and Spaten among other brands, expects this trend to continue over the next few years, Shpakov said.
“The (non-alcoholic beer) industry has more than doubled over the last four to five years. And the further ahead we look, the more non-alcoholic beer becomes not a substitute for alcoholic beer, but a category in its own right.”
Despite the

Japan: Brewers double down on canned beers
|
Japan’s social media has been abuzz recently over Asahi Breweries’ new canned offering that features a removable top, allowing them to be chugged down like an ice-cold mug of draft beer, known as nama in Japanese, the Japan Times reported on June 17.
Beer makers suffering from a plunge in consumption at restaurants and bars during the pandemic are zeroing in on canned beer, backed by tax cuts for regular beer and a surge in household alcohol consumption. The situation is giving an edge to such products as Asahi’s new Super Dry.
The beer sold out within days of being released in convenience stores and then in supermarkets. Fans will have to wait until mid-June for more, said Asahi.
“We want to enhance the home drinking experience by offering customers a product that reminds them of the joy of drinking a freshly poured nama beer with a creamy head,” said Kristin Chiu, spokesperson for Asahi Group Holdings. While the release of the product couldn’t have been better timed, it was actually four years in the making, she said.
The can’s design features an interior coating with fine protrusions that generate delicate bubbles and a smoother head, as well as a top that can be

Canada: Rains halt Canada’s barley market bull trend
|
The bull trend of Canada's barley market in 2020/21 has halted, when beneficial and partly torrential rains saved the crops, at least temporarily, in the dry Prairies, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in June.
Prices of the central feed barley market Lethbridge came down from C$350 to C$310 per tonne for old crop. New crop is offered at C$275.
Domestic and export (China) demand had incited farmers to plant 3.2 mln ha of barley vs. 2.8 mln last year. Private forecasters expect a crop of 12.5 mln tonnes (last year 10.7 mln). Exports should reach 4.2 mln vs. 3.6 mln tonnes in the present campaign. Domestic feed demand is seen at 6.9 vs. 6.3 mln tonnes.
U.S. Yellow Corn used to compete with Canadian barley in the stock feed centres of Alberta, but is not now and will hardly be competitive in the new crop year.
